Chanel has reopened its boutique in Dallas at Highland Park Village. The 6,500-square-foot store was designed in partnership with longtime Chanel collaborator Peter Marino and showcases the entire Chanel universe including clothing, shoes, handbags, watches and fine jewelry and fragrance and beauty. Designed to feel like a private residence, the two-story space is a modern blend of serene neutral tones and accents of pink, gold and yellow. Past the matte black granite entryway featuring a Peter Marino-designed bronze commode, clients will discover handbags and accessories as well as the fine jewelry and watch salons (the J12 watch collection and Coco Crush fine jewelry collections). At the back of the boutique, a glistening gold and polished black room is reserved for fragrance and beauty. Upstairs, the ready-to-wear salon features a dynamic mix of antique and contemporary furniture and decorative art including chairs by the Italian furniture designer Augusto Bozzi upholstered in custom fabrics, lion sculptures from the Italian ceramicist Bruno Gambone, custom gilt tables from the French-Swedish artist Ingrid Donat and a 12-paneled 18th-century Chinese Coromandel screen. Artwork by Andrei Molodkin, Johan Creten, Heinz Mack, Vera Luter, Mario Deluigi and François Morellet are on display throughout.

The store opens with Virginie Viard’s spring/summer ready-to-wear collection, inspired by freedom, movement and the seaside gardens of Villa Noailles, a modernist home in Hyères, France, designed by the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1929. Lightweight tweed and neoprene suiting, striped terry cloth jackets, swimsuits, lace dresses and trousers and transparent organza separates made for layering. “I tried to bring one thing and its opposite together in the coolest way possible,” says Viard. “And the gardens and swimming pool of the villa Noailles, that exceptional setting, lend themselves to that rather well.”

Room Request! Hôtel Swexan https://dujour.com/cities/dallas/room-request-hotel-swexan/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 22:19:07 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=130708 Dallas' newest boutique luxury hotel is turning heads in the Harwood District

Owned and operated by Harwood International, the Dallas-based real estate firm, Hôtel Swexan has opened in the Harwood District. Designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the property features 134 well-appointed guest rooms and eight suites in a modern 22-story tower, boasting sweeping views of the skyline. A rooftop infinity-edge swimming pool, private social club and five world-class culinary concepts are some of the property’s special amenities. Its signature restaurant, Stillwell’s, is a steakhouse serving locally raised and ranched Akaushi cattle. All-day restaurant Isabelle’s, on the lobby level, serves breakfast, lunch, light bites, tea and drinks at night. The property features over 100 different types of natural stone and wood, including carved limestone throughout the lobby. One of the hotel’s hallmark features is that every single bathroom is one-of-a-kind, outfitted with different wallpapers, lighting, fixtures, floors and tiles.

DuJour spoke with Julian Payne, the property’s general manager, to learn more about this special property.

A King Corner Room at the Hotel Swexan

A King Corner Room at the Hotel Swexan

What’s the most requested room at the property?

The Panoramic King Corner Room, #1801

What makes it so special?

As the corner room on one of the highest floors of the hotel, the space has more privacy and an extra window, providing even more natural light than the already bright accommodations. In addition to the two walls of floor to ceiling windows for extra light, the Panoramic King Corner Room has uninterrupted views, and 10’ ceilings. The bed features 400 thread count Frette sheets, and the 5-fixture bathroom includes a soaking tub with water that comes from the ceiling and a beautiful walk-in shower, outfitted with a lineup of hand-selected Le Labo products. This room is seamlessly stylish, and is truly a special space for guests.

What is the nightly rate for this room?

From $765

What’s an interesting tidbit about the hotel that speaks to its status as an icon?

We have a secret door that leads to the hideaway bar and club, Babou’s, but ssh it’s a secret!

Babou’s at the Hotel Swexan

Babou’s at the Hotel Swexan

What special perk or amenity do you offer that no one knows about?

We offer personal amenities that really speak to our guests on an individual basis. For example, we once had a stamp collector staying on property, so our team sent a cake with a Swexan stamp on top of it for him to enjoy. Our amenities and special perks are truly endless and very customizable.

What’s your personal favorite room? Why?

My personal favorite room is the Grand Swexan suite. While all of our suites are unique and special in their own way, this room encompasses the real blend of Swiss and Texan charm which really represents who we are. The Chamois mountain goat and the Longhorn cowhide are just two examples of hints to the Texas Swiss identity.

What’s your favorite design element on property?

Every part of the hotel tells a different story, from the opulent events space with Corinthian pillars to the playroom of the hotel, Babou’s, with its catprint carpet.

What is another fun fact about the property?

There are exactly 26 public bathrooms on the property. Each bathroom is completely different and has its own identity. The designer, Melinda Clark, was encouraged to be creative, and create bathrooms that would grab the guests attention with loud and eccentric statements, such as tiled walls and floors, creative light fixtures and golden urinals.

The Spa at The Ritz-Carlton

The Ritz-Carlton, Dallas, Texas’ first and Dallas’ only five-star hotel, has completed a thoughtful redesign of its 12,000-square-foot spa. Dallas-based design firm ForrestPerkins thoughtfully transformed The Spa at The Ritz-Carlton into a tranquil and enchanted garden oasis. “Our vision was to transform The Spa, choreographing an exquisite guest experience with a sense of place and individuality through attention to design, detail and service,” says spa director Scott Studstill. “The redesign does exactly that, offering a daily dose of nature in a luxurious and soothing setting, and we look forward to welcoming spa-goers to experience our elegant new look along with brand-new treatment options for a fresh, luxury spa experience.” A crisp white color palette peppered with bronze details, lilac, lavender and blue accents gives way to soaring ceilings. New treatments employ the natural healing properties of diamonds and CBD to rejuvenate and refresh tired muscles and skin. The soothing Diamond Facial is designed to improve elasticity and luminosity of the skin, as diamonds reinforce the skin’s natural defense system. For a complete mind and body treatment experience, the Calm, Balance and Delight treatment includes a hemp-derived edible and soothing craniosacral techniques to boost overall health and immunity, directly followed by a luxurious full-body massage and CBD foot treatment.

Pressed Roots

First-of-its-kind silk blowout bar Pressed Roots has opened a second location in Plano. The brand is reimagining the traditional salon experience by creating an inclusive community and challenging the broader beauty and hair care industries that have excluded textured hair for decades. An array of pale shades of pink and brown, rounded edges and natural materials such as pampas grass and wood contribute to the chic and calming atmosphere. Pressed Roots’ signature services include the signature silk blowout in a variety of styles, including silky straight, loose curls or beach waves. Pressed Roots also offers a mini press for children under 8, as well as add-on services like trims, detoxifying treatments, extensions, deep conditioning treatments and more. The Plano salon will also offer new VIP stations for the first time, providing a more private experience.

Global hospitality empire Major Food Group (founded by Jeff Zalaznick, Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi) has expanded its celebrated Carbone to Dallas’ Design District. “Carbone was made for Dallas and its dynamic, worldly community, so it is a thrill to finally share this legendary restaurant with such an extraordinary city—and there’s much more to come,” says Zalaznick. In just 10 years, Major Food Group has pioneered a celebratory style of dining at its portfolio of over 30 restaurants, bars, private clubs and hotels across the globe.

While the ambiance and design elements, courtesy of design visionary Ken Fulk, are signature to the success of Carbone, the food is truly a top priority. Carbone Dallas will offer signature dishes like the rigatoni in vodka sauce, veal chop parmesan and Caesar salad prepared tableside, with a few seasonal items mixed in.

The opulent, Venetian-inspired space showcases the grandeur of a palazzo layered with a heavy dose of mid-century swagger and unapologetic luxury. One special design element, unique to Dallas, is a highly intimate yet over-the-top lounge accessed through the dining room. “Carbone Dallas was designed to raise the bar for dining out,” says Fulk. “Crafted with an old world elegance, it’s utterly glamorous and filled with big doses of high style. Soon to be the spot to see and be seen, it’s the perfect match for a city that’s known for grand gestures.”

Toussaint Brasserie

Located in the Renaissance Hotel Saint Elm, Toussaint Brasserie is now open from Dallas-based owner and creator John Kirtland. The ingredient-driven menu features French staples such as moules frites, steak tartare, poulet roti and lobster thermidor. “We’ve created a modern interpretation of the French brasserie cuisine that adorned Paris, New Orleans and Vietnam at the turn of the century and pays homage to the traditional cooking of these famed culinary destinations,” says Kirtland. Complementing the food menu, a robust cocktail and wine menu is on offer. Designed by Droese Raney (José, Mirador and Park House), the wood and marble 3,200-square-foot space in a palette of blue, gray and caramel speaks to the traditional brasseries of Paris and New Orleans. “We created Toussaint as a place we’d actually like to visit with friends, for date night or pop in for a quick lunch ourselves. It’ll offer Dallas and visitors alike a spirited downtown destination for French comfort food made with high-quality ingredients, a lively soundtrack and well-crafted cocktails in a comfortable setting,” says Kirtland.

Nuri Grill

When guests walk into the thoughtfully designed, newly opened Nuri Grill in Koreatown, which features interactive grills at each table, they will feel transported. Wan Kim, a native Korean and current Dallas resident, was inspired by his lifelong passion for food and business. Kim tasked Minji Kim, a Michelin-recognized Korean chef, and her lead chef and husband, Ben Lee, with creating a menu that allows Dallas residents to sample superior Korean-inspired cuisine in a relaxed setting. The menu uses high-quality ingredients and adds an elevated twist to traditional Asian-American foods such as kimchi fried rice, Korean-style short rib and hand-breaded sweet chicken. The experiential aspect of the 4,000-square-foot restaurant starts at the tables. The space seats 108 people and aims to bring its guests together as they savor new flavors and experiences. Each table has a grill in the middle that can be used by the servers to prepare the premium meats while diners watch in awe, or guests can choose to cook their own food for an even more interactive meal. Nuri Grill brings an intimate dining experience laced with culinary adventure to Dallas for the ultimate meal.

Firestone & Robertson Distilling, the artisan whiskey makers of TX Blended Whiskey and TX Straight Bourbon based in Fort Worth, have launched the first Bottled-in-Bond Texas bourbon, a single-barrel expression of TX Straight Bourbon. Following a process of dedication, innovation and patience, the Bottled-in-Bond rule dates back to 1897, when Congress first provided the regulations. A product achieves the label only when the alcohol is produced by one master distiller at one distillery within one season. Additionally, the alcohol must be aged in charred oak barrels for at least four years and bottled at 100 proof in the United States.

Situated in downtown Fort Worth, the new 226-room Kimpton Harper Hotel nabbed a unique location in the historic Farmers and Mechanics National Bank landmark building. The iconic building was once the tallest in Fort Worth, and this spring, the 24-story hotel will celebrate its panoramic vistas with a rooftop observation deck offering 360-degree views of the city. A posh penthouse bar and lounge, Refinery 714, will offer craft cocktails and sweeping city views while Il Modo will serve Italian cuisine with a modern twist. The Kimpton Harper will bring a playful edge that is signature to all Kimpton properties, while embracing the building’s original architecture.

Where to Eat

The second Village Baking Co. boulangerie location in Dallas is a true haven for French pastries, breads and sandwiches. Back in 2004, co-owner Clint Cooper finessed his skills as an artisan baker at small village bakeries in France and, shortly after, brought his passion for baking to the Lone Star state. Village Baking Co. opened in Dallas with a deep appreciation for high-quality breads, croissants and more, all made in house daily. With the opening of its second boulangerie in Knox-Henderson, Village Baking Co. is heating up to deliver an authentic farm-to-table experience.

Originally built in 1914 by architect Ludwig Bernhart Weinman, the Isis Theatre in Fort Worth was a legendary destination for entertainment with 950 seats and the largest screen in the city at the time. The historic cultural outpost is not only being restored to its former glory, it is being given a bit of a facelift, too. The new Isis Theatre will reopen as a cinema during the day and screen classic Western films at night. It will also host live performances at night with a speakeasy aesthetic.

One of the most remarkable new exhibitions on display in Dallas can be found at Dallas Contemporary. Birds is the first North American exhibition of Italian fashion photographer Paolo Roversi, featuring over 40 photographs. The work shines a spotlight on Roversi’s four decade-long collaboration with fashion brand Comme des Garçons and its founder, Rei Kawakubo. Birds offers a look at how special Roversi’s eye for shape and movement truly is. Many of his works capture models in abstract poses that emulate birds landing or taking flight. The exhibition, co-curated by Dallas Contemporary executive director Peter Doroshenko and curator Dennis Freedman, showcases famous photographs as well as never-before-seen works.

Inspired by the mixtapes of the 1980s and 1990s, Nasher Mixtape at the Nasher Sculpture Center is a celebration of the museum’s collection. The spring/summer series of exhibitions focuses on the permanent collections but also showcases micro-exhibitions. Each gallery or grouping has a specific point of view, inspiration and story. Nasher Mixtape offers a range of groupings of art, including one called “Into the Garden” that welcomes visitors into the sculpture garden for a nature-inspired installation. Visitors will find a diverse showing of art by the likes of Judy Chicago, Melvin Edwards and David Smith.

Encina

The space that once housed Bolsa has been reimagined and transformed into Encina. Head chef and owner Matt Balke (former executive chef of Bolsa) teamed up with front-of-house restaurant expert and life partner Corey McCombs (Stephan Pyles, Flora Street) to curate a colorful menu of American cuisine. Inspired by the Oak Cliff neighborhood and the space’s beloved quirky personality, the duo updated the interior’s look and feel with their own twist. “I’ve spent many years in this building and am incredibly proud to bring my version of a neighborhood restaurant to the beloved and revitalized space,” says Balke. “There is a lot of history here. With a refreshed design and new food and drink menus, Encina will celebrate the history of the building while

Berni Bean Coffee Company

The newest (and most Instagram-worthy) Costa Rican coffee shop to open in Dallas offers premium java that supports sustainability is undeniably delicious. The brother-and-sister duo behind Berni Bean Coffee Company founded the coffee brand as a way to share their family’s 150-year-old coffee tradition that started with their grandfather who spent many years producing coffee in Costa Rica. The brand’s new outpost in Dallas features three Costa Rican coffee roasts: one for espresso and two for coffee. We love the specialty lattes such as the Toasted Marsh Latte (espresso with mocha and toasted marshmallow syrup and topped with vanilla, chocolate drizzle and marshmallows). Whether you are enjoying a weekend at home in Dallas, Texas or find yourself with a weekend away in the bustling city, there is rich history to savor and beautiful landmarks to explore. We’ve put together a trio of our favorite new hotels in Dallas that offer an ideal combination of luxury, culture, and impressive design. Either book a stay or simply spend the afternoon admiring the beauty these properties have to offer. Pro tip: don’t skip the observation deck at the Thompson Dallas. If you’d rather focus on yourself in Dallas, we suggest heading to the newly opened Vitalyc Medspa for an afternoon of self-care. Check out our guide to where to stay and where to get pampered in Dallas below.

Where to Stay:

Housed inside the city’s historic First National Bank Tower, the 219-room Thompson Dallas has been restored and designed by Merriman Anderson Architects for a fall opening. The landmark’s interior is sprinkled with beautifully preserved details like marble, accentuated by local and national contemporary artwork. Visitors will relish the supper club, spa and sky-high observation deck, as well as the sprawling penthouse suites.

Originally built in 1925, the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek boasts original architecture influenced by 16th-century renaissance Italy and meticulously restored features such as hand-carved fireplaces, marble floors and stained-glass windows. Timed to the hotel’s 40th anniversary, the property will unveil a redesign of the property’s guestrooms, suites and lobby later this year. Washington, D.C.-based interior designer Thomas Pheasant is overseeing the renovation to modernize the interior spaces.

Designed by African American architect William Sidney Pittman in 1916, the new Kimpton Pittman Hotel is sure to become a fixture in the Deep Ellum neighborhood, where vibrant street murals and lush gardens coexist. “Architects Perkins+Will and designers at Busta Studio worked in tandem with the Dallas Historical Society to preserve the building’s original features and tie in the history of the space through meaningful design elements,” says the hotel’s general manager, Jack Murray. “We wanted to create a sort of romantic juxtaposition with the restoration of the historic landmark coupled with a new, contemporary tower.” The loft-like, industrial common spaces feature exposed steel, raw concrete and natural leather against simple white walls. The Elm & Good restaurant and the pool deck venues are sure to become popular with hotel guests and locals alike. Guests can expect a menu that emphasizes locally sourced ingredients and vegetable-forward dishes set to live music and great cocktails. “We’re hoping to be a place that encourages community, with a mix of local and out-of-town guests,” says Murray.

After nine years as a graphic designer, Lauren Blake decided to launch American-made luxury handbag brand Wyld Empyre. The Fort Worth native and resident lives with her husband and two sons and studied architecture at the University of Texas and 3D design and sculpture at Texas Christian University. “Throughout my career, I’ve navigated a balance between craftsmanship and creative risk-taking while working with metal, wood, and concrete designs and testing color theories,” says Blake. The designer already had a keen design eye and taste level that made the transition to fashion design seamless.

The Carlyle Crossbody bag

“When embarking on this journey, my vision was to provide consumers with unique yet practical leather goods with a modern edge and a touch of pop art,” says Blake. The bags are made with the finest skins, leathers and other materials, all ethically sourced from family-owned tanneries and ateliers in Spain, Italy and Louisiana, and the hardware is 18-karat-gold-plated. “When planning my collection, I always try to keep function and style in mind. I want our timeless designs to complement [customers’] everyday lives,” the designer explains.

This spring, with so much economic devastation across the country, Blake committed to donating 30 percent of the proceeds from every handbag sale to BABY2BABY, an organization that provides children living in poverty with all the basic necessities that every child needs and deserves.

Chill out with Cryo, a new steel attachment for BeautyBio’s best-selling GloPro microneedling facial roller device. “Skin icing has been an age-old remedy for inflammation and depuffing,” explains the Dallas-based brand’s co-founder and CEO, Jamie O’Banion. “We have harnessed the pore tightening and contouring benefits of skin icing in a way that everyone can easily execute.” The Cryo comes with two heads: one for around the eyes and another for the face and body, where the freeze can ease sore muscles.

Natura Bissé’s new Diamond Cocoon Sheer cream and matching eye treatment guard facial skin against pollution and blue light while moisturizing and smoothing the complexion via light-adaptive pigments. The multifunctional products also work as makeup primers. Based in Barcelona, the luxury firm’s American headquarters is in Irving, a Dallas ’burb.

Having clinched the 2020 Rising Star Award from Fashion Group International of Dallas, Lela Orr is readying a boutique to showcase her Ferrah fashion label as well as other sustainable fashion and accessories. Located across the street from the hip Trinity Groves complex, the boutique is called Sept, which is steeped in meaning. “The goal is to have seven sustainable designers hanging or displaying at a time,” Orr explains. “Sept means ‘clan’ or ‘guild’; my birthday is Sept. 7; and sept also means ‘seven’ in French.” Orr’s business has quadrupled since her appearance on Project Runway in spring 2019, evolving from an atelier of mostly custom work to small-batch production runs. Ferrah means “joy” in Arabic, and Orr’s goal is “to create clothing that can bring joy to women and make you feel like your best self.” That translates to urban chic styles like a khaki belted cargo jumpsuit and a pink silk crepe skirt with side drawstrings for adjustable length. She stitches her designs using only natural-fiber textiles colored with natural dyes.

Lela Orr

“We are being more mindful of things because fashion is the biggest polluting industry, next to oil and gas,” Orr notes. She eschews synthetics like spandex and aims for zero waste, donating leftover textiles to quilting guilds or crafting them into accessories. Conscious of animal welfare, Orr uses pineapple “leather” instead of animal skins and plans on experimenting with a new textile made of cactus. She crafts felt hats with locally sourced wool that has been hand sheared to avoid wounding the sheep. “Every collection, we try to be more and more sustainable,” says the designer.

Meet Dior’s New Dallas-Based Beauty Ambassador https://dujour.com/cities/meet-diors-new-dallas-based-beauty-ambassador-joanna-czech/ Thu, 23 Apr 2020 15:30:23 +0000 Holly Haber https://dujour.com/?p=112689 Luxury skincare guru Joanna Czech is fully embracing her newest role as beauty ambassador for French house Dior

The post Meet Dior’s New Dallas-Based Beauty Ambassador appeared first on DuJour.

Operating two tony skin studios in Dallas and New York, where you must book at least a year ahead to see her personally, Polish-born entrepreneur Joanna Czech didn’t think she’d partner with a mega fashion brand. “I surprised myself by connecting to a big fashion house and skin care line,” she admits. “If a brand does so many different things, how good can they be in everything?”

Czech’s Dallas spa

Regardless, Czech was honored that a brand with such a storied heritage came calling, and she promptly agreed to study and test the new Capture Totale product line, which re-launched this January. “I love the science behind it,” says Czech, who tends to the skin of stars like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Aniston.

Dior Capture Totale C.E.L.L. ENERGY – Firming & Wrinkle-Correcting Crème

“The Capture Totale collection is strongly affiliated with reenergizing the cells, and that’s what I always believe in.” Indeed, this cellular rejuvenation through the latest LED, ultrasound, and micro-current technologies is an integral part of her famous facials, which include her magical massage work to sculpt your cheekbones and more. “With Capture Totale, they created a complex using an extraction of four flowers that brings new energy to the cells,” she explains. “To me, that was just the ultimate.” Cell metabolism decreases with age, she points out, and this affects everything from the healing process to collagen production. The other benchmark for Czech was that she herself could use the products—and now, she’s hooked.

Dior Capture Totale C.E.L.L. ENERGY – Super Potent Age-Defying Intense Serum and Capture Totale C.E.L.L. ENERGY High-Performance Gentle Cleanser

“In my 34-year career, this is the longest that I’ve been using one product,” she says. “They really make my skin feel amazing.” Of course, your whole lifestyle affects skin health. Stress and fatigue degrade it, as does alcohol. Diet is so important that Czech has just hired a nutritionist for her Dallas spa. “It is the most important factor in the way we feel and look.”

Do The Two-Step In These Designer-Favorited Boots https://dujour.com/cities/miron-crosby-prabal-gurung-dallas-texas-interview/ Tue, 14 Jan 2020 18:30:32 +0000 Holly Haber https://dujour.com/?p=109653 Meet the sister act behind the cowboy boots with a New York Fashion Week runway debut

The post Do The Two-Step In These Designer-Favorited Boots appeared first on DuJour.

When Prabal Gurung needed cowboy boots to wear to Barbara Bush’s wedding festivities, he surfed the web and discovered Miron Crosby, a fashionable collection created by two sisters in Dallas. Five months later, he had not only a pair for himself but also eight Miron Crosby x Prabal Gurung styles strutting his runway at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020.

“My whole collection for spring was about who gets to be an American, defining new Americana, and I wanted to pay respect to American heritage,” says Nepalese American fashion designer Gurung. “It was amazing that I could find two women who own this business. It’s really important that women are at the forefront of the conversation, especially in fashion, especially in culture.” Once merely a pipe dream for Lizzie Means Duplantis and Sarah Means, their two-year-old brand of fanciful cowboy boots is now a thriving enterprise.

Boots were always part of life for the sisters, who grew up outside Marfa, Texas, on an expansive cattle ranch. The girls were given a new pair for every birthday and important occasion, and each was handcrafted at their cousins’ company, Rios of Mercedes, a legacy boot maker in the Rio Grande Valley. “We had a lot of autonomy over the design of our boots because of our unprecedented access to Rios,” Means says.

Brooke Crème boot.

When they moved, separately, to New York to pursue careers—Means Duplantis in finance and Means in fashion—the sisters brought their boots. “We would get stopped all the time by people asking where we got them and where they could get similar styles, but Rios doesn’t sell directly to consumers,” Means explains. “We felt like they were more elevated and fashionable than what was available.”

Sensing real opportunity in their pie-in-the-sky ambition, the sisters started working on their brand in early 2016 and launched a year later. “We started Miron when I was pregnant with my third child and Sarah was in the middle of law school—it was really good timing,” jokes Means Duplantis. “The response was validating, so we rolled with it.” Miron Crosby stays true to authentic silhouettes and superb craftsmanship while jazzing the boots up with whimsical inlays, appliqués, leather fringe tassels, and contrasting skins and colors.

Margretta boot.

Their best seller is the Margretta, a classic tall boot decorated with stars and moons as tribute to the spectacular night skies and crescent-moon cattle brand at the family ranch. “The stars are jumping—not shooting—for good luck and optimism and well-wishing,” Means notes.

Miron Crosby has a store in Dallas at Highland Park Village where you can customize boots with letters and motifs. The boots are all leather, from the stacked heel to the Goodyear welt, and from the soft lining to seams hammered flat for comfort. The sisters collaborate on design and split other duties: Means Duplantis supervises business operations, and Means oversees marketing and production.

“We worked really well from the get-go and found our lanes,” says Means Duplantis, the elder by almost nine years. “It’s really fun, and we laugh a lot. One of the struggles is because we are together so often and so excited about the business, we sometimes don’t take time just to be sisters. We really try to find the time where we can just talk about boys and shop online.”

Story Time in Dallas, Texas https://dujour.com/cities/dallas-texas-blake-hackler-interview-artist-writer-playwright-actor/ Wed, 24 Jul 2019 15:30:43 +0000 Holly Haber http://dujour.com/?p=104034 Artist Blake Hackler tackles delicate subject matter in his creative work

The post Story Time in Dallas, Texas appeared first on DuJour.

Blake Hackler has been a storyteller since the age of 3, when he began inventing long, surreal tales that astonished his speech therapist and his mother, who was watching, unseen, through a two-way mirror. But Hackler, who grew up in the windswept Texas Panhandle city of Amarillo, didn’t think he could actually become a writer until he penned a musical on a lark at the Yale School of Drama.

“As actors, we were always complaining about the playwrights, which was ridiculous and typical, and my friend said, ‘Why don’t you write one for us?’” he recalls.

The musical wound up in FringeNYC, and Hackler graduated into a multifaceted career as an actor, director, playwright, tenured faculty member at Southern Methodist University, and codirector of the Yale Summer Conservatory. The artist swears he is slowing down (“I’m actively trying to do less,” he says), but not before Second Thought Theatre and Circle Theatre copremiere his latest play, What We Were, August 28 to September 21 at Bryant Hall.

Hackler’s plays explore modern ills, from loneliness to divisive politics, and What We Were is no different. The story centers on the reunion of three sisters who were sexually abused as children. It was loosely inspired by the true tale of Treva Throneberry, a Texan who posed as an abandoned teenager in town after town for more than a decade. Even after she was arrested for fraud, Throneberry asserted she was 16 in depositions, Hackler points out.

“What would have to happen to make someone disassociate that way and want to relive those years over and over again?” he reflects. As he was writing it, however, he shifted focus from the troubled charlatan to a tribute to sisterhood. “I don’t have siblings, but my entire life I’ve observed the relationship between my mother and her two sisters,” Hackler explains. “Even though the story in the play is not their story at all, I wanted to honor that spirit, that level of family.”

He’s also working on a commission for Dallas’ Undermain Theatre, where he is a company member. It’s a reimagining of Ibsen’s Brand as a meditation on the intersection of politics and faith. Stay tuned.

The Dallas Contemporary presents “Kate,” 58 of Sorrenti’s black-and-white portraits of his then girlfriend along with something far more exclusive: the photographer’s first Super 8mm film of the as-yet-undiscovered supermodel. “We’re talking nobody’s ever seen it except Mario and Kate,” says gallery executive director Peter Doroshenko.

The book, Kate

“Kate” will be on view through August 25 with a complementary show: “Self Service: Twenty-Five Years of Fashion, People and Ideas Reconsidered,” an exhibition celebrating the biannual Parisian periodical through photography, graphic design, and more.

Felix Culpa, which translates to “happy fault” or “blessed mistake,” is a hybrid lounge-cum-restaurant with spiffy midcentury modern decor, resplendent with velvet couches, Pop Art, and eclectic chandeliers.

The nightspot scores with authentic Italian dishes and American classics rendered with finesse. Menu highlights are the charred octopus, steak tartare blended with bone marrow béarnaise sauce, gnocchi with pickled fennel, and a rigatoni bolognese from the recipe of the mother of Bologna-born operating partner Massimiliano “Max” Sgarbi.

“In Italy, especially northern Italy, no sauce is running on the plate—it’s not dry, it’s compact,” Sgarbi explains. “So the way [the bolognese] is made is a long process with just a little bit of tomato to give the softness, and you cook it for five, six hours with the meat, carrot, celery, and red wine.”

An Immigrant’s Story of Success https://dujour.com/cities/ashley-murphree-tran-dallas-texas-verbena-parlor-social-house-interview/ Wed, 03 Apr 2019 16:30:33 +0000 Holly Habers http://dujour.com/?p=102151 From a deserted island to Dallas, Ashley Murphree Tran defies the odds

Ashley Murphree Tran knows risk. At the age of five, in 1979, she fled Ho Chi Minh City with her parents and sister in a boat crammed with refugees. On the seventh day, Thai fishermen pirated their valuables and fuel, dumped their food in the ocean, aa lind set the vessel adrift.

Murphree Tran, whose family was wealthy in Vietnam, bears them no ill will. “We were such a burden to Malaysia and Thailand,” she says. “They didn’t want us to land. I have so much understanding for the Syrians and all these Latin countries. Nobody really wants to leave and risk their lives, but…nobody wants these people.” Her boat was relatively lucky. It was one of the first to wash up on Kuku, an uninhabited Indonesian beach that became a notorious refugee camp. They lived a “bare minimum” existence for nearly a year before coming to Dallas “with nothing but the clothes on our backs” to make a new life with family members.

The café at Verbena Parlor + Social House

Murphree Tran, whose grandmother sold an herbal balm across Southeast Asia, has entrepreneurialism in her blood. She started her first business, an upscale preschool chain that she later sold, by borrowing her parents’ life savings and then some. Her latest venture is Verbena Parlor + Social House. Located in the bustling Uptown neighborhood, the unusual combination nail salon, café, and party spot was inspired by her own desire for a pleasant hangout.

“I wanted a place that was very accommodating for everybody, where you could have premium coffee, wine, and beer, and get together, laugh, and have a good time, and also get a treatment, too,” she says. She took special care to offer nontoxic nail polishes, install a premium ventilation system to extract fumes, and stock organic lotions and balms. “I’m very health conscious, and the whole idea is that it’s good for you,” she says.

Formerly called the Crow Collection of Asian Art, the downtown gallery has completed an expansion and renovation that added a studio workshop, a cozy street-side terrace, improved visitor access, and a new space for its award-winning boutique of Asian goods.

The anniversary celebration welcomes Clouds and Chaos by Jacob Hashimoto, a fascinating installation of thousands of small round kites that will be on display through April 7, plus four exhibitions featuring exquisite collections of masterworks, jade, lacquer, and divine avatars in Hindu and Buddhist art.

The New Flavors of Dallas, Texas https://dujour.com/cities/circo-dallas-restaurant-texas-sirio-maccioni/ Mon, 28 Jan 2019 16:00:44 +0000 Holly Haber http://dujour.com/?p=99842 Dallas has so many fans of Le Cirque and Circo (pronounced “cheerko”) that the city has now gained one of its own

Anchoring a residential tower in uptown, Circo Dallas boasts an Italian coastal menu, house-made pasta, and three signature dishes by famed Le Cirque founder Sirio Maccioni: Mama Egi’s spinach and buffalo ricotta ravioli, lobster and black truffle salad, and crème brûlée.

The restaurant also has an unusual twist: Circo Beach—a private club with a glass-bottomed swimming pool, cabanas, mini spa treatments, and other services—tops the ground-floor restaurant. The entire space spans 25,000 square feet.

Circo Beach club, with its cabanas and a glass-bottomed pool, sits above the restaurant.

Young restaurateur Lauren Santagati spent a couple of years negotiating the franchise deal with legendary Le Cirque chef Maccioni and his family, and another two years building it.

“After much anticipation, we are thrilled to finally welcome Dallas to our 25,000-square-foot, two-story iconic Circo,” says Santagati, CEO of White Roc Hospitality Group. “Our goal is to be a premier Dallas destination to enjoy year-round.”

Go Dada

Eighty-plus works of painting, sculpture and paper by Dada co-founder Jean Arp are on view at the Nasher Sculpture Center. “It’s a tremendous privilege to present Arp’s astoundingly inventive and varied works,” says Nasher curator Catherine Craft. “Experiencing the full range of his achievements reveals an artist of protean creativity.”

“The Nature of Arp” runs from September 15 to January 6.

Lasting Impressions

The late Margaret and Eugene McDermott, she a philanthropist and he a founder of Texas Instruments, powered the Dallas Museum of Art—and the city—forward throughout their lives. Margaret’s passing in May brought another gift: 32 artworks by Monet, Degas, Munch, Picasso, Braque, O’Keefe and more, including Munch’s “Thuringian Forest,” Monet’s “The Water Lily Pond” and Degas’ “Dancer with a Fan.”

“An Enduring Legacy: The Eugene and Margaret McDermott Collection of Impressionist and Modern Art” will be up through February 17.

Top Dallas chef Kent Rathbun, and his wife, Tracy, have a thing for Asian cuisines—all of them. They channeled that passion into Imoto, a new upscale restaurant in rebounding Victory Park. The concept is a fantastic bar, really awesome sushi and food from all over Asia—Thai to Chinese to Indian, Japanese, Korean,” Kent notes. “We love all kinds of Asian food, so we didn’t want to pigeonhole ourselves.”

Among his favorite dishes are Vietnamese chargrilled duck spring rolls, grilled lamb curry clay pot and a one-bite treat of Japanese sea urchin wrapped in toro tuna. Pea shoots, purple amaranth and sprouts couldn’t be fresher—they’re harvested to order from a garden-like display near the sushi bar.

Chef Kent Rathbun

Chef Kent Rathbun of Imoto

Kent is best known for the delectable global menu he created at Abacus, and his signature lobster shooters are also on tap at Imoto.

Zaytinya has made The Star in Frisco—a 91-acre development anchored by the Dallas Cowboys headquarters—an unlikely foodie destination. Like its Washington, DC sister restaurant, Zaytinya’s inventive menu draws from Turkish, Greek and Lebanese fare as interpreted by star chef José Andrés and his team at ThinkFoodGroup.

Think marinated roasted red peppers with feta and thyme, Mediterranean octopus over yellow split pea puree and roasted lamb phyllo pie. The small “mezze” plates build on Andrés’ deep knowledge of Mediterranean cooking and years of research and travel. Go for the Chef’s Experience, a smorgasbord of veggie, seafood, meat and dessert plates, each harboring a symphony of flavors. It’s a steal for $65.

Zaytinya is the first Texas venture for the Michelin-starred chef and James Beard Foundation 2018 Humanitarian of the Year. Andrés landed in Puerto Rico five days after Hurricane Maria and began cooking, establishing a network that served more than 3.5 million meals—more than any other aid group.

How to Embrace Style While Doing Good https://dujour.com/cities/jennifer-sampson-ceo-united-way-metropolita-dallas-texas-nonprofit/ Tue, 11 Sep 2018 17:00:44 +0000 Holly Haber http://dujour.com/?p=97473 The status quo is unacceptable to Jennifer Sampson, president and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas

The post How to Embrace Style While Doing Good appeared first on DuJour.

Jennifer Sampson, the president and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, has big ideas and isn’t afraid to implement them. That’s the reason there are a couple hundred thousand fewer impoverished people in Dallas than if trends had continued, and why a popular nonprofit restaurant has slashed the recidivism rate of the juvenile offenders who work there.

“We are trailblazers,” Sampson says. “We work with a staff and a board that has a healthy appetite for taking smart and strategic risk.”

She’s not kidding. C-suite executives from AT&T, Frito-Lay and Toyota North America all sit on the nonprofit’s high-powered board.

Each United Way chapter operates independently, and Sampson has taken the Dallas agency well beyond the organization’s standard employee-giving fundraising and community grants. One new initiative is the GroundFloor program to nurture promising social ventures. It is responsible for several meaningful successes, such as Cafe Momentum, led by a professional chef and staffed entirely with released young offenders.

Sampson’s impact will be felt for decades via a $100 million endowment drive that launched in 2015 and is already at $56 million. That fund is separate from the annual campaign, which topped $61 million this year and was led by legendary former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman. A native of nearby Arlington, Sampson was an auditor at Arthur Andersen before joining United Way of Metropolitan Dallas in 2001 as senior vice president and chief financial officer. She rose to chief operating officer in 2004 and CEO and president in 2011.

Along the way, she abandoned the dark suits and sensible shoes of an accountant, embracing sculptural ready-to-wear and custom fashions by Dallas designer Tish Cox. “I’ve become more confident in my own skin and my personal style reflects that,” she says. “One of my guiding principles in life—and in fashion—is to live faithfully to your authentic self.”

This Beauty Maven Goes Skin Deep https://dujour.com/cities/this-dallas-beauty-maven-goes-skin-deep/ Wed, 25 Jul 2018 15:00:20 +0000 Kim Peiffer http://dujour.com/?p=96101 Beauty Bioscience CEO and co-founder Jamie O’Banion is changing the skincare game worldwide from her Dallas headquarters

The post This Beauty Maven Goes Skin Deep appeared first on DuJour.

A quick scroll through Jamie O’Banion’s Instagram and one may wonder how the mother of three could possibly do everything that she does, and do it all seemingly flawlessly.

For starters, she seems to exist on little to no sleep, yet she looks perfectly put-together, 100 percent of the time. She travels the globe on a weekly basis, yet somehow still manages to drop off her three children at school in the morning before she boards her flight.

It should come as no surprise that this entrepreneur is continuing to reel in success with her $100 million company Beauty Bioscience and its star product, the GloPro microneedling tool, the $199 at-home device designed to stimulate collagen and elastin production. “The most important attribute for success is your ability to get back up, learn from your mistakes, be open to constructive criticism, and persevere,” O’Banion says of her well-earned success. “I have fallen more times than I can count but the only number worth recording is the number of times you get back up.”

This summer, her empire will continue to grow with the launch of a new lip serum called The Pout, a natural at-home alternative to lip injections. “One use and you will be hooked—the most perfect pouty lips in seconds,” she says. In addition, the brand will launch a rose quartz contouring roller in July—and there’s already a lengthy waitlist for it. “We all keep one at our desks at work and are seriously obsessed.”

The Story Behind a Housewives Star’s Skincare Empire https://dujour.com/cities/d-andra-simmons-real-housewives-of-dallas-hard-night-good-morning-skincare/ Tue, 13 Mar 2018 15:30:32 +0000 Samuel Anderson http://dujour.com/?p=93247 From the White House to The Real Housewives of Dallas, D'Andra Simmons has been an ethically conscious business maven

The post The Story Behind a Housewives Star’s Skincare Empire appeared first on DuJour.

As a Real Housewives of Dallas cast member and skincare maven, D’Andra Simmons is no stranger to environmental toxins. Despite the recent second season’s many sordid hijinks, which included everything from death threats to sex toy gags gone wrong, Simmons managed to stay above the fray. “Even though I’m on a Housewives show, a huge part of what I do is about being ethical,” she says.

Indeed, as CEO of Hard Night Good Morning skincare, she’s fought against her fair share of questionable ethics. “In the beginning, some of the bigger labs might not have talked to you because you’re a woman,” recalls Simmons. “Most of the people I deal with are men. And they may think, ‘Oh you’re just a woman.’ But I think we’ve been here long enough now that we’ve proven ourselves.”

Whether she’s persevering in the face of patriarchy or developing skincare responsibly, Simmons doesn’t turn the other cheek when it comes to ethics. Launched in 2008, Hard Night Good Morning is vegan and cruelty-free, utilizing wellness secrets developed by her mother Dee, a cancer survivor and matriarch of the line’s parent company Ultimate Living.

Despite Simmons’s family tree of entrepreneurs (her father and uncle were the legendary corporate raiders Glenn and Harold Simmons) her path to business wasn’t linear. After studying political science at Sweet Briar College, she moved to L.A. to give acting a try. But her mother’s cancer diagnosis in 1987 set her on a new course. “I went along with her around the world to meet with nutritionists and herbalists,” she says. “We went to Tijuana to get all these detox infusions and IVs.” But as Ultimate Living grew, so did tensions between mother and daughter. “Because of our strong personalities, I’d work for her for a little bit and then be like, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’”

Simmons’s form of rebellion was to move to Washington, D.C., as an employee of George W. Bush’s Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management. While she was eventually offered a role as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency, Dee ultimately proved less volatile than nuclear waste management. “My mother said, ‘You’re never going to have another chance to have your own business,’ so I came home.”

But these days, Simmons is politically engaged as ever. “The best thing about Housewives is that it’s allowed me to give my causes a much bigger platform,” says Simmons, a UNICEF board member and ambassador for Glenn Beck’s Nazarene Fund. And with a resumé like hers, there’s no Housewives mess Simmons isn’t equipped to handle. “I went to a women’s college,” she says. “When Brandy put a dildo in my bag, I didn’t bat an eyelash.”

Nothing has been more eagerly anticipated by preservationists and hipsters alike than the Statler Hotel & Residences. Abandoned and forlorn for years, the downtown building is a midcentury modern landmark that debuted in 1956 as one of the most glamorous hotels in the world, the Statler-Hilton. A $225-million overhaul retooled it into a Curio by Hilton with apartments, restaurants, a concert venue, and a rooftop pool and bar with panoramic views. Doormen sporting black cowboy hats, boots and western suits usher guests into the sweeping white marble lobby, now highlighted by a 40-foot modern mural by Jack Lubin.

Visitors and locals can savor dim sum and roast duck at Fine China, southern biscuits and farm-to-table diner fare at Overeasy, and craft cocktails at Bourbon & Banter or Waterproof, the rooftop lounge with a view. In addition, Scout sports bar presents craft beer with billiards and foosball.

The Statler introduced elevator music to the world, a tradition gleefully reinvented as a Spotify channel of “retro forward” tunes by the likes of Leon Bridges, Otis Redding and Tony Bennett.

The French Room, the Adolphus Hotel’s venerable restaurant, reclaims its spot as a crown jewel of Dallas dining. Shuttered in June 2016 for an extensive facelift, the elegant space glows with creamy Venetian plaster, gold leaf accents, twin Murano glass chandeliers and a green marble floor. Taste three, seven or 15 courses by Daniel Boulud veteran Michael Ehlert, who modeled the cuisine after foundational French chef Auguste Escoffier. It’s all part of a massive renovation of the 1912 Beaux Arts building on Commerce Street, a block from Neiman Marcus.

NorthPark Center has made a name by attracting in-demand retailers, and its recent additions are no exception to the rule. Rebecca Taylor arrived in Texas this April with a romantic, swoon-worthy boutique where the designer’s floaty dresses, sportswear and jeans are displayed amid blush plaster walls and a glittering, mirror-flecked marble floor. Those who prefer a more rugged take on luxury need only travel a short distance to the latest Texas outpost of Detroit-based lifestyle brand Shinola, which is stocked with a full array of American-built watches, jewelry, leather goods, stationery, bikes and gadgets like the Runwell hi-fi turntable. In conjunction with its June reopening in a luxurious new space, Coach will unveil an on-site “craftsmanship bar” offering complimentary leather cleaning, monogramming, repairs and other services emphasizing the brand’s focus on workmanship.

Expect the boutique to be stocked with its share of covetable accessories, including the new 1941 Bandit handbag in pebble leather and exotic skin editions of the Dinkier Link cross-body clutch and Rogue Link tote. Lastly, each Aesop apothecary is custom-designed for its location. While specifics of its NorthPark debut are hush-hush, the boutique—which opens this season—will carry the brand’s extensive collection of carefully formulated hair, skin and bath balms—plus a unique “Texas kit” of unisex travel toiletries emblazoned with Davy Crockett’s storied quote: “You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas.”

A dish at Rapscallion

Rapscallion
As its name suggests, Lowest Greenville’s Rapscallion—a collaboration among siblings Brooks and Bradley Anderson and chef Nathan Tate (also the trio behind the Bishop Arts bistro Boulevardier)—doesn’t play by the rules. Tate and chef de cuisine Jonathan Peters mix up down-home cooking with unexpected modern touches for dishes including Nashville-style hot chicken smothered with Szechuan mala sauce; a grass-fed burger with three-cheese pimiento, house pepper bacon, creole mustard and spiced sweet-potato chips; and coriander-cured yellowtail with green tomato, corn bread and scallion oil. There’s also a raw bar, packed with a rotating list of oysters and other seafood specialties.

Just as the dinner menu uses select products from Tate’s family farm, the libations stick close to home with a list of all-American wine and beer as well as an ever-changing array of cocktails. In fact, it’s those beverages that helped earn the eatery its name. “Lowest Greenville is famous for being a bit of a boozy entertainment district full of rapscallions,” Brooks Anderson says, “so it all just worked.”

Filament
Matt McCallister’s Filament is all about Southern roots. The menu at the Deep Ellum eatery highlights the diversity of the region’s cuisine, something McCallister knows plenty about. “I grew up eating a lot of preparations my mom drew from the cooking of her grandmother,” he says. So thank his forebearers for dishes like fried sepia tacos with green papaya slaw and a hot catfish sandwich on Pullman bread. And don’t miss out on a spot at the 24-seat bar, where you can sample from Filament’s 100-plus bottles of wine, craft beer on tap or selection of seasonal cocktails.

Café Momentum

Café Momentum

Café Momentum
Six years ago, Chad Houser visited a Dallas County juvenile-detention facility and taught eight young men to make ice cream for a competition at the Dallas Farmers Market. Three years later, he left his job and began pursuing Café Momentum, a restaurant that offers post-release paid internships for juvenile offenders. The program now has a full-time brick-and-mortar home, and during a 12-month period, the young men work through five stations in the restaurant, each with an attached curriculum that covers basic culinary duties along with applicable life skills.

“So many important lessons can be learned in washing dishes, waiting tables and everything else in between,” says Houser. There are nearly 6,500 kids who enter the Dallas County juvenile system every year, and Houser says, “I hope we build enough restaurants to work with all of them.”

Annie Rupani may have been Miss Pakistan World in 2010, but she’s Houston’s reigning queen of chocolate. The owner of the new luxury chocolate boutique Cacao & Cardamom launched her handcrafted truffles and bonbons biz in 2012—sans storefront. In 2014, she opened her sharp-looking 1,400-square-foot shop near the Galleria, where she offers a rainbow of exotic cacao-based delicacies in flavors like lychee basil and coco curry. For Valentine’s Day, expect aphrodisiac-inspired star anise and honey, champagne and Pop Rocks and balsamic ganache-infused figs.

“It gives me great joy to watch customers enjoying these uniquely infused chocolates and experience spices and fruits they’ve never tried before,” she says. “It inspires me to push the limits a little further in creating inventive flavors, while still retaining the ultimate flavor of chocolate in each bonbon.”

Rupani also holds classes in her “Chocolate Laboratory” at the back of the store, where she walks guests through her chocolate-making process, from creating the ganache to shelling each confection—all served with bubbly.

Balenciaga, now helmed by artistic director Alexander Wang, has opened a boutique at Highland Park Village. Designer Ryan Korban created the shop’s aesthetic with materials such as dark green marble—a Wang signature—polished chrome, cracked resin limestone and suede. A black-and-white tiled floor, an homage to the classic tiles used by Cristóbal Balenciaga in Paris, has been updated with the addition of polished steel cabochon tiles.

The setting is ideal to show off the brand’s fall/winter collection, which focuses on sculpted knits (which are folded, bonded, shaped, embroidered, laminated and twisted) and handcrafting. Standouts include structured leather dresses, asymmetrical embroidered coats, cable-knit raincoats and tailored canvas trousers. Wang sees the new space as “a salon in the couture tradition, which encapsulates all of the symbols of the new design concept.” For a contemporary store, it’s got something of an old soul. “I’m inspired by its sense of intimacy and how all of the contrasting materials come together to link history and future in a beautiful way,” he says.

Brunello Cucinelli is a humble, gregarious man whose fashion brand celebrates human dignity, but he was treated like a king during his visit to Dallas. The city’s top social stratum glossed up and stepped out—many of them clad head to toe in the brand’s natty sportswear—to fete Cucinelli’s new boutique at Highland Park Village.

“He is such a wonderful man, a total renaissance man,” said Stephen Summers, who owns the posh shopping center with his wife, Elisa, and in-laws Heather and Ray Washburne. “Essentially everyone in his town is employed because of him. It blows my mind.”

In line with Cucinelli’s desire to improve the human condition, the shop allotted 10 percent of sales for four days to the North Texas Food Bank. “I’m on the board of the Food Bank, and when we knew they were coming we threw our hat in the ring,” said Katherine Perot Reeves. “[The brand] is one of my favorites and I thought, maybe I can combine two things I like!”
