From the Williams sisters’ razor sharp neon nails to Maria Sharipova’s designer on-court ensembles and Rafael Nadal’s mop top, there’s no denying that professional tennis has turned into a bit of a vanity sport. Almost two decades ago, French hairstylist Julien Farel opened his first pop-up salon at the French Open, catering to players who wanted to look their best before big matches. After befriending players like Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Farel took his successful concept to Wimbledon and, eventually, the U.S. Open, though it took him four years to actually convince them to let him open up shop outside the locker rooms. Now, 16 years later, players can visit the 400-square-foot Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa inside Arthur Ashe Stadium to get coiffed before they serve. Men and women head the famed stylist for fresh cuts and tight braids, some even requesting a streak or two of bright color to set them apart. “The U.S. Open holds a special place in my heart, and my team and I are thrilled to be celebrating our 16th year at this iconic event,” says Farel. “It’s especially sweet this year, as we are witnessing a new generation of tennis stars take center stage. We’ve been fortunate to connect with so many world class athletes throughout the years, styling them and sharing in their passion for the sport. We can’t wait to see what these rising stars achieve at this year’s tournament. The U.S. Open is always a highlight for us, and we’re proud to continue our partnership and to support the incredible sport of tennis.”

Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa

Farel has done hair, makeup and grooming for many tennis greats including Nadal, Djokovic, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilov and styled Coco Gauff. The Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa opens on August 24 and runs through September 8. “It’s a great perk for the players—a nice time for them to relax and focus before a match,” says Farel. “If you look good, you feel good and you play better. It’s important for me to educate these players about their hair and give them products like our anti-aging line so that when they’re in the heat and humidity all day playing, they can come off the court and moisturize and refine their strands.”

The weightless formula absorbs quickly into skin with zero residue, leaving it plumped, hydrated and prepped for makeup. Routines have ballooned in steps and complexity, and none of us are ever quite sure if we’re doing it right,” says Merit CMO Aila Morin. “Our first skincare product, Great Skin Serum, is beloved because of its simplicity and the immediacy of its results—so much so that we kept getting feedback from customers that they’d like us to tackle other elements of their daily skincare routine. That’s why we’re so excited to introduce Great Skin Priming Moisturizer, a lightweight cream that provides time-release hydration for healthy, moisturized skin. Featuring over 100 active ingredients from around the world, all working in synchrony to accelerate cellular repair, German skincare brand Auteur is delivering next level results with its product line. Its encapsulated peptide delivery systems offer enhanced bioavailability and repair capabilities and lower weight molecular densities for better ingredient absorption. With hydration and skin barrier protection built into each formula, no chemical stabilizers or preservatives, each product alone features up to 40 active ingredients.
The products, which pair the best of biotech with certified organic natural ingredients, are showcased in chic, tortoise-shell patterned, refillable glass vessels with plastic-free exterior packaging. Beloved by aestheticians and skincare experts like Melanie Grant and Raquel Medina-Cleghorn, the full-spectrum line includes everything from serums and creams to toners, masks and sun protection. “Auteur’s foundation is their impressive base of next-generation peptide technology,” explains Medina-Cleghorn, of Raquel New York. “The products address a range of factors that contribute to skin aging and work comprehensively to correct them.” The best part is that their ingredients have third-party clinic trials attesting to their efficacy. “Their formulation uses a layering technique, where multiple ingredients addressing the same concerns are used, all of which target that concern in different ways. The formulas are also reviewed constantly, to ensure the most up-to-date and best ingredients are being utilized in the appropriate concentrations.” Both Medina-Cleghorn and Simon use the full product range in their bespoke facial treatments. “I use the powdered Definitive Enzyme Cleanser to gently exfoliate delicate skin, or I infuse the Definitive Line Serum with ultrasound, helping it penetrate even deeper,” says Medina-Cleghorn. “I always apply the Definitive Eye Cream, as I’m completely obsessed and it’s the best eye cream I’ve ever used. I get everyone hooked on it. The Definitive Lifting Toner is a must before LED, as it contains a peptide that converts light into cellular energy, essentially creating photosynthesis for the face. Their moisturizers and Definitive Neck & Décolleté Cream are also beautiful finishing products. I used the Composition No. 1 before my wedding and had the best skin of my life.”

Summer Skin School With Dr. Dendy Engelman https://dujour.com/beauty/summer-skin-school-with-dr-dendy-engelman/ Tue, 14 May 2024 21:16:40 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=134074 We talked with the top board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon to learn about the face and body treatments you need to invest in this summer

The post Summer Skin School With Dr. Dendy Engelman appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
It comes as no surprise that over the summer, patients clamor to see their beloved dermatologist for a seasonal tune-up. “Summer typically means more time spent socializing, traveling and showing off skin, so we see an influx of patients coming in looking for lifting, firming and sculpting treatments,” says top board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Dr. Dendy Engelman.

The New York City dermatologist, who works out of the Shafer Clinic at 535 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, talks to DuJour about the latest technologies she’s employing on her clients.

Injectables

Shafer Clinic was one of the first practices to offer patients Skinvive by Juvéderm, the first product of its kind. Allergan Aesthetics’ Skinvive is a hyaluronic acid (HA) intradermal microdroplet injection, or injectable skin hydrator. Juvéderm Volux XC, the thickest filler on the market, is used for jawline augmentation and is a huge game changer for men and women who want a more supported jawline as it mimics bone. “Fillers are a popular and effective method of non-invasively sculpting and restoring volume to areas of the face,” says Dr. Engelman. “There is no downtime and the results can last up to six months, so this is a great treatment to do at the start of summer, for results that can be enjoyed all season long. Skinvive by Juvéderm is an innovative injectable that helps improve the skin’s smoothness and moisture retention with beautiful results. Volux is an excellent solution for many patients who wish to define their jawline.”

Emface

If you’re looking for a natural-looking lift, Emface is a surgery-free, zero-downtime treatment option that targets aging and muscle loss in the face. Muscle mass decreases by approximately 3–8 percent per decade after age 30, which can affect the definition and contours of the face. Emface focuses on strengthening, toning and rebuilding the muscles beneath the skin. It also helps improve the skin’s overall structure and definition for a plumper, more youthful-looking appearance. On average, patients saw a 92 percent improvement in facial volume. The latest Emface applicator, designed for the area below the chin, helps further target and tone the more stubborn areas of the face for a more defined and contoured appearance. “I recommend patients do four 30-minute sessions over a four-week period,” says Dr. Engelman. “Patients love this treatment because they can see a visible difference in the way the forehead, cheeks and corners of the mouth are lifted and firmer after each session. Emface also has long-lasting results because the electromagnetic and radiofrequency stimulation boosts the body’s own collagen and elastin production.”

Exion

Exion is a game-changing head-to-toe skin treatment featuring four unique applicators, including microneedling radiofrequency (RF), a face and body applicator for addressing skin laxity and the popular Emfemme 360 applicator for intimate health. The innovative microneedling RF applicator penetrates deep into the skin to maximize collagen and elastin production, while having minimal downtime. The device also has a hyaluronic acid face applicator that stimulates the skin’s natural HA production and restores volume, hydration and skin elasticity. This is a great option for those who are looking to replenish their HA levels and improve the plumpness of the skin. “Exion is a favored treatment because it’s non-invasive and utilizes multiple modalities to improve skin’s hydration and firmness all over the body,” says Dr. Engelman. “We are able to easily customize a patient’s Exion treatment based on their individual goals.”

A Day In The Life: Josie Maran https://dujour.com/news/a-day-in-the-life-josie-maran/ Wed, 03 Apr 2024 17:37:51 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=133684 Model turned skincare entrepreneur Josie Maran relaunches her beauty brand with new sustainable packaging and fragrances and shares her daily routine with us

The post A Day In The Life: Josie Maran appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Clean beauty mogul and model Josie Maran has logged countless hours in the chairs of the beauty world’s top pros but could never find safe formulations that worked. In 2007, after three years of trial and error, she launched the Josie Maran brand becoming the first green beauty brand ever to be stocked at Sephora—from day one, free of petrochemicals and parabens, and housed in eco-conscious packaging and yet also rich and lusciously formulated. Her Original Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil—organic, sustainably-sourced and cold-pressed, long before the industry caught onto those terms—was luxury beauty’s first single-ingredient face oil, bringing the ancient secret of Moroccan Argan Oil to department store counters for the first time. It sold out instantly, and made Josie a beauty pioneer, right out of the gate. The brand’s signature Argan Oil is, to this day, present in every formula—including the blockbuster Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter. From day one she believed true beauty is chic and clean and effective. In 2024, this founding principle is stronger than ever. It’s why she went back to the drawing board to redesign new, lower-waste, refillable packaging for her brand. “I started thinking about what I would do if I launched the brand from scratch today,” Maran explains. “How would it be different? What are my values now and are they reflected in my brand? It allowed me to be creative again and look at the company with new eyes. We examined every part of the process from supply chains and ingredient sourcing to the facilities where the products are manufactured and of course the packaging itself.”

The remix consists of a reimagining of her three most beloved products: 100% Pure Argan Oil, Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter and Argan Oil + Sugar Balm Body Scrub, each in new, even more sustainable packaging with refills. “I want to help make refilling our favorite products easier and truly more sustainable than the typical refill systems out there,” says Maran. Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter and Argan Oil + Sugar Balm Body Scrub now come in new clean fragrances (which only use 100 percent plant-based fruit and plant essences). “I was so lucky to work with master perfumer Jerome Epinette to help us develop a more nuanced and elevated take on plant based fragrances,” says Maran. The three new fragrances, Vanilla Vibezzz, Bohemian Fig and Topless Tangerine, are all inspired by Maran’s Northern California roots. “Fragrance is a fascination of mine. But because I’m super-sensitive to synthetic scents, it took me a long time to realize that fragrance could be fun,” Maran explains. “When I want to switch up my energy or my mood, fragrance is one of the fastest ways to get me where I want to go—like an instant portal to a new me.

Here’s how Josie Maran spends a typical day at her home in St. Barths.

5:30 a.m. I wake up very early, have an espresso and water with lemon, meditate for 20 minutes, write in my Artist’s Way “morning pages” and get ready for the day.

6:30 a.m. I realign on what my priorities are for the day at work and get updates on important projects before the meetings start. My main priority is deciding what’s for lunch! I make my lunch plan early so I don’t end up not eating because usually my meetings are back to back all day.

7:30 a.m. Workout! I love Pilates and kundalini yoga or a walk in nature to get me going for the day.

9:00am. My skincare routine begins. I use Argan Milk, our Argan Face Butter and then always finish with Argan Oil. I not only use a few drops of Argan Oil on my face but also on my hair to help with split ends, as my eye cream, then on any dry spots or blemishes to help them heal. I use it everywhere everyday and it just makes my skin glow!! My last step is Sun Milk SPF 33 and buttering up with our Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter.

10:00 a.m-3:00p.m. My team works remotely so we’re all on nonstop Zoom calls.

4:00p.m. The great flip side to having a team that’s primarily based in New York is that by the afternoon things have calmed down so I get to spend time with my kids after they’re home from school and hear about their days.

6:00p.m. For dinner, my cute hubby who is the best cook ever cooks us dinner with all of our help and we cheers to another beautiful day.

9:00p.m. My evening skincare routine is the same except at night I do a full Body Sugar scrub in the shower. I love doing this right before bed because it leaves a cushion of argan moisture on your freshly-buffed and smooth skin and sleeping in freshly moisturized skin is heavenly! In the winter, I use my Argan Sugar Scrub in the morning on my face because the moisture left on my skin is perfect and I never dry out in the winter anymore….trust me on this one!

Colorists Reyad Fritas and his wife and business partner, Jax Williard Fritas, with popular hair salons in New York City and Aspen, have launched Suite Reyad’s first haircare collection. The duo have created five products: The Shampoo and The Conditioner, each available for fine and normal hair and thick and coarse hair, and The Cure, a pack of six weekly booster serums for dry or damaged hair. “After two years of testing, especially on clients with a lot of hair damage, we finally have something that allows us to say: ‘This will help,’” says Fritas, whose clientele includes Imaan Hammam and Nina Garcia. Made in New York and sourced in France, the all-natural, vegan line, which is free of sulfates, phosphates and parabens, is color- and heat-safe and full of healthy growth-stimulating ingredients such as organic date seed oil. “It was important for us to make a professional-quality product with a great scent,” says Fritas, who worked with a French perfumer who’s worked with Byredo and Le Labo. “We didn’t make any sacrifices,” says Williard Fritas.

When it comes to clean beauty cult favorites, Beautycounter’s inky-black mascara and brightening vitamin C serum rank high on the list. Now, devotees can finally dip into fragrance from the non-toxic cosmetics leader. After 11 years, the brand is launching Clean Eau de Parfum, a formula that’s free of potentially harmful ingredients including phthalates (chemical compounds that help bind scent molecules to skin but are known endocrine disruptors). “We’ve gone to great lengths to protect health and safety,” Beautycounter founder Gregg Renfrew says of the new juice.

Clean Eau de Parfum, $96, BEAUTYCOUNTER, beautycounter.com

Clean Eau de Parfum, $96, BEAUTYCOUNTER, beautycounter.com

Renfrew’s current favorite of the group of five scents is Hyper Rose, a heady bouquet of earthy blooms including tuberose, gardenia and Turkish rose. Crafted with fragrance house Robertet using natural ingredients and safe synthetic essences, the range also includes Miles Away, a woodsy, bergamot-laced blend softened by sandalwood; zingy Sun Spills, with bright notes of grapefruit, neroli and jasmine; Second Skin, containing sensual wafts of vanilla and sandalwood and aquatic Pacific Dreams, laced with fresh lemon and bergamot. “Scent should be an extension of your personal brand,” Renfrew says.

In lieu of phthalates, a synthetic sandalwood oil gives the formula staying power but, since clean fragrances tend to be a bit lighter, she suggests anointing spots that are naturally warm to amplify notes. “It’s a little bit behind the ears, on wrists, a little under the arms.” But never go overboard. “I always like to remind people that a little goes a long way—you want to apply just enough so that people know they’re in your world, but not so much that they’re still smelling you 30 minutes later.”

The fragrances may smell amazing, but the brand’s mission is more than just a pretty moment. Renfrew also believes the radical transparency of ingredients in this new line (as opposed to traditional fragrances on the market) offer a great teaching moment to help consumers become more aware of what they’re putting on their bodies. After helping to pass laws including MoCRA (which gives the FDA greater authority to regulate cosmetics,) “we wanted to create an opportunity to really educate the masses on safer ingredients and increased disclosure.”

A Day In The Life: Tina Craig https://dujour.com/beauty/a-day-in-the-life-tina-craig-u-beauty/ Tue, 12 Dec 2023 02:05:53 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=131004 Influencer turned skincare entrepreneur Tina Craig looks back on the massive success of her brand, U Beauty, in just a few short years and shares her daily routine with us

The post A Day In The Life: Tina Craig appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
In 2020, influencer Tina Chen Craig started U Beauty because of what she calls “cosmetic confusion.” Craig had tried probably every skincare brand on the market and nothing worked. “I was using 15 products a day, twice a day,” she explains. “I was tired of countless steps and dozens of products each day just to barely maintain the health of my skin. Not only was I beholden to an elaborate routine, I developed rosacea and sensitivity.” She met and decided to partner with Katie Borghese, who had been developing skincare lines for brands for 20 years, to create a simple, high-performance, efficacious and innovative product line in a clinical-grade lab in Italy known for innovative technology. And U Beauty was born. “We offer sustainable protocols that actually work and can realistically be followed with products produced in the E.U. that follow strict regulatory and ingredient exclusions,” says Craig. “Certified with Positive Luxury’s Butterfly Mark, we’re committed to producing exceptional formulas using ethically harvested, fully traceable ingredients tested for safety, purity and efficacy.” The science-backed skincare is safe and effective and utilizes proprietary Siren Capsule Technology to deliver powerful active ingredients to areas of the skin that need them with precision-accuracy—and without risk of irritation.

U Beauty The Trio Set

“Every single formula we launch fills a hole for something that doesn’t exist yet, delivers multiple benefits and improves both your routine and your skin,” Craig explains. “I’m a perfectionist by nature, and I would never release a product that’s not perfect.” The brand’s latest launch is a dewy and lightweight tinted moisturizer, The Super Tinted Hydrator, which blurs any imperfections.

U Beauty The Super Tinted Hydrator

Here’s how Tina Craig spends a typical day in Dallas.

7:00 a.m. I meditate every morning even if it’s only for 10-15 minutes. Cuddle with my cat (because my teen refuses to, and he’s also away at college now!)

8:00 a.m. Splash cold water on my face (never use hot water: cold, room-temperature or lukewarm only!) and wash with The Mantle Skin Conditioning Wash. It’s the only facial cleanser I have ever used in the mornings! It softens and conditions my skin for products without stripping and drying. Then I take a quick shower. I only shampoo my hair 1-2 times a week but I like to do a conditioning rinse every other day.

9:00 a.m. After the shower, I start my skincare routine with The Return Eye Concentrate (I don’t go a morning or evening without it), The Super Hydrator to seal it all in, followed by The Multimodal Defender Broad Spectrum SPF30 for all-day defense. Finally, I add The Super Tinted Hydrator if I want to even my skin tone and get a preternatural all-day glow.

10:00 a.m. I have a cup of Pique Fermente Pu’er Tea and Shore Magic Marine Collagen. I check in with Sophie, my executive assistant, on the day’s appointments and deadlines and from there, it’s non-stop. Now that my son has graduated from high school, I don’t have school pick-ups anymore. I kind of miss it.

12:00 p.m. We work remotely so my day consists of Zooms and calls with our team along with interviews, trainings, etc.

2:00 p.m. On an off day, I would meet family and friends for dim sum.

3:00 p.m. I carve out time each afternoon during to film content for retailers and our social media team.

4:30 p.m. On an off day, I’d take a long nap before sunset cocktails.

7:15 p.m. Early supper.

Diptyque Paris has opened a new flagship on Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. “With this transformation, we bring Diptyque’s brand journey to life, and confirm our commitment to providing exceptional client experiences,” says the brand’s CEO Fabienne Mauny. “We’ve enhanced the beauty of this emblematic address with stunning architectural and artistic details, inspired by the iconic landmarks of New York City. As our largest store in the United States, it stands as a testament to our dedication to taking the brand to new heights.” The newly-designed Diptyque Paris boutique boasts archways, stained glass windows, concrete, wood and glass, straight lines, circles and color palette of white, green, orange and brown. The brick façade with restored mosaic decorations gives way to interiors that resemble a light and airy apartment organized around two distinct spaces. Toward the front of the boutique is an open two-story space featuring a sculpture-like chandelier of glass globes is suspended over a table by Kelly Wearstler. The fragrance and candle collection are showcased on tables while a double-height bookcase highlights a selection of accessories and scented objects. A wood-paneled salon with a large dining table and fireplace is dedicated to the home and decoration collections while a bath salon (dedicated to the Art du Soin collection) is centered around a mirror surrounded by veneered furnishings with decorative elements.

The post A Dior J’adore Exhibition Debuts In Paris appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Since its inception in 1999, the Dior J’adore fragrance has been a celebration of flowers with dominant notes of jasmine sambac and damascena rose, reiterated over the decades by master perfumers like François Demachy and Francis Kurkdjian.

To this end, Dior has unveiled a new exhibition in Paris, “Dior J’adore,” at the Beaux-Arts de Paris on view through October 8, which tells the story of J’adore, from Christian Dior’s original love of flowers, to L’or de J’adore, the new essencede parfum by Kurkdjian. The all-encompassing sensory experience features a golden corridor, like the famous necklace that encircles the bottle (designed by Hervé van der Straeten), which immediately leads visitors deep into the private realm of the Maison. Artisans will offer interactive demonstrations and showcase the evolution from the couturier’s first, figure-8 shaped dresses that led to curvaceous bottle shape. Many artists have revisited the bottle’s design over the years including Victoire de Castellane, India Mahdavi and Jean-Michel Othoniel and all are on display here. Just as important as the contents is the image of J’adore. Over the years, J’adore’s ad campaigns have starred Carmen Kass and Charlize Theron and some have featured films directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. Artists Katerina Jeb, Fred Eerdekens, Refik Anadol and Yuriko Yakagi offer their interpretations of the ever-evolving perfume and its vibrant flowers.

What Does a Vitamin C Serum Do? https://dujour.com/beauty/new-vitamin-c-serums/ Mon, 08 Aug 2022 12:09:29 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=125263 Find out how to brighten and boost your skin’s radiance with these powerful vitamin C serums

The post What Does a Vitamin C Serum Do? appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Recently, it’s become clear to me that everyone of all ages should, with some exceptions, be adding vitamin C into our daily skincare routines. This powerful antioxidant protects our skin against free radical damage triggered by environmental aggressors like UV exposure and pollution. “As we age, the levels of vitamin C in our skin decrease,” explains aesthetician Edyta Jarosz of the Shafer Clinic in New York City. “That combined with exposure to environmental factors (UV light, pollution) and free radicals results in premature skin aging.” Adding vitamin C to your skin care routine can help offset this damage. “Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that works to stimulate collagen production by expediting cell turnover.” says Dr. Dendy Engelman, dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at the Shafer Clinic. “It also helps brighten the skin and reduce scarring and hyperpigmentation over time.”

“The great thing about vitamin C as an ingredient category is that it’s as versatile as it is beneficial for skin,” says Drunk Elephant founder Tiffany Masterson. “Ascorbic acid is the best overall form of vitamin C, because its wide-ranging benefits for skin are the most supported in terms of published research. It can also stand on its own in a formula—if you have a good amount in a serum or moisturizer, 10-15 percent, then you really don’t need much else to gain benefits like firmer skin, reduced hyperpigmentation and it pairs well with other actives, too.” Dr. Engelman recommends applying a topical vitamin C serum once per day, in the morning. “Because serums have a relatively small molecule size and potent ingredients, they tend to be highly effective, so using a vitamin C serum will help this antioxidant penetrate deeply into skin and work its magic,” Dr. Engelman explains. And, by wearing a vitamin C serum underneath your SPF, you also help slow down premature aging and create a barrier that prevents your sunscreen from causing breakouts. Jarosz agrees: “when used regularly (compliance is key), one will also notice a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and improved skin firmness.” Vitamin C also helps address uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

“The great thing about vitamin C as an ingredient category is that it’s as versatile as it is beneficial for skin.” –Tiffany Masterson.

Can those with sensitive and reactive skin use vitamin C as well? Yes, but with caution. “If applied too liberally, vitamin C can be irritating and cause acne breakouts, redness or irritation,” Dr. Engelman explains. For certain cases of extremely sensitive skin, she recommends using a low-concentration formula in the 8-10 percent range. “If you have sensitive skin, it’s important to test a small amount of your vitamin C serum before you apply on your face,” says Jarosz. “Switching your vitamin C use to every 2-3 days instead of daily can help improve your tolerance.” Masterson suggests avoiding vitamin C formulas that contain silicone, essential oils, fragrances or dyes or drying alcohols, which can inflame the skin.

Singer and actress Selena Gomez wanted to use her influence to make positive changes. So the Only Murders in the Building star (its second season is now streaming on Hulu) created a beauty line, Rare Beauty, offering a versatile and inclusive range of multi-use products. “Growing up in a makeup chair, I struggled with society’s impossible beauty standards, which negatively affected my mental health,” Gomez explains to DuJour. “I felt a lot of pressure at a young age to look a certain way, so I wanted to create a brand that changes the conversation around beauty and instead celebrates individuality and uniqueness. The beauty industry is so powerful, and there haven’t been enough conversations being had about mental health.” To this end, Gomez and her brand have committed to raising $100 million for mental health organizations over the next 10 years. “Historically, beauty can have a negative impact on mental health, and we are flipping that,” she says. “We are on a mission to destigmatize mental health, and one of the ways we do that is by donating 1 percent of all Rare Beauty sales to the Rare Impact Fund to expand mental health services and education for young people. If I had access to these types of resources growing up, my journey would look much different. Rare Beauty is on a mission to break down unrealistic standards of perfection and help everyone celebrate what makes them rare.”

Do-gooding aside, the makeup formulations are flattering, easy to use and effective for professionals or novices alike. “Everything has a weightless formula with buildable coverage meant to enhance your natural beauty,” says Gomez. “I like to apply makeup with my hands so it’s important for me to create products that are multipurpose, which is why we use a lot of liquids and creams,” she explains. The brand’s first launch, the Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation, has an inclusive range of 48 shades (“Inclusivity is very important to me, and that’s one of the reasons I started the brand,” she says.) and was followed by bestsellers including Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, Positive Light Liquid Luminizer, Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Sunscreen and Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Eyeliner. “I love seeing how the community uses products in different ways. It’s so inspiring and I learn a lot from our customers!”

What Should a Good Toner Do For You? https://dujour.com/beauty/new-skincare-toners/ Thu, 14 Jul 2022 11:36:27 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=124486 Forget old-school astringents. The new wave of toners is less about harsh stripping and more about new acids and replenishing the skin

The post What Should a Good Toner Do For You? appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
There are many myths about toners, used to remove dirt and oil from the skin, that have been debunked over the years. “There weren’t a ton of options for treating blemishes or congestion many years ago, when harsh astringent toners were prevalent,” says celebrity aesthetician and skincare entrepreneur Shani Darden, whose best-selling Sake Toning Essence combines the best of a toner with the benefits of an essence. “A common—though very wrong—idea was that in order to treat blemishes, you needed to dry the skin out. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Drying out the skin can actually exacerbate breakouts.” Alcohol in toners was a major culprit.

“While toners of the past contained alcohol for the purpose of drying out excess oil and treating acne breakouts, we now recognize that alcohol is far too harsh on the skin,” says Dr. Dendy Engelman, dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at the Shafer Clinic in New York City. “Today’s formulas are created more consciously to nourish—not strip—the skin.” Different formulations now target skin types and concerns. “Today, toners are created with ingredients that offer even more benefits to the skin, not just toning,” says Amanda Macino, Valmont’s director of training for North America. “They are skin type–specific, including for dry skin, which wasn’t always the case.”

The newest crop of toners have different skill sets and ingredients for a variety of skin types. “They are not one-size-fits-all, because nowadays, toners are more of a counterpart to serums,” says Emily Parr, co-founder of skincare brand HoliFrog. “I’m seeing toners with exfoliating acids or enzymes, others with a plethora of antioxidants and even more that focus on hydration. Toners are far less about toning and more about delivering a set of actives to the skin that are not present elsewhere in your regime.”

“Toners are not universal and they do not do the same thing across the board.” – Emily Parr

HoliFrog’s new hydrating and disinfecting Utopia Microflora Toner features hypochlorous acid, black bee honey ferment, apple cider vinegar and sunflower sprout. “I became increasingly intrigued with hypochlorous acid and its benefits for everyone from eczema sufferers to acne-prone people like myself,” says Parr. “Its ability to act as an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory really excited me, so I knew that a toner would be the best fit for this ingredient in our lineup.”

Used after the cleansing step to flood the skin with active nutrients, toners are meant to balance, hydrate and brighten the skin so that it is prepped for the products that follow. “A toner should be used when there is an active set of ingredients that are not being delivered in your serums or moisturizer,” says Parr. “There is no one universal toner that everyone should be using after they wash their face, because it’s a function of the active ingredients in the toner and the active ingredients in the steps that follow the toner.” Toners also shouldn’t be used to break down makeup. “I recommend that everyone use toner—not for removing makeup, but for rebalancing your skin and giving it an extra dose of clarifying, brightening and hydrating benefits,” says Dr. Engelman.

Addicted to Anya https://dujour.com/beauty/anya-taylor-joy-dior-interview/ Fri, 01 Jul 2022 20:29:03 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=124450 The Northman star Anya Taylor-Joy talks about her newest role as the spokesperson for Dior Addict lipstick

The post Addicted to Anya appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
The American-born, English Argentine actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and the recent adaptation of Emma (she also had a recurring role on Peaky Blinders), rose to stardom in Netflix’s 2020 original series The Queen’s Gambit as a gifted chess player. Now, the 26-year-old actress is starring opposite Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke and Alexander Skarsgård in April’s action adventure film The Northman. When she’s not busy filming in far-flung destinations around the world, she’s spending time with her actor-musician boyfriend, Malcolm McRae.

Taylor-Joy talked to DuJour Media, founded by Jason Binn, about popcorn, lipstick and how her relationship with beauty has evolved over the years.

What’s your first memory of Dior?

I used to wear Miss Dior Cherie as a teenager and I was completely obsessed with it. I remember discovering it and being heartbroken when it was discontinued. I later found out, having met with the incredible Dior patrimony team, that the difference is that they took out the popcorn notes, which makes a lot of sense considering my job and my proclivity toward popcorn. It makes a lot of sense that I liked something that was popcorn-scented.

What inspires you most about the brand?

The sense of timeless grace that the House has, but with this real sense of freshness. It feels like Dior dresses the modern woman while still retaining this quality of elegance, and I love that. It feels very graceful.

Taylor-Joy puckers up in Dior Addict Lipstick in Dior 8

Taylor-Joy puckers up in Dior Addict Lipstick in Dior 8

What do you love about Dior Addict lipstick?

I love the energy it gives me when I put it on. I am someone who keeps quite a bare face, because whenever I do work, I have a lot of makeup on. In my own time, I don’t tend to wear as much. The most I will do is put on lipstick. It’s very easy to do and yet it completely changes your attitude, and I think that’s what Dior Addict is for me. I love that it feels so playful, that you can dress up your lipstick and it’s refillable. It has this wonderful shine to it that I really enjoy.

“I love it when someone compliments me on the shade of my lipstick or they say they haven’t seen that shade before.” – Anya Taylor-Joy

What is your daily beauty routine?

I wash my face every morning and apply toner and sunscreen. That’s my morning routine; at night, I do the same except instead of sunscreen, I put on the Dior Prestige serum and cream because it not only helps fight against all daily aggressions, but also help renew my skin elasticity. It feels really luxurious, and the beautiful smell also helps me unwind and relax. I love roses, and it’s so lovely to go to bed smelling like one.

What beauty products are always in your bag?

Dior Prestige La Mousse Micellaire face cleaner, Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara in Black and Dior Addict lipstick in the shade Dior 8. I look for a unique shade in a lipstick, as well as staying power. I love it when someone compliments me on the shade of my lipstick or they say they haven’t seen that shade before.

Day in the Life: Victoria Beckham https://dujour.com/beauty/day-in-the-life-victoria-beckham/ Wed, 01 Jun 2022 18:20:54 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=124503 The cosmetics entrepreneur and fashion mogul takes us through a jam-packed day in her very high-heeled shoes

The post Day in the Life: Victoria Beckham appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
British fashion and beauty entrepreneur Victoria Beckham ventured into the beauty space, creating two best-selling capsule collections with Estée Lauder before launching Victoria Beckham Beauty in 2019 in partnership with industry veteran Sarah Creal. Beckham set out to create a new standard of clean luxury: her makeup and skincare products are cruelty-free, sustainably minded, cleanly formulated and high-performing. “We wanted to create a beauty brand with a strong focus on clean formulas that really perform and feel luxurious in your routine,” explains Beckham. “We didn’t think there was anyone out there that was pulling these futuristic elements together.” Victoria Beckham Beauty stems from the idea that beauty should complement and enhance the dynamic life you lead, and its devoted fans like Melanie Grant, Tracy Anderson, Cassandra Grey, Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner clearly agree. “We wanted to create something that is desirable, a pleasure to use and has a soul,” says Beckham. “Our brand is coming from our point of view, and we are creating things that are authentic to our vision. Everything we do brings together clean ingredients, responsible sourcing and sustainably minded design; our goal from inception has been to create true luxury performance in clean beauty.”

The entrepreneur shared with DuJour Media, founded by Jason Binn, how she spends a typical day in London.

7:00 A.M.: I wake up and get Harper up and ready for school. We catch up over breakfast and I get through emails from overnight while she packs up her bag. With my fashion team based in London and beauty based in NYC, I’m always on.

8:00 A.M.: David and I like to take Harper to school together. After the school run, we go to a workout with our trainer.

10:00 A.M.: I shower as quickly as I can and head to the office. I love being in person with my team. These past years, working remotely, have been a challenge.

10:30 A.M.: Every day is different, but I pack my days with back-to-back meetings to try to be as productive as possible. For example, today I met with my design team on our new monogram that will debut in our pre-autumn/winter collection. I am excited for this design and to extend it into new categories such as outerwear.

“We wanted to create something that is desirable, a pleasure to use and has a soul.” – Victoria Beckham

1:30 P.M.: I have a working lunch with my team. This is typically my first meal of the day. For the rest of the afternoon, I snack on almonds to keep myself full until dinner.

6:00 P.M.: I get home for dinner with the family. This is the most important part of my day. It’s sacred in our household. Afterwards, we relax together, typically watching some television. Harper is really into Newsround, and David insists on watching Friends or Modern Family nearly every night.

8:00 P.M.: Harper and I both love our evening beauty routines. I love a warm bath, and we typically do a face mask together as we wind down from the day. I am pretty religious about my skincare. Having clean, healthy skin is most important, so I cleanse my skin with Augustinus Bader Cleansing Balm to remove my makeup. After that, I use my Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader Cell Rejuvenating Power Serum and Cell Rejuvenating Priming Moisturizer.

10:00 P.M.: I get in bed and catch up on some email before putting the phone away. I’m trying to practice healthy sleep habits, which means less phone time and more mindfulness. I sleep in my VB silk pajama set with my Victoria Beckham Beauty x Slip Silk Eye Mask. And I have crystals on my nightstand for some extra clarity.

The post A Cancer Diagnosis That Led To A Skincare Empire appeared first on DuJour.

Bay Area resident Hillary Peterson’s goal was to bring a healthier, more sustainable approach to skincare after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 32. “Like many cancer survivors, I discovered something that I had never known before: that my personal care products contain toxins,” Peterson explains. “So, I embarked on a mission to make skincare so insanely effective and so luxurious that even those who were not particularly interested in clean beauty would love our products.” Her diagnosis led her to create True Botanicals, a clean, Made Safe–certified organic skincare line. Based in Mill Valley, California, Peterson has a beautiful garden that inspires her daily. Sustainable farming is at the forefront of True Botanicals’ approach; the products use potent actives and plant-powered ingredients that are responsibly sourced to create one of the most luxurious and safe skincare lines on the market. The brand’s famed Pure Radiance Oil is a consistent bestseller, but the brand’s latest products (Chebula Active Serum, Chebula Active Serum and Chebula Extreme Cream) feature chebula, a fruit that is one of the most potent and stable skincare ingredients around. “Chebula helps to address five signs of aging while maintaining hydration,” says Peterson. “It has quickly become central to our product offering, and the customer feedback has been fantastic.” Fans of the brand’s skin barrier–protecting products include Olivia Wilde, Kate Hudson, Laura Dern and Ariana Grande.

How To Tighten Everything From Your Core To Your Floor https://dujour.com/beauty/how-to-tighten-everything-from-your-core-to-your-floor/ Fri, 04 Mar 2022 01:45:26 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=123341 Exciting new technological treatments offer promising results for women with pelvic floor concerns

The post How To Tighten Everything From Your Core To Your Floor appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Whether you’re dealing with postpartum urinary incontinence or loss of enjoyment or pain during sexual intercourse, you’re not alone. Now, there are a slew of new technologies being targeted at making things more comfortable down there for women of all ages. “This once-taboo subject was something women just lived with,” explains New York City dermatologist Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, founder of PFrankMD. “Now, there is more research and development in this area and over the last 10 years, we went from almost nothing on the market aside from surgery to lasers and devices like Emsella and Emsculpt to address these issues.” At Dr. Frank’s New York City offices, the doctor offers a “Core to Floor” treatment using the Emsella chair with Emsculpt NEO on the abdomen. Emsculpt NEO uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic technology (HIFEM) stimulation that causes contractions of the abdomen and the pelvic floor muscles, which also helps to repair abdominal separation. Emsella uses electromagnetic energy to cause contractions of the supramaximal muscles. Emsella is a breakthrough treatment for strengthening the pelvic floor muscles, which aids in increased friction during intercourse and is a solution for incontinence. A patient sits dressed on the Emsella chair for 28 minutes while the machine effectively performs 11,000 Kegel exercises, causing deep pelvic floor muscle stimulation. “Using both of these technologies strengthens the muscles to help with urinary incontinence, while also allowing for increased blood flow, which can increase lubrication and vaginal wall tightness,” says Dr. Frank. “Whether you are postpartum or looking to improve balance, Emsella works to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which leads to better bladder control, core strength and posture. Emsella combined with Emsculpt NEO offers the ultimate in core-to-floor therapy. It is the first preventative and corrective solution to address the whole core and can improve strength, balance and posture while potentially alleviating back pain.” Dr. Frank recommends four sessions of Emsculpt NEO and five treatments of Emsella to see the intended results.

At Vspot Sexual Health Spa in Midtown Manhattan, founder and CEO Cindy Barshop focuses on all the normal stages of a woman’s life: pregnancies, the natural aging process, menstruation and menopause with a focus on sexual health and wellness. Vspot’s nonsurgical, results-oriented sex-enhancing treatments paired with high-performance technology—think vaginal rejuvenation lasers—offer intimate, transformative and medical vaginal healing treatments for issues you didn’t know there were solutions for. Herself a mother of twins, Barshop created this medical spa after feeling “a lack of support for myself and my body during the postpartum journey that, in a medical setting, typically ends after the six-week checkup. At the time there was no destination that would welcome and offer noninvasive treatments, let alone guidance, for women who needed vaginal rejuvenation. I was on a mission to modernize vaginal health and rejuvenation. Our clients are shocked at the solutions we offer because they couldn’t imagine that they’d even exist.” Barshop enlisted the help of renowned New York gynecologist Dr. Anita Grover to oversee the staff of female gynecologists and providers who focus on internal and intimate wellness to drive sexual health and confidence back into their clients’ lives. According to Barshop, one in four women suffer from leakage and 80 percent of women say they have difficulty orgasming.

Feminine health and sexuality have become more mainstream recently, and these topics no longer have a stigma associated with them. “By becoming more open and candid in discussions around sex and pleasure, we are able to empower people to take back control of their bodies and their confidence,” says Barshop. “Anything that moves our industry along and allows for women to set their intimate health as a priority is overwhelmingly positive.” Vspot’s offerings include Emsella, which strengthens the pelvic floor muscles to increase friction during intercourse and is FDA-approved for urinary leakage (after four to six sessions, women typically report an increase in lubrication and a decrease in urinary incontinence). Other popular offerings at Vspot include the the FemLift fractional CO2 laser, which relieves vaginal dryness, painful sex and vaginal laxity by applying concentrated thermal heating to the inner layers of vaginal tissue while creating collagen formation, which increases elasticity in the vaginal wall; Ultra Femme 360, a radio frequency treatment that helps improve vaginal laxity and urinary incontinence while preventing vaginal dryness and thinning muscles; and the O-Shot, a treatment to help women climax more quickly and intensely by stimulating stem cells, collagen and blood vessels, using PRP platelet-rich plasma injected into the clitoris. One writer who tried the O-Shot treatment and a series of Emsella treatments “felt practically virtuous sitting atop that ‘Kegel throne.’ As someone who has consistently made empty promises to herself to ‘get started on those Kegels tomorrow,’ it turns out taking the easy way out is exactly my speed. I definitely feel a tightening in that region and sex definitely feels better after vaginally delivering two children.”

A creative businesswoman and influential visionary, Estée Lauder’s story goes far beyond an empire of beauty brands. From growing up in Queens as the daughter of Hungarian immigrants to hosting dinner parties for the likes of Frank Sinatra and Princess Grace of Monaco, Lauder started at the bottom and fought hard for her success. The cosmetics mogul passed away in 2004, but her granddaughters, Aerin and Jane Lauder, have followed in her footsteps. The sisters have partnered to author a new book, Estée Lauder: A Beautiful Life (Assouline), which celebrates the mogul’s colorful life and flare for success through personal letters, photographs, company archives and more. The new tome is an inspiring ode to Estée Lauder’s commitment to valuing family and enhancing one’s natural beauty. “My grandmother, Estée, was an incredible role model,” says Aerin Lauder. “When she launched her business in the 1940s, she was way ahead of her time and taught me so many of the important lessons I know today. She passed on the importance and value of family, passion, commitment and beauty in everything you do.”

When perfumer Linda Sivrican and gardener Ron Finley struck up a friendship, she wanted to immerse him in her sensory world.

“Want to get out of what you do and into a different environment?,” she recalls asking the self-described Gangsta Gardener, who’s known for his TED Talk and activism work in L.A. around improving access to gardening and nutrition in under-served communities. “You might enjoy it for an afternoon,” Sivrican suggested.

In a sense, she was returning a favor. Despite her personal aversion to gardening, “I saw his MasterClass, and he inspired me to garden again,” she says. It made sense to share her expertise with Finley, given the overlapping experiential natures of scent crafting and gardening. Inviting him to her Capsule Parfumerie boutique and workshop on Melrose Avenue eventually led to a benefit collaboration under Capsule’s Fiele Fragrances label. It’s not the first time Sivrican embraced the opportunity to translate the spirit and character of other unorthodox professionals into the medium, given her past work with figures such as chef Jordan Kahn of Vespertine and Richard Christensen of the Flamingo Estate.

A Flower for You is the latest fragrance that incorporates these two multi-disciplinary creatives’ skills and sensibilities. Finley has a background in fashion design and Sivrican also operates Sesame superette store in L.A.’s historic Chinatown, offering goods that range from locally grown produce to her favorite Vietnamese sauces and imports, and is opening a restaurant in Long Beach. The perfume reflects his olfactory favorites from near and afar, and proceeds go to support the Ron Finley Project nonprofit organization.

After Finley conveyed his love of rose and vanilla with Sivrican, she was insistent on coming up with a blend that does “not smell like a typical rose” fragrance. So, she opted for a “deeper, richer” Madagascar vanilla and Egyptian rose. Vetiver from India adds “a little bit of a smokey note,” and rose geranium balances out the scent with “a bit of green and freshness” along with Hawaiian sandalwood. The overall result suggests a stroll through a garden that’s as dimensional and surprisingly unique as its namesake’s L.A. home base.

New Skincare Technologies to Try This Season https://dujour.com/beauty/seasonal-skincare-treatments-dr-dendy-engelman/ Tue, 12 Oct 2021 15:30:09 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=121880 We talked with Dr. Dendy Engelman to learn about the face and body treatments you need this fall

It comes as no surprise that after Labor Day, patients are clamoring to see their beloved dermatologist for a seasonal tune-up. “Every year at this time, I have a huge influx of patients who come in looking to correct the damage they have done to their skin over the spring and summer,” says top board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Dr. Dendy Engelman. “In office, I have multiple modalities to address these concerns: chemical peels, intense pulsed light, photodynamic therapy and fractionated CO2 treatments. At home, patients want to restart their prescriptions for retinoids to help build collagen and elastin and reverse sun damage.”

The New York City dermatologist, who works out of the Shafer Clinic at 535 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, talks to DuJour about the latest technologies she’s employing on her clients.

Injectables

“I’ve seen a huge uptick in injectables like Botox Cosmetic, Kybella and dermal fillers for the eyes, neck and jawline. When you simply look in the mirror head-on, the shadows and imperfections are less noticeable—but as people spend so much time on video calls these days, they have started to notice features that they are not so happy with. So, while filler and Botox in the periorbital and forehead areas are part of my patients’ regular maintenance, they are now starting to ask for injections like Kybella, which is great for reducing small areas of fat under the chin, and adding Voluma to help restructure and build out the chin and jawline.”

Lumenis NuEra Tight

“For skin smoothing and cellulite reduction, I love the new Lumenis NuEra Tight device, which uses multifocal radiofrequency energy to stimulate all three aspects of the dermal components—collagen, elastin and extracellular matrix polysaccharides like hyaluronic acid. When you increase the density of the dermis, it improves the overall smoothness of the skin structure, thus improving the appearance of cellulite. This noninvasive, zero-downtime treatment uses multiple handpieces to heat up the skin’s surface and is best suited for treating the face, upper arms, abdomen, flanks, buttocks and thighs. I recommend four to six treatments (each session is $800–$1,000) for clients who have cellulite or skin laxity—think post-pregnancy, when abdominal skin has been stretched to extremes. I’m really excited about it.”

QWO

“I recommend getting three QWO injections (the first and only FDA-approved injectable for the treatment of cellulite in women for use on the buttocks) three weeks apart. The injections take about 10 minutes—leaving plenty of time to get your Botox or a HydraFacial. There can be some localized bruising after the injections, but studies show most bruising lessened after each treatment and resolved in less than 21 days. QWO ranges from $1,000-$1,500 per session depending on the severity of the cellulite. I love that QWO was studied on all skin types and ethnicities, because women of all shapes, sizes and colors have cellulite!”

Active Ingredients

“As much as we try to prevent UV damage throughout the summer by wearing our sunscreen and staying out of the sun, we often head into fall with some accumulated damage, dullness and perhaps hyperpigmentation. I love active ingredients like AHAs and BHAs for removing dead skin cells and resetting our natural, healthy glow. In-office peels and facials are, of course, a fantastic way to do this. For those who prefer at-home skincare, Glo Skin Beauty offers a variety of professional-quality peel box kits designed for easy at-home use. I love their Retinol + C Smoothing Peel—it’s a great dose of antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients for the skin. Retinol, of course, is key for preventative anti-aging. I recommend that patients begin using it regularly, starting as early as their twenties.”

Emsculpt NEO

“For those looking for fat cell reduction and muscle toning with no downtime, Emsculpt NEO is a great noninvasive solution that combines two therapies in one by combining radio frequency and high-intensity focused electromagnetic energies (HIFEM) to activate around 24,000 supramaximal muscle contractions in a single 30-minute session—which is equivalent to doing the same number of crunches or squats—resulting in 25 percent more muscle and 30 percent less fat, on average. The treatment now has full-body treatment capabilities with the latest release of smaller paddle applicators for the biceps, triceps, inner and outer thigh, calves and saddlebags. The type of contraction activated with NEO is one that cannot be achieved by a standard workout/motion. I recommend patients do four 30-minute sessions over a four-week period.”

A Day In The Life: Kate Lee https://dujour.com/beauty/day-in-the-life-kate-lee-makeup-artist/ Tue, 05 Oct 2021 19:00:42 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=121804 The Chanel celebrity makeup artist takes us through a jam-packed day in her shoes

The post A Day In The Life: Kate Lee appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
English makeup artist Kate Lee has become the go-to makeup artist for stars like Lily-Rose Depp, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley. But it didn’t start out so glamorously. “I started right at the very bottom,” says Lee. After moving to London to study fashion and makeup interpretation at The London College of Fashion, Lee got a job at the Shu Uemura makeup counter at Harvey Nichols department store. “I learned so much and held that part-time position for many years to support my early career,” she says. The years that followed took her to Europe, where she assisted notable artists like Val Garland, Linda Cantello and Carole Lasnier. “Val was my absolute hero and a true mentor to this day,” Lee explains. “The years I spent alongside her were what formed me as an artist. She really helped me to position myself and to see clearly which part of the industry I was most suited to.” Having a mentor was so important to the young makeup artist as she navigated the industry. “There have been many people who have helped me along the way—too many to mention, but I appreciate each and every one of them.”

A chance meeting with actress Kate Winslet before Titanic made her a household name was a big breakthrough for Lee in her burgeoning freelance career. “We were both babies and got along like a house on fire!” she says. “Kate taught me a lot about makeup and the industry and eventually she asked me to work on a movie with her. We are still friends and she has not changed a bit.” Since those early years, the breadth of Lee’s work has expanded from fashion shows to celebrity and editorial work. “I love the diversity of work that I am allowed and, as much as I love editorial work, red carpets are really my joy,” she says. “There is nothing I love more than helping someone to feel incredible, and I’m looking forward to returning to the red carpet circuit. I love seeing what people are wearing and their different interpretations of glamour.”

Here’s how the makeup artist spends a typical day.

6:00 a.m. I wake up naturally around this time. This gives me a few hours to gather myself before going about my day. I generally start with either meditation, journaling or a Peloton cycling or yoga class depending on my mood and energy level. I light some incense or a candle.

7:00 a.m. I sit with my two little dogs and drink a cup of French Breakfast Tea with a drop of oat milk. This sets me up for the day as I don’t generally eat breakfast.

8:00 a.m. Jump in my car and head either to a studio or to a client’s house to begin work. Sometimes I am heading to the airport to fly somewhere for a few days—it depends on the gig. Almost every day is different so I never feel bored!

12:00 p.m. For lunch, I grab a healthy green salad with some sort of protein and maybe a juice. I also always make sure I have a cooler in my car with water and coconut water. Avoiding sugar and staying hydrated helps me to maintain my energy throughout the day. I’m currently obsessed with a supplement called Lmnt. It’s an electrolyte drink mix, so I usually drop a couple of those in my purse to add to water during the day. My favorite flavor is watermelon salt.

2:45 p.m. I talk to my agent around this time every day to discuss my current jobs and up-and-coming projects. She helps me manage my time and keeps me on track.

6:00 p.m. I am usually finished with work by this time, but sometimes I work later. Add to that at least an hour drive home most days when I’m in Los Angeles, and it tends to be a long day. I like to listen to podcasts while I am driving. I am very interested in nutrition and wellness, so my favorite podcasts at the moment tend to focus on those subjects, but I also like to get my news via a quick 30-minute podcast.

8:00 p.m. I have dinner with my husband and then prepare my kit for the next day. That sometimes means repacking my kit for a specific person or just cleaning my brushes and sanitizing my set bag.

9:30 p.m. I like to get to bed early. I take a shower, read, wind down and go to bed.

If you love a good eyebrow, chances are you have a few Anastasia Beverly Hills brow products in your makeup bag. From the ultra slim pencils to the waterproof pomade, the cosmetics brand has mastered a wide range of eyebrow shaping, styling and enhancing tools and become a cult favorite in the market. CEO and founder Anastasia Soare launched her brand in 1997 in Beverly Hills, California after working at a salon and offering clients her eyebrow shaping services based on the mathematical principle of thirds: the Golden Ratio. Soare applied this theory to brows and delivered balanced, proportional and individualized eyebrows. These clients helped build ABH into the eyebrow empire it is today. Since then, ABH has grown to sell makeup products for eyebrows, face, eyes and lips in over 25 countries around the globe.

While eyebrows are a hugely successful category for Anastasia Beverly Hills, the brand’s roster of face and eye makeup has become a go-to for celebrities, makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts in general. ABH recently launched its Magic Touch Concealer this August. The lightweight concealer features soft focus powders to blur any imperfections or discoloration and leave the skin feeling super natural. The skincare-centric formula includes glycerin, licorice root and amino acid-coated pigments to help moisturize and soothe the skin while also staying put. With 25 shades, this concealer can be used as a spot concealer, color corrector, highlight, contour and for all-over coverage. Pro tip: For dark circles under the eye, choose a shade with a peach undertone to color correct and brighten.

The newest addition to the Anastasia Beverly Hills lineup launches September 24 and is a versatile-yet-glamorous 12-pan face palette with ten eyeshadow shades and two blushes. The Primrose Palette offers rose-inspired pigments that range from dynamic metallics to super blendable and buildable mattes so you can opt for a sophisticated daytime vibe or a more dramatic evening look. The soft pink and bronzed copper blush shades are ideal for adding dimension to the face (and you don’t have to reach for a second palette!).

Emma Chamberlain’s Eyeliner at The Met Gala Was Flawless https://dujour.com/beauty/emma-chamberlain-retro-eyeliner-byredo-makeup-met-gala/ Wed, 15 Sep 2021 16:20:44 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=121494 The coffee connoisseur and YouTube sensation embodied retro glam while holding the mic for Vogue on the red carpet

The post Emma Chamberlain’s Eyeliner at The Met Gala Was Flawless appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
The 2021 Met Gala returned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art after postponing in 2020. The evening was a celebration of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” curated by Andrew Bolton. Celebrities embraced the theme with clever interpretations of old Hollywood looks, glamorous archival outfits and custom fashions only worthy of fashion’s biggest night out. Model Gigi Hadid rocked Prada, Kendall Jenner embodied Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy and Emma Chamberlain made her Met Gala debut in a custom Louis Vuitton dress. Chamberlain is no stranger to the brand after attending its fashion shows in Paris pre-pandemic and most recently being named the face of its FW21 show collection.

As a YouTube star known for her candor and unfiltered voice, as well as her sustainable coffee brand, Chamberlain Coffee, Emma Chamberlain was the perfect Vogue red carpet correspondent at this year’s Met Gala. The 20-year-old clutched her microphone and chatted up stars like Daniel Levy, Kris Jenner, Megan Thee Stallion and many more for playful clips that were posted to Vogue’s YouTube channel. Her cheeky personality and totally natural conversations were super endearing while her dress and beauty look were perfectly on point for the event.

Chamberlain’s Louis Vuitton dress took 290 hours to hand-embroider and included almost 21,000 microbeads, 9,000 rhinestones, 2,500 sequins, over 2,300 rococo style beads and nearly 2,000 Swarovski crystals. Her retro-inspired beauty look was created by makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan using Byredo makeup and Colleen Rothschild skincare products. “America today is all about being unapologetically yourself,” Deenihan says. “Emma is expressive, bold, confident and loud, and nothing encompasses that more than a bold eye with a pop of neon. It’s definitely not subtle and represents her generation and her place in pop culture.” With striking eyeliner in neon green, dramatic lashes and a neutral pout, Deenihan showcased Chamberlain’s youthful energy and flawless elegance. Below, Deenihan breaks down the entire Met Gala beauty look for Emma Chamberlain.

Skin Preparation Using Colleen Rothschild:

To keep Emma’s skin looking flawless from beginning to end, amazing skin prep is a must! To begin prepping, I applied a thin veil of the Colleen Rothschild Sheer Renewal Cream to Emma’s face. Next, to ensure that the foundation really hugs the skin, I used the Colleen Rothschild Black Tourmaline Primer. The Black Tourmaline Primer not only preps and primes the skin, it helps keep your face matte for that all-day wear. I applied a light foundation for a natural, flawless finish. Emma’s brows are unreal. To keep their gorgeous natural shape, I brushed them up with a brow brush and applied product to keep them in place.

Beauty Using Byredo Makeup:

The focus of Emma’s makeup are her gorgeous eyes. I started by sweeping the Byredo Colour Stick in La Scène across the lid, and slightly above the crease. To add depth and drama, I added the Byredo Colour Stick in Dravite to the inner and outer lid. Next, I lined her lower lash line and waterline with black. In the center of the lid, I placed the Byredo Colour Stick in Kumato and then pressed Karma from the Byredo Eyeshadow 5 Colour Palette in Sciomancer and Manila from the Byredo Corporate Colors Palette.

For the pop of neon, I used Scylla from the Byredo Eyeshadow 5 Colour Palette in Syren. To create the intense liner, I dipped the brush in a mixing liquid before the color and then swept it across the center of the upper lash line and inner corner of the eye. For that extra drama, I curled Emma’s lashes, and added one of my favorite lashes.

To finish the look, I added a generous coat of the Byredo Tears in Rain Mascara, and I applied Byredo Tinted Lip Balm in Argila.

Natalie Portman’s Decade of History With Miss Dior https://dujour.com/beauty/natalie-portman-miss-dior-fragrance-campaign/ Wed, 08 Sep 2021 15:00:36 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=121262 Academy Award-winning actress Natalie Portman talks to DuJour from Australia about her new Miss Dior fragrance campaign

The post Natalie Portman’s Decade of History With Miss Dior appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Natalie Portman has been in Australia for much of the last 18 months filming Thor: Love and Thunder (out in 2022) and spending time in the great outdoors with her husband, dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied, and their two children. She’s also been busy filming the campaign for the newly retooled Miss Dior eau de parfum scent and bottle design. Since its inception in 1947, Miss Dior has been the iconic fragrance of the Dior Maison and one of its bestsellers. Since 2011, the Academy Award-winning actress has been the face of the rosy Miss Dior scent, named after Catherine Dior, Christian’s sister and a French Resistance fighter during World War II. Portman’s femininity, confidence, love, energy and free-spiritedness have been hallmarks of the fragrance and its ad campaigns over the last 10 years.

We talked with Portman about new beginnings, returning to nature and how her relationship with scent and beauty has evolved over the years.

What are you looking forward to after a tough year?

“I think we spent so much time virtually living that I’d love us all to get off our devices and appreciate the beauty of the real world around us.”

What do you do to reconnect with nature?

“I love going on walks in the mountains or on the beach. Working in Australia has been such a blessing because there is such insanely beautiful and diverse nature here.”

How do you help protect nature in your own life?

“Nature is such a blessing to our lives and, unfortunately, under such threat from the way we live. My decision to not eat animal products is part of my commitment to living in a way that’s consistent with my desire to be part of helping nature.”

What was your first impression of the new Eau de Parfum?

“It’s so fresh and floral. It’s light at first, and then becomes more exuberant. It feels like a little cocoon smell.”

What message does the scent convey?

“It conveys happiness and confidence, and that’s what it is all about.”

How would you describe the new bottle design?

“It stays in the same spirit as the previous ones but even more precious, more elegant and couture. The bow is stunning, with incredible work on colors and technique from the Faure ateliers. You can see the savoir-faire that comes with this hand-tied bow. There’s more respect to the environment thanks to the reduction of glass.”

Miss Dior eau de parfum

Miss Dior eau de parfum

Does this fragrance remind you of anything in particular, a specific moment or memory?

“When I visited Grasse in the South of France with [perfumer] François Demachy, we witnessed the harvesting of the Grasse Rose, which is used to make Miss Dior, and it was a magical experience that helped me understand the art of what goes into making a perfume.”

As an actress, how has your character evolved through the years in each Miss Dior campaign?

“I feel so lucky to have had the character evolve over the years as I do. She looks for love and finds it, and then continues to find ways to seek and express her joy, her passion and her pleasure.”

You’ve been the face of Miss Dior since 2011, one of the most iconic scents of the House. What has this experience been like for you?

“It’s been such a lucky experience. Dior really feels like a family and is a beautiful cooperation of hundreds of artists working together. The level of expertise and tradition is something I am so lucky to have gotten to witness and celebrate.”

Natalie Portman for Miss Dior

Who is the Miss Dior woman to you?

“I think the Miss Dior woman is someone who is seeking beauty, love and her own truth in the world. All of the most romantic ideals. I think there’s a spirit of Catherine Dior, which was to put herself at great risk to do the right and noble thing, that is embodied in this perfume her brother originally created for her.”

What role does perfume play in your everyday life, and do you have a special way of applying it?

“I love scent and it feels central to our emotion. I love to spray my Miss Dior and walk through it, like my mother taught me, which has the sensual experience too of feeling like it’s a light rain of the most beautiful scent. Also, then it’s not too strong and ends up lightly in your hair, which most people will smell most!”

What is your relationship to perfume and how did it come to be?

“I got my first perfume bottle as a gift from Jean Reno when we finished filming Léon: The Professional when I was 12, and I remember feeling really grown up. Perfume felt like a sign of womanhood to me.”

Rouge Dior #100 Nude Look, Dior Forever Skin Correct #2W, Diorshow Mascara #090 Pro Black.

Rouge Dior #100 Nude Look, Dior Forever Skin Correct #2W, Diorshow Mascara #090 Pro Black.

Has working as an actress changed the way you’ve thought about beauty over time?

“I think because I always had to be made up for work, it never felt special or luxurious to me—it always felt like work. And so, in my own life, it wasn’t as fun as I see it is for my friends. Now, after having kids, I’m starting to appreciate it and get more excited by it again.”

What’s your current beauty routine?

“I use sunscreen every day, and usually use some light concealer (Dior Forever Skin Correct), mascara and Rouge Dior lipstick (a nude shade or 999 according to my look and how I feel). At the end of the day, I always wash my face and moisturize before bed.”

24 Hours With Lawless Beauty Founder https://dujour.com/beauty/24-hours-with-lawless-beauty-founder-annie-lawless/ Wed, 01 Sep 2021 15:00:15 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=121195 Annie Lawless takes us from beach strolls with her daughter to glam for her brand's newest launches in one busy day

The post 24 Hours With Lawless Beauty Founder appeared first on DuJour.

It has become common knowledge that in order to execute the ultimate makeup routine, skincare comes first. From double cleansing to moisturizing and hydrating, a good daily (and nightly) skincare regimen will give you the best canvas to apply all your favorite beauty products on. This marriage of skincare and makeup has helped put a much brighter spotlight on clean beauty over the last few years. No one wants to risk ruining their flawless skincare routine with less-than-amazing makeup. So, ingredients, production and packaging have all become top priority for brands like Ilia Beauty, Tata Harper and Saie when creating makeup products. Annie Lawless, CEO and founder of clean beauty brand Lawless Beauty, grew up with a focus on ingredients after she was diagnosed with Celiac disease. “Once I removed gluten from my diet, my eczema completely cleared up and that was a huge moment for me. I began to really care about ingredients and what I was putting on my skin and in my body,” Lawless says.

Since launching in 2017, Lawless Beauty has created a roster of stellar clean makeup products such as the Forget The Filler Lip Plumping Line Smoothing Gloss and silicone-free Set The Stage Hydrating Priming Serum that allow consumers to enjoy pigment and performance without giving up quality. “I love makeup as much as I love clean ingredients so Lawless is the marriage of that. It is what you expect in great, artistry level makeup, without ingredients you don’t want on your skin and packed with skin-loving ingredients that you do,” Lawless says.

The brand’s latest launch is the Conseal The Deal Modern Full Coverage Foundation, made with Nasturtium Flower Extract, Goji Berry and Bisabolo & Ginger Extracts to protect, soothe and smooth skin. Lawless applies the foundation directly onto her skin and uses the Lawless Beauty foundation brush to buff the product out. “If I feel I have applied too much, or simply want a more blended and seamless finish, I then go over my application with my lightly damp beauty sponge to soak up any excess products, press the foundation into my skin, and smooth out any brush strokes. This is a great trick for making any foundation look more skin-like!”

The Paris-born luxury parfumerie, Diptyque, has been at the forefront of converging fragrance with art since its inception 60 years. In honor of this anniversary, the Maison has unveiled a limited-edition collection of candles, fragrances, and art all inspired by five global destinations. Diptyque’s exclusive new collection, Le Grand Tour, will transport you to Paris, Venice, Milies, Kyoto and Byblos through scent, design and a bit of wanderlust. Le Grand Tour pays homage to the brand’s history and heritage that its three founders dreamt into reality 60 years ago.

From a classic Paris candle infused with curiosity and whispers of discovery to a refreshing scented oval inspired by a stopover in Milies, Greece, Le Grand Tour will take you on a beautiful journey that celebrates travel and style. Other products include a trio of travel-size faux de toilette that will whisk you away to the island of Venice; a floral perfume emblazoned with a Sarayi patterned fabric celebrating the culture of Kyoto; and a Byblos candle that will transport you to a charming cafe in the heart of Lebanon.

To accompany the collection and further its creative vision, Diptyque will be launching several initiatives over the next few months including art exhibitions, limited-edition collaborations with notable artists from across the globe and international pop-up experiences.

Everything’s Coming up Rosie https://dujour.com/beauty/rosie-huntington-whiteley-launches-rose-inc-beauty/ Mon, 23 Aug 2021 18:48:36 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=121112 After years of being in front of the camera, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley went behind the scenes to launch her own beauty brand, Rose Inc.

The post Everything’s Coming up Rosie appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
After launching her editorial platform, Rose Inc., in 2018 to build a beauty community online, model and entrepreneur Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wanted to bring her own experience in the industry to the masses. “I’m a frustrated magazine editor-slash-creative director at heart, so I thought I should build a platform where I can do it all,” she says on a Zoom from London one July afternoon. In the months that followed, she began to meet with investors and partners about creating a complementary product line. “Sticking my name on something wasn’t meaningful or thoughtful to me,” she explains. “I felt certain that if I was going to bring a product line to the market, I wanted it to be as innovative and value-driven as possible.”

A meeting with clean beauty maverick Caroline Hadfield (who is responsible for launching Biossance and Pipette) followed and a visit to Amyris’ lab followed. “I was really blown away by the innovation, and I knew our aesthetics and values were aligned,” Huntington-Whiteley says. In August 2019, she signed on with Amyris, the biotechnology and science powerhouse, with Hadfield as CEO. “We shared similar values in that we wanted to develop products that would be good for people and the environment,” says Hadfield. “To kick off, I had asked Rosie to meet and provide a few benchmark products to start brainstorming around the brand and collection. She arrived with two suitcases full of products! I knew right there we shared a passion for beauty and that our partnership would be a great success.”

“I’m a frustrated magazine editor-slash-creative director at heart, so I thought maybe I should build a platform where I can do it all.”

Two years later, Rose Inc. has debuted its first six-product collection of skincare and color makeup: Modern Essentials. The multipurpose skin and makeup products include Softlight, a luminous hydrating concealer in 20 shades, Lip Sculpt Amplifying Lip Color, Brow Renew Enriched Eyebrow Shaping Gel, Blush Divine Radiant Lip and Cheek Color, Radiant Brightening Serum and Skin Resolution Clarifying Toner. “I’ve had acne-prone skin my entire adult life,” says Huntington-Whiteley. “I wear these products every day and they give instant results. All of our products are ultra-nourishing, and it’s about giving back to the skin.” These gentle-yet-powerful products feature five proprietary bioengineered botanical ingredients: the Amyris-innovated squalene, hemisqualane, bisabolol, biosilicia and cannabigerol (CBG). The 100 percent non-comedogenic, vegan formulas also feature safe synthetic ingredients such as vitamin E that is derived from 100 percent non-GMO sunflower seeds. The first collection recently launched on Rose Inc.’s website and at Sephora nationwide (worldwide retailers include Space NK and Mecca). The brand will continue to launch skincare and color makeup side-by-side with future launches like eye cream, eye shadow, body products, bronzer and lip products to follow.

Transparency, inclusivity and affordability were other important factors for the entrepreneur. “Accessibility has always been important to me,” says Huntington-Whiteley, “being accessible with a fair price point while being aspirational.” To that end, the line is all priced under $100. “Rose Inc. is committed to full transparency with everything we do—packaging, formula and ingredients and benefits. And we know our products are efficacious,” echoes Hadfield. To that end, the sleek packaging boasts a minimum of 25 percent recycled plastic, 100 percent recyclable glass bottles and cartons made with 30 percent hemp and 90 percent recycled plastic liners.

Having a loyal following helped the brand in its product development. “We were able to tap right into our Rose Inc. community and the data we’ve sourced,” says Huntington-Whiteley. The team also tapped Los Angeles-based makeup artist Cherish Brooke Hill as a consultant. “Shade matching was important to us,” says Huntington-Whiteley. “Cherish helped make sure we had inclusive shade offerings.” So what’s Huntington-Whiteley’s definition of beauty? “I always go back to something my mother said early on when she was teaching me how to apply makeup and I was caking it on. She told me to have a more natural hand and enhance what I have, not hide what I have.” Now, for the 34-year-old mother, that advice has taken on a new meaning. “It means focusing on the aspects of myself that I’m proud of and want to enhance. There’s beauty in being yourself.”

24 Hours With Saie Founder Laney Crowell https://dujour.com/beauty/24-hours-with-saie-founder-laney-crowell/ Mon, 16 Aug 2021 19:09:54 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=121029 This clean beauty brand’s CEO takes us through a busy day and reveals how she uses Saie's newest launch

The post 24 Hours With Saie Founder Laney Crowell appeared first on DuJour.

Content creation has always been at the forefront of Laney Crowell’s professional endeavors. After cutting her teeth at brands like Lucky and Gucci, Crowell earned the role of Estée Lauder’s first Executive Director of Digital Communications, allowing her to create digital content, build engagement and develop the brand’s first influencer marketing and guest blogger programs. With a passion for creating digital content and sparking conversation online, Crowell launched her clean beauty brand, Saie, in 2019. “We’re definitely always digital content first, especially since we were a brand born during COVID, so our online storytelling is an essential part of how we connect with the Saie Community,” Crowell says.

In the brand’s first year, Saie has already gained support from celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Minka Kelly and America Ferrara. The newest launch is Sun Melt, a clean cream-balm bronzer made with Colloidal Oatmeal, Grapeseed Oil and Elderberry extract to perfect combine skincare with makeup. So how does the CEO and founder of Saie use her newest product? “I apply Sun Melt in Medium Bronze with the Big Brush on the sides of my cheeks under my cheekbones. It makes me look so snatched,” Crowell says.

Crowell adds that the lightweight beauty product will be joined by other makeup launches in the future, as requested by the Saie community. “We’re going to be expanding into more makeup categories and rounding out the Saie experience so you can truly have your makeup bag be all Saie.”

We caught up with Crowell to see how she spends a busy day with her two daughters and a blossoming beauty brand. Click through the gallery above for a look.

A Day In The Life: Pati Dubroff https://dujour.com/beauty/a-day-in-the-life-makeup-artist-pati-dubroff/ Fri, 23 Jul 2021 15:30:27 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=120477 The Chanel celebrity makeup artist takes us through a jam-packed day in her shoes

The post A Day In The Life: Pati Dubroff appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
American makeup artist Pati Dubroff is the woman behind the scenes enhancing the faces of beautiful actresses like Margot Robbie, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Kirsten Dunst, Dakota Johnson and Natalie Portman. The bicoastal artist is beloved by photographers such as Peter Lindbergh, Tom Munro and Annie Leibovitz and is a Chanel celebrity makeup artist. She got her start working at a department store makeup counter and on music videos before going on to assist artist and entrepreneur François Nars. “Education was hard to come by then,” Dubroff explains. “I hustled and freelanced and said yes to everything, whether it was paid or not. I was hungry for education and experience. I’m so grateful for all of the people I’ve met and the opportunities I was afforded from being François’ assistant, not to mention all that I learned about the craft of makeup and set etiquette.” One thing Dubroff always needs—whether she’s working or not—is good light. “Where you do your makeup is just as important as, if not more important than, the makeup itself,” she explains. “Good lighting is key to everything.”

So what’s the best tip she’s learned along the way? “Leave your eyebrows alone (as in don’t pluck a lot of hair out) and make sure to fill in as needed, as brows really are key to framing the face. Curling lashes is also really important for opening the eyes. If I do anything, I will always curl my lash and do a quick brow fill in. Especially with wearing masks, it’s important to bring attention to the eye area!”

Here’s how Pati Dubroff spent the Sunday of the Academy Awards, getting Robbie glammed up for the red carpet and ceremony.

6:00 a.m. I am an early bird and cherish the quiet mornings for time to meditate and reflect on what the day will bring. For many years, I have practiced oil pulling (which is an ayurvedic cleansing ritual), so the first half-hour I am awake, I am swishing oil in my mouth.

7:00 a.m. I check emails and make my daily list. Lists help me get organized and prioritize to best utilize my time. My husband makes me chai along with a bowl of berries and Greek yogurt.

8:00 a.m. I do a virtual workout with my Pilates teacher, Kiera Obst. We have never met in person, as she lives on the East Coast. Kiera is one of the gifts of quarantine: I discovered her when looking for online Pilates training, and she is a true master and has helped me gain more strength and confidence.

9:30 a.m. I double-check that my makeup kit is fully stocked and that I have everything I could possibly need for the big day.

10:30 a.m. Take a rapid COVID-19 test (my fourth COVID test this week), and I am very grateful that we test so often. This is part of our new normal for working safely, and I am here for it.

11:15 a.m. Quick meeting with Margot Robbie’s team, her stylist Kate Young, hairdresser Bryce Scarlett and manicurist Tom Bachik to finalize our plan for Margot’s red carpet look and check in to see if there are any last minute changes.

11:30 a.m. I set up my makeup and grab some photos of the beautiful products I plan to use on Margot today.

12:00 p.m. Glam time!

2:00 p.m. We do photos and last-minute touch-ups on Margot. It’s so nice to have time built into the schedule for photos, as these photos can capture the true essence of the look.

2:45 p.m. Order some room service at the hotel, pack up and watch the preshow.

6:30 p.m. Head home to watch the rest of the show and decompress from the day with my family.

8:15 p.m. My husband serves dinner and I take a pause from thinking about Oscars and the red carpet and reconnect with my husband and daughter.

9:00 p.m. The pause is over, and I scroll and scroll looking at all the beautiful looks created by my peers. Hollywood glamour makes me so happy!

10:30 p.m. Bath time! I end every day by taking a bath. It helps me release the tension of the day and gets me ready for a good night’s sleep.

11:15 p.m. Lights out.

Piccioli exclusively shot the campaign for the makeup collection with 16 unique talents, each one expressing a different shade of Valentino and collectively representing a “Valentino Chorus.”

“Beauty is a complexity resolved through love. Beauty is democratic. I look at the identity of each individual, the uniqueness that encloses diversity and inclusivity. Beauty is about grace. Grace is something that you cannot describe, it is a perception. Beauty is something that gives me emotion. It is a connection,” Piccioli says.

How Brooke Shields Embraces Self-Care https://dujour.com/beauty/brooke-shields-self-care-rituals-colgate/ Wed, 30 Jun 2021 19:53:00 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=120585 The model and actress reveals her desert island skincare products and the importance of a confident smile

The post How Brooke Shields Embraces Self-Care appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
It feels as though the term “self-care” has seriously catapulted into social media stardom over the last year. From Instagrammable bathtubs decorated with candles and bubbles to somewhat exhaustive 24-step nighttime skincare routines on TikTok, self-care can really be defined as whatever makes you feel good and allows you to take a breath (both physically and mentally). For actress and model Brooke Shields, her own self-care rituals have admittedly evolved over the last year along with her outlook on the practice itself. “I have learned to respect the ritual of it all a little bit more. I used to rush passed everything and after this last year, I’ve learned to appreciate the more ritualistic approach to self-care and it being a time for myself, not just a chore,” Shields says.

Part of this updated outlook on self-care rituals came as a result of Shields partnering with Colgate this year, marking the duo’s third time working together since the first Colgate campaign Shields starred in at just nine years old. “I used to separate my teeth from my skin by sort of brushing, flossing and just getting it over with. Colgate has taught me so much more about the importance of gum health and oral care and the routine of that,” Shields says. The new Colgate Gum Renewal toothpaste targets and actually reverses early gum damage and offers four types: Whitening Restoration Gel, Whitening Restoration Paste, Sensitivity Repair Gel, and Enamel Fortify Gel.

Brooke Shields for Colgate

“I think we compartmentalize so much of self-care and one thing that I found during COVID was that I went through a lot of extremes until I found a balance. The pendulum had to balance out in the middle for me and now that involves making my teeth important and taking a more well-rounded type of approach to self-care,” Shields explains.

While Shields now embraces the circularity of her self-care rituals from oral care and diet to exercise and skincare, the 56-year-old mother of two admits there is one thing she wishes she had started practicing from a younger age. “I wish I had started using sunblock a lot earlier. I’m from the era where you put baby oil on and baked out in the sun,” she says. “That damage doesn’t show up until later and I’ve had stuff taken off my face and I just really wish I would have been more cognizant of the damage back then.” Shields adds that with the advent of spray tans and self-tanners, today’s generation is lucky to be able to get that bronze glow without the damage.

“Your body and everything you are, physically, emotionally and mentally, does a lot to take care of you so we need to take care of it.”

Brooke Shields for Colgate Gum Renewal

So, with oral hygiene and skincare morphing into one as part of her self-care routine, what would be Brooke Shields’ top three desert island skincare products? “I would definitely bring sunscreen, a very strong lip balm and a thick nighttime moisturizer,” she says, along with a tube of Colgate Gum Renewal, of course.

By teaming up with Colgate once again, Shields is revitalizing her own smile and hoping to spread much more than gum health awareness. “Your smile is how you greet the world. It’s what you put forward and it emanates from you. I think that it’s infectious,” she says. “I think to smile with confidence, it just beams out of you and you make other people smile. It’s like you can’t help but feel that positivity that’s being put forth into the world.”

The Summer of Sobel https://dujour.com/beauty/sobel-skin-dr-howard-sobel-skincare-treatments/ Mon, 28 Jun 2021 17:00:33 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=120305 From radiofrequency treatments to liposuction and injectables, what’s new and exciting at the Sobel Skin clinic

The post The Summer of Sobel appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Dr. Howard Sobel, founder of Sobel Skin on on the Upper East Side and attending dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, has been bombarded with clients clamoring for his state-of-the-art treatments. “We have all been hiding under a mask since last year, and now people are treating themselves to look and feel their best, and that starts with their face and their skincare,” explains Dr. Sobel. “When my office reopened last June, we were deluged with appointments for Botox and fillers like Juvéderm. The next priority was rejuvenating the skin as quickly as possible to smooth and brighten the skin.” His practice uses Vivace, a combination of microneedling, radiofrequency and LED light therapy that is the next wave of skin rejuvenation therapy to diminish fine lines, wrinkles and blemishes and provide a more youthful appearance by firming and lifting sagging skin. “We have also created the Zoomable, which is a mix of filler, Botox and laser treatments that can eliminate or stall the need for a facelift.”

Once the face is tackled, clients want to focus on their bodies and get bikini-ready for summer. So what is he offering to combat the COVID 15 (pounds)? “Tumescent Liposuction, which I do under local anesthesia in our operating room, sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat that has not responded to diet and exercise from the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck.” Patients can see permanent fat reduction and be back to work in three to five days. For a less invasive treatment, Sobel recommends TruSculpt iD and Emsculpt, both radiofrequency devices to permanently destroy small pockets of fat in one 15-minute session and tighten up flabby muscles, respectively.

We asked Dr. Sobel to fill us in on some of the newest innovative treatments and services on offer at his office.

Liquid Facelift

“It can offer many of the benefits of a traditional facelift without the patient having to undergo a surgical procedure. Liquid facelifts can restore lost volume, diminish lines and wrinkles, redefine the jawline, and lift the cheekbones and sagging brows when a combination of Botox, fillers and lasers are used in the proper sequence.”

CoolPeel

“CO2 lasers have long been the gold standard in treating wrinkles, age spots, acne scars and other blemishes, as well as tightening skin and balancing tone. Traditional CO2 treatments, however, have long been associated with considerable downtime. The precision and control of the CoolPeel allow you to get the skin resurfacing benefits without the downtime and risk.”

Emtone

“For the body, Emtone is one of the newest body devices and is our first answer to cellulite. It is a quick, noninvasive treatment that uses radiofrequency and targeted pressure energy to reduce the appearance of cellulite. This is great to use with Emsculpt for optimum results for muscle tightening, fat reduction and cellulite improvement.”

Combating Maskne

“Maskne is definitely one of the biggest skincare concerns we’ve seen this year. I recommend cotton or silk masks, which have been shown to be an effective mask while also preventing facial irritation. I also recommend incorporating a gentle cleanser into your routines to degunk pores but also to soothe. Sobel Skin Rx Bio Hyaluronic Moisture Cream Extreme can help restore the skin barrier that is disrupted by wearing a mask.”

Dr. Sobel’s Secret Skincare Weapons:

Sobel Skin Rx 4.5% Retinol Complex Night Treatment

“This night treatment is supercharged with 4.5 percent retinol to visibly transform skin while you sleep. The 4.5 percent level of strength rivals that of most prescription retinoids.”

Sobel Skin Rx 30% Glycolic Acid Peel Concentrate

Since its creation in 1921, Chanel No. 5 has become a fragrance wardrobe staple worldwide. A mysterious, abstract, rich and floral scent enhanced in 1986, by Jacques Polge, as an eau de parfum. With notes of may rose and jasmine along with bright citrus top notes and a touch of bourbon vanilla, the sensual scent is a classic for a reason. Celebrity fans of the scent include Marilyn Monroe, Ali MacGraw, Lauren Hutton, Catherine Deneuve, Marion Cotillard and Nicole Kidman.

To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the iconic fragrance, the brand is launching a body and bath collection called Chanel Factory 5. The five minimally-but-beautifully-packaged products in the No. 5 line include Bath tablets (effervescent tablets that dissolve in water and subtly scent skin), The Shower Gel (housed in 20 individual pods), The Body Oil (a rich oil for body and hair dispensed from a utilitarian-style bottle with a tapered spout for targeted application), The Body Cream (reinvented in an oversize paint tube) and The Body Lotion (a light fluid packaged in a soft, squeezable stand-up pouch for easy application). Five products that guarantee you’ll be softly swathed in Chanel No. 5 all summer.

New Technology Treatments for a Guaranteed Glow https://dujour.com/beauty/fraxel-diamondglow-resurfacing-treatments/ Mon, 14 Jun 2021 15:00:00 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=120090 A look at two resurfacing treatments to get you ready for summer: Fraxel and DiamondGlow

The post New Technology Treatments for a Guaranteed Glow appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Whether you opt for an ablative fractional laser treatment or a gentle dermabrasion device, new technologies can wipe away those winter blues and prep your skin for summer sun. Fraxel is ideal for treating sun damage on the face, neck and chest as well as acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and melasma. “This laser will help with skin texture, firmness, elasticity and pore size appearance,” says Dr. Anne Chapas, founder and medical director of Union Square Laser Dermatology in Manhattan. “A series of treatments is necessary, but the effects are gradual and require minimal recovery time—maybe a few days of redness and swelling post-procedure, but easily covered by tinted sunscreen or makeup.” The device is both versatile and customizable, with the ability to go through every layer of skin to promote new collagen formation and skin rejuvenation. The advantage of Fraxel over other laser skin procedures and treatments is that you are not breaking the skin. “Since the laser only treats a fraction of tissue at a time, it leaves the surrounding tissue intact, which promotes rapid healing and reverses sun damage,” says Dr. Chapas. There are two types of the device: the more aggressive Fraxel Repair, which can produce noticeable results in just one treatment but requires more downtime, and the milder Fraxel Dual.

Between two and six treatments are recommended to achieve optimal results, with annual follow-ups. “Patients may experience redness or swelling after the procedure that diminishes over the next several days,” says Dr. Chapas. “Skin may appear to be bronzed or show little dark dots on the treated area, which may feel dry, peel or flake. Skin may also have a sandpaper texture for a few days after treatment.” The procedure itself isn’t very painful: “Some patients describe the sensation as burning and will feel a tingly sensation during the treatment itself,” says Manhattan dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum. “However, most patients numb for about 45 minutes prior, minimizing any discomfort. Patients should avoid the sun for up to seven days while the skin is peeling.”

“Don’t get treated with Fraxel if you have extensive breakouts, open wounds or infections on the face, are predisposed to keloid formation or excessive scarring or have experienced pigmentation changes following surgery or are on systemic steroids,” explains Dr. Chapas. “For patients with deeper skin tones, it is important to discuss treatments with a board-certified dermatologist with experience in treating skin of color,” says Dr. Nussbaum. “People with darker skin tones should avoid traditional ablative lasers like Fraxel Repair because there is a risk of hyperpigmentation.”

With most people working from home, now is a perfect time to sign up for this results-driven procedure. “Fraxel is a trusted, gold-standard treatment that has been proven to be safe and effective at addressing some of the most noticeable signs of aging,” says Dr. Chapas. “It’s a go-to treatment for many, including some of the biggest celebrities, because it produces noticeable results without extensive downtime.” Dr. Nussbaum agrees: “My patients love Fraxel because it provides real results for some of their biggest skincare concerns and helps them to achieve a more youthful appearance without surgery.”

For an aesthetic facial treatment that doesn’t require any downtime, DiamondGlow is a new dermabrasion device with a crushed diamond tip that gently removes the top layer of skin and delivers topical serums onto the skin. As Chrissy Teigen, who experienced it at the office of Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Jason Diamond, said: “It’s sucking out all the grossness. I can feel it pulling it out.” At New York City’s Shafer Clinic, run by plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer, aesthetician Edyta Jarosz is wielding the device to deliver healthier, smoother, clearer skin with unclogged pores and a more even tone. “The three-in-one noninvasive facial treatment uses 3X1 technology to simultaneously exfoliate the skin, extract impurities and infuse skin with professional-grade SkinMedica Pro-Infusion Serums tailored to address different skin concerns all at once,” says Jarosz. “One of the best things about DiamondGlow is that you can safely treat delicate skin around the eye area and lips, where skin is prone to wrinkles and volume loss.”

The 30-minute treatment also promises an improved appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dryness, dark spots and discoloration and overall dull skin thanks to different tip variations. “Allergan Aesthetics is committed to offering a full range of skincare solutions for customers to improve skin quality in-office and at home,” says Allergan vice president of marketing Colleen McKenna. “DiamondGlow brings the facial experience to the next level with the use of customizable patented real diamond tips to resurface skin and infuse open pores with potent serums. Just one DiamondGlow treatment enhances clarity and luminosity, with continued improvement after each session.” The closed-loop vacuum system is also highly customizable, and each of the device’s six diamond tips is specifically designed for maximum efficacy and exfoliation for specific skin concerns, say, large pores, age spots or acne. It’s been proven to volumize skin by 7 percent, improve radiance, visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles, stimulate healthy cell renewal and give a lasting youthful boost. After the treatment, skin is smoothed, plumped, hydrated and healthy. Treatments are recommended every one to two weeks, and a provider, like Jarosz, can suggest a regimen that’s right for you.

Give Your Scalp a Little Extra Attention https://dujour.com/beauty/scalp-treatments-hair-products/ Mon, 07 Jun 2021 13:00:39 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=115819 The hair on our heads is just about the only thing not covered by a face mask these days. Here’s how to protect the skin on your head and keep your tresses shining

The post Give Your Scalp a Little Extra Attention appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
We often forget that scalp is skin. We can’t see it, but indeed it is just as important as the skin on our faces and bodies. Now, skincare-grade ingredients are finally being added to haircare products.

“Seasonal changes can always affect our skin, and the sweat, humidity and heat that summer brings with it can create a moist, warm environment on your scalp in which microbes, the bacteria that causes dandruff and irritation, thrive,” says Dr. Barbara Sturm. It’s important to note the positive effects a healthy scalp can have on hair’s strength, texture and appearance. “Hair that’s grown from an unhealthy scalp shows signs of roughness or breakage and in some cases, shine reduction, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis.”

Months spent swimming in a chlorinated pool or in salty ocean water can be harsh on the hair and scalp, so your scalp needs more TLC. “Fall is a good time to reset and develop a consistent haircare routine to repair the damage to our tresses and encourage stronger hair growth,” says Fable & Mane’s co-founder, Akash Mehta, a vegan, plant-based hair wellness line inspired by ancient Indian beauty secrets. The brand’s products feature ingredients like centella asiatica and adaptogenic ashwagandha to help the scalp microbiome adapt to changes in environment, internal hormonal changes and stress. Exfoliating the scalp is crucial to removing buildup and toxins from color treatments and styling products. “A balanced scalp microbiome is key for healthy hair,” says the brand’s other co-founder Nikita Mehta. Using products with silicone also causes damage to hair, so exfoliating the scalp should be done weekly to reboot the scalp. “Talking about the scalp wasn’t a sexy subject before but now people are much more open to discussing the details,” says Helen Reavey, a trichologist and founder of hair and scalp care brand Act+Acre. “Now scalp care is part of the conversation.” Act+Acre’s products, like its Scalp Renew, Scalp Detox and Stem Cell Serum, treat the scalp like your skin cleansing and exfoliating while leaving all the good bacteria.

Robbie Salter co-created Jupiter, a line of shampoos, conditioners and repair products to address dandruff and dry scalp. “While the summer has its share of scalp damaging moments, the winter is often your scalp’s worst enemy,” Salter explains. “We tend to go longer in between washes, wear hats to stave off the cold or hide a little greasy buildup—each creating a breeding ground for oil and fungal buildup. Look to gentle formulations with medicated ingredients to not only target those issues at the source, but to establish the strongest foundation for healthy hair growth.” Jupiter is the only salon-quality dual system scalp repair company to offer both a line for those treating dandruff and, with the launch of its new dry scalp focus system, dry scalp.

After achieving success with her skincare line Drunk Elephant, it was only a matter of time before the brand’s founder and CEO, Tiffany Masterson, tackled the scalp with a new line of fragrance- and sulfate-free shampoo, conditioner and styling products. “You can’t have good hair without a healthy scalp,” says Masterson, whose son and husband both struggle with long-term scalp issues. “It’s super important to exfoliate weekly to have a clean and healthy scalp.” Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub has both physical (plant cellulose beads) and chemical exfoliation in the form of AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic or lactic acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy acid, like salicylic acid). “Traditionally, haircare products have contained all sorts of ingredients, like silicones, that could disrupt the health of the scalp and cause buildup,” Masterson explains. “Our biocompatible line focuses on healthy pH levels, formulations the skin recognizes, small molecular structure that’s easily absorbed and effective active ingredients.”

“Your diet is also so important because your hair needs certain vitamins and minerals to be healthy and if the hair doesn’t have them at the birth stage it can weaken the hair,” says Reavey. “Your hair is the last to get nutrients, so you need to have a healthy surplus of vitamins and minerals in your body.” Act+Acre’s new Plant Based Hair Capsules help provide all the nutrients your hair needs outside of your diet.

Entrepreneur Nancy Twine founded plant-powered, vegan haircare line Briogeo to fix damaged locks. “I can see how the scalp can be overlooked—traditionally, we are accustomed to cleansing and conditioning just our hair,” says Twine. “This is why I created Briogeo’s Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo. It is formulated with plant-based exfoliators that gently remove buildup from the scalp and coconut oil that moisturizes to help prevent a dry, flaky scalp.” She also recommends using a scalp exfoliator once or twice a week like her Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment, which is included in the brand’s Scalp Revival product set and features detoxifying Binchotan charcoal that draws out impurities from the scalp. “This formulation contains a cooling blend of tea tree, peppermint and spearmint oils that help reduce itchiness, irritation and inflammation,” she says.

Skincare Trend: Alternative Retinol Products https://dujour.com/beauty/alternative-retinol-skincare-products/ Tue, 13 Apr 2021 17:00:57 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=119318 For years, retinol has been the holy grail for smoothing wrinkles and fading spots. With new ingredients promising to achieve the same results, can even the most sensitive skin types benefit?

The post Skincare Trend: Alternative Retinol Products appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Retinol, or vitamin A derivatives, has long been the only game in town for revealing smoother, wrinkle-free skin. However, one thing is for sure: For some skin types, retinol can negatively affect the dermis and disrupt the acid mantle if a person has damage or weakness already. “For many years, retinol has been touted as the gold standard when it comes to anti-aging due to its ability to increase cell turnover and stimulate collagen production,” explains Emily Parr, founder of skincare brand HoliFrog. “While it’s a major workhorse, it can also be tough to tolerate for those with super sensitive skin, rosacea or eczema.” For many with sensitive and reactive skin types (like this writer), retinol can cause inflammation and further sensitivity.

Recently, plant-derived alternatives like bakuchiol and moth bean extract have come on the scene, offering the ability to stimulate skin cell turnover at a rate that was formerly only afforded by retinol. “Bakuchiol activates many of the same genes and has many overlapping effects as vitamin A derivatives, but is much less irritating,” explains New York City dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman. “It’s also safe during pregnancy and nursing, where retinols and retinoids are not.” Dr. Engelman is a fan of these new actives in formulations including Indeed Labs Bakuchiol Reface Pads, ISDIN Melatonik Overnight Recovery Serum and Ambari Beauty PM Active12 Serum.

These plant-based ingredients (bakuchiol comes from the seeds and leaves of the babchi plant, and moth bean is extracted from a legume) offer the benefits of retinol without the unwanted side effects of dryness and irritation. “Ingredients like bakuchiol and moth bean are poised perfectly, as they address both anti-aging needs as well as sensitivity issues,” explains Parr, whose HoliFrog Halo AHA + BHA Evening Serum uses moth bean extract. “With the plant-based retinol alternatives, there is no concern in using products with either ingredient daily. Both are shown to both restore the skin, improve elasticity and diminish wrinkles.”

These alternative retinol simulators are also more stable than most forms of retinoids while doing the job of reducing hyperpigmentation and blemishes as well as improving the appearance of fine lines and pore size. They can also improve skin elasticity, firmness and radiance and offer a significant reduction in roughness and dryness. “I think anything plant-based that can be an alternative to something synthetic or medical-grade is always alluring to consumers,” says New York City aesthetician Sofie Pavitt. “The main concern with retinols is that, along with encouraging cell turnover, they come with a lot of irritation, and bakuchiol doesn’t seem to give this reaction in the same way.” However, she cautions that just because something is touted as a gentler ingredient, it doesn’t always make it so. “As with anything with active ingredients, anyone with sensitive skin should gently introduce a product into their routine, and one at a time, to make sure you do not get irritated.”

A Day In The Life: Adir Abergel https://dujour.com/beauty/a-day-in-the-life-hairstylist-adir-abergel/ Tue, 06 Apr 2021 18:00:15 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=119188 The hairstylist and haircare entrepreneur takes us through a jam-packed day in his shoes

The post A Day In The Life: Adir Abergel appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
The Israeli-born hairstylist Adir Abergel has, for the last 25 years, been go, go, go, spending most of his time on airplanes and prepping clients for magazine shoots and red carpet appearances. As with everything else, the last year has changed all that. Abergel, who calls Los Angeles’ Ladera Heights home, has used the time to focus on creating haircare products that work and that his clients love to use. Abergel got his start at age 15 assisting the legendary stylist Arthur Johns at his salon before freelancing in the music video industry and then moving on to celebrity and editorial. As Johns’ apprentice, Abergel had the opportunity to work with clients like Nancy Reagan, Betsy Bloomingdale, Tina Turner and Julie Christie.

Recently, Adir Abergel was named creative director for haircare brand Virtue. “After years of being in the industry and helping build so many other brands, this partnership was really inclusive,” says Abergel. “Innovation and technology in a haircare brand is something I have been searching for my entire career. The products work and I believe in them.” The brand offers shampoos, conditioners, treatments and styling products that feature Virtue’s trademark Alpha Keratin 60ku ingredient. “The keratin in Virtue is like a GPS system that goes into the hair and finds the damage and repairs it,” explains Abergel.

The stylist has worked with many of his celebrity clients for decades. Actors like Jennifer Garner, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, Anne Hathaway, and Kristen Stewart are devotees of Abergel’s styling. “I don’t homogenize any of my clients but focus on their individuality,” he explains. “Hair is a medium that allows us the freedom to evolve. Throughout history, it has given us our greatest source of individuality.”

Here’s how Adir Abergel spends a typical day.

7:00 a.m. Wake up and take a quick grateful meditation. When I say meditation, I mean literally 30 seconds of taking a moment to acknowledge that I am alive.

7:30 a.m. I have a tall glass of room temperature water and then make coffee. I love Intelligentsia coffee beans, which I make in my Jura coffee machine. I like it black.

8:00 a.m. I look at my texts and emails. I like to answer anything urgent, especially if it has come in from Virtue’s CEO, Melisse Shaban.

9:00 a.m. Leave the house to get my workout in. During COVID-19, I have been committed to more self-care. I work out with a friend. We either train in his garage that he transformed into a gym or we go to the park.

11:00 a.m. Arrive at the Hair Factory, which I converted from my three-car garage into a studio where my team and I work. It’s decorated with furniture that I bought from Lena Horne’s personal collection. I have full walls of hair extensions, wigs, built-in closets filled with fabric, textiles and an assortment of thousands of hair accessories. We have a quick meeting and I direct my team on any wigs or extensions we need prepped. Then I check in with my agent and review my schedule.

11:30 a.m. Zoom meeting with Virtue’s product development team to discuss product launches slated for 2022. Innovation is a big part of my role at Virtue. I am constantly thinking about how to make hair healthier with our star ingredient Alpha Keratin 60ku. Afterward, I have a Zoom meeting with our creative agency to discuss the upcoming campaign.

12:30 p.m. I have roasted vegetables with a protein for lunch. There’s a great restaurant down the street from me that does the best Southern cooking called Swift Café. I usually get shrimp and grits with collard greens. When I want to be fancy, I order sushi from Katsuya. I’m an intermittent faster—my friend and client Gwyneth Paltrow would be very proud of me.

1:00 p.m. Zoom meeting with a longtime client to discuss her upcoming film project. I presented inspirational mood boards and hair color options that we sent to the director to help build her character.

2:00 p.m. I am in the middle of construction right now on my home, so I have a quick touch base with my designer, Janice Barta of Barta Interiors, and Brian Tarr from BTC Builders. Afterward, I walk around my block to clear my mind.

4:00 p.m. House call with my bestie and longtime client Jennifer Garner. We just gave her a new cut and we brainstorm on some upcoming social content for Virtue.

5:00 p.m. I stop at this amazing Japanese market in Santa Monica called Mitsuwa for fish and vegetables. I love to support my local businesses.

6:00 p.m. Unwind with my husband [Marcelo Freire] at home.

7:00 p.m. My husband and I cook dinner. He’s a Harvard professor and scientist in the Genomic Medicine and Infectious Disease Department at the J. Craig Venter Institute in La Jolla. He focuses on the immune system and identifies ways to improve our ability to heal. Over dinner, we talk a lot about what’s happening in the world and especially in the fight against COVID-19.

8:00 p.m. We watch an episode or two of Schitt’s Creek before bed. We are obsessed and are watching it for the second time.

10:00 p.m. I get ready for bed: wash my face, moisturize, brush my teeth and floss. Then I situate our dog DuDu, who is 17, and turn on my alarm for the next day.

Miami-based CBD-focused lifestyle brand Botanika Life strives to redefine the standard for luxury products by supporting sustainability, reducing environmental impact and excluding any ingredients that use animal testing. Its expertly curated selection of high-end, clean CBD wellness and beauty products include topicals for pain relief, a sleep and immune boost spray duo, bath soaks and skin elixirs. Husband-and-wife founders Benny and Stacey Shabtai were inspired to create an eco-friendly, all-natural brand after Stacey, a model and nutritionist, turned Benny on to CBD. “I’ve used products in the past that have worked but come to find out they included harsh chemicals, metals and preservatives,” says Stacey Shabtai. “I think it’s absolutely imperative to pay attention to what you put on your body, not just what you ingest.”

Botanika Life is dedicated to creating results-driven products across beauty, relief, wellness and hair categories with its ever-expanding roster of functional products, which are supported with third-party lab testing and backed by accredited clinical trials. “Transparency is key for us,” says Shabtai. “The whole concept of the Botanika lifestyle is that our line helps you elevate from wherever you are.” So, where is the jet-setting wellness entrepreneur headed next? “This spring, we’re staying in the United States and spending time in Aspen and Vail.”

The Resurfacing Laser Treatment You Didn’t Know You Needed https://dujour.com/beauty/the-resurfacing-laser-treatment-you-didnt-know-you-needed/ Mon, 22 Mar 2021 15:00:41 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=118984 Your skin can be reborn thanks to a laser known as Fraxel. Top dermatologists share the pros and cons of this procedure

The post The Resurfacing Laser Treatment You Didn’t Know You Needed appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Restore the glow this spring with skin resurfacing procedures like the Fraxel laser. to brighten the skin and smooth texture. Fraxel is an ablative fractional laser treatment, which means it only targets a fraction of the skin at a time. It’s ideal for treating sun damage on the face, neck and chest as well as acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, and melasma. “This laser will help with skin texture, firmness, elasticity and pore-size appearance,” says Dr. Anne Chapas, founder and medical director of Union Square Laser Dermatology in Manhattan. “A series of treatments is necessary, but the effects are gradual and require minimal recovery time—maybe a few days of redness and swelling post-procedure but can easily be covered by tinted sunscreen or makeup.” The device is both versatile and customizable, with the ability to go through every layer of skin to promote new collagen formation and skin rejuvenation. The advantage of Fraxel over other laser skin procedures and treatments is that you are not breaking the skin. “Since the laser only treats a fraction of tissue at a time, it leaves the surrounding tissue intact which promotes rapid healing and reverse sun damage,” says Dr. Chapas. There are two types of the device: the more aggressive Fraxel Repair, which can produce noticeable results in just one treatment, but requires more downtime and the milder Fraxel Dual.

Between two and six treatments to achieve optimal results and then annual follow-up treatments. “Patients may experience redness or swelling after the procedure that diminishes over the next several days,” says Dr. Chapas. “Skin may appear to be bronzed or show little dark dots on the treated area, which may feel dry, peel or flake and skin may have a sandpaper texture for a few days after treatment.” The procedure itself isn’t very painful. “Some patients describe the sensation as burning and will feel a tingly sensation during the treatment itself,” says Manhattan dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum. “However, most patients numb for about 45 minutes prior therefore minimizing any discomfort. Patients should avoid the sun for up to seven days while the skin is peeling.” Results can be seen after one treatment, however a series of treatments is usually recommended.

And you don’t have to sell actress and author, Jenny Mollen, on the treatment. She swears by it. So who’s not a candidate for this treatment? “Don’t get treated with Fraxel if you have extensive breakouts, open wounds, or infections on the face, are predisposed to keloid formation or excessive scarring or have experienced pigmentation changes following surgery or are on systemic steroids,” explains Dr. Chapas. “For patients with deeper skin tones, it is important to discuss treatments with their board-certified dermatologist with experience in treating skin of color,” says Dr. Nussbaum. “People with darker skin tones should avoid traditional ablative lasers like Fraxel Repair because there is a risk for hyperpigmentation.”

Nussbaum is in agreement. “My patients love Fraxel because it provides real results for some of their biggest skincare concerns and helps them to achieve a more youthful appearance without surgery.” With most people working-from-home, now is a perfect time to sign up for this results-driven procedure.

Pritika Swarup is Launching an Indian-Inspired Beauty Brand https://dujour.com/beauty/pritika-swarup-is-launching-an-indian-inspired-beauty-brand-prakti/ Tue, 16 Mar 2021 15:00:55 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=118932 The supermodel is gearing up to debut her inclusive skincare and beauty line, Prakti

The post Pritika Swarup is Launching an Indian-Inspired Beauty Brand appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
With a glowing resume that includes modeling for some seriously coveted brands like MAC Cosmetics and Fenty Beauty, it makes sense that supermodel Pritika Swarup knows how to keep her skin glowing. Swarup has rightfully earned many impressive magazine covers and features (including DuJour!) because of her natural beauty, but it is her list of other accolades that truly set her apart. Currently a student at Columbia University, the 24-year-old Virginia Beach native founded Praetorian Management LLC, a secondary market investment fund, worked as an Investment Analyst at NYC-based investment firm New Legacy, and most recently, has been working on launching her own beauty and skincare line called Prakti.

Inspired by her Indian roots and experience in the modeling world, Swarup created Prakti to bring Indian beauty to the forefront of the industry and directly into the hands of her own generation. “I always felt the absence of my culture in mainstream media and the beauty industry growing up, and especially when I started working in fashion at the age of 17,” she says. “It was then that I realized how much Indian beauty and holistic wellness were significantly underrepresented in the market. The clear lack of inclusivity and true representation of global beauty, not only Indian beauty practices, but the beauty of Indian women and all women, disturbed me to my very core.”

Swarup admits that her own challenging experiences working with different makeup artists in the past have really reinforced her belief that beauty comes from the inside and that makeup should amplify that. “I’m Indian, which means I have a combination of olive and yellow undertones. Cosmetic brands hadn’t created a foundation that fit my skin tone until much later in my career,” she says. “Even two years ago, I was shooting a campaign for a major brand, and they used a foundation that was at least four shades darker than my skin tone. I looked in the mirror and didn’t even recognize myself.”

Although skincare has always been a top priority for Swarup, she has grown to love the playfulness of makeup and how it can be used in so many ways. “I love that makeup can change your whole look and attitude and completely transform a mood during a photoshoot. I live for becoming a character on set and embodying a role for the day. Makeup allows you to express yourself to an even greater extent than just words.”

By fusing the cultural richness and spirituality of India with the modern technologies of the West, Prakti aims to bridge the gap between the two worlds and empower all women to embrace their beauty. “The ultimate goal is to pull the curtain back on modern India to reveal the holistic beauty and rituals of the East, and at the same time, inspire young women everywhere to pursue multi-dimensional, fulfilling lives, fearlessly,” Swarup says.

Below, Swarup tells us more about what we can expect from her new all-inclusive, Indian-inspired skincare line.

Pritika Swarup

Pritika Swarup

Tell me about the brand’s name, Prakti!

Prakti is a fusion of two words that seamlessly express the ethos of the brand–Pritika means loved one, and Shakti is the Hindi word for female power/energy. Shakti aligns with our brand’s purpose to inspire women to pursue multidimensional, fulfilling lives. I’ve built this brand to go beyond the beauty space as a tool to empower women and connect in a meaningful way.

Any must-have products from Prakti you already can’t live without?

I’m super obsessed with all of the products in our first lineup. PritiPolish – Instant Glow Exfoliator is insane! I use it every day and it leaves my skin feeling SO soft and glowing, like never before. It’s a physical and enzymatic exfoliating experience that really gets the job done. The product has a few unexpected amazing surprises while in use, so stay tuned for that!

How do you think makeup and skincare should work together in someone’s routine?

I believe taking care of your skin is most important, and makeup should be used to amplify your natural beauty. More skincare and less makeup.

What is your top skincare tip for someone struggling to find their routine or isn’t sure where to start?

Don’t use too many products. Identify your type of skin and specific needs and then keep it very simple. I stick with the basics, or what I call, the four P’s: purify, protect, pamper, and polish. I’ve integrated these pillars into the foundation of Prakti as well.

Amanda Seyfried Embodies Old Hollywood Glamour https://dujour.com/beauty/amanda-seyfried-lancome-critics-choice-awards/ Mon, 08 Mar 2021 17:25:50 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=118899 The Mank actress dazzled in Lancôme at the 2021 Critics Choice Awards

The post Amanda Seyfried Embodies Old Hollywood Glamour appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Ahead of the 2021 Critics Choice Awards, actress Amanda Seyfried had a virtual appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon featuring an impromptu cameo by a maintenance crew. As Seyfried quickly explained that her drier is broken, viewers caught the repair men walking behind her. We can all relate to being interrupted during a work Zoom call–perhaps not always on late night television.

Two days later, Seyfried donned a sheer Miu Miu tuxedo-style top embellished with dazzling sequins with Miu Miu black cigarette pants for the 2021 Critics Choice Awards. Seyfried was nominated for best supporting actress for her role as Hollywood starlet Marion Davies in Mank. The film, also starring Gary Oldman and Lily Collins, tells the story of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and the screenplay for Citizen Kane.

Drawing inspiration from old Hollywood glamour, celebrity makeup artist Genevieve Herr worked with Lancôme ambassadress Amanda Seyfried to create her gorgeous makeup look for the award show. “My inspiration for Amanda’s makeup was a modern take on Cabaret. A kind of vintage, movie star glamour with a shout out to today’s trends. A smokey eye, but more subtle, and a saturated red lip with a dash of pink,” Herr says. See below for the complete beauty breakdown.

SKIN:

Herr used Lancôme NEW Clarifique Face Essence the night prior and morning-of on Amanda Seyfried for extra hydration, radiance and smooth skin texture on her face and neck. Herr then applied Lancôme Prep & Hydrate Primer all over Seyfried’s face, which is an important step to hydrate and prepare the skin for foundation application.

FACE:

Herr applied Lancôme Teint Miracle Radiant Foundation with a damp sponge and used a lighter shade of the Lancôme New Teint Idôle Ultra Makeup Stick as concealer where needed. Herr shaded and contoured Seyfried’s cheekbones, jawline and nose with a darker shade of Lancôme New Teint Idôle Ultra Makeup Stick and blended with the built-in kabuki brush. To highlight the cheekbones, she applied Lancôme Dual Finish Highlighter in Luminous Gold on the high-points of the face where the light would naturally hit for an all over glow. Herr used a touch of Lancôme Blush Subtil in Cedar Rose on her fingers and blended it on the apples of the cheeks for a hint of color.

EYES:

Herr lined Seyfried’s upper lash line with Lancôme Le Stylo Eyeliner in Noir, taking it from the inner corner to the outer edge, softening the line to create a subtle smoky effect. To set the line, she used the black shade from the Lancôme Hypnôse 5-Color Eyeshadow Palette in Smokey Chic and blended it across the lash line. On the lids, she added the silver shade from the palette and then highlighted the inner corner with the lighter silver shade from the same palette.

Herr curled Seyfried’s lashes and applied two generous coats of Lancôme Lash Idôle Mascara. To define her brows, Herr used Lancôme Brow Define Pencil in Dark Blonde.

LIPS:

To finish the look, Herr lined Seyfried’s lips with Lancôme Le Lip Liner in Rose Lancôme and applied Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge Intimatte in Rose Lancôme for a pop of pink.

Get Personal With Holistic Pioneer and Innovator Dr. Richard Firshein https://dujour.com/beauty/dr-richard-firshein-launches-holistic-personalized-supplements/ Wed, 27 Jan 2021 16:00:34 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=117949 Dr. Richard Firshein launched a new line of personalized supplements and powders based on your personal health history

The post Get Personal With Holistic Pioneer and Innovator Dr. Richard Firshein appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
New York City integrative medicine specialist Dr. Richard Firshein has been practicing precision-based medicine for decades, in which everything—from testing to long-term longevity plans—is customized. At his namesake practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the Firshein Center, Dr. Firshein offers a 360-degree approach to personalized health care by looking at a patient’s gut biome, DNA, nutritional vitamin levels, hormones, allergies and toxins they may have been exposed to.

An early pioneer in the field of integrative and functional medicine, Dr. Firshein has penned two books on the topic (Nutraceutical Revolution and The Vitamin Prescription (for Life)) and treated patients like U2’s Larry Mullen Jr. and Susan Rockefeller. “I was always a believer in natural approaches to health care,” says Dr. Firshein. “We simply prescribe too many medications and perhaps now too many supplements for our own good.” Since no two patients are the same, Dr. Firshein’s goal is to use his unique system of healing to prescribe the right cocktail of supplements to maximize each individual’s optimal health. To that end, Precise Elements by Dr. Firshein was born. “You are the only person that matters when it comes to your health,” he explains. “And, for me, this is the holy grail of supplementation: one pill that’s customized to your unique needs.” For those who don’t like swallowing pills, you can even get the formula in powder form instead.

Precise Elements by Dr. Firshein supplements for whatever ails you

Precise Elements by Dr. Firshein supplements for whatever ails you

Dr. Firshein cites many issues with the way we currently take supplements. “Let’s start with one-size-fits-all multivitamins,” he says. “They may be providing some benefit, but they often have so many ingredients that overlap that it’s both wasteful and potentially harmful—even creating adverse effects, including increased risks for cancer.” For example, a 35-year-old man with asthma needs a different supplement than a 70-year-old woman with diabetes. “That seems obvious, but no one has been able to address that yet,” he explains. “In many cases, I’m incorporating metabolic, nutritional and DNA testing into these formulations, creating the most precise nutritional supplement formulation possible with no filler.”

Dr. Firshein’s goal is to consolidate all of the supplements a patient might need into fewer than five pills daily that are tailored to your needs and packaged in a sustainable, refillable bottle. “A color-coding system on our bottles gives consumers a quick glimpse of what their supplements are being used for, too,” says Dr. Firshein. “So, for example, a bottle with a green stripe on the label will help consumers know that this is for supporting heart and lung health.” For now, this unique service is offered exclusively through consultation via an in-person or telemedicine appointment at the Firshein Center. “As you consider each person’s family history, genetic predispositions, allergies, deficiencies and medications, you start to get a much different picture in terms of need and ultimately the ability to create a specialized supplement regimen that’s right for them.”

New Hair Trends From 3 Celebrity Hair Stylists https://dujour.com/beauty/new-hair-trends-from-dyson-celebrity-hair-stylists/ Tue, 26 Jan 2021 17:30:32 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=118198 Hair experts Jen Atkin, Jawara Wauchope, and Matthew Collins share their hair trends and tricks for 2021

The post New Hair Trends From 3 Celebrity Hair Stylists appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
With health and safety at the top of everyone’s list of priorities and more time spent at home, self-care is finally getting the attention it deserves in 2021. Part of staying healthy and safe is taking care of yourself in whatever ways that make you feel good. Maybe you’ve started taking daily supplements or you’ve finally made the time to organize your disastrous closet or you’ve treated yourself to a splurge item that will inevitably make your life a whole lot easier. If you’re a beauty and hair junkie you’ve probably seen the tutorials using the Dyson Airwrap Styler and been intrigued. It looks like magic. So, we spoke to a few hair experts about what hair trends to expect in 2021 and how we can make our lives easier with a few hair tricks and tips using Dyson devices. It is important to note that just because the Dyson Airwrap Styler looks awesome in action on TikTok, doesn’t mean it is really the best device for you and your hair needs. But, fear not, there are plenty of options.

The Dyson Airwrap Styler device itself is sleek, so simple to use, and the leather storage case makes me feel like I’m a celebrity hair stylist in my own bathroom. The Complete Styler includes two 1.2 inch barrels, two 1.6 inch barrels, a firm smoothing brush, a soft smoothing brush, a round volumizing brush, and a pre-styling dryer so you can give your hair a quick dry without needing to pull out another device. The soft smoothing brush is ideal for a quick, smooth look with minimal effort. The accessories can be switched out in seconds so you can smooth your hair and add in a few loose curls in no time at all. Jawara Wauchope says he loves the versatility of the styler and that it allows people to switch up their style depending on how they’re feeling each day. He adds that 2021 will be the year to showcase your creativity through your hair. “The Firm Smoothing Brush can be used to stretch out curls and waves, while the barrels and round brushes can be used to frame the face. In fact, hair can form a part of the new wardrobe essential.”

If the Complete Styler feels like overkill for you and you have curly hair, celebrity hairstylist and haircare entrepreneur Jen Atkin suggests the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer with Diffuser. The diffuser attachment will help define curls and waves by dispersing air around the hair more evenly. You’ll love your perfectly imperfect curls for 2021. “My must-have hair product to use with my Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is the L’Oréal Professional Densité thickening primer. It’s a light spray that helps plump the hair by giving it a bit of grit for pre-blow dry so your looks hold much longer,” celebrity hair stylist Matthew Collins adds.

For the most minimalist hair goddess, Collins recommends the Dyson Corrale straightener for creating sleek, trendy looks quickly. “Throw your hair up into a quick bun on top and leave a small piece on either side of your part out. Then use your Dyson Corrale or Airwrap to quickly give those pieces a soft curl. Now, you’ll have what everyone else sees as a casual updo, but you did it in two minutes,” Collins says of his go-to hair look when you have no time whatsoever. Collins adds that for an impromptu video call, a casual updo is the ideal hair style to execute but, for he is predicting that ’90s space buns will be one of the biggest hair trends of 2021. Think back to Britney Spears circa 1999, the Spice Girls, and most recently beauty icon Jennifer Lopez herself gave space buns a resurgence courtesy of hairstylist Chris Appleton.

A post shared by Chris Appleton (@chrisappleton1)

Collins suggests that hair trends for 2021 will encourage people to be a little braver, bolder, and more experimental with their looks. Space buns can be achieved by parting the hair into a perfect center part before straightening with the Dyson Corrale straightener. Use a pin tail comb to help achieve the precise line of the center parting. Next, gather the hair into pigtails on either side of the head, leaving out small sections to frame the face, whilst combing the gathered hair to neaten any bunching or flyaways. Twist each pigtail around the base of the pigtail to achieve a bun on either side of the head. Fix in place with elastics and pins. Finally, straighten the front sections with the Dyson Corrale straightener, bending towards the face, for the perfect space buns.

While Collins predicts there will be some more adventurous hair trends this year, there is one trend he is ready to cut loose in 2021: the over-use of extensions. “For the most part, I love extensions for fullness or to add to a look, but they shouldn’t be the look. Embrace the hair you have and work with it, not against it,” he explains. Jen Atkin agrees adding that she predicts one of the top hair trends for 2021 will be the, “‘I woke up like this’ look–an effortless, natural, organic style with loose, unstructured movement.”

From embracing your natural curls (and allowing them to shine with the right diffuser) to getting a little playful with some nostalgic space buns, 2021 will be sure to bring us a slew of new hair trends to experiment with.

Lisa Parigi Offers Powerful Beauty Products For an Effortless Glow https://dujour.com/beauty/lisa-parigi-glow-up-beauty-interview/ Thu, 14 Jan 2021 17:00:55 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=117954 Skincare brand Glow Up Beauty will inspire you to do some serious self-care

Having grown up in Switzerland and traveled Europe as a model for many years, Lisa Parigi knows the beauty and fashion industries intimately. After pursuing a professional career as an executive for several different Fortune 500 software and information technology companies, the longtime girlfriend of Lionel Richie launched her digital lifestyle brand Dream.Design.Discover to offer tips and inspiration for entertaining and chic home décor. Around the same time, she developed a line of luxury candles. With fragrances inspired by her favorite destinations, including St. Tropez, the Swiss Alps, Manhattan and Beverly Hills, these hand-poured candles are accented with 24-karat gold. “I always carry the candles with me when I travel to have the scent of something familiar,” she says.

Parigi launched vegan, sulfate-free and paraben-free product line Glow Up Beauty to corner the skincare and self-care market. “I poured my love into producing natural and effective products for anyone who is looking to better their routine but may not have the most time to focus on it,” she says. The Glow Up Kimono Fragrance Oil was created in an effort to offer beloved scents in a portable manner for blissful aromatherapy. It can be worn every day and is made with calming essential oils such as lavender, bergamot and safflower.

Next, Parigi unveiled her Collagen Eye Mask and Portable Facial Mister. “I wanted to create products that were not only easy to put in your bag, but were fun to wear, take pictures of and post,” she says. “Why not make something that is not only good for you but you could have fun with?” Parigi admits that Richie and his family have been extremely supportive. “I must tell you, it took Lionel a moment to get used to the pink color of the eye mask, but after seeing the results, he’s a believer! Sofia [Richie] loves and uses them, too.”

Why You Should Use The Newest Paula’s Choice Exfoliant https://dujour.com/beauty/why-should-you-use-the-new-paulas-choice-exfoliant/ Wed, 06 Jan 2021 17:30:23 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=117866 The skincare brand's founder shares how to use the Skin Perfecting 25% AHA and 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel and why your skin will love it

The post Why You Should Use The Newest Paula’s Choice Exfoliant appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Adding a new skincare product into your routine can pose many questions, uncertainties and doubt. Will my skin freak out? Will the product actually work? Am I doing this right? Whether you have sensitive skin or super normal skin, it is important to know what a product is actually meant to do and how to use it to effectively in order to get real results. Some products such as facial oils and serums are very approachable–even for the skincare novice–featuring familiar ingredients like rosehip oil, argan oil, vitamin E, and nourishing household ingredients like honey. Other skincare products such as retinols and exfoliants can be slightly more intimidating and potentially send you into a black hole Googling whether or not you should really be putting acid on your face. The truth is, when you exfoliate using the proper product the right way, you can dramatically improve your skin’s texture, tone, and health.

We turned to skincare expert and founder of Paula’s Choice, Paula Begoun, to learn more about exfoliating and how to use the Skin Perfecting 25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel, the newest launch from Paula’s Choice that was originally a limited-edition product but has since become a permanent part of the brand’s roster of skincare offerings. See below for your complete guide to exfoliating.

Why is an exfoliant helpful to include in a skincare routine?

Most everyone needs to help their skin exfoliate because over time, due to unprotected sun exposure, pollution, age, and some skin disorders, skin can no longer exfoliate (shed dead skin cells) as it once did naturally when we were young. When skin can’t exfoliate on its own anymore, it causes a thick build-up of dead layers of skin that can result in clogged pores, breakouts, having dry or combination skin, making skin look and feel rough and dull, and impeding skin’s ability to heal and repair itself. The right kind of exfoliant can save the day.

What is the best way to exfoliate?

Many people think exfoliating skin is all about using harsh scrubs or cleansing brushes. It turns out that both are terrible options for exfoliation because they are limited in their reach and can damage skin by causing micro tears in the surface. Even the best scrubs and cleansing brushes (meaning they are gentle and don’t tear the skin) can clean only the very surface of the skin. Cleansing isn’t the same as exfoliating. Healthy skin cell turnover takes place in the lower layers of skin beyond the surface and for the skin to behave in a healthy manner, those are the layers that need help where scrubs and cleansing brushes can go.

What can reach those built-up layers without disturbing or tearing the surface of the skin or causing irritation are well-formulated AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids, including glycolic acid and lactic acid) and BHA (beta hydroxy acid, which is only salicylic acid) leave-on exfoliants. AHAs and BHA not only gently exfoliate the skin, but also increase hydration (yes, leave-on exfoliants are brilliant at increasing hydration), as well as reinforce, strengthen, and soften skin. They improve signs of aging, uneven skin tone, dullness, and breakouts (it is amazing for acne); dramatically reduce clogged pores and pore size and fade post-acne marks. Don’t let the “acid” in the name of these amazing ingredients scare you, especially considering that our skin’s surface is naturally acidic.

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel

What is your favorite part about the new exfoliant peel from Paula’s Choice?

At Paula’s Choice we have many different strengths of AHAs and BHA leave-on exfoliants so you can find the best one for you. We created our Skin Perfecting 25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel, with a clinical strength concentration of AHAs and BHA because for people with advanced sun damage, signs of aging, uneven skin tone, breakouts, or clogged pores, a higher strength treatment used once or twice a week can make even greater improvements.

This unique exfoliant is effective and works fast—without causing irritation. We chose a mix of 25% AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic, malic and tartaric acids) to give skin the benefit of each one’s unique properties to exfoliate and hydrate along with 2% BHA (salicylic acid) for its impact on pores and redness.

Combined, they dramatically (but gently) exfoliate the dead built-up layers of dull, rough skin, unclog congested pores, improve uneven skin tone, and reduce the depth of pronounced wrinkles. The most impressive part is how our formula works so effectively but is still calming thanks to the soothing mix of allantoin, glycyrrhetinic acid, bisabolol and butterfly pea flower extract.

What is your best piece of skincare advice?

There is so much to know about skincare but without question nothing is as important as wearing sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater 365 days a year. This is necessary even when you’re working from home or on a cloudy day because the sun’s UVA rays penetrate through windows and clouds. Don’t fool yourself by saying, well I’m not going to be outside for very long so I don’t need a sunscreen! Research has shown that even just 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure starts aging skin and triggers other skin disorders. Even the best anti-aging products can’t prevent or undo sun damage. This basic skincare fact is one of the reasons we’ve formulated so many sunscreens so you can find the one you will love to use every day!

Day In The Life: Jen Atkin https://dujour.com/beauty/day-in-the-life-ouai-founder-jen-atkin/ Mon, 21 Dec 2020 19:30:25 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=117779 The hairstylist and haircare entrepreneur takes us through a jam-packed day in her shoes

The post Day In The Life: Jen Atkin appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Jen Atkin may have become famous for her deft use of social media and her working relationship with the Kardashian-Jenners, but after years of working in hair, she was a true product expert. “I got to know almost every product, every brand out there,” says the hairstylist and entrepreneur. “I would walk down the aisle at Sephora and see so many different options to the point of overwhelm. I wanted to create a super-curated line of products that were easy to interpret and use for people who weren’t necessarily hair experts.” Ouai was born in 2016 as a paraben-, phthalate- and sulfate-free haircare line featuring shampoo, conditioner and styling products—and the line has since grown to include body products. Because of Atkin’s massive personal social media following (3.6 million Instagram followers and counting), Ouai made a splash in the market and quickly garnered its own social media following, allowing the brand to tap that audience. “We have always prioritized the feedback from our community since Day 1 and so often will launch a product based on what it is that they want,” she explains. “Having a following allowed us to crowdsource the products people wanted.”

Simplifying haircare was paramount for the hairstylist who got her start in the industry at age 20 working for John Galliano at Dior. After that, she worked for hairstylist Andy LeCompte, who took her on tour with Madonna for eight months. An introduction to the jeweler Lorraine Schwartz led Atkin to meeting the Kardashian-Jenner family—a friendship that has since opened a lot of doors—and it steamrolled from there. She’s styled hair for every member of the Kardashian and Jenner family in addition to Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Baldwin Bieber, Chrissy Teigen and Bella Hadid.

And if she wasn’t busy enough, she decided to pen a memoir-meets-business book about her journey; Blowing My Way to the Top (Harper Collins) is out now. “I wanted to offer insight into the values that allowed me to thrive in the modern digital landscape,” Atkin explains. “I came up in a truly male-dominated industry and I wanted to speak frankly about the challenges I’ve faced and provide crucial advice for other women about running a business, being a feminist and learning to navigate the work and life issues that impact women the most.”

So how have COVID-19 restrictions changed the way the peripatetic 40-year-old does business in Los Angeles? “Things are not as hectic now and I don’t travel for work as much as I used to,” she says. “My husband [photographer Mike Rosenthal] and I have gotten a lot of perspective from slowing down this year, and we don’t miss the treadmill we were constantly on.” Here’s how Atkin spends a typical day.

7:00 A.M. Wake up and walk and feed the dogs, then make some tea. I usually start my day with the Five Minute Journal to practice gratitude and a meditation from the Hoffman Process.

8:00 A.M. I do a Train with Danny workout via Zoom or go on a run. It’s been so important to me to make daily activity a priority. I think one thing we really take for granted is our health, and I try to remember that when I’m dreading working out.

10:00 A.M. Breakfast is usually quick and easy. A cup of yogurt with fresh berries and some cinnamon cereal and a side of my Olly Miss Mellow Vitamins. I’m usually listening to the podcasts Second Life or Having It ALL.

10:30 A.M. I’m usually sitting down for my first of many meetings of the day. Between working with the teams on developing marketing campaigns for future products at Ouai, virtual events for Dyson and content strategy planning at Mane Addicts, my mornings are pretty full.

1:00-3:00 P.M. I set time aside to film and strategize content for my personal @jenatkinhair Instagram. Between Stories for crowdsourcing, Reels for tutorials, teasing upcoming projects and keeping my grid looking pretty and authentic, it’s a full-time job.

3:00 P.M. Lunch and an afternoon caffeine kick. I’m a Chamberlain Coffee espresso on ice with a bit of Ripple pea milk gal.

6:00 P.M. Mike and I try to take our dogs for a walk together to catch up on our days, or I make a call to a friend to make sure they’re not losing their mind…because 2020.

7:00 P.M. We usually Postmates dinner or my husband cooks. We love The Crown and just finished the new season.

9:00 P.M. I start my nighttime routine. I use Charlotte Tilbury Take It All Off eye makeup remover, Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel and La Mer eye cream. On my body I use Ouai Body Crème to moisturize before bed and usually finish the day with an Olly Sleep gummy and have to be in bed no phones and asleep by 10:30 p.m.

Gucci Westman Shares Her Tips For Glowing Skin https://dujour.com/beauty/gucci-westman-shares-her-tips-for-glowing-skin/ Mon, 14 Dec 2020 16:00:31 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=117561 The celebrity makeup artist spills her skincare secrets and the beauty trends she is excited to see this season

Not only has Gucci Westman made up the faces of celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, DuJour cover star Julianne Moore, and Anne Hathaway, the makeup artist and founder of Westman Atelier has seriously flawless skin herself. Whether dolled up for a special occasion or rocking a barely-there natural look, Westman has some sort of magic when it comes to makeup and skincare. With the holidays swiftly approaching, we caught up with Westman to steal some of her secrets for the season. Find out everything from her favorite primers to how to look super chic for your Zoom holiday party below.

How to Select a Primer For The Winter:

I’ve never loved primers since so many contain silicones, so I prefer to use a serum and moisturizer combination that I know will leave my skin hydrated and glowing but won’t cause my makeup to pill. I like to use Aurelia’s Revitalize and Glow Serum after cleansing since it’s super lightweight and leaves my skin calm and balanced. After the serum has soaked in, I’ll pat in Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Brightening Face Cream. It contains light reflecting pigments for an instant glow. No matter your climate, I think it’s good to avoid anything too rich or heavy under makeup.

New Holiday Makeup Trend:

With more people focusing on the eyes, I think a lot of women might go for a chic update to the smoky eye with unexpected colors and even a touch of highlight on top to make them look wet and glossy. I love the Vin Rouge shade in our Eye Pods Collection for creating a velvety burgundy eye look.

How to Perfect Your Makeup For a Virtual Celebration:

If your holidays are virtual this year, I think it’s so pretty to do really luminous skin with a bright lip since it translates so well over Zoom or FaceTime. Glide Lit Up Highlight Stick on to tops of cheeks, Cupid’s bow, and tear ducts. Give yourself a little warmth with Beauty Butter Bronzer and add extra radiance by sweeping Super Loaded Tinted Highlight up the cheeks and across the eyelids. Coat your lashes in a super black mascara like Eye Love You. For the ultimate brightening boost, finish with a bright lip using Lip Suede in Les Rouges. A pop of fuchsia or tomato red is so flattering against every skin color. You can even combine the two for a gorgeous orchid shade.

Pre-Holiday Party Skincare Tips:

Stick to the skincare products you know work for you. Essentially, you want to make sure your skin is clean, free of any dead skin cells and properly moisturized. An exfoliant like Eminence’s Strawberry-Rhubarb Dermafoliant is nice for prepping skin before makeup since it’s super gentle but effective. I like to pat Costa Brazil’s Kaya Anti-Aging Face Oil into my skin before sealing everything in with a hydrating moisturizer like Goopgenes Face Cream. For extra luminosity, I’ll even add a few drops of Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Glow Drops in with the face cream.

Post-Holiday Party Skincare Tips:

For the day after a party, hydration and facial massaging is key to bouncing back. I like to add a Nuun tablet into my water for extra electrolytes. Place an eye mask under and above the eyes to tackle any puffiness. I like 111skin’s cooling, Sub-Zero De-Puffing Eye Mask since it’s super soothing and anti-inflammatory. While the eye mask is on, do a bit of massaging to get your circulation going. Use a facial roller like Joanna Czech’s or a rose quartz stone that you’ve kept in the freezer. Work from the middle of your face and push outward. I’m also a huge advocate for LED light. I’m obsessed with Koyo Rantania Miracle–it’s a handheld light device with microcurrent that instantly firms your skin. Pat any leftover essence from the eye patches into your eye area and top it with an eye serum. Tata Harper’s Elixir Vitae is packed with actives to hydrate, de-puff and minimize any dark circles.

Daphne Oz’s Stress-Busting Skincare https://dujour.com/beauty/daphne-oz-co-owner-loum-beauty-skincare/ Wed, 18 Nov 2020 17:30:57 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=117002 The lifestyle entrepreneur has signed up as co-owner of the new clean skincare brand LOUM

The post Daphne Oz’s Stress-Busting Skincare appeared first on DuJour.

Author, television host and content creator Daphne Oz is always looking for a way to save time and look her best. To that end, she recently teamed up with skincare brand LOUM as a co-owner. The mother of four was eager to get behind a curated group of essential products specifically designed to treat aging, blemishes and dry/sensitive skin. “I am a total beauty junkie and committed to finding the cleanest way to achieve my [skincare] goals,” Oz tells DuJour exclusively. “I immediately fell in love with the promise of a brand whose mission is to help busy women put our best face forward every single day and offers a totally novel method to tackling the science of beautiful skin.” The vegan and cruelty-free line isn’t overwhelming or too time-consuming so it’s an easy commitment. “Taking good care of yourself doesn’t need to be another thing that stresses you out or takes too much time,” says Oz. “Ideally, these moments of self-care should make us feel as good on the inside as they do on the outside.”

We spoke with Oz, who splits her time between New York and Palm Beach, to learn more about LOUM and her skincare secrets.

How does stress affect our skin?

It’s funny that given stress is at the root of nearly all the issues women claim most challenge and disrupt their skin’s appearance, no skincare line to-date has focused exclusively on tackling the specific pathways of how stress shows up on skin. Whether it is from cortisol literally destroying collagen (bye, elasticity!), or sebum dysregulation that can create enlarged pores and a prime breeding ground for bacteria (hi breakouts!), stress is a beauty killer.

What skincare concerns do you have personally?

Because I’ve worn TV makeup for years, and plenty of makeup for fun before that, plus busy days as a working mama of four, I’ve definitely had my ups and downs with skin. Since introducing LOUM to my routine, this is the happiest my skin has ever been because I’m able to do less and have my skin find its own balance.

With four small children, how do you maintain a beauty regimen and incorporate LOUM into your routine?

I love that our masks, for instance the Renew and Brighten Polishing Minifacial, work in just a few minutes. I need something that’s effective and fast-acting but gentle. Something we can all squeeze in, even on the busiest of days, and a simple way we tell our bodies and our minds that we prioritize taking good care of ourselves in a meaningful way where we can really see results fast.

Did you share samples with friends and family to try out along the way?

Absolutely! I got my sisters and friends hooked on factory samples of the Pure Serenity Golden C Serum first. One of my sisters has oilier skin and the other has very sensitive skin (and I have dry skin!) and we are all in love. It’s something easy to press on to clean skin in the morning and at night for a boost of radiance and it is a perfect primer under our Balance & Prime Gel Moisturizer for a plump, dewy makeup look.

LOUM Redefine Contour Firming Cream

LOUM Redefine Contour Firming Cream

What are your current favorites from LOUM?

I usually work out and then cleanse with the cleansing balm and a gentle exfoliating cleanser. I’ll press the Pure Serenity Golden C Serum over my entire face, neck and chest and follow with the Balance & Prime Gel Moisturizer if I’m doing makeup or just a quick press of the Redefine Contour Firming Cream which my dry skin loves. Sometimes I sneak in a quick Tranquil Radiance Nutrient Mask right after my shower while I make my coffee. At night, I cleanse with the Be Calm Cleansing Balm again–I use the Stress Detox Enzymatic Cleanser once or twice a week for a deeper clean–and then press the Golden C Serum over my skin again, followed by the Awaken Glow Elixir Oil and a generous slather of the Contour Cream which acts like an overnight mask.

How does your skin fare differently in humid, warm Florida compared to New York in the colder months?

The biggest change I feel from Florida life is that the air is so lovely and humid so I don’t need to over-hydrate like I do up north. I am reminded to wear sunscreen more regularly down here, but other than that, my routine pretty much stays the same.

Have your social media followers given you feedback yet?

Yes! I love hearing from my audience who have been trying the line at home and have had friends coming up to them commenting on how amazing their skin looks! I can’t tell you how much reading these comments makes my day because I know what a confidence-boost these compliments bring. We take on our whole day differently when we feel good.

Byredo Unveils Three Glam Eyeshadow Palettes https://dujour.com/beauty/byredo-unveils-three-glam-eyeshadow-palettes/ Mon, 16 Nov 2020 19:30:17 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=116935 Byredo has introduced the newest addition to the brand’s makeup collection and we’re obsessed

The post Byredo Unveils Three Glam Eyeshadow Palettes appeared first on DuJour.

With the October launch of Byredo’s makeup collection in collaboration with artist Isamaya Ffrench, the brand showcased a roster of stellar makeup bag classics like mascara and black eyeliner, along with vibrant shades of lipsticks and a universal color stick in 16 shades. The formulas are rich and high-quality but the packaging is what will seriously steal your heart. From the curved red mascara tube to the silver and gold lipstick cases, the collection is more than makeup–it is art.

The newest launch to join the artfully designed collection from Byredo are three five-color eyeshadow palettes each with their own narrative told through the shades of pigment. “The color story and high quality of materials are essential elements, but so are the objects containing the cosmetics,” says Ben Gorham, founder and creative director of Byredo. “These objects are tangible, personal and sensual. The clasp, the noise, the magnet… I wanted the idea of quality and performance through the structure and weight of all.”

The three palettes (Syren, Corporate Colours, and Sciomancer) were created with self-expression at the forefront. ”Makeup used to have a kind of repetitive palette but now there is so much freedom in color and its use, I wanted to design collections that actually connect to a story,” says Isamaya Ffrench, makeup artist and Byredo collaborator.

Sciomancer was designed to celebrate musician Yves Tumor and his unapologetically vibrant glam rock attitude. The metallic violet, rich green, and biodegradable glitter are as punk as it gets.

Corporate Colours offers a selection of five elevated nudes inspired by the Italian twin sisters behind luxury fashion brand Medea. The Medea Sisters embody elegance and modern minimalism, but with a chic shimmer laced throughout, which is exactly what you’ll find in this palette of deep espresso, warm vanilla, and dazzling hazelnut.

Finally, Syren is Byredo and Isamaya Ffrench’s “perspective on pretty.” The five-pan palette represents Ffrench’s transformation into a mermaid, with a sparkly blue, vibrant sea green, and feminine blush pink.

The New Byredo Makeup Collection is Artfully Cool https://dujour.com/beauty/byredo-makeup-collection-isamaya-ffrench/ Fri, 06 Nov 2020 18:00:46 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=116813 The first five products in Byredo's makeup collection were created in collaboration with makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench

This October, after two years of planning and working, Swedish fragrance and beauty brand Byredo launched the first Byredo makeup collection, a collaboration between the brand’s founder and creative director Ben Gorham and makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench. “I started to feel that there could be a very visual manifestation of beauty for Byredo,” says Gorham. “I thought our visual ideas could be as different as our approach to scent. As I started to really look at the beauty world I found much of it conservative and conventional. I thought we can do this, and we can do it differently.”

The new beauty line features multipurpose products such as the creamy Color Stick that is available in 16 shades ranging from shimmery neutrals to vibrant matte pigments and can be worn on the eyes, lips, or cheeks. “I don’t want to tell people how to wear the cosmetics, just to inspire them,” says Fffrench. “Some of our first products are simply sticks of color–colors that are universally beautiful and to be worn in whichever way you like.”

The classic beauty staples in the Byredo makeup collaboration include a mascara that comes in a stunning curved red container that makes the product look just as good on your beauty counter as it does on your eyelashes. The intense black eyeliner has a firm applicator that is perfect for creating abstract and precise lines or a bold cat eye, and comes in a sleek green container so you will never misplace this eyeliner in your makeup bag.

The lipstick is available in seven satin shades and eight matte shades–all made with a vegan formula. The heavy metal casing makes the lipstick feel more like an heirloom than a beauty product. To put it simply, the silver-gold-bi-color tube is artfully luxurious. The lip balm and the recently released eyeshadow palettes round out the new collection and is adorned in the brand’s smart packaging. “Ultimately, beauty is subjective–Byredo Makeup had to reflect that,” Gorham says of the brand’s latest launch.
