Where to Eat

The Omakase Room at Sushi-san is a new 10-seat omakase experience where master sushi chef Kaze Chan will showcase his inventive Japanese cuisine through an 18-course menu that will include influences from his roots in Vietnam, China and Japan. Products will be impeccably sourced from around the world; the chef’s relationship with the Yamasaki family at the Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo provides the restaurant with the freshest seafood available, with a focus on wild, line-caught fish. The design of the space is reminiscent of a modern Japanese loft, where you will feel like you have been invited to a dinner party at chef Chan’s home. Once seated, guests will be encouraged to interact with the chefs at work while they dine; the chefs will have raised custom Hinoki cypress cutting boards so chefs and guests are at eye level with each other. The team worked with local ceramicists and stonemasons to create serving pieces, including a custom-made lazy susan at each seat. Sake, wine, Japanese whiskey and cocktails crafted with hand-chipped ice are also on offer.

Art Exhibits

With a unique creative process that is triggered by everything from fashion and media to social injustices, Chicago-based artist Nick Cave has been celebrated for his vibrant works of art for decades. Cave got his start studying with the likes of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City and working as a display designer for Macy’s. His new exhibit, Nick Cave: Forothermore, runs at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago through October 2 and showcases just how expansive and immersive his art truly is. “We are both thrilled and humbled to work with Nick Cave on the first major retrospective of his brilliant work over the last 30 years,” says MCA director Madeleine Grynsztejn. “Nick’s passion for allowing art and beauty to address deeper questions of our time has been a tremendous influence on the artistic community and to those who encounter his work in Chicago and abroad. Nick’s awe-inspiring creations and stunning performances encourage us to think of a more harmonious future.” The exhibit will include over a dozen works, including never-before-seen pieces from Cave’s popular Soundsuits series alongside his new series, Soundsuits 9:29, which addresses today’s heightened awareness for racial justice in response to the 2020 death of George Floyd.

Mel Bochner has been a pioneer of conceptual art for nearly six decades, producing thought-provoking drawings, paintings, prints, photography, sculptures, books and installations. His new exhibit, Mel Bochner Drawings: A Retrospective, opens at the Art Institute of Chicago on April 23 and will run through the summer. Featuring nearly 90 works of art from Bochner’s expansive career, this is the first exhibition to employ drawing as an organizational emphasis, signifying Bochner’s artistic influence starting with his earliest drawings in the 1960s through to the modern day. Over the years, Bochner has questioned the definition of a drawing, and through various iterations has explored ideas like language, numbers, visual perception, seriality and the blurring of word and picture through his drawings. This exhibit will showcase a range of interpretative drawings, including traditional drawings from ink, pencil and charcoal alongside mixed media pieces made from burnt matchsticks on paper, oil paint on newspaper and wall drawings in powder pigment. These works further cement the idea that drawing, by definition, might not be so black-and-white.

Where to Eat in Chicago:

Situated in River North, HiFi Hospitality’s Chalet welcomes guests with cozy après-ski vibes and tavern-style comfort food designed for sharing, featuring elevated dishes that evoke a Rocky Mountain feel. Must-try dishes range from salmon tartare and duck confit poutine to grilled peach flatbread and honey braised short ribs. Inspired by the upscale lodges that mountain towns like Aspen are known for, the restaurant boasts natural wood and exposed brick with warm lighting. On the second floor, diners can enjoy hand-crafted libations in a chic lounge space. A 24-seat sidewalk café is also open seasonally.

Dishes at Chalet

At Robert Et Fils, a new destination for fine French cuisine in North Center, chef/owner Rob Shaner puts forth an inventive, ever-changing menu based on the ingredients available daily from local purveyors and the farmers market. Not only does Shaner love adding new dishes to the lineup on a whim, he’s also a fan of fermentation and upcycling. Expect a cozy, dimly lit space adorned with greenery as well as a bustling open kitchen.

The Cocktail Club, the new venture by nightlife aficionado Billy Dec, offers a modern take on Jazz Age entertainment featuring a multi-sensorial design, exceptional craft libations and live performances ranging from drag to choreographed dance. Designed by the all-female team at Chicago-based design firm Project, the club’s luxe interior embraces a 1920s ambiance finished with flickering street lamps, velvet upholstery, rose gold mirrors, feather plumes, large palms and a ceiling of parasols. Guests can enjoy bottle service as they groove to decade-hopping DJ sets with jazz interludes.

Where to Stay in Chicago:

The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago has completed the final phase of a $100 million renovation, culminating with an inspired redesign of the guestrooms and suites. Inspired by its iconic Gold Coast address, the brand tapped San Francisco–based design firm Bamo to revitalize its guest rooms, lobby, spa, Club Lounge and dining destinations. A palette of blue and neutral gray hues reflects the seasonal skies and waters of neighboring Lake Michigan, while dark upholstered furnishings pop against the soft gray walls and floor coverings—a nod to the skyscrapers set against lake and horizon. Upgraded bathrooms are decidedly modern, sophisticated and minimalist and feature arctic glacier white vanities and gray linear stone covering the walls and floor.

What to Do in Chicago:

In 2013, chemist and Nobel Laureate Sir Fraser Stoddart began his research into Organic Molecular Vessel technology (OMV) with the goal of creating unparalleled skincare formulations. The development of this breakthrough science produced a skincare line that protects and preserves active ingredients for a healthier, more radiant complexion. “At Noble Panacea, we believe in the gentle yet powerful potency of active, best-in-class ingredients,” says Stoddart. “While the quality of the ingredient is key, its delivery system is equally important. Our OMV technology preserves ingredients at the molecular level for freshness and integrity so that the innate full power of the ingredients is unleashed.”

Tucked inside Izard’s Little Goat Diner, the duo serves up creative treats for takeaway such as the Cheez-It Cake, Chocolate Shake French Fry Pie and Oatmeal Pickled Raisin Cookies, as well as muffins, bagels, scones and pastries. Thirsty visitors can choose from a selection of cocktails or coffee from local roaster Dark Matter to go. “Faith and I started to think of all of our favorite childhood flavor combinations, like dipping a french fry in a milkshake or pancakes covered in maple syrup, and created desserts that helped bring back those memories,” says Izard.

Madame ZuZu’s

Musician Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins and his partner, Chloe Mendel, have opened Madame ZuZu’s, a plant-based tea shop in Highland Park that also serves as a cultural hub for the arts. Visitors to this whimsical tea salon will not only appreciate its art deco-inspired mural but also its selection of teas created in collaboration with Rare Tea Cellar. Notable blends include French Kissed Moroccan Mint, Vintage Hot Chocolate Aged Pu-Erh and Soothing Sunshine Ginger Turmeric. Plant-based comfort foods such as Chloe’s Infamous Tomato Soup and Grandma JoJo’s Meatball Sandwich can be enjoyed under the heat lamps in the outdoor dining space or at home. Those in the mood for something warm and boozy can try the mulled wine brewed with bourbon vanilla chai.

The post Smooth Operator in Chicago appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
With women everywhere taking control of their skin regimen in the comfort and relaxation of their own homes, this is the time for self-care at home. Dermaflash is a new brand of technologically advanced, clinically proven dermaplaning devices that make the task of achieving a smooth, healthy complexion even simpler. Created at beauty guru and founder Dara Levy’s luxury Med Spa in Chicago, the brand’s multitasking tools including the Dermaflash Luxe and the new Dermapore, which promise to safely improve the quality of skin long-term. “Our signature treatment was our dermaplaning facial,” explains Levy. “Five years and 6,000 dermaplaning facials later, I realized an at-home dermaplaning solution did not exist, so I decided to create it.” We spoke with Levy about this breakthrough technology.

The Dermaflash device

The Dermaflash device

What’s special about this device?

Before Dermaflash, dermaplaning was a little-known treatment that was only available in doctors’ offices or medical spas. All women desire smooth, radiant, fuzz-free skin, yet most do not have access to a spa offering the treatment, and the price of a single session is prohibitive. I decided to bring dermaplaning into the mainstream and empower women to take their skincare concerns into their own hands, on their own schedules, in the safety and comfort of their own homes.

How does it work?

Dermaflash removes dead skin cells, built-up debris and pesky peach fuzz to instantly reveal smooth, radiant and younger skin. It amps up the efficacy of skincare by removing the barrier to penetration, while also creating a flawless canvas for makeup.

What are the benefits?

Dermaflash is first and foremost an exfoliating device with the added benefit of peach fuzz removal. Women grow vellus hair that is light and cottony, and this device was specifically designed for women’s delicate skin.

Maison Atia is Saving Coats of a Different Kind in Chicago https://dujour.com/cities/maison-atia-is-saving-coats-of-a-different-kind-in-chicago/ Mon, 26 Oct 2020 15:00:14 +0000 Lauren Watzich https://dujour.com/?p=116408 Chloe Mendel, the creative director of Maison Atia, teamed up with PAWS Chicago to save animals through her chic faux fur line

The post Maison Atia is Saving Coats of a Different Kind in Chicago appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Chloe Mendel, the talented daughter of fashion designer Gilles Mendel, co-founded luxury faux fur coat label Maison Atia alongside Gustave Maisonrouge. Now, she’s helping to save coats of a different kind. The fashion house’s #BuyACoatSaveAPuppy campaign is working in tandem with PAWS Chicago, a leading no-kill animal shelter, to provide animals with access to safe living conditions through every coat sold. Mendel discovered PAWS Chicago through her partner Billy Corgan, lead singer of Smashing Pumpkins, and ever since, the shelter has been the designer’s happy place. The best part is that #BuyACoatSaveAPuppy will always be a part of Maison Atia’s mission. The coats, which are adored by celebrities like Kate Moss, are equally furry and adorable—this season’s vibrant styles were inspired by pop artist Robert Indiana. “I imagine these coats inside the incredible closet of Diana Vreeland, whose style was as timeless as she was,” says Mendel.

Maison Atia

The Genevieve coat in canary

How did the campaign come about?

Having adopted four pets from PAWS Chicago, it only felt natural to partner with this charity that changed my life for the better. With every coat sold, we provide a homeless pet free transportation to a no-kill shelter with the help of PAWS Chicago. You don’t think about it, but the costs of the transportation are a financial weight.

Where do the proceeds go?

PAWS puts great effort into transporting pets from disaster relief areas nationwide to their fantastic medical center in Chicago, and then placing them into great homes for life. Every faux fur coat we sell covers this cost.

What makes Maison Atia so special?

I am a sixth-generation furrier, so the vernacular of a furrier runs through my veins. As I started to shop for faux fur for myself, I didn’t understand why there wasn’t a faux fur option that I thought was chic. I saw so much potential in this new material, and I knew I could transform faux fur.

Do you have a favorite from the fall/winter collection?

My favorite coat is the Genevieve trench. It is bold and chic, but also feels cozy. I didn’t realize when I designed it that the world would be turned upside down and that we would all look for comfort for our bodies and souls, but here it is!

Meet The Man Behind BIÂN Chicago https://dujour.com/cities/bian-chicago-wellness-club-kevin-boehm/ Thu, 16 Jul 2020 15:00:07 +0000 Rebecca Taras https://dujour.com/?p=114630 With almost three decades of experience, restaurateur Kevin Boehm expands his horizons with a health and wellness concept

The post Meet The Man Behind BIÂN Chicago appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
After opening 30 restaurants in the last 27 years, James Beard award-winning restaurateur Kevin Boehm (along with partners Robb Leone and Joseph Fisher) has launched his most challenging concept to date: BIÂN, a posh integrative wellness club. Expect state-of-the-art equipment; extensive fitness, yoga and pilates classes; cutting-edge therapeutic modalities; lavish spa and beauty services; and a cold plunge pool and steam room.

Every member will receive a fully personalized health and wellness program (the club also has a complete medical facility) that blends Eastern and Western medical practices. Physicians include those who work with the Chicago Blackhawks, U.S. Men’s Soccer team, U.S. Women’s Volleyball team, and the Chicago Marathon, as well as one of the leading naturopathic doctors in the U.S.

But instead of serving hearty fare, as at his star restaurant Boka, BIÂN will offer a curated selection of organic food and beverage including energizing smoothies, juices and elixirs and organic wine and spirits. Boehm explains why he decided to jump on the healthy bandwagon and what he does to keep his life in balance.

BIÂN Chicago

How is BIÂN a departure for you and your restaurants?

Wellness is such a big part of my life, and BIÂN is a reflection of how my partners and I want to live. There is a blank space in this intersection of medical, beauty, fitness and healthy food. We think we can fill it by building a wellness ecosystem.

What do you see as the future of dining in Chicago?

People want to be challenged more with cuisine than they used to. Those also want layers. Layers of food, of design, and they want a story behind everything. People get bored very quickly these days. They want concepts with depth to them.

BIÂN Chicago

What are your favorite venues and restaurants right now?

I love Juno, HaiSous, Café Cancale and Bar Biscay.

How do you unwind when you’re not working?

I try to find myself on a yoga mat at least three times a week. I love movies, and I play a lot of vinyl … everything from Miles Davis to Van Morrison.

How to Borrow Personal Style https://dujour.com/cities/janet-mandell-clothing-rental-chicago-interview/ Tue, 19 May 2020 16:30:34 +0000 Rebecca Taras https://dujour.com/?p=113321 Janet Mandell is making fashion more egalitarian thanks to her eponymous high-end fashion rental company

The post How to Borrow Personal Style appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Sartorial superstar Janet Mandell’s new River North showroom boasts a luxe inventory of over 3,000 items of clothing and accessories, with many of the unique pieces coming from her personal archive. The entrepreneur and stylist recently expanded from a flagship Chicago showroom to an additional permanent location in West Hollywood after a successful pop-up.

“We never expected to expand so fast,” says Mandell, who’s worked with Gigi and Bella Hadid and Ariana Grande. “My inventory started from my closet and then expanded into all size offerings.” Some standout pieces in her sought-after collection are a Saint Laurent black velvet one shoulder crystal embellished dress and a great selection of Chanel tweed suits (just ask Priyanka Chopra, who borrowed a yellow and white check ensemble last April for a Broadway opening) along with Manolo Blahnik heels, jewelry by Van Cleef & Arpels and clutches by Judith Leiber. We chatted with Mandell to get her personal style picks.

Why Chicago?

Chicago is our home and it was easy for us to start here. I also believe Chicago needs something like this more than Los Angeles or New York City. There are lots of fashionable women here.

What are your best styling tips?

Accessories are key! Never underestimate the power of hats and belts. I grew up with a mother who never stepped out without a scarf around her neck, Chanel ballet slippers and red lips.

What trends are you looking forward to this spring?

Statement bows and ruffles! I’m excited for the feminine looks I’m seeing on the runway to come to life. My celebrity
clients are all about sex appeal, and I cannot wait to get my hands on some of these monochrome sheer numbers too.

Why is vintage appealing to you and your clients?

You can always rely on designer vintage to come back. When I buy my inventory, vintage is important to us because it really sets us apart from other rental services. We dress a handful of celebrities and this is really what they are looking for.

This winter, the Museum of Contemporary Art presents “Mika Rottenberg: Easypieces,” a solo exhibition of the Argentine-Israeli video artist Mika Rottenberg. The artist’s immersive installations use satire to explore issues of the material word and environmental and commercial concerns. Her kinetic sculptures that transform and invert objects and the absurdist environments of her videos are often disorienting. “The exhibition invites you into a surreal world that calls attention to the unseen labor and technology that sustain our global economy,” says its curator Bana Kattan. “Mika really thinks about the experience of the visitor; she carefully considers how sound travels in the space, she often shows the visitor the back of the work, purposely leaving it looking unfinished. From the moment you arrive, you are prompted to choose your own adventure by picking one of the two different entrance paths into the exhibition. She plays with perspective, making you aware of the floor you are standing on, the walls that surround you, and even, the ceiling that looms overhead.” Through March 8.

Desiree Rogers Takes Over CEO Role at Black Opal https://dujour.com/cities/interview-desiree-rogers-ceo-beauty-brand-black-opal/ Wed, 12 Feb 2020 16:30:36 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=110038 The Chicago-based beauty brand is changing the skincare game

The post Desiree Rogers Takes Over CEO Role at Black Opal appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Desiree Rogers, the former CEO of Johnson Publishing which owned Fashion Fair Cosmetics for women of color, has just announced her next move as co-owner and CEO of the Black Opal beauty brand. After initially approaching the owners two years ago, Rogers (who also served as a White House social secretary under President Obama) and her longtime friend and now partner Cheryl Mayberry McKissack have finally sealed the deal to take over the Chicago-based company.

“This brand offers products that people of color believe are meant for them and is affordable,” says Rogers, who is eager to expand the men’s and skincare product offerings. “We will also add shades to our existing formulations that consumers have requested and feature highly pigmented colors that pop on the darkest of skin tones.” Now under the control of two African American businesswomen for the first time in its history, Black Opal will continue to be a mainstay product line among makeup artists working in television and film and for celebrities on and off the red carpet. “I first noticed the brand in makeup artist kits when I was having my makeup professionally done,” says Rogers. “It has also served people of color for over 25 years having been developed exclusively to tend to the specific skincare and makeup needs of this group.” We talked to Rogers about this next chapter for the cosmetic brand and learned what changes are ahead.

How do you plan to bring Black Opal into the future digitally with so much change in the industry in recent years?

We will not ignore the base that has supported this brand for over 25 years but will open up a dialogue with them. It has already started–I can’t wait for our consumers to see how their conversation is impacting the direction of the brand along with our vision to excite them with new products, makeup artistry and real faces behind the brand.

Things have obviously changed in the market since Black Opal was founded and many brands are now more inclusive in their shade offerings for people of all colors. How do you compete with those brands in this new climate?

It’s all in the quality of the products. The biggest advantage that Black Opal has is it’s formulations that are tried-and-true. The brand has been serving this consumer long before it was trendy. There are ingredients in these formulations that are just not being used by companies that are producing more shades. It is just not cost-effective for them. By focusing on only people of color, we are able to deliver, in my opinion, a superior product.

What are some of your favorite products from the brand?

I’m love the primer, foundation sticks and mascara.

What excites you the most about tackling this new project?

I am thrilled to partner with another black woman to lead this incredible brand into the future. We have also decided that our mission is to continue to supply high-quality skincare and makeup for people of color at an affordable price and do what we can to promote a message of financial independence.

Meet Your New Favorite Interior Designer https://dujour.com/cities/interior-designer-felicia-ferrone-chicago-interview/ Wed, 09 Oct 2019 15:30:43 +0000 Jessie Aljuni https://dujour.com/?p=105766 Get to know Felicia Ferrone, the Chicago-based designer who creates pieces for the present and future

The post Meet Your New Favorite Interior Designer appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
An award-winning architect, housewares designer, and professor, Felicia Ferrone is the definition of a jack-of-all-trades. Born and raised in Chicago, she graduated from Miami University, Ohio, and then moved to Milan, where she worked under some of the city’s most prominent design luminaries, including Antonio Citterio and Piero Lissoni. It was there that she first began to develop her own unique style. Ferrone describes the experience of living in the Italian city as one where she “began to realize how the different disciplines of architecture and design overlap, how the roles of commerce and design history are intertwined, and how the artistic process and the final outcome must be in balance. Milan taught me how to see and be inspired.”

It’s this global attitude that has led Ferrone to become one of the visionaries of the design community, as well as the director of graduate studies in industrial design and a clinical associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Never one to settle on a single career path, she has also created a thriving glassware and furniture business. “I try to give my creations both qualities of form and function without insisting that one overshadows the other,” she says. “I also make pieces that live in the present. While we see a lot of design referencing past eras or riffing on particular vintage details, I try to keep my focus on the form as an expression of today and the future.”

This desire to serve up function but also make that object aesthetically pleasing is what first drew Ferrone to designing housewares. “I long to capture and inspire these special social moments where friends come together to celebrate, and do so with extraordinary pieces to enhance the experience.” No collection from her tremendous body of work showcases this more incisively than her May line. Designed around her favorite month, it reflects a time when the season transitions from spring to summer, and longer days mean more gatherings around good food and drinks.

“What Came After: Figurative Painting in Chicago 1978-’98”
September 14 – January 12

Organized by internationally renowned local artist Phyllis Bramson, the collection will feature pivotal works of the Chicago Imagists movement. Bramson says of the exhibition, “Many have struggled with understanding and processing the term ‘Chicago Imagism’ since it was first used in the early 1970s, including artists that built on the ideas of their peers or sought to break free from expectations of that legacy. What Came After better defines and celebrates this later generation of artists, which have been called third generation Imagists, Post-Imagists, and the Chicago School.”

“From Here to There”
September 23 – January 19

This multimedia showcase, curated by the Spertus Institute, will feature four Chicago contemporary artists: Linda Robinson Gordon, Ellen Holtzblatt, Lilach Schrag, and Michelle Stone. The collection, inspired by the natural world, is set to evoke the concept of Lech Lecha, a Hebrew phrase from the third parashah that translates as “go forth.” The artists will be experimenting and stretching boundaries of their artistic practices with works that will include drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos, and installations.

“Tetsuya Ishida: Self-Portrait of Other”
October 3 – December 14

The Wrightwood 659 gallery will collaborate with the Museo Nacional Centro De Arte Reina Sofía, in Madrid, to bring the first retrospective exhibition from acclaimed Japanese artist Tetsuya Ishida to the United States. The collection includes some 70 paintings, drawings, and notebooks from the artist, and showcases some of Ishida’s most prolific pieces of work depicting the hardships of everyday life in Japan during a
time of nationwide economic recession.

Since launching her eponymous studio in 2008, which later evolved into a highly successful boutique in the Ravinia District of Highland Park, Jill Alberts dreamed of creating a space that would “allow for more events, trunk shows, and a wider selection of jewelry, accessories, and home decor.” Now her hard work and vision are paying off, with the May opening of her new location at 311 Park Avenue in Glencoe. Speaking to her choice of neighborhood, Alberts says, “My husband and I recently moved to Glencoe. We have come to love the community and its people. It is vibrant and welcoming.” Inspired by her love of design, the look of the store is an homage to the Hollywood Regency and midcentury modern eras, featuring custom brass fixtures, chandelier lighting, and hardwood floors. The decor is “Bergdorf Goodman meets Malibu Beach boutique!” she says. “Elegant but accessible and warm.” The gorgeous environment and impeccable service are just some of the many reasons to visit this soon-to-be retail hot spot. Along with her own custom designs, Alberts has gathered a veritable who’s who of coveted labels, including Mateo, Zoë Chicco, Adina Reyter, and Elizabeth Cole, to name a few. With the addition of a highly curated estate and antique jewelry collection, a plethora of home accessories, and one-of-a-kind gifts, there is no shortage of treasures to discover.

Yet another British invasion is coming this season, to the heart of Fulton Market District, with the opening of the latest UK hospitality import from the Hoxton Hotel chain: The Hoxton Chicago, the third hotel to be opened in North America by developer group Ennismore. Unlike its counterparts, however, the hotel will be the first from the brand to feature a rooftop pool, a wellness studio with mind-and-body programming, and a coworking space perfect for visitors and locals alike. With comfortable and stylish midcentury modern–style rooms featuring artwork curated by gallerists from local Johalla Projects, two fantastic restaurants, and an intimate cocktail lounge, we are sure this space is to become a firm favorite among even the most discerning guests.

The Ferrari Family Business https://dujour.com/cities/rick-mancuso-family-business-ferrari-lake-forest-chicago/ Thu, 07 Feb 2019 16:30:06 +0000 Carly Boers http://dujour.com/?p=100056 Meet the Mancuso family, operating the luxury Ferrari Lake Forest in Chicago

The post The Ferrari Family Business appeared first on DuJour.

Rick Mancuso’s three children—Adam, Nick, and Cassie—have chosen to follow in their father’s footsteps and continue in the family business. The Mancuso family operates the venerable Ferrari Lake Forest, a 70,000-square-foot dealership stocked with the rarest and most expensive sports cars in the world.

Rick, a race car driver and third-generation dealer, launched the company in 1981. It garnered a reputation as the Chicago area’s go-to for luxury automobiles—just ask Michael Jordan. The basketball legend, like many pro athletes, augmented his collection there. Six months ago, the Mancusos made the switch to Ferraris only, making them one of only four exclusive Ferrari dealers in North America: Nick, also a racer like his father, serves as general sales manager. Cassie, the marketing and events director, says, “We are an Italian family working with one of the greatest Italian brands in history. It’s a dream.” As for Dad, at age 71, he’s still loving the ride.

Meet Chicago’s Cocktail Connoisseur https://dujour.com/cities/wade-mcelroy-chicago-cocktail-guru-estereo-young-american/ Tue, 29 Jan 2019 16:00:15 +0000 Carly Boers http://dujour.com/?p=99890 See how Wade McElroy is reinventing Chicago's bar scene one hot spot at a time

The post Meet Chicago’s Cocktail Connoisseur appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Seven years ago, Wade McElroy made a career-defining leap. The Arizona native, who was working at The Dutch in SoHo, was visiting friends in Chicago when he took note of the Windy City’s fledgling cocktail scene. “I saw an opportunity to join a young and super-supportive hospitality community,” says the 33-year-old. “I also knew I could eventually leverage my experience in New York to open my own place.” Today, one mega-successful hospitality group and three (soon-to-be four) neighborhood hot spots later, it’s clear—Chicago was indeed calling his name.

With his business partner, Jeff Donahue, McElroy has unlocked the formula for the consummate corner bar. The key, he says, is unpretentiousness. Each spot—from Estereo’s cheery Latin American soundtrack to the come-as-you-are backyard spaces at Sportsman’s Club and Ludlow Liquors—
reflects McElroy’s jovial and breezy position.

Originality is the other ingredient in McElroy and Donahue’s anything-but-prototypical concepts. “We try to practice daily creativity,” he says, highlighting Sportsman’s Club’s cocktail offerings. The four-item roster is crafted nightly and influenced by anything from current events to weather. Estereo, an ode to the music and spirits of Latin America and the Caribbean, is a playful departure from Logan Square’s many cocktail destinations. With Ludlow Liquors, the duo’s first destination in the city, where stirred cocktails are poured by the ounce, the two men have transformed a nondescript Avondale corner.

This winter, the team debuts its much-anticipated second Logan Square project, Young American—a contemporary take on a tavern with an emphasis on great wines, seasonal cocktails from newly minted beverage director Julia McKinley (Lost Lake, Milk Room), and food with a healthy bent. After that for McElroy: a wintertime escape to Portugal. “Once we’re nice and settled into the opening, I guess I can give myself a little break,” he says.

Pitchfork Music Festival Highlights https://dujour.com/cities/chicago-pitchfork-music-festival-highlights-2018/ Tue, 24 Jul 2018 19:40:19 +0000 Kasey Caminiti http://dujour.com/?p=96328 This year's three-day festival included unforgettable performances from Chaka Khan, Tame Impala and Lauryn Hill

The post Pitchfork Music Festival Highlights appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Chicago is celebrated as a cultural hub that is rich in community pride and for good reason: the city is booming with talented artists. From newcomers to veterans in the music industry, Chicago has brought up some of the freshest voices and most unique performers over the years. This year, at Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival, held in Union Park, the lineup was stacked with local talent. Some of the newer Chicago artists included Kweku Collins, Ravyn Lenae and Saba. Although newer artists, the star power was palpable at all these sets. Rapper Kweku Collins rocked a custom-designed jersey by fellow Chicago local, cross stitch artist, Emma McKee aka @StitchGawd. McKee has cross stitched pieces for musicians and artists both in and outside Chicago, gaining fans in the form of Chance the Rapper, Smino and Major Lazer. On Friday, her piece for Collins read the lyrics to one of his biggest songs, “Stupid Rose,” which proved to be a massive crowd pleaser and sing-along.

Later on, Ravyn Lenae, a mere 19 years old, captured the audience’s attention from the Red Stage with her powerful range and dazzling sequined dress. With her microphone adorned in bright red, this young singer released such emotion and passion into her performance, no one was looking away for a moment.

The larger Chicago natives on this year’s lineup included Smino, Noname and of course, Chaka Khan. With iconic hits dating back to the late 1970s like “I’m Every Woman” and “Ain’t Nobody,” Khan delivered a nostalgic-filled performance featuring her in the spotlight but her back-up singers close behind her. Other top performers included Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett who performed several songs off her newest album, Tell Me How You Really Feel. Headliner Tame Impala offered an electric close out on Friday with a memorable light show and as frontman Kevin Parker mentioned, no rain!

Pitchfork prides itself on offering a range of musical genres, from punk rockers Japandroids (who created a magical mosh pit during their Sunday performance) to epic hip-hop sensation Ms. Lauryn Hill. Hill headlined the final day of the festival in honor of the 20th anniversary of her first and only solo album, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. Though Hill has garnered a less-than-amazing reputation for arriving late for shows, leaving certain hits out of the set list and sometimes not showing up at all, Hill came to the Green Stage at Pitchfork 20 minutes late and performed almost the entire album. The 43-year-old New Jersey native left out her cover of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” but she stayed on stage for nearly 20 minutes longer than her cut-off time, so overall, the crowd was satisfied. Who really wants to be the one to kick Lauryn Hill off the stage, anyway?

Click through the gallery above for a look at some of the performers from Pitchfork Music Festival 2018.

This Chicago Chef Has an Appetite for Success https://dujour.com/cities/chicago-iron-chef-stephanie-izard/ Thu, 19 Jul 2018 16:00:38 +0000 Carly Boers http://dujour.com/?p=96072 Iron Chef Stephanie Izard is expanding her culinary empire with a new restaurant announcement and more

The post This Chicago Chef Has an Appetite for Success appeared first on DuJour.

With the imminent launch of her prepared foods and condiment line, plans to start on her third cookbook, and a new restaurant announcement coming soon, Stephanie Izard is not about to take a summer break. But along with the rest of us, she’s soaking up these fleeting mild days. “[My husband] Gary and I have people over for grill-outs all the time,” says Izard, the toque behind Chicago eateries Girl & the Goat, Little Goat and Duck Duck Goat.

A James Beard Award winner and the first female Iron Chef, Izard’s recently released cookbook, Gather & Graze, has an entire chapter devoted to cooking over live flame and includes fan favorites such as banh mi burgers and Kalbi beef ribs. “It is really my favorite part of the book,” admits the chef, who is partial to late-season sweet corn on the cob.

In addition to her three restaurants, Izard is also training for a sprint triathlon and has a two-year-old son to chase after, but Chicago’s most industrious chef is relishing the city’s summer vibes. “The restaurants are so much more lively with the patios open and all the folks out enjoying the West Loop,” she says. “Chicago really comes to life in the summer.”

The Food Halls Craze Takes Chicago https://dujour.com/cities/food-halls-chicago-revival-forum-55-wells-st-market/ Wed, 04 Apr 2018 15:00:58 +0000 Carly Boers http://dujour.com/?p=93714 Check out the best, most spacious food emporiums Chicago has to offer

The post The Food Halls Craze Takes Chicago appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Whether you trace the food hall trend back to recent coastal iterations in New York and L.A., or all the way back to its deep roots in medieval Europe, you can’t deny it’s finally arrived in Chicago. Ignited by the success of Revival Food Hall, which houses barbecue mecca Smoque and James Beard–winner Mindy Segal’s Hot Chocolate Bakery, the local food hall scene has already spawned forthcoming copycats like Forum 55, which opened last fall with high-profile concepts including a barbecue joint from Food Network star Jeff Mauro and a premium sandwich counter compliments of the Butcher & Larder. Wells St. Market followed with cheeky offerings like Piggy Smalls, an authentic take on Greek street food.

And there’s no sign of these communal destinations slowing down. In fact, the next development will come from an unlikely yet famously reliable source: London-based, taste-making media company Time Out Group, publisher of the Chicago edition of Time Out. Next year, it will unveil a tri-level, 600-seat food hall in Fulton Market featuring a collection of local purveyors curated by the magazine’s editorial staff. With the star-power of big-name chefs and the enthusiastic patronage of locals and tourists alike, it appears the food hall trend has plenty more courses to come.

Meet a Tastemaker With an Eye for Talent https://dujour.com/cities/chicago/heiji-choy-black-fashion-tastemaker-chicago-magazine/ Wed, 28 Mar 2018 16:00:21 +0000 Samuel Anderson http://dujour.com/?p=93678 Meet Heiji Choy Black, the mother of four who helped discover Virgil Abloh

The post Meet a Tastemaker With an Eye for Talent appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
If “having it all” is an art, Heiji Choy Black is a master; the entrepreneur and tastemaker lives in a dream apartment overlooking Lincoln Park with her husband (hedge-fund manager Brian Black) and four kids, while serving on the boards of some of Chicago’s best cultural institutions. But like any great master, Black knows how to reinvent herself. In her nearly 20 years in the city, she’s also owned Chicago’s hippest store, the directional boutique Hejfina, and Chicago’s chicest job, Style Editor for Chicago magazine. Through it all, Black’s most valuable asset has also been an intangible one: her eye.

It was her eye that drew her here in the first place; while on a business trip from New York, the beauty of the city’s architecture against Lake Michigan was enough for her to change careers and relocate simultaneously. “I had been working as a consultant in corporate America,” she recalls. “It was a bit of a transition, but a very happy one.” In 2004, she opened Hejfina, a concept lifestyle store cast in the image of Europe and Asia’s museum-quality boutiques. “I grew up going to Seoul, Korea, where they have these concept lifestyle stores, and I’ve always been obsessed with stores like Colette in Paris,” she says.

Black stocked the store with then–fellow fashion hopefuls like Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone, as well as boldface imports like Comme des Garçons. Ahead of its time for Windy City retail (Rei Kawakubo’s conceptually similar Dover Street Market opened in London the same year), the store predated the exaltation of the cult brand. In fact, reigning cult designer Virgil Abloh passed through the House of Hejfina long before the rise of Off-White. “I enlisted design students to propose designs to the store,” Black says, “And one of them was Virgil. I ended up passing on [his design], but we became good friends and collaborators.”

After a successful five-year run, the store closed in 2009. A stint as Chicago magazine’s Style Editor followed but since 2016, Black has taken a step back from fashion to focus on art and architecture. While serving on the boards of the Renaissance Society and the Architecture & Design Society, Black and her husband Brian have added local Chicago art stars like William J. O’Brien and Theaster Gates to their personal collection.

Now, Black says, she’s ready for a fashion comeback: “I’m working on a business more in-depth in 2018 that’s design- and fashion-related.” She may have it all, but with an eagle eye like Black’s, there’s always more waiting to be discovered.

Meet the Smithe Sisters https://dujour.com/cities/chicago/walter-e-smithe-furniture-company-chicago/ Fri, 24 Nov 2017 17:00:24 +0000 Editors of DuJour http://dujour.com/?p=90600 The new generation is shaking things up at furniture icon Walter E. Smithe

The post Meet the Smithe Sisters appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
With a 71-year history and 11 stores sprinkled throughout Chicago and the suburbs, Walter E. Smithe is a local furniture icon. Since 1945, the company has established itself as a reliable family-run retailer, with the second- and third-generation Smithe men at the helm. But now a new generation—sisters Meghan, Colleen, Maureen, and Caitie Smithe—is shaking things up in a big way.

The Smithe sisters, all in their thirties, worked in the family business as teens but pursued different career paths in adulthood. By last year, though, each had returned to the company their great-grandfather founded. “We all trickled back in, and it happened really organically,” says Meghan of the industrious quartet, who collectively has 17 children.

While their father and grandfather are still actively involved in the day-to-day, the women have taken over the company’s marketing, design, advertising and buying efforts—and immediately went about altering brand perceptions. “Nothing is left unchanged,” Meghan notes.

The first order of business: ditch the longstanding, highly recognizable ad campaign featuring their father and two uncles. “It worked really well for a long time, but post-recession, we saw people’s sensibilities had changed,” says Meghan. “Customers were more concerned with what we were selling versus the people who were selling it,” she adds. The new campaign, dubbed “Smithe Family Makeovers,” showcases Smithe furniture in the
homes of actual clients, revealing the handiwork of the company’s designers in HGTV-esque episodes.

The Smithe sisters are working to expose the brand to a new customer base

The campaign was inspired in part by a partnership with designer/house-flipper Jeff Lewis of the Bravo show Flipping Out. Lewis teamed up with Smithe’s merchandising team to create in-store vignettes, and also featured the store on his show. Additional partnerships with the likes of Cynthia Rowley and Ellen Degeneres have exposed the company to a new customer base.

“My sisters and I represent the viewpoint of our younger clientele,” Meghan says. But she’s quick to point out that the business is still very much a multigenerational effort, noting that their 81-year-old grandfather still regularly meets with clients. “We feel like we can now speak to the multitude of generations who shop with us,” she says.

The Foodie’s Guide to Chicago’s Coolest Neighborhoods https://dujour.com/cities/chicago/food-guide-to-chicago-wicker-park-west-loop-logan-square/ Tue, 29 Aug 2017 17:30:29 +0000 Claire Volkman http://dujour.com/?p=88264 A detailed guide to the restaurant city of the year

The post The Foodie’s Guide to Chicago’s Coolest Neighborhoods appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Once a city most known for its stick-to-your-gut deep-dish pizza and loaded hot dogs, Chicago’s gastronomic star is rapidly rising; in August, it was named the best restaurant city in the country by Bon Appétit. While it is undoubtedly deserving of that accolade, the city is also defined by its neighborhoods, each with its own unique flavor. So before you embark on a full-blown culinary pilgrimage, it’s helpful to break the city down by bite-sized hubs. Herein, a guide to Chicago’s most foodie-friendly neighborhoods, from up-and-coming Wicker Park to long-running Logan Square.

West Loop

It’s impossible to go anywhere in the West Loop without someone name-dropping Bad Hunter, whose vegetarian-inspired menu has taken the city by storm. Thanks to heavy-hitting plant-based dishes like white corn grits with confit fava beans and charred squash paired with brown butter farmers cheese, not to mention punchy cocktails like the Cosmo made with fresh berries and Campari, this buzzworthy eatery is bound to be more than a flash in the pan.

Few places embody Chicago fine dining quite like Oriole. The 28-seat dining room, tucked in a nondescript building in this once-industrial neighborhood, is tasting menu only – but you wouldn’t want to order any other way. Chef and owner Noah Sandoval’s dishes bring seasonality and style to a whole new level – like the golden Osetra caviar and coconut dashi or the Hudson Valley foie gras topped with a scallops, dried blueberry and oxalis.

Oriole

Oriole

One of 2017’s most talked about openings, Smyth & the Loyalist offers guests two distinct game plans: one a multicourse tasting menu in the tony upstairs dining room of Smyth, the other a laidback, burger-friendly atmosphere downstairs at the Loyalist. Don’t leave either without trying a cocktail – like the Brown Dog, made with tequila and white vermouth and dusted with pine pollen.

Smyth & the Loyalist

Smyth & the Loyalist

Avec’s small, communal dining room specializes in Mediterranean food with a Midwestern twist. With dishes like pork shoulder and squid ink stew, the dinner menu is nothing to shrug at, but it’s the brunch that has made this spot an institution. On Saturdays and Sundays, you’ll find a line of hungover locals waiting over an hour for a bite of signature wood-oven baked French toast.

Wicker Park/Bucktown

The restaurant formerly known as Trencherman is now Trench, a cozy, white-walled space that’s more neighborhood friendly than the original. While it boasts a fresh, more youthful interior, the eatery’s updated menu is really what brought the locals back. For brunch, go with biscuits and gravy or brioche French toast, and for dinner, you can’t go wrong with the soft burrata and heirloom tomatoes.

Paying homage to San Francisco (but with a welcoming Midwestern vibe), Presidio is a hidden gem in a refurbished brick building. Known for the cocktails (and distinctive menus, hand-drawn by a local artist), the lounge is consistently abuzz, shaking it up with travel-inspired drinks like the Cachaça and watermelon spritzer from Brazil.

At first glance, you might think Dove’s Luncheonette was a retro American diner, but one look at the menu and there’s no mistaking its provenance. In the Americana-themed dining room, chef Dennis Burnard serves up incredible Southwest-infused Mexican food like barbacoa enchiladas with slow-roasted beef chuck and spicy pozole rojo with crispy pig ears – along with a giant selection of imported tequilas.

A relatively new addition, Publican Anker boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and epic people watching. You’ll find a lighter menu than at its sister restaurant, Publican, with a more focus on vegetables and fish. In addition to lighter fare like the smoked mackerel or the golden beet salad with pistachios, you’ll also find a few meat-centric dishes like pork collar with green tomato chow chow.

Logan Square:

Giant is easily one of the area’s most talked-about restaurants thanks to its mix of gourmet and comfort. Don’t miss the house made tagliatelle with king crab and chili butter and the spiced onion rings, but save room for the little biscuit, a silk-soft morsel served with jalapeño butter.

Giant

Giant

No place in Chicago showcases the evolution of the city’s culinary identity like Fat Rice, which offers up a unique spin on one of the Windy City’s trademarks: the hot dog. They reimagine the street food as chunks of Vienna beef hot dog, hot peppers, celery seeds and mustard inside a sweet Portuguese roll. Dogs aside, the sardine escabeche and curried lamb rice noodles are can’t-miss.

With its low-key, flannel-clad clientele, Longman & Eagle is arguably one of the most relaxed Michelin star winners in town. The food looks like pub fare but tastes high end, like the beef fat fries with dill pickle aioli or gnocchi with goat ragu. Or you can go full grunge with their famous PBR breakfast, served with two eggs, house potatoes, bacon and a can of the classic hipster libation.

Lincoln Park:

Summerhouse Santa Monica does a nearly perfect impression of California cuisine, minus the warm weather all year round. But with a seasonal menu full of irresistible bites – from the basic (but delicious) avocado toast to the unexpected Idaho rainbow trout served with a side of mashed tots – this bright and airy restaurant, including its outdoor patio, is nearly always full – even in winter.

Summer House

Summer House

A neighborhood favorite 10 years running, Boka reflects chef Lee Wolen’s pride in local ingredients and artistic presentation. The heirloom tomatoes, for example, are served with fresh herb garnishes and striking black garlic and plums. Although most dishes are served a-la-carte, the waiters and chef recommend the 9-course tasting menu, comprised of a sampling of each the chef’s picks.

Boka

Boka

What’s an affluent neighborhood without an oyster bar? Besides fresh caught, cold-water oysters, the New England-themed Oyster Bah’s specialties include an innovative take on a lobster roll stuffed with crab, mayo and shrimp, and famed Old Bay-seasoned boardwalk fries. The best part? You can nosh on all of it over a 40-oz. of rosé. It just doesn’t get any better.

How to Experience Lollapalooza in Style https://dujour.com/cities/lollapalooza-music-festival-vip-platinum-experiences/ Tue, 01 Aug 2017 15:00:40 +0000 Kasey Caminiti http://dujour.com/?p=87527 Take advantage of all the perks from swanky Lolla Lounges to access to exclusive viewing areas

The post How to Experience Lollapalooza in Style appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
It doesn’t matter if a festival has been around for 26 years (Lollapalooza) or two (Panorama): all festivals have their pros and cons. There will be a moment when you’re craving a delicious craft brew but are disheartened by the seemingly endless queue. Alternatively, there may also be a moment when your newly discovered-turned-favorite band of all time is playing an afternoon set and you’re able to sneak to the front of a barely-there crowd, enjoying what feels like an intimate performance for you and only you. Or, you’ll get to experience a pro/con combination when someone in your group lets their phone die–despite you encouraging everyone to utilize battery saving mode–leading to their disappearance for a few hours, followed by a heroic reemergence at an epic set by Radiohead.

There are both pros and cons to attending a festival, but the latter can easily be avoided. Simply put, instead of having to endure a long line for an underwhelming burger, or protecting your phone’s battery as if it were a prized jewel: upgrade

Chicago’s Lollapalooza is one of the few festivals that seems to understand the importance of offering an upgraded experience–two experiences, to be exact. Guests can either opt in to the VIP or Platinum packages, which include perks like multi-level viewing platforms in VIP and reserved front row areas for Platinum guests. This year, Platinum ticket holders will have the opportunity to watch sets from side-stage viewing platforms on the main stages, giving you the chance to actually see the artists perform, as opposed to watching the screen from the back of the crowd.

VIP & Platinum Manager Courtney Murphy gave DuJour the inside scoop saying, “Our VIP Lolla Lounges offer a laid-back vibe. It’s more chilled out and very amenity-driven.” She continues to describe the Platinum experience which is Lollapalooza’s next-level program, saying, “It is exclusive, elevated and truly a rockstar experience. Guests can get up-close and personal to their favorite artists on all of the main stages. Plus, we are offering meet and greets with the artists for the first time.” Obviously the music is a priority at Lollapalooza, so having exclusive viewing access is key and with the new addition of artist meet and greets in Platinum, you can get even closer than you thought possible.

Lollapalooza in Grant Park 2016
Credit: Roger Ho/Lollapalooza 2016

Entering the festival that hosts upwards of 300,000 attendees every year can be time consuming and cut into your time exploring Grant Park or even performances. VIP and Platinum ticket holders will enjoy the luxury of more convenient and dedicated entry lanes to avoid the crowds, and both upgrades offer access to golf cart transportation to navigate Grant Park (which is one mile end-to-end). Murphy makes it a point to mention that there will be more golf carts dedicated solely to the Platinum guests, which has limited capacity, ensuring those elite guests receive the most personal attention.

And as for sustenance, VIPs will have a shaded bar in the Lolla Lounge North serving artisanal cocktails and beers. Platinum ticket holders can indulge in daily happy hours, champagne and a Tito’s Bloody Mary Bar every morning. How to Spread Love at Lollapalooza https://dujour.com/cities/titos-love-mural-bunker-lab-at-lollapalooza/ Mon, 31 Jul 2017 17:00:32 +0000 Kasey Caminiti http://dujour.com/?p=87511 How Tito’s Handmade Vodka will donate up to $10,000 to help veterans across the globe

With more and more music festivals incorporating philanthropy into their programming, the power of the platform to spread positive vibes is growing every year. From Firefly fundraising for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to Coachella implementing sustainability initiatives like an “energy playground” and a recycling store, festivals are rocking out while giving back.

This year, Chicago’s iconic Lollapalooza music festival is doing its part by hosting a Tito’s Handmade Vodka social media campaign that will donate $10,000 to veterans. The campaign is in partnership with Bunker Labs, a non-profit program dedicated to helping military veterans start and grow their businesses.

Here’s how it works: Lollapalooza attendees will snap a photo in front of the “#LoveTitos” installation and share it on social media using the #LoveTitos hashtag. For every post, Tito’s will donate $1 up to Bunker Labs until the goal of $10,000 is met.

Tito’s Love Mural at Lollapalooza

“Music festivals present a unique opportunity for us to connect with our fans and give back at the same time,” says Zack Flores, Director of Programs at Tito’s. “Our goal with #LoveTitos and our partnership with Bunker Labs is to highlight, educate and encourage fans to spread the love within their communities.”

The partnership offers a simple way to give back while enjoying spirited festival fun. After all, who doesn’t love a refreshing Tito’s cocktail coupled with a super like-able Instagram? While Lollapalooza‘s lineup, which includes The Killers, Lorde, and Cage the Elephant, will offer plenty of Instagram opportunities, the “#LoveTitos” installation is the only one sure to give good karma in return.

The man behind celebrated haunts like chef Stephanie Izard’s Girl & the Goat launches his 18th restaurant, The Bellemore, this season. Here are his favorite spots in Chi-Town.

Power Lunch: Sumi Robata Bar serves superauthentic, robatayaki in a small, discreet setting. Chef Gene Kato’s food is always beautiful and served with laser precision.

Date Night: My favorite restaurant in the world, Alinea, accomplishes the rare feat of providing theatrics, hospitality and some of the best-tasting food on the planet.

Retail Therapy: My house is pretty modern, so I like to balance that with items that are weird and vintage. I can find both at Architectural Artifacts, where it’s easy to kill hours.

Field Trip: Steppenwolf Theatre’s ensemble cast has an embarrassment of riches, and some of its premieres, like August Osage County, have gone on to worldwide fame.

Here, we take a closer look at The Windy City’s top rated hotels, bars and shops. Be sure to stop at these hot-spots on your next weekend trip to Chicago, Illinois.

Where to Stay:

The Gold Coast’s iconic Talbott Hotel debuts a luxurious new look following a recent $20 million face-lift. After breaking a sweat in the just-added fitness center, there’s no finer place to unwind than a Studio King (one of 178 refreshed accommodations), an oversize corner room neatly tucked away from the urban bustle.

Talbott Hotel

Where to Shop:

Birdseye Rule lends a feminine touch to Logan Square’s shopping scene. Helmed by a pair of sisters, the boutique takes its name from a beloved childhood summer vacation spot in northwest Michigan. Those sunny memories inspire the shop’s carefully curated collection of home goods, heritage-style women’s sportswear and rugged accessories for men. Over on the Mag Mile, California-based Les Lunes brings its ethically-sourced apparel to the Midwest. The collection includes women’s ready-to-wear, lounge- and activewear and men’s underwear—all in ultrasoft bamboo-based fabric.

Where to Eat and Drink:

They run one of the country’s most beloved tiki bars, so it’s no surprise that Paul McGee and Shelby Allison throw a flawless backyard cocktail party. “Lost Lake is a tropical party that happens nightly, and I use the same approach at home,” says Allison. From McGee’s annual birthday bash to impromptu campfire chill-outs, the quaint, peony-lined backyard of the couple’s Logan Square greystone buzzes all summer long. McGee says it’s a reprieve from his typical post behind Lost Lake’s bar. “We can relax more in our backyard—it doesn’t matter if there’s a straw on the ground,” he says. In fact, Allison and McGee let their friends do the bartending when they’re off the clock. “I set up a make-your-own drink station and let our guests get to work,” she says. McGee concurs: “It’s interactive, and allows Shelby and me to mingle.”

Lost Lake

What to Do:

Wrigley Field is not just the home of baseball’s world champs—the stadium also hosts a hefty concert lineup (10 shows this season), with James Taylor, Billy Joel, Lady Gaga and Zac Brown Band on the bill.

Takashi Murakami’s Psychedelic Vision Invades Chicago https://dujour.com/cities/takashi-murakamis-psychedelic-vision-invades-chicago/ Mon, 05 Jun 2017 21:00:03 +0000 Samuel Anderson http://dujour.com/?p=86148 The pop artist's new retrospective at Chicago’s MCA marks his first in 10 years

The post Takashi Murakami’s Psychedelic Vision Invades Chicago appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami’s psychedelic color schemes and cartoonish surrealism display a kind of eye-popping sensory overload, so it figures that at the opening of Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art on Saturday, the art was just one of several sources of stimuli. In addition to soaking in over 30 years of Murakami’s genre-bending work, guests snacked on Murakami-inspired octopus sushi rolls and watched a performance by fellow artistic renegade Janelle Monáe.

The show marks Murakami’s first North American retrospective in 10 years as well as the MCA’s fiftieth anniversary. The artist, donning an on-brand octopus hat, personally greeted arriving guests, who included Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Nick Cave and Larry Gagosian.

Murakami’s oeuvre, defined by an artistic philosophy known as “Superflat” that mixes “high” and “low” art, is one of the most valuable and provocative of any living artist; his NSFW sculpture, “My Lonesome Cowboy,” sold in 2008 for a reported $15 million. His high-profile collaborations, such as a 2014 music video for Pharrell Williams’s, “It Girl,” are known for being commercial yet sneakily subversive. As for his tentacle-themed blowout at MCA, which raised $3 million in museum funds, it seems Murakami’s grip on combining the high and the low is tighter than ever.

The post Dancers in the White City appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Seeing The Nutcracker is as much of a Chicago holiday tradition as watching the tree lighting ceremony in Daley Plaza. But while the 55-foot evergreen’s decor changes each year, the whimsical ballet production has stayed steadfast—until now. This holiday season, the Joffrey Ballet will showcase an entirely new adaptation of the classic tale (December 10–30). Instead of the traditional 19th–century parlor setting, the Joffrey rendition will take place at Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair, the legendary event that transformed the White City. The $4 million production is the brainchild of 2015 Tony award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, known for his work on the Broadway hit An American in Paris, which he also directed. Ashley Wheater, the Joffrey’s artistic director, knows Wheeldon was the right person to reinvent the timeless classic while retaining its magic. “I’ve danced in many Nutcrackers through the years and understand the power of a good story,” says Wheater. “But we live in a diverse and rapidly changing world. Our storytelling must recognize these changes.”

It’s hard to believe, but Italian jewelry house Buccellati has had its home on Oak Street for almost three years now. Though its ornate two-level boutique in the former Esquire Theatre space—with walls covered in Italian silk, hand-carved paneling and a stunning Venetian chandelier—was in great condition, it recently underwent a face-lift to make room for the brand’s new Opera collection and additions to its iconic Hawaii and Macri lines.

But don’t worry: The jewelry cases (with new, top-of-the-line lighting) are still filled with the company’s unique handmade jewels, elegant watches and other high-end, one-of-kind pieces. “Chicagoans have been collecting Buccellati for years,” says Andrea Buccellati, the third-generation president and co-creative director. “We are excited to offer a carefully curated selection to discerning clients with true appreciation for Buccellati designs and craftsmanship.”

Les Néréides

We didn’t know much about the Parisian jewelry line Les Néréides before it opened its first U.S. store right here in the Loop. But upon stepping inside the charming space, we were hooked on the bold brooches, flirty necklaces, conversation-starting earrings and other fun and colorful costume baubles. “We chose Chicago for its energetic, cosmopolitan vibe,” says co-owner Jessica Knopf. “This season, two of our most popular collections have been the Winter Roses and the Fantasy Gardens. Both incorporate beautiful flowers and other nature elements.”

Her industrial-meets-elegant M2057 store carries tailored dresses, flattering coats, colorful tops and much more, including a selection of artisan jewelry and belts from designers like Johnny Farah and Diana Broussard. “I feel that I am in exactly the right place—as my life evolves, so too does my work,” says Pinto. “This year, I’ll celebrate 25 years in fashion design, yet creating each new collection is as exciting as designing that very first one.”

The post The Perfect Party Space in Chicago appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
There’s a new hot spot in town. Chicago’s own entertaining whiz Debi Lilly recently opened a loft above her A Perfect Event retail space and office. The all-white, second-level Lakeview venue—named DL Loft—is set up like a Paris apartment, with gilded French mirrors, tufted wing chairs and hundreds of pieces of crystal barware that Lilly herself brought home from twice-a-year trips to French flea markets.

Debi Lilly

“We wanted to create the modern-day turn-of-the-century Paris salon—a community space to gather to celebrate, share ideas, enjoy life, share the happy,” explains Lilly. “And it’s even more fabulous than we dreamed, watching memories made and milestones cherished in our cozy, intimate ‘home.’” Since its opening, DL Loft has hosted chefs’ dinners in the gourmet kitchen, birthday parties, baby showers, small weddings and even overnights for up to six guests. Chicago has never felt more like Paris.

Maple & Ash
Steakhouse Maple & Ash, which just debuted in the former Hunt Club space, is about as Gold Coast as you can get. Our favorite on the menu is the dry-aged ribeye, but don’t miss the sophisticated wine program and innovative cocktails from award-winning sommelier Belinda Chang. The two-level restaurant boasts a wood-burning hearth that plays an integral role in both the décor and the classic yet eclectic menu. “Our kitchen is centered around a 12-foot wood-fired hearth, so each guest should try something cooked on the fire,” suggests partner Brian O’Connor. “I recommend our towers of grilled shellfish—the heat and smoke bring out so much flavor and are perfect to share at the table.”

8 West Maple Street; mapleandash.com

Punt & Plume’s Wine Selection

Punt & Plume
Along with two partners, Daniel Allen, the longtime owner of Lincoln Park’s now-closed Black Duck Tavern, has opened a wine and cigar shop called Punt & Plume in West Lincoln Park. The intimate space sells artisan wine, premium cigars, local spirits, craft beer, charcuterie and cheese. There’s even a large, custom-built walk-in cedar humidor in the rear of the shop. So what convinced Allen and his partners to open? “After two decades in the restaurant industry, it was time to venture into something new,” he says. “I had the fortunate opportunity to partner with wine and cigar aficionado Douglas Geyer to fill a need in this neighborhood. Our shop really emphasizes personal attention in a cool, custom-designed atmosphere.”

The post The Secrets of a Restaurant Interior Designer appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Interior designer Karen Herold has had a hand in crafting top eateries like Girl & the Goat and GT Fish & Oyster. She struck out on her own with her Studio K firm and is working on GT Prime, as well as a factory design for Vosges Haut Chocolat.

What’s the best thing about working in Chicago?
“We are in the world of restaurant design and Chicago is becoming the place for the best culinary excellence.”

What makes your work distinctive?
“From an aesthetic point of view, our work expresses a passion for honest materials. We tend to layer lots of textures of natural wood, leather and plaster to create a warm environment that makes people want to come back.”

GT Fish & Oyster

Inside GT Fish & Oyster

What do you consider the most important elements of a restaurant’s design?
“Lighting and sound largely contribute to the levels of energy in every space. Besides that, it needs to be comfortable. We always choose comfort over ‘wow’ moments.”

What’s your favorite space in the city?
“It might sound cheesy, but right now my favorite place is my own office. We have all worked so hard to turn our office into a comfortable and laid-back space, and this is my home away from home.”

What are you currently craving?
“A Picante de la Casa cocktail (Cazadores reposado, lime, agave, chili and cilantro) on the roof at the new Soho House and the bacon-wrapped dates at Avec.”

The post Inside Chicago’s Lacuna Artist Lofts appeared first on DuJour.

The Lacuna Artist Lofts in Pilsen is the vision and personal project of Joey Cacciatore. Cacciatore’s father, a Chicago real estate tycoon, purchased the building in 1985, and what was once the world’s largest macaroni factory has now been transformed into a multipurpose cultural arts center and venue.

Cacciatore started the business in 2009 upon finishing college. The tenants were initially artists and fashion-focused companies, but the building now plays host to a variety of businesses.

The massive 250,000 square-foot area boasts 156 studios, event space, a rooftop, an upcoming restaurant and the Remix Project, an alternative art school for underserved young creatives. And visitors don’t have to look far to catch a glimpse of the tenants’ work. The wide hallways are full of large-scale pieces. Neon signs, paintings, artwork done directly on the walls and sculptures are all around.

Cacciatore is more than just a landlord. His artistic sensibilities can be seen in the structure and décor of the building. He has an eye for design and has been extremely creative in utilizing repurposed materials in the process—one example being the bathrooms in the bridal suite, which were built out of shipping containers. He even purchased a CTA train, utilizing the seats in one of the Remix Project classrooms.

Rare Jewels Land in the Windy City https://dujour.com/cities/graff-diamonds-chicago-tenth-anniversary-jewelry-collection-pictures/ Tue, 16 Dec 2014 20:48:06 +0000 Mackenzie Nielson http://dujour.com/?p=51579 Graff Diamonds Chicago celebrates its ten-year anniversary with an astonishing collection of never-before-seen pieces

]]>
Only a select few jewelers can stand the test of time, and it’s more than clear that Graff is at the pinnacle. Involved in every stage of the jewelry-making process, Graff pushes the boundaries of innovation and excellence.

“I’m extremely proud of the achievements of Graff Chicago, our Midwest flagship store,” said Henri Barguirdjian, Graff’s President and CEO of the Americas. The luxury brand celebrated its anniversary by welcoming a grand collection of exquisite and rare jewels from London. “Each piece has been very carefully selected,” said Eve Rogers, Director of Graff Chicago.

Many of the pieces are being displayed in the United States for the first time ever; some were adorning the necks and wrists of live models outfitted in Lanvin gowns, while others rested in glass cases. Ranging from striking Burmese cabochon sapphires to beautiful and bold diamonds to delicate emeralds set in an Art Deco design, the collection is nothing short of astonishing.

The Graff jewels will be on display, and available to purchase, during the month of December.

Shopping for Children in Chi-Town https://dujour.com/cities/chicago/best-chicago-childrens-stores-kids/ Tue, 08 Jul 2014 20:55:16 +0000 Kayleen Schaefer http://dujour.com/?post_type=articles&p=45406 Your guide to Chicago's very best stores for kids

The post Shopping for Children in Chi-Town appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
With its famous deep-dish pizza and hot dogs on practically every corner, Chicago is already a kid’s kind of town. Still, these stores, which are tricked out with a milk and cookie bar, a massive toy train and the best selection of organic baby goods around, will make the shopping experience even better for the entire family.

Heritage Littles

In this bright, brick-walled shop—decorated with a teepee and pull wagon—owners Mike and Melissa Salvatore custom-build Bennett Balance Bikes (made from recycled milk jugs) for kids nine months and up. Also on sale are made-to-last helmets, bells and baskets. Beyond bikes, there’s a well-stocked milk and cookies bar and in-house photo studio (Melissa is also a children’s photographer).

2868 N. Lincoln Ave., heritagelittles.com, 773-242-9008

Frankie’s On The Park

Frankie’s is a tween shop as sophisticated as any adult boutique. In a modern, minimalist building in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, owners Lisa Rolfe Burik and Mary DeRose Carter stock Splendid, JBrand, Chaser LA and Ragdolls & Rockets, as well as their own Chicago-produced formalwear line 4th Charm. The hunt for an ideal dress for bat mitzvahs, graduations or school dances ends here.

2322 North Clark St., frankiesonthepark.com, 773.248.0400

Red Balloon

Open since 1998, this stalwart children’s furniture store is known for its handmade, personalized wares, including their signature decoupage toy chests and hand-painted music boxes. More ways to trick-out your kid’s room include height charts and wall clocks that you can get emblazoned with their name. Or, if you’re searching for something more suitcase-sized, they also sell superhero capes.

1940 N. Damen Avenue, theredballoon.com, 773.489.9800

Sprout

The Chicago location of this San Francisco standout stocks the same top-shelf natural and organic children’s gear, including baby shampoos, clothing, toys, crib mattresses and other nursery items. Choose from noted nontoxic brands such as Duc Duc, Kate Quinn Organics, Oeuf, Bloombaby and Nook. And, if you’re lucky, you might show up for one of Sprout’s widely praised story hours or music classes.

1943 West Division St., sproutsanfrancisco.com773-489-0009

Oakridge Hobbies & Toys

Often called “kid heaven,” this football field-sized family-owned shop—where a toy train chugs around a ceiling-mounted track—sells both ready-to-go toys (they have the largest selection of stuffed animals in the Chicago area) and DIY kits of all kinds. Whatever the hobby, supplies abound, including sets for model trains, dollhouses, remote-controlled helicopters and racing cars.

The Melmans Are Coming https://dujour.com/cities/chicago/new-melmans-restaurants-in-chicago-bub-city/ Tue, 16 Jul 2013 00:00:00 +0000 The Editors Of DuJour http://www.dujour.com/article/new-melmans-restaurants-in-chicago-bub-city/ Three new ventures from the heirs to one of Chicago's most successful restaurant groups

The post The Melmans Are Coming appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Jerrod, Molly and R.J. Melman are more than the heirs to Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, a group of wildly successful restaurants started by their father, Rich Melman. They’re entrepreneurs in their own right who’ve opened one winning spot after another, from Hub 51 to Paris Club to RPM Italian. They talked to DuJour about their most recent ventures, Bub City (pictured) and Three Dots and a Dash, as well as RPM Steak, which is slated to start up this fall.

Tell us what led you to open Bub City.
RJ: It was originally a large BBQ place our father owned from 1989 to 1998. Over time, we got so many requests to reopen it. About a year ago, we wanted to start working on a BBQ restaurant, and we created our own Bub City.
J: When we think about our childhoods and our father’s places, Bub City always stood out. After we opened Paris Club and RPM Italian, we wanted to create a hangout for ourselves. We hooked up with this great mixologist, Paul McGee [of the Whistler], for the cocktails and worked with chef Doug Psaltis on the food.

What was the inspiration for your new tiki lounge, Three Dots and a Dash?
J: It came out of Paul McGee’s passion for tiki drinks. That culture has faded away, and we wanted to pay tribute to what tiki was and also move it into the 21st century.
RJ: Tiki’s gotten a bad name, and most of the drinks are made from mixes. We’re reviving what was great about them: fresh juices, great rums and syrups.

Your restaurants are all hits. What’s the secret?
RJ: We always start with being inspired by great food, and then we develop a concept around it, looking for holes in the market.
J: All of our restaurants in Chicago are within walking distance of each other. Since it’s the neighborhood where we live and go out, we know what’s missing. So we saw there were no places with live country music that served great BBQ, which is what we’re doing at Bub City.

What’s the best advice your father gave you?
M: Our dad told us to find our passion and then work our hardest at it. There was never any pressure to work in the restaurant business because he wanted us to do what we love. I tried other things, like teaching kindergarten, but never loved them. When I started in restaurants, I realized I loved going to work.

The enthusiastic audience of photographers, stylists, writers and style-savvy Chicagoans—including Heiji Choy Black, Corri McFadden, Ahmed Braimah and Emily Fiffer—enjoyed coffee and quiche as Schuman described his work methods and the secrets of his success. Every guest received a copy of Schuman’s new book, Closer, and they queued up afterward to shake his hand and get his autograph.

Chicago’s Ever-Expanding Retail Scene https://dujour.com/cities/chicago/chicago-new-stores-shopping-gold-coast/ Wed, 17 Apr 2013 00:00:00 +0000 The Editors Of DuJour http://www.dujour.com/article/chicago-new-stores-shopping-gold-coast/ There have been hints of an Oak Street/Gold Coast revival over the past two years, and it's finally in full swing.

In October, Emporio Armani (25 E. Oak St., pictured left) opened, featuring a sweeping staircase and two stories of black and silvery space to house the big brand’s diffusion line for men and women.

Lanvin (116 E. Oak St.) swung its doors open, after nearly a year of anticipation.

The Zaharoff (110 E. Oak St. ) flagship comes with a large-scale mural—and tailored suits, ties and shirts for the classic gentleman—while Gallery Aesthete (46 E. Oak St., pictured right) brings men an avant-garde space filled with Comme des Garçons, Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester.

One block south on Walton, here’s hoping the third time’s the charm for Sofia (100 E. Walton St.), the vintage, indie, local—and beloved—designer’s women’s shop that has once again resettled.

Brit-based Eskandar (70 E. Walton St., pictured left) ushered in luxe and clean-lined looks with its new store, as well as a varied selection of housewares and accessories.

Just north of Oak on North Rush, an impressive two-level Starbucks—there’s booze at the bar upstairs—has emerged next to Prada, which completes the makeover that includes Jellyfish, Ted Baker London and Scoop NYC.

PVC and patent tote, $1,495, CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN, 312-337-8200.

We’re looking forward to seeing what spring and summer look like from Marmot, which opened just in time to buffer Chicagoans against biting winds with its down-filled outerwear (932 Rush St.).

Christian Louboutin (58 E. Oak St.) finally arrived at the former home of the Esquire Theater, promising to transform the Windy City into the Red-Soled City.

And other retail prospects abound: Saint Laurent is said to be coming to the Waldorf Astoria with new neighbor Brioni, and Tom Ford will take up space in the Esquire. The Gold Coast has become more gilded than ever.

Brian Spaly founded Bonobos when he couldn’t find a pair of pants that fit properly. Years later, the 35-year-old Stanford business school grad created Trunk Club out of frustration with the boutique shopping experience. With the help of a stylist, via phone or email consultations, Trunk Club FedExes clients eight to 10 items; after trying things on at home, they can ship back returns. What genius idea will Spaly come up with next?

Great style is relative. How do you know what’s right for Trunk Club?
We look for brands that focus on great-fitting, high-quality clothes with solid value, like John Varvatos, Jack Spade, Eton, Jeremy Argyle, Gant Rugger.

What’s your personal style?
It’s a combination of Ivy preppy/California skier/Northern Midwest lakehouse culture.

What’s next for Trunk Club?
We’ve started a pilot program of custom suits and shirts. We’re launching a designer trunk from Eton. And we’re contemplating a new office in another large city—perhaps Dallas, Atlanta or San Francisco.

A party for trunk club’s big move

It’s hard to imagine plusher headquarters than Trunk Club’s River North penthouse. The revelers who joined CEO Brian Spaly to inaugurate the new digs agreed, as they sampled food prepared by Jared Van Camp (Old Town Social, Nellcôte) and drank craft beer and cocktails. The celebration was cohosted by Gant Rugger, one of the biggest lines that TC stylists pull from. The expansive space is large enough to accommodate the company’s growing team and to display its menswear collections. But with a bar and impressive city views from the roof deck, will anyone ever want to go home?

Guests like Facing History‘s co-founder Judy Wise, Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard and Allstate CEO Tom Wilson checked out the installations about people and communities that have experienced racism and injustice.
