Alex Mill Opens In East Hampton https://dujour.com/cities/alex-mill-east-hampton/ Thu, 25 Jul 2024 23:54:24 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=134675 The American brand opens its first Hamptons boutique, open through September

The post Alex Mill Opens In East Hampton appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Alex Mill, the cult-favorite men’s and women’s fashion brand, founded by Alex Drexler in 2012, has opened a pop-up in East Hampton, which will be open through September. The son of retail legend Mickey Drexler, Alex and his partner, creative director Somsack Sikhounmuong (J. Crew) initially found success with men’s shirting before the brand expanded to include complete men’s and women’s offerings. “We all multi-task and we’re all in the office together,” says Mickey Drexler, the brand’s chairman. “I don’t need the old loudspeaker I had at J. Crew to talk to people. There’s less people to call on and here, I am touching everything. It gives everyone a bigger sense of responsibility,” he says of working on the brand’s small team. So how is it working on a brand with your son when you’re an icon in the fashion and retail industry? “There’s an adjustment period working with family,” he explains. “We work at it hard. You’re a father but you’re also a business partner. You need to establish a successful, viable business for the team to hone their skills, values and worth. It’s takes extra special work.”

The Hamptons is the brand’s first location outside New York City (SoHo and the Upper East Side). “We looked at several places around America and East Hampton won by far,” says Alex Drexler. “It’s a great demographic who loves fashion.” The store features white-washed walls and raw muslin tenting, natural floor coverings and raw wood fixtures that will make the space feel like an extension of the beach. Men’s and women’s clothing and accessories are on offer as are one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.

Alex Mill East Hampton

Alex Mill’s East Hampton store

We spoke with Alex Drexler about the brand, the new store and what’s to come.

Twelve years later, what has been the secret to your success?

Since the beginning we’ve always stayed focus and consistent in what we believe in. For example, one of our mottos is “Wake up. Get dressed. Don’t overthink it.” We want to make it effortless for our customer and we’ve tried to stay true to this motto since the beginning. However, it’s important not to stay static so we’re constantly working to evolve as we grow.

How has the brand evolved?

Alex Mill started in 2012 as a men’s shirt brand. We had a small store on Elizabeth Street and did some wholesale. Since then, we’ve evolved a tremendous amount. We now have a full men’s and women’s collection and accessories. We also recently launched denim.

Is brick and mortar retail important to the brand?

Brick-and-mortar is a critical place for us to interact with our customers. The customer can look at and touch the product firsthand and speak with our team in the store. What’s great is we can receive immediate feedback on the collection and new offerings. We always love to hear what the customer thinks and wants so it’s great in that sense. We started the company with one small store on Elizabeth Street. Today, we have two stores in Manhattan (SoHo and the Upper East Side) and one in East Hampton. We’re excited to continue to open stores and grow.

Alex Mill East Hampton

Alex Mill’s East Hampton store

You hosted a pop-up at SoulCycle‘s Barn earlier this summer. What’s special about this new location?

The Soul Cycle pop-up was a huge success and it validated to us the demand we had in the Hamptons for our product. We found a great location in East Hampton, and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity when we learned the space was available.

How do the three of you divide the responsibilities of running this company?

Alex Mill is small company, and we all work in one office together. We all get to multitask and wear many different hats, which is great.

What categories can we expect next?

We launched denim in the Spring with a focused assortment and it was a big success. We are continuing to build out our denim business, as well as our accessories. We’re excited for what’s to come.

Dan Abrams’ North Fork News https://dujour.com/cities/hamptons/dan-abrams-evem-vineyards/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 16:22:47 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=134106 The news anchor, author and, now, owner of EV&EM Vineyards, shares what he loves about the North Fork

The post Dan Abrams’ North Fork News appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Dan Abrams, the chief legal affairs correspondent for ABC News and host of Dan Abrams Live on NewsNation, is the founder and owner of EV&EM Vineyards vineyard and tasting room on Long Island’s North Fork. The 44-acre property dates back to 1984, boasting some of the area’s oldest vines, which originally supplied grapes to Long Island Wine Growers before becoming a full-fledged winery in 1996. Recently, Abrams, who has a home in Flanders, purchased the vineyard and worked closely with managing partner Vanessa Price to rebrand the vineyard (now named after his two children Everett and Emilia). EV&EM showcases three wine collections–EV&EM, Ev&em2, and Reserve–all with a focus on an array of French grape varieties.

DuJour talked with Abrams, who’s been coming to the Hamptons for 25 years, to learn about the new venture and what he loves about the North Fork.

What do you love about the North Fork?

It feels like Montauk circa 1998. Everything feels local, unaffected and gorgeous.

What’s your favorite North Fork memory?

First time I went wine tasting on the North Fork. I was amazed at the quality of (some) of the wines.

How did you get into the wine and hospitality game?

I was a partner in a restaurant called The Lion and then White Street but had always dreamed of owning a vineyard. I have had a wine collection for almost 30 years.

What was special about this vineyard that you wanted to acquire it in 2021?

The moment I walked in, I recognized the untapped potential, at first in the physical space perched above the 42-acre property and then when I got to spend some time with the vines and wines I knew with some significant investment and changes we would have a fantastic luxury winery.

What’s your favorite wine varietal?

I tend to be a cabernet and pinot noir drinker.

What wines have you released thus far? What’s next?

We offer three wine collections–EV&EM, Ev&em2 and Reserve–with around 2-8 wines in each tier. We are slowly rolling out the Reserve tier of our 2022 vintages, and are in the process of redesigning our wine bottles to reflect the stripes that are showcased on our rosé.

Favorite places in the North Fork to visit?

Main St Biscuit is our go to for brunch–best pancakes I have ever had anywhere. Schmidt’s farmstand is a must for their horseradish mustard and Harbes Farm is an amazing place for the kids.

The Shoals

The Shoals is a new waterfront hotel in Southold, situated on the North Fork and overlooking the Peconic Bay and Shelter Island. The property boasts 20 hotel suites and 20 boat slips, making it accessible by both land and sea. The hotel’s owners have partnered with local favorite family business Little Ram Oyster Company on an expansive oyster program that will be operated out of a waterfront building on the property. The Thomas Juul-Hansen-designed property pays homage to nautical history by integrating custom marine design elements into its spaces. The building’s cedar-shingle exterior and clean lines are reminiscent of New England modernism, with two stories of guest rooms thoughtfully situated for views of the bay and marina.

Pridwin Hotel and Cottages

The newly restored Pridwin Hotel and Cottages will reopen on Shelter Island with a new look after an extensive two-year renovation under the ownership of Cape Resorts (Baron’s Cove in Sag Harbor) and the Petry family, which has owned and operated the resort since 1961. Nestled on more than seven acres of Crescent Beach, the 49-room luxury destination resort features 16 charming cottages, a private beach and pool, full-service spa and a 100-seat American restaurant. “With a timeless look and emphasis on comfort and the joy of simple pleasures, The Pridwin offers guests and families a fun, cheery escape from daily life,” said Curtis Bashaw, managing partner of Cape Resorts. “Our hope is for future generations of travelers to continue to enjoy the newly restored resort the way it has been cherished since it first opened almost 100 years ago.”

The Chequit

Shelter Island’s The Chequit hotel is preserving its legacy while ushering in a new era of hospitality through a respectful renovation. The boutique hotel’s 19 renovated guest rooms and two additional buildings with 16 more rooms are adorned elegantly with a natural color palette. The Chequit’s reopening also debuts three new dining concepts created by Stacey Soloviev and led by chef Noah Schwartz: Weakfish Sushi & Noodles, The Tavern and Heights Cafe & Wine Bar. Sushi rolls and ramen are on offer at Weakfish Sushi & Noodles, farm-to-table traditional American cuisine at The Tavern and pastries in the morning followed by a cozy glass of wine in the evening at the charming Heights Cafe & Wine Bar. With a host of culinary options coupled with unparalleled accommodations, The Chequit has restored its historic property while offering guests a modern home away from home experience on Shelter Island.

Roberta’s has opened in Montauk. Co-founders Brandon Hoy and Carlo Mirarchi took over the former Arbor space, which is 5,400 square feet, includes an outside patio and two bars and seats close to 165. Look for at least a half-dozen pizzas, including its signature “Ursula’s Parade” with Littleneck clams, mozzarella, and calabrian chili. Bread baked to order in the wood oven will accompany house-made stracciatella. Pastas will feature local fish and shellfish. Natural wines, fresh cocktails, and draft beers from some of the most interesting breweries around will keep the party going. Inventive desserts, such as a bay leaf panna cotta and root beer soft serve ice cream will round out the menu.

The Sex Education of Candace Bushnell https://dujour.com/cities/hamptons/the-sex-education-of-candace-bushnell/ Thu, 30 Jun 2022 12:29:55 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=124701 The author hits the road with her one-woman show, "Is There Still Sex in the City?", which ran in New York City through last December

The post The Sex Education of Candace Bushnell appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Candace Bushnell’s Is There Still Sex in the City?, based on her most recent book, comes to the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center Saturday July 9. Bushnell, who lives in Sag Harbor, talked to DuJour Media, founded by Jason Binn, about her one-woman show, which ran in New York City through last December before hitting the road.

Your one-woman show follows your career and personal life from before you got to New York City to the present day. What made you decide to tell your story this way?

One-woman shows tend to have an autobiographical element so it seemed like an essential part of the form. But mostly it’s a universal story—a person with big dreams comes to the city to make it. Naturally, there are ups and downs. And now, forty plus years later, there are still ups and downs. Life goes around and around like a hula hoop!

What was the most difficult thing to share with an audience?

People seem to think the show is very revealing, but it doesn’t feel that way to me, probably because it was originally about three hours, and I ended up cutting it down quite a bit. I still have lots and lots of material left for a memoir!

How does it feel to perform on stage?

It’s a lot easier than writing a novel! I’ve been doing lectures and appearances for years, so it’s not all that new, just much more structured. And it’s physical. I workout much more to be able to have the stamina to do it.

Do you get stage fright?

I don’t. At this time in my life, if something made me really uncomfortable, I wouldn’t do it.

"Is There Still Sex in the City?"

“Is There Still Sex in the City?”

What part of the show do your audiences seem most intrigued by?

Probably the fact that my career encompasses much more than Sex and the City the television show. They’re impressed by how many best-selling novels I’ve written.

What have you been surprised about when it comes to your audience?

Mostly how young they are. There are lots of women in their twenties and thirties. They dress up and wear the shoes. I love it.

What have you learned about yourself performing the show?

Sometimes I think I should have pursued an acting career, which was something I thought about doing when I first came to New York and was quite young. I didn’t pursue it because it was so overwhelmingly sexist, and, of course, the casting couch situation was rampant and I didn’t want to deal with that. So it’s nice to be able to explore this part of myself at this time in life.

Your alter ego, Carrie Bradshaw, is also back in the spotlight now. Which of you is doing better in 2022?

I love seeing Carrie Bradshaw back in the spotlight, but she’s definitely going through a lot.

What do you feel is missing on television these days?

I’d love to see adaptations of my books Trading Up and One Fifth Avenue.

As the proprietor of three Southampton mainstays, Ian Duke has had a lasting impact on Southampton’s social and culinary scene. The restaurateur has worked every restaurant job imaginable after starting as a dishwasher at a local restaurant when he was 13. Duke, who lives with his wife and daughter in East Quogue, and his partner David Hilty are the owners of the ever-popular Southampton Social Club, Union Burger Bar and the newest East End dining destination, Union Sushi and Steak.

The new steakhouse serves a variety of dry-aged Niman Ranch steaks alongside the freshest and most inventive fish and sushi dishes. “We created Union Sushi & Steak because it’s what the people of Southampton were asking for,” says Duke. “Southampton has no year-round sushi restaurants, and there isn’t a dedicated steakhouse. I am a big red meat eater and love a traditional steakhouse.” Next door, Union Burger Bar continues to serve up American comfort food classics. Southampton Social Club has been in business for a decade serving Hamptonites delectable menu items like tuna tacos, Caribbean-spiced mahi-mahi and a charred vegetable napoleon alongside live music.

“The opening of Southampton Social Club was really the beginning of a whole new life for me,” says Duke. So what has he learned along the way? “It truly is a business where no one job is any more important than any other, and everyone relies on one another in order for everything to work smoothly,” says Duke. “Being able to roll with the punches is paramount.”

Ject

Founded by board-certified physician assistant Gabrielle Garritano, Ject is a new medical aesthetics skin clinic with locations in New York City and, now, Bridgehampton. “After working in Manhattan in plastic surgery for a decade, I began to see that these services were only available to the top echelon of society, creating a huge gap in the market,” Garritano explains. Neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport and Xeomin and fillers like Juvéderm, Restylane and Radiesse are on offer, along with treatments like chemical peels, microneedling (using the SkinPen Precision system, the only FDA-cleared microneedling device on the market), IPL laser and luxurious facials. The services menu is straightforward and simple, the decor is clean and elevated and the highly trained medical providers are welcoming and knowledgeable. “Getting an injectable is a very intimate experience, whether it is your first time getting Botox or fillers or something else,” she says. “It has been so important for me and my whole team to understand what every single client is experiencing when they walk through the door.”

If you spend any time in the Hamptons, you know that getting around isn’t so easy. Thankfully, Sag Harbor, East Hampton and Montauk residents and visitors now have the option of skipping their next Uber trip for a more environmentally-conscious-yet-equally-convenient ride with RoveLoop. Powered by Optimum, RoveLoop is the first of its kind “micro-mobility” model that offers free transportation in electric vehicles to all mobile app users who schedule rides between the three aforementioned Long Island villages.

RoveLoop's Gianpaolo De Felice and Jack Brinkley-Cook

RoveLoop’s Gianpaolo De Felice and Jack Brinkley-Cook

The idea was originally born in 2019 when then Sag Harbor mayor, Kathleen Mulcahy, approached Tutto Il Giorno’s Gianpaolo De Felice, who runs the popular Italian restaurant with wife Gabby Karan, about a product that would alleviate area’s issues of traffic, parking and driving under the influence. De Felice partnered with entrepreneur Jack Brinkley-Cook, the son of supermodel and Hamptonite Christie Brinkley, to launch the eco-friendly venture this summer following the success of Rove Shuttle—the duo’s other transportation service focused on luxury rides out East from Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Passengers can book shuttles until October 31, 2021, using the mobile app available through Apple’s App Store.

Elliman real estate brokers William Metzger and Julie Pinkwater moved full-time to their Wainscott home two years ago and never looked back. “As a married couple in this business, we have incredible chemistry and joy in what we do,” says Pinkwater. “Our clients feel this and feel that we are sharing our personal lives and our own Hamptons experience with them. We build long-term relationships with our clients, they become friends, and therefore finding them that great place is very important to us.” The duo likes connecting personally as well as professionally with their clients. “We’re not looking for a transactional relationship,” says Metzger. “We want intimacy with our clients that inspires trust, openness and fun. Buying a Hamptons home should be fun!” The power couple, who have three grown children, share their favorite East End haunts and sporty activities when they’re not showing homes.

Breadzilla in Wainscott for the Gruyère cheese bread, granola and the BLT with cheese and the blackened salmon sandwiches. Cavaniola’s Gourmet Cheese Shop (in Sag Harbor and Amagansett) has a truly amazing variety of cheeses along with olive oils, vinegars and other condiments. Red Horse Market in East Hampton is a great butcher shop and they make delicious pizzas.

Flowers

Ovando Flowers in Southampton has really interesting and dramatically different floral arrangements and terrariums.

Restaurants

Almond for mac and cheese, Buddhaberry for frozen yogurt, Pierre’s for the burger, Iacono Farm for heirloom eggs and the best chicken ever.

Wine

The Wölffer Estate winery is so beautiful. We love to sit on the outdoor patios, enjoy wine or cider and look out over the vineyard.

Activities

We have just about every backyard game ever made, but our favorites are badminton, KanJam, Ladder Ball, and nighttime bocce with light-up balls. We love biking from our house to Lazy Point, where we can see across Napeague Harbor to the Walking Dunes Trail. We take the dogs for a truly unique hour-long hike over there! If we’ve got the time and legs for it, we head further east on Old Montauk Highway to Montauk Lighthouse. We try to leave time for lunch at Lobster Roll or the Clam Bar. There are amazing trails around East Hampton airport that I ride with my son, and we’ve done sections of the Paumanok Path, a 125-mile hiking/biking trail. We enjoy kayaking off of West Neck Point Road in Southampton and we also keep a 16-foot Hobie Cat on Havens Beach in Sag Harbor.

Guild Hall

East Hampton arts center Guild Hall has lots in store this summer. The first, Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks, featuring more than 40 new paintings and watercolors by Alexis Rockman, opens June 12 and runs through July 26. Curated by Andrea Grover, Guild Hall’s executive director, these works by the American painter explore globalization, natural disasters, colonization and climate change.

The New York–based Rockman has depicted a darkly surreal vision of the collision between civilization and nature—often apocalyptic scenarios on a monumental scale—for over three decades. “I’m fascinated by the history of the iconography of shipwrecks and nautical history,” says Rockman. “And what better place to have this bouillabaisse of tragedy, hope and despair jam-packed full of great ideas and moments. So many things can be shipwrecks.” The artist also contributed artwork to visually unique films like Life of Pi, collaborating with directors Ang Lee and Darren Aronofsky. A companion catalog by DelMonico Books will be published in June.

LongHouse Reserve

LongHouse Reserve, the 16-acre nature reserve and outdoor sculpture garden in East Hampton founded by the late, great Jack Lenor Larsen, has reopened with new works on display. On view this season are two bluestone boulders onto which poetic phrases were carved by legendary poet, activist and artist John Giorno, who passed away in 2019. The two outdoor sculptures, “Do the Undone” (2019) and “You Can’t Hurt Me Cause Storms Can’t Hurt the Sky” (2019), are installed amongst daffodils in the vast garden, a lovely tribute to the New York artist, who spent his summers in Mattituck on the North Fork. He’s perhaps best known for his text paintings of recent decades, which feature curt and contradictory messages excerpted from his poetry—imperative, deadpan, sacred and sometimes profane. With their ironic clash of immaterial language and solid substance, these stone poems play with issues of transience and permanence, the text fragments appearing as chance apparitions.

The Natural Beauty of Sylvie Chantecaille https://dujour.com/cities/the-natural-beauty-of-sylvie-chantecaille/ Tue, 11 May 2021 15:00:15 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=119691 Chantecaille discusses her love of butterflies and how their disappearance from her East Hampton garden encouraged her philanthropic efforts

The post The Natural Beauty of Sylvie Chantecaille appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
This season, as spring flowers come into their own and butterflies return on the East Coast, a new makeup collection from Chantecaille celebrates the fluttering insects. “When we moved to East Hampton, we were told to expect lots of butterflies—hundreds of them,” explains Chantecaille founder Sylvie Chantecaille. “Then, one summer around 15 years ago, I realized my garden had very few butterfly visitors—over time they had almost disappeared. I wanted to know why, so I started researching and discovered it was a combination of a few things.”

Several factors made the monarch population’s annual journey from Mexico to Alaska almost impossible. So the philanthropist and cosmetics entrepreneur took matters into her own hands, designing a line of eyeshadows whose packaging was emblazoned with butterflies. “We raised awareness and funds to give to the scientists helping purchase land in Mexico to secure the monarch’s winter habitats,” Chantecaille explains. “This was the beginning of a long journey to use my company to help causes I really cared about around the world.” The ensuing makeup palettes and products were not only beautiful but gave back to conservation efforts globally. Chantecaille took on oceans, coral reefs, whales, turtles, lions, elephants and more.

But this year, the brand returns to the butterflies after 32 philanthropy collections to help restore healthy populations of pollinators like butterflies and bees. “With the recent fires and pressure on the food system during the pandemic, restoring 40 acres of pollinator habitat in California’s Central Valley is an important project,” she says. “We are excited to be part of creating a healthy environment for pollinators to survive and thrive in.” The proceeds from sales of the brand’s new collection of Lip Chic shades and Eye Quartets support the Xerces Society and boast a butterfly on each pastel case. Chantecaille, for one, can’t wait for the return of the butterflies this summer. Until then, she’s enjoying time by the beach with her family. “I love the light. I love the air, and I love the wind—the mixture of the aroma of the ocean, the trees and my flowers is so unique,” she says. “I love the natural abundance of this place.”

Over the years, he’s worked tirelessly to enhance the dining experience at the Southampton hotspot by updating the decor to feature artwork by photographers like Raphael Mazzucco, booking great live music and DJs, maintaining a loyal staff who know regulars by name and updating the menu to keep his customers coming back again and again.

Erdem nabbed James Beard Award-winning chef Mark Militello to expertly craft the restaurant’s Italian-American menu, featuring dishes such as slow-roasted braised baby back ribs served over creamy parmesan polenta, a seafood cobb salad and chicken cooked under a brick. Over the years, celebrities like Joe Biden, Kim Kardashian West, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sofia Vergara and Alex Rodriguez have graced its tables.

Embrace a Bit of Reinvigorated Bohemian Bliss Out East https://dujour.com/cities/the-surf-lodge-renovation-jayma-cardoso/ Thu, 08 Oct 2020 17:30:11 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=116226 Jayma Cardoso unveils a new look for Hamptons mainstay The Surf Lodge

The post Embrace a Bit of Reinvigorated Bohemian Bliss Out East appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
A weekend getaway to Montauk undoubtedly includes a visit to the Surf Lodge, the boutique hotel and restaurant on Long Island’s eastern tip. Since opening the beachy-chic mainstay in 2008, Brazilian entrepreneur Jayma Cardoso has established the outpost as a must-visit for its concert series that has hosted musicians like Willie Nelson and Leon Bridges over the years. “I originally envisioned the Surf Lodge as a small posada, like the ones in Brazil,” says Cardoso. “I love the small and private feel of being in what feels like someone’s home.” But it has been 10 years since the rooms had been renovated, and after closing for a few short months at the start of summer due to the pandemic, Cardoso decided it was time to give the guest rooms an upgrade.

“It was the perfect time to rethink our rooms and spaces for a new era. In the past, I thought of our rooms as barefoot-chic surf shack rooms—a place to change from your swimsuit to a cute outfit for dinners, parties and concerts. The new rooms are more for working and spending time in them.”

Cardoso tapped designer Kimberly Bevan of Denton House Design Studio to reinvigorate the hotel’s bohemian spirit and add more functionality to each room. Bevan is the chief designer for Mike Meldman’s Discovery Land Company, which operates private residential clubs in Cabo San Lucas, the Bahamas and Maui, among others. “I was a huge fan of her work long before meeting her,” Cardoso says. “I’ve never been so lucky, I don’t think anyone but Kimberly could have pulled this job off.” Bevan selected beachy Serena & Lily pieces and sourced local carpenters to craft daybeds, bed frames, desks and closets. “Now, people need a place to work. And we never had closets before–just hooks for your board shorts and beach hat!”

So what’s Cardoso’s favorite room on the property? “Room 21, because it features original art from Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe and it feels very special staying there.” Gallerist Max Levai curated the art for the rooms.

It’s like a trip to Uruguay without ever leaving the East End! Marram, a new luxury boutique resort hotel in Montauk, boasts 96 guest rooms, a beachy cafe, a surf program and other amenities that are all inspired by the beach town of Jose Ignacio in Uruguay. “Marram combines the best of both worlds: the nature that makes Montauk unique and the culture that put it on the map,” Bridgeton Holdings founder Atit Jariwala says of the property, which is on the ocean but within walking distance to town.

Pool at Marram

In the mostly oceanfront guest rooms, the internal design team along the firm Studio Tack utilized white oak ceilings and hand-troweled plaster walls to create warmth, bronzed hardware to instill a sunbaked feel and simple jute rugs to soften the spaces. “The ocean is your fourth wall here,” says Jariwala. “We wanted guests to feel that they could transition effortlessly from the beach to their rooms.”

Beachfront King Room at Marram

This July, famed New York City restaurant Il Buco is popping up at the laid-back, beach resort. Il Buco at Mostrador Marram is an all-day café serving items like semolina blueberry muffins, avocado, red onion and labneh on buckwheat toast at breakfast; cucumber, kohlrabi and avocado salad and lobster rolls at lunch; and cast-iron pizzas with zucchini flowers and fontina cheese at dinner.

Baked goods at Il Buco

Cocktails like an Italian Daiquiri featuring white rum, cynar and and lime and a Basil Paloma with tequila, poblano, basil-grapefruit juice, lime and soda round out the cocktail options.

Meet Long Island’s Wolf of Wine https://dujour.com/cities/wolffer-estate-vineyard-joey-wolffer-interview/ Wed, 17 Jun 2020 15:30:38 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=113970 Winery scion Joey Wölffer celebrates 10 years in business

The post Meet Long Island’s Wolf of Wine appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Between the family-owned Wölffer Estate Vineyard and two Wölffer Kitchen restaurants, Sag Harbor resident Joey Wölffer has a lot in her glass. But she’s focused on a lot more than just wine. Ten years ago, she founded The Styleliner, a riff on a food truck for fashion, to highlight designers who didn’t have a platform in the U.S. “I was eager to create a vehicle for me to bring fashion to the customer,” Wölffer says of the venture. “It’s something that really seems to work.” Five years later, she opened her first brick-and-mortar shop in Sag Harbor, and last year, she launched Joey Wölffer Reworked, a collection of one-of-a-kind, upcycled and reimagined womenswear, all made in New York City. We caught up with the entrepreneur to talk about business—and pleasure.

Wölffer Estate’s Summer in a Bottle rosé

When was the vineyard started?

My father Christian started the vineyard in 1988. He was a man with great creative vision and a huge passion for life. Wölffer Estate Vineyard & Stables was the realization of his lifelong dream and a true labor of love. Now, my father’s one-time weekend getaway spans more than 470 acres. My brother Marc and I took over the business in 2013.

Have your varietals changed over the years?

With the help of our winemaker and partner Roman Roth, we produce mainly merlot, chardonnay, cabernet franc
and cabernet sauvignon. Our unique combination of Bridgehampton loam soil and breezes from the Atlantic Ocean provides maritime conditions perfect for achieving the balance of ripeness and acidity that has come to define our style.

What new products have you launched in your tenure?

Our dry ciders and gin have extended us into new categories, and we recently launched a grüner cider. Crisp apple notes complement light acidity and bubbles bringing about a fun, fresh and youthful surprise for the palette.

What aspect of the estate is particularly close to your heart?

The stables are particularly important to me. We have an extraordinary equestrian center used for training, schooling, year-round boarding and instruction, and an 80-stall facility with the largest indoor riding ring on the East Coast.

What are your favorite local haunts?

Gibson Beach in Sagaponack and the Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island. For meals, The Crow’s Nest and Estia’s Little Kitchen and of course, Wölffer. And Judith Desirée Skin Thérapie for facials in Sag Harbor.

The luxurious body cream joins the brand’s incense, candles, kaya face and body oils (made from the protein-packed essence extracted from the pods of Brazil’s pink-blossomed sapucaia tree). “ONDA speaks of modernity when it comes to wellness, beauty and lifestyle and their boutique features a gorgeous, curated selection of products in a relaxed environment,” says Costa.

Love Letters Are Making a Comeback https://dujour.com/cities/love-letters-dear-annabelle-marcie-pantzer/ Tue, 12 May 2020 19:00:28 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=113246 Former fashion editor Marcie Pantzer makes a play for paper goods

The post Love Letters Are Making a Comeback appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Marcie Pantzer has been visiting the Hamptons regularly for two decades, first at her in-laws’ in East Hampton and then at her family’s own Sagaponack home. The former Town & Country editor recently started her own company, a sophisticated yet whimsical stationery and home paper goods business called Dear Annabelle, after her daughter. “I thought that a stationery and home goods business would be a perfect mix of all the things that I love,” Pantzer says. “I also wanted to inspire people
to take the time to spread love and joy through letters. In our increasingly digital society, we are losing the tactile pleasure of opening an envelope and reading something that someone took the time to express.” When she’s not working, the mother of four can be found at Townline beach or visiting her favorite boutiques, like Monc XIII, in Sag Harbor. Her other passion, naturally, is entertaining friends and family at her home throughout the summer. Here the entrepreneur shares her entertaining must-haves.

What’s the best entertaining advice you’ve ever received?

Pour heavy! But seriously, there are so many ways to make a party memorable, just by adding one simple twist or extra element. Make a fun toast to kick off the night, mix up a signature cocktail or play a funny party game between courses. It’s these little things that make guests remember a party.

What’s a decor element many hosts forget?

Lighting! There is nothing less flattering than entering a bright home. Sometimes I will go to parties at other people’s homes and subtly walk around lowering the lights. Candles also work magic, and they are often much more affordable than flowers for tabletop decor.

Which Dear Annabelle place cards do you use for guests?

The Dear Annabelle Tasty place cards are a definite conversation starter. Are you sweet or salty? Spicy or saucy? People love to compare their monikers.

Where do you grocery shop?

Cavaniolas in Sag Harbor is our favorite cheese shop—they have the most delicious truffle cheese and prosciutto. I absolutely love everything from Tate’s, especially the chocolate mousse cake with Oreo cookie crust. What’s your go-to hostess gift?
Dear Annabelle notepad sets or place cards. I also love to gift cocktail napkins or a chic cheese board with knives.

What do you wear when entertaining?

I love to wear white in the summer. I collect straw hats and am always wearing one. For night I usually sport a maxi dress—either white or floral—by Zimmermann, Black Iris and Johanna Ortiz.

With two wildly successful indoor cycling companies (SoulCycle and Flywheel) and a published memoir under her belt, the woman who pioneered the boutique fitness industry is taking on a more low-key passion project—a summer cycling residency at the Sag Harbor Gym. Ruth Zukerman’s love for Sag Harbor runs deep, and so do her roots in the community. Now, she’s coaching fellow spin enthusiasts and living nearby.

“Flywheel had a presence at the Sag Harbor Gym for several summers during our early years,” says Zukerman. “Riders loved making a morning of it…. a spin, an iced coffee, and a stroll on the pier or through town. I’ve missed teaching there and was determined to come back. After leaving Flywheel at the end of 2018, when I took a six month break from the bike, I couldn’t think of a better place to return to and teach classes.”

Metrics are used for some accountability in Zukerman’s class, but more importantly, she encourages riders to close their eyes and indulge in the escape. It isn’t just about cycling and fitness—Ruth wants to empower women to carry the positive attitude they have on the bike into their lives and their careers.

Classes are available weekly at 9:30am, Monday through Friday, plus an early Saturday morning option. Reserve a spot in advance here.

Rosé Royalty in the Hamptons https://dujour.com/cities/hampton-water-rose-jesse-bongiovi-jon-bon-jovi/ Wed, 20 Mar 2019 18:30:58 +0000 Kasey Caminiti http://dujour.com/?p=101888 Raise a glass of Hampton Water to the father-son duo Jesse Bongiovi and Jon Bon Jovi

The post Rosé Royalty in the Hamptons appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Since launching in early 2018, Hampton Water has been filling the glasses of not just chic Hamptonites, but rosé lovers across the country. Developed by rock legend Jon Bon Jovi and son Jesse Bongiovi, Languedoc Rosé Diving Into Hampton Water was named to Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2018 and was lauded as the top rosé in the world. “To be recognized by this esteemed organization at all, especially in our first year, is a real accomplishment and a true testament to all of our hard work,” Bongiovi says of the accolades.

Created with the help of acclaimed French winemaker Gérard Bertrand, Hampton Water offers a dry and crisp flavor, with fruit-forward tasting notes. Bongiovi describes the blend as something that can be savored all day and into the night, allowing the “Hamptons lifestyle” to be enjoyed in all its glory, no matter where you are actually sipping. “The Hamptons has always been a special place for me—it’s where my family goes to slow down from our busy lives and spend time together. We call it the exhale,” he says.

Working in the vineyards is a family affair

While eastern Long Island exudes calmness and a feeling of community, Hampton Water also strives to embody those characteristics, with its roots planted in family. “Hampton Water represents that sense of place, not necessarily geographically, but emotionally,” Bongiovi explains. “Essentially, we wanted to bottle up that feeling of making memories with people you love the most. We hope people share that same sentiment when they sip a glass of Hampton Water.”

With the introduction of the Hampton Water 2018 Vintage this spring, we’re ready to toast to this award-winning rosé and the family-focused feelings that it celebrates.

Things got pretty in pink last weekend in Sag Harbor, New York during the Hamptons Paddle & Party for Pink fundraising event for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The annual event, which benefits breast cancer, has raised nearly $10 million since its inception seven years ago, with $1.4 million being raised just this year alone.

The two-part summer soirée, held at Havens Beach, began in the morning with a brisk WPA-sanctioned paddle race and ended in the early evening with a sunset fête. The winners of the paddle race were celebrated at an awards ceremony that also toasted to the largest fundraisers at the event, Team SOS.

Event sponsor Lilly Pulitzer stayed true to the fashionable pink event with customized decorations including surfboards on display that definitely encouraged the summer theme. Hosted by Jill Martin, notable guests included Colin Cowie, Claire Florence, Christina Steinbrenner, Darcy Miller, Nicole Miller, David & Lisa Klein, and Shelly Brown. Attendees posed for photos in front of the wall of surf gear, and watched a designer hand-paint one of the surfboards throughout the evening.

President of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Myra Biblowit, went onstage to announce that the foundation will award $64 million to 300 scientists for breast cancer research. “Death rates from breast cancer have decreased by 40% since BCRF was founded 25 years ago and research is the reason,” she said. With $1.4 million raised over the weekend, the summer party was a success.

After over 10 years spent making the careers of pop’s most successful artists (Lady Gaga, Eve and Fat Joe to name a few), current Vice President of Brand Experience at Juice Press, Leah Landon, set her sights on a new leg of popular culture: fitness.

Now in Southampton Sweat’s fourth year, the certified yoga instructor, health coach, natural food chef, and fitness instructor (who also has a masters in clinical social work) has turned her passion for wellness into a bonafide experiential operation. “Five years ago, I have to say we were first to market,” Landon says about her foray into the fitness festival world. “But it was very obvious to me [that fitness] is a community, and a connection and energy people can bond over.” Upon witnessing Southampton’s own loyal community firsthand through the several Juice Press locations that are there, Landon knew this could be the perfect setting for people to burn a “Southampton Sweat.”

As for merging pop culture and fitness, Landon counts Christie Brinkley‘s daughter, Sailor, as a friend and fellow fitness-lover. After experiencing 2017’s festival, Sailor was eager to bring her mom to host the whole thing this year. “It’s all about the disrupters and game changers in fitness,” Landon says. “They all share an audience. There’s definitely this I’m part of this tribe or that tribe, but on this day, we come together as a collective.”

For the 2018 festival, fitness fanatics can enjoy pop-up workouts by New York’s most coveted studios including The Class by Taryn Toomey, AKT by Anna Kaiser, Mile High Run Club and Tonehouse. Top trainers will also be on-site to lead group classes, including Alex Silver Fagan and Akin Akman. “If you wanted, it could be five straight hours of NYC’s toughest workouts,” Landon says. Although for those seeking a more voyeuristic experience, she says, “if you want to just come and hangout, it’s the best people-watching place.”

This Memorial Day Weekend, DuJour Publisher Jason Binn along with Aurae Lifestyle, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City and Zenith Watches, toasted summer cover star Dakota Fanning out in the Hamptons at the magazine’s annual Memorial Day Kick-Off party.

On the heels of George Filopoulos‘s purchase of Gurney’s Montauk Yacht Club and Resort on Saturday, May 26, the annual summer bash offered celebrity guests light bites such as mini quiches, crab cakes and sliders, along with Whispering Angel Rosé, provided by Paul Chevalier that was flowing the whole day. Music by Coco Robert, aka Coco The DJ, kept party goers dancing for hours. The soirée served as a viral campaign ahead of the launch of Jim Allen’s Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, set to open June 28.

The true star of the party, Fanning, was sparkling in a floral-printed Cinq à Sept dress and Christian Louboutin heels, offering a sophisticated and sweet summer style. CEO of Swiss watch manufacturer Zenith Watches, Julien Tornare, presented the Alienist star with an elegant Elite Ladies Moon Phase with Diamonds wristwatch, which she kept on her wrist while posing for pictures and mingling with guests throughout the party. Notable attendees included Fanning’s boyfriend Henry Frye, designer Andrew Warren and former Commissioner of the NYCPD Raymond Kelly.

Fanning is slated to appear in this summer’s highly anticipated blockbuster hit, Ocean’s 8, a heist comedy spin-off of Steven Soderbergh’s trilogy, due out June 8.

Meet the Hamptons’ Queen of Design https://dujour.com/cities/interview-hamptons-interior-designer-kelly-behun/ Wed, 21 Mar 2018 16:00:31 +0000 Samuel Anderson http://dujour.com/?p=93526 Kelly Behun brings eccentricity to the Hampton’s billionaires’ lane

The post Meet the Hamptons’ Queen of Design appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
As with many wealthy enclaves, it’s easy to imagine the Hamptons as a symbolic destination – a Nancy Meyers kitchen in the sky – rather than a physical place. But it was the land’s natural beauty that has drawn interior designer Kelly Behun to the East End for a quarter-century. “In the fundamental ways, the ones that really matter, it hasn’t changed a bit — it’s still one of the most beautiful places anywhere,” she says.

In that quarter-century, Behun’s immediate surroundings have evolved. Today, she shares a 22,000-square-foot beachfront estate on Southampton’s Meadow Lane (a.k.a. “billionaires’ lane”) with her husband, iStar Financial Chairman and CEO Jay Sugarman, and their two kids, flanked by neighbors such as Ian Schrager and Calvin Klein. While their sprawling glass-and-stone masterpiece might be straight out of a Sex and the City dream sequence, Behun’s path to peak Hamptons was gradual. “I’ve been coming to the Hamptons for 25 years, first renting, then buying a small house; then when our kids were born, building our dream house.

Behun splits her time between the Hamptons and Manhattan, where she runs her high-powered interior design firm, banging out projects for the likes of the Delano hotel in Miami, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, all while producing a line of furniture and homewares, Kelly Behun Studio. Both in her personal and professional life, it’s clear Behun has a gift for making dreams a reality.

A native of the Pittsburgh suburb of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, Behun always strove toward higher ground. “I moved to New York directly after college because I had always imagined myself eventually living here,” she says. “I had romanticized it from movies and books my whole life and didn’t really have a Plan B, so was greatly relieved when I finally moved here and discovered it really was all that and more.”

But it was her hometown roots that magnetized her to the Hamptons in the first place. “It’s funny, because whenever my family visits the Hamptons, we always remark that it is a bit like Sewickley-by-the-sea, so I guess it wasn’t a coincidence that I was drawn here as an adult.”

That said, Behun’s tastes have made no small impact on the Hamptons landscape. A former protégé of Philippe Starck, Behun’s proclivity toward modernism is in razor-sharp contrast to the archetypical shabby-chic Hamptons home.

Her and Sugarman’s property’s expansive grounds, anchored by a show-stopping infinity pool, have made it the perfect venue for their causes; the home has been the backdrop to fundraisers for God’s Love We Deliver, New Yorkers for Children and the David Lynch Foundation, which teaches Transcendental Meditation to at-risk populations. And while Behun and Sugarman’s 25-year marriage may be one of the most grounded partnerships in all of Long Island, Behun says meditation is no substitute for communication — especially when it comes to decorating. “We generally agree on things, but of course a few times I’ve had to pull out that old chestnut of a threat, ‘Do I come to your office and tell you how to do your job?’” she says. “But I get my way.”

Adam Miller’s Guide to The Hamptons https://dujour.com/cities/adam-miller-travel-guide-to-hamptons-new-york/ Wed, 06 Sep 2017 14:30:09 +0000 Editors of DuJour http://dujour.com/?p=88407 See where this top attorney spends his time out East on Long Island

The post Adam Miller’s Guide to The Hamptons appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
As the head of Adam Miller Group, P.C., the go-to real estate law firm based out of Bridgehampton, Adam Miller knows the East End. When he first made the move from Manhattan 10 years ago, Miller aimed to combine his large firm experience with localized knowledge, providing a niche, top-tier experience for the area’s high-net-worth clients. Since then, the firm has acted as counsel on over $2 billion in real estate transactions. Says Miller, “The really important thing for me is big firm experience but local expertise.” Miller has partnered with Brian Desesa, who brings a specialization in land use and 10 years of experience on the Southampton town zoning board, of which he is now Vice Chair. Having lived and worked on transactions in both Manhattan and the Hamptons, which does Miller prefer? “The Hamptons,” he says, “I find it to be much more personal. [Clients] are often more engaged in this process because they’re not passing this on to some associate who is handling that business. I enjoy it here because it’s just easier to transact business that way, to meet people. Whereas in the city, most of the day is spent in a high rise.” After a decade of living and working on the luxe Long Island enclave, Miller has discovered some top-notch places for everything from a business lunch to a mid-week meditation. We tapped the attorney for his list of the very best local spots.

Cup of Joe: Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee in Amagansett for the real rocket fuel. However, since my office is so close to Starbucks in Bridgehampton, every day at around 3 pm I treat everyone to an afternoon cup to keep them on their toes.

Power Lunch: Candy Kitchen. Old school. Chicken over Greek (no onions). Estia’s and Pierre’s are certainly in my rotation.

Cocktail Hour: The Beacon in the summer. Since my client is the owner, there is always a warm seat for me.

Retail Therapy: I enjoy doing a round of retail therapy in East Hampton. On the weekends I take my two daughters and we can always find something to buy. Sometimes, it’s a book at BookHampton, sometimes a pair of workout shorts at Lulu. James Perse and Varvatos are a must.

Feild Trip: LongHouse Reserve, which is very close to my house. I can go there to meditate.

Date Night: East Hampton Grill. The food is so consistent even in the winter. My birthday is in February and the fire makes it cozy and warm.

Hidden Gem: The beaches anywhere along Napeague. It’s where I proposed to my fiancée.

Hugely successful, the sixth annual Hamptons Paddle & Party for Pink raised nearly $2 million for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) on August 6, 2017. Even more impressively, since its inception, the event has raised nearly $8 million for BCRF to advance groundbreaking breast cancer research. Some notable participants included Jimmy Buffett and Katie Lee. The race was followed by a sunset bash at Fairview in Bridgehampton, where more than 550 guests danced to the tunes of the event headliner and world-renowned musician and producer DJ Questlove. Nestled along the South Fork, the Hamptons is Long Island’s most treasured region and a home away from home for many New Yorkers. Here, you can find luxe boutiques next door to historic inns and classic seafood joints in charming hamlets such as Greenport, Water Mill and Bridgehampton. Below are our favorite spots for a perfect weekend on the East End.

Where to Stay:

With a fresh look by the up-and-coming Brooklyn–based design firm Studio Tack, the Sound View, located in the charming hamlet of Greenport, opens this season with fresh accents of rich woods and durable textiles. A waterfront restaurant, piano bar and private beach will make it a welcome stopover for oenophiles visiting the North Fork’s vineyards.

Where to Eat:

Forget surf ‘n’ turf. This season the best Hamptons cuisine is all about fresh, European flavors. At EMP Summer House, an East Hampton pop-up by the Eleven Madison Park team opening in June, Daniel Humm and Will Guidara provide a fabulous new setting for seafood-centric dishes like grilled fish and bouillabaisse. Newly renovated, Oreya reopens in Southampton’s Capri Hotel with a refreshed menu by 21-year-old wunderkind chef Greg Grossman (formerly of Alinea and Georgica), which includes a decadent foie gras hummus. The minds behind Manhattan’s Amali and Il Cantinori are set to debut Calissa, in Water Mill, where Executive Chef Dominic Rice—an alum of Jean-Georges and Narcissa—brings a Greek flair to the leafy enclave. And at Sag Harbor’s just-opened Lulu Kitchen & Bar, chef Philippe Corbet serves up specialties like wood-fired pizzas and a grilled whole black bass. (Request a table near the open kitchen to see him and his team work their magic.)

Calissa

What to Do:

This summer, Bridgehampton’s Topping Rose House debuts communal Friday night dinner parties in its rustic barn. Expect passed appetizers and specialties like Parmesan-encrusted chicken and tuna tartare prepared by the chefs at the inn’s new Jean-Georges restaurant.

Triptych: Clifford Ross Studio

Starting July 16, multimedia artist Clifford Ross installation Light | Waves takes over The Parrish Museum’s lobby, gallery and façade. For the piece, a meditation on the Long Island Sound, Ross developed a new way to digitally print his hurricane photographs on maple veneer. He pairs these with massive LED screens projecting all-encompassing visions of crashing waves. “I have been obsessed with the ocean my whole life, starting with my childhood on the beaches of Amagansett,” he says. “The waves and shifting light of the East End of Long Island are completely mesmerizing.” Following Ross show will be a 35-artist survey of photorealist paintings—some so vivid they’ll make you do a double take—opening on August 6.

Ten years ago, the Bridgehampton (BARN) studio opened as SoulCycle’s second-ever studio, and today they’ve opened up the space underneath, in partnership with lululemon, for an exciting Hamptons pop-up to last through the summer until September 4th.

“Below the Barn,” a 2,200-square-foot space located at 264 Butter Lane, will feature a complete cycling studio with additional space for hangouts, wellness sessions, shopping and, really, anything you’d like to do during a summer-well-spent in the East End.

Inside “Below the Barn” at 264 Butter Lane, Bridgehampton, NY 11932

Wellness programming (like a HIIT class with a lululemon ambassador or a session of The Class by Taryn Toomey) will be offered throughout the season, there’s a lounge area that features Montauk Juice Factory for your sipping pleasures, a shoppable capsule collection sold exclusively in the space and a calendar full of fun events (like flower arranging, a ping pong tournament and live music every every Friday from 4-6pm).

Think less gross, sweaty workouts and more sweaty workouts + fun hang times in the Hamptons. Sold.

The Stage is Set at Surf Lodge https://dujour.com/cities/surf-lodge-summer-concert-series-montauk/ Fri, 30 Jun 2017 16:00:36 +0000 Rachel Wallace http://dujour.com/?p=86891 This super-trendy spot has been hosting intimate concerts for ten seasons now

The post The Stage is Set at Surf Lodge appeared first on DuJour.

On the Tuesday after Memorial Day Weekend, Guest of a Guest ran a headline that seemed to have been ripped right from the mouths of countless New Yorkers—Literally Everyone Was at The Surf Lodge This Weekend. And indeed, socialites like rich kid of Beverly Hills EJ Johnson, literal princess Olympia of Greece and more posed for the society blog’s lenses and sipped Grey Goose Le Grand Fizz cocktails while ringing in the de facto first weekend of summer at the Montauk party spot-meets-hotel.

Grey Goose at the Surf Lodge

The long weekend also marked the start of Surf Lodge’s tenth annual summer concert series, a musical tradition that, like the rest of Montauk, has exploded in recent years. According to owner Jayma Cardoso, some of the “surf staples” on this year’s lineup—like singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter—have been taking the property’s small Fort Pond-adjacent stage since Surf Lodge’s inception in 2008. But this year’s lineup also includes some seriously heavy hitters like Lupe Fiacso (July 16), Grammy-nominee Anderson .Paak (July 30) and ZZ Ward (August 12).

With the hot spot’s second big weekend of summer upon us, DuJour caught up with Cardoso about her favorite musical memories from the past decade.

Over the past ten seasons, which Surf Lodge concert was your favorite?

I think Willie Nelson. Just because it took me four years to finally get him. We had his son perform and I think everybody else on his label perform before his manager would allow Willie. It was incredible. And Jimmy Buffet jumped in and performed with him. I feel like he’s so true to Montauk. It was hard to top that. We’ve had really great bands that are super big like The Flaming Lips and The Kills. But I also have to talk about those smaller bands who are now really big. Leon Bridges performed for us three years ago, and he’s now opening up major concert halls and nominated for a Grammy. There are so many people—like Gary Clark [also].

Is it always important for you to highlight new, up-and-coming bands?

For sure, it’s always been part of our series to get the young up-and-comers who are on the cusp. It’s funny because I just tried to book Leon Bridges again this year, and they were like, “I think he has one date available.”

The Surf Lodge

What are you looking forward to for this summer?

Music wise, Ben Harper. Arts wise, we’re working with this incredible artist Richard Phillips. He’s curating this series for us with some really amazing emerging artists. Our first one was over Memorial Day weekend. We actually asked Richard himself to do a show with us and he was like, “Well, I think I have a different idea for you guys. I think I’ll curate your entire series this summer with people that you may not know yet but they are incredibly talented and doing things that are catching my eye.” Sometimes you just have one idea in mind and then organically it just goes a different direction. I think that for me has been the biggest surprise for the summer so far. I’m really excited about that.

This Fourth of July weekend, catch Rubblebucket on Friday at 6pm, Bob Moses on Saturday at 6pm and Bully on Sunday at 6pm at Surf Lodge. For the full summer concert series lineup, head to surflodge.com

Montauk’s Real Estate Makeover https://dujour.com/cities/montauk-real-estate-market/ Mon, 03 Oct 2016 15:00:11 +0000 Frances Dodds http://dujour.com/?p=78364 The once-quiet East Hampton hamlet is now ringing

Montauk—with its wild dunes, walk-up hamburger joints and grainy seafood hovels—has long been the sleepier and slightly shabbier sister of nearby Southampton and East Hampton proper. But the decrees that govern New York City real estate also govern its summer havens, so what was once passé now cashes in on the nostalgic dollar. It’s not news that Montauk prices are rocketing—but to what heights has surprised even longtime locals. According to a report by the Corcoran Group, in the first quarter of 2016, median sales prices in the far-east reaches of Long Island’s southern shore jumped 25 percent—to $1.038 million, from $831,000 just last year.

A private great room at Gurney’s.

Perhaps the town’s most prominent development has been the ongoing renovation of Gurney’s Montauk Resort, the 90-year-old institution that in December bought out the neighboring Panoramic View resort for $63.9 million. Part of the former Panoramic is now being transformed into The Residences at Gurney’s, 15 oceanfront homes priced between $4.7 million and $12 million. Around the same time as the Gurney’s acquisition, J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler sold Andy Warhol’s famed Montauk estate for a cool $48.7 million.

An exterior view of Andy Warhol’s famed former estate.

As area prices shoot skyward, the hospitality industry has wasted little time catering to the town’s trendier new inhabitants. New York culinary staples Tacombi and Grey Lady have both opened Montauk outposts, and business mogul Marc Rowan has underwritten two new eateries in town. But while local business owners welcome the influx of patrons, many natives are disgruntled by Montauk’s makeover. Last summer, strict noise ordinances were enforced after some 300 locals protested the legions of partygoers who’ve flooded the once-sleepy, nature-centric community. But times change, and if you’re not much for bird-watching on beach cruisers, there’s now a SoulCycle just down the road.

Why Fall in the Hamptons is Underrated https://dujour.com/cities/hamptons-fall-activities-vacation/ Tue, 27 Sep 2016 18:00:04 +0000 The Editors Of DuJour http://new.dujour.com/?p=48483 5 tastemakers share their favorite ways to spend time on the East End during cooler months

The post Why Fall in the Hamptons is Underrated appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Summer is certainly the season in the Hamptons, but it’s a matter of debate whether it’s the best. The fall, when the crowds dissipate and the air cools, is, if not the most delightful time of a year, then at least a uniquely delightful one. The water is still warm and the farm stands overflowing with fruits and vegetables, but the mad crush of the summer social scene vanishes along with the humidity. In fact, it kind of feels like what summer in the Hamptons used to feel like: a vacation. We asked five East End tastemakers what they love best about fall in the Hamptons.

Jay McInerneyauthor

“Fall here is great because most of the New Yorkers are home. I love the way it gets colder and socially it’s slower. In August there are parties every night—screenings, benefits, friends wanting to show off their houses—in the 1980s, when I started coming out, there was not a lot of organized activity. In the fall, the light is more beautiful and it’s easier to envision what F. Scott Fitzgerald called “the fresh green breast of the new world.” You can imagine what Jackson Pollack or Willem de Kooning or Peter Matthiessen saw, what it used to be like.”

Laurent Tourondelchef

“I think everything is beautiful about the Hamptons in the fall, the leaves turn a different color, the sun gets very red. And what I really like is going to beach, the sea, it changes, the tides are different, it’s rougher. Also, there are less people, less pressure, it’s more just the locals. I don’t know if I can call it a good thing, because I have a business, but I like it.”

Terrie Sultandirector, Parrish Art Museum

“The thing I like about the fall is when the air starts to smell different and the leaves start to turn and even though it’s still warm, there’s a little crispness to the air. The color palette changes, even the farmsteads change color, from the greens and yellows of summer to oranges and the heavy reds of beets. And the nicest thing about being here in the fall is that people turn their attention to things that they can do inside, like the museum. This will be our third fall, but every day is a new adventure.”

Curtis Bashawhotelier

“It’s easier to explore the Hamptons in the fall, when you don’t have the crush of traffic. You can go kayaking, wine tasting on the North Shore—there’s just so much to do that doesn’t involve the beach. One of my favorite things to do in the fall is to ride a bike from Sag Harbor to the South Fork ferry, take it to Shelter Island. Then you can quickly traverse Shelter Island and take the North Shore ferry to Greenport. The ferries break up the bike ride and give the trip a sense of adventure.”

Katie Leecookbook author and television personality

“As someone who likes to cook, when the fall vegetables start coming in, it’s a reason to celebrate. I go to The Green Thumb in Water Mill quite a bit in the fall to pick up squash, pumpkins and apples, and I find myself going to Mecox Bay Dairy in the fall to buy cheeses. I also find myself dining out a lot more in autumn; we have great restaurants in the Hamptons, but in the summertime it’s so hard to get a table anywhere that I usually just eat at home.”

Celebrities and influencers of all ages gathered at Gurney’s Montauk Yacht Club and Resort over Memorial Day weekend for the DuJour summer cover party. Among the notable guests was daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Suri Cruise. Hosted by DuJour Founder and CEO, Jason Binn, as well as Whispering Angel, Aurae LifestyleHard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, and Zenith Watches, the event was a summer blast for all.

Suri, 12, who is usually seen at high-profile events with Holmes by her side, took on the Hamptons social scene solo this time. Dakota Fanning, the summer issue cover star, greeted Suri, who showed visible excitement upon meeting The Alienist star. For the rest of the afternoon, Suri mingled with stars of “MasterChef Junior” and Broadway’s “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

Mecox Gardens
Situated on three acres in lovely Southampton, Mecox Gardens’ founding location will play host this summer to a unique “pool house” installation erected by Cocoon9, Chris Burch’s new prefab home design and construction company. Visitors to the store will be able to tour one of the venture’s prefabricated outdoor rooms—they also manufacture and sell (slightly) larger structures that are suitable for use as sleek, minimalist stand-alone homes-, perfect for more remote vacation properties—each of which will be dolled up with decks, plants and gardens by the experts at Mecox. Interested customers will be able to purchase the entire kit and caboodle in one fell swoop; a pool house or garden room complete with landscaping makes for an instant backyard upgrade.

A New York City-based luxury denim label founded in 2011 by Scott Morrison, 3×1 opens its second atelier in mid-May on Southampton’s Main Street. The 1,800-square-foot space, designed by Morrison, mimics the original SoHo location’s industrial look, compete with the iconic denim wall. In addition to the ready-to-wear line, the new shop will produce bespoke blue jeans on a speeded-up timeline to accommodate summer visitors in town for only a short vacation.

English Country Home and Antiques
Opened twenty years ago by a pair of British-born brothers—one of whom manned the shop while the other scoured their native land for stock—English Country Antiques is a Hamptons mainstay. Now the store, which has long been beloved by locals and visitors alike for its hard-to-beat selection of, yes, antiques from the English countryside, is branching out. Starting this summer, shoppers will be able to buy newly-made pieces as well as older finds; a line of modern furniture includes gorgeous pieces like the glass expandable table pictured below.

With celebrity devotees like Lena Dunham and Lily Aldridge, organic meal delivery service Sakara Life has taken off like wildfire. Originally based just in New York, the plant-dense, nutrient-rich drinks, snacks and meals are now available on the West Coast and throughout the Hamptons. The brand’s two gorgeous founders, Danielle DuBoise and Whitney Tingle, spend a lot of their summers out East. Here, they share their favorite haunts with DuJour.

What do you love about visiting the Hamptons?

Whitney: “Disconnecting for a bit. That rejuvenated feeling you have after a weekend in the Hamptons is not just from getting out of the city for a few days, but from how good this change of pace is for your health. Fresh air, sunshine, connecting to the ground and nutritious, local foods do the body so much good.”

Bandier in Southampton

What is the best way to start your morning in the Hamptons?

Danielle: “Listen to the waves while sipping Sakara Beauty Water. There’s nothing more calming and rejuvenating!”

Favorite on-the-go lunch spot in the Hamptons?

Whitney: “La Fondita in Amagansett
Danielle: “Round Swamp Farm”

What beauty products can’t you live without this summer?

Whitney: “Bee Yummy Skin Food
Danielle: “Jiva Apoha Body Oils”

How do you practice beauty from the inside out?

Whitney: “Nourish your body with clean, whole foods. Plants have a lot of medicinal properties in them that hydrate, purify and plump your skin, so focus all of your beauty efforts on what you are putting into your body, not what you are putting on top.”

Soul Cycle

Where do you go to break a sweat?

Danielle: “SoulCycle and Physique57 are always good, reliable sweats!”

Best romantic date spot?

Whitney: “The Crow’s Nest in Montauk”
Danielle: “The beach. It doesn’t get much better than wine, fish tacos and a sunset.”

Chef Eric Miller’s favorite thing about East Hampton’s Bay Kitchen Bar (39 Gann Road; baykitchenbar.com) is easy to see. “It’s got the best view on the East End,” he says. Guests also love the vista, which complements Miller’s seafood menu whether it’s August or October.

While most East End restaurants close in the autumn, some of the area’s best eateries are keeping the stoves on year round. One such spot is Bridgehampton’s Topping Rose House (1 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike; toppingrosehouse.com), which serves three farm-sourced meals a day every day and also boasts 22 guest rooms, a stunning pool and a Naturopathica spa. Nick & Toni’s (136 North Main Street; nickandtonis.com) is another all-year favorite for East Enders who clamor for the baked clams, thin-crust pizza and tender roast chicken.

Sag Harbor Faces Big Changes https://dujour.com/cities/sag-harbor-real-estate-market-retail/ Fri, 20 Feb 2015 14:58:49 +0000 Kim Velsey http://dujour.com/?p=53814 As the real estate boom hits a once-sleepy Hamptons village, locals and newcomers alike are determined to protect the area's unique atmosphere

The post Sag Harbor Faces Big Changes appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
The best thing about Sag Harbor, longtime habitués agree, is not how much the town has changed but how much it hasn’t: Main Street still has an old-fashioned pharmacy and pizza parlor, plenty of places to buy pre-faded T-shirts and nautical tchotchkes and a variety store that stocks everything from rubber balls to spools of thread.

“You feel like you’re in a New England fishing town,” says Michael Namer, the CEO of New York-based Alfa Development, who has owned a house in Sag Harbor for decades. “Development plays out very different here than elsewhere in the Hamptons.”

But even if Ralph Lauren has yet to leave his stamp on Sag, it’s abundantly clear that it is no longer the unassuming little town it once was. Nowadays, BMWs vie for parking on Main Street, Donna Karan has an outpost of her Urban Zen shop on Bay Street (her daughter runs the celebrated Tutto Il Giorno restaurant next door), and one of the penthouses at Watchcase—the former Bulova watch factory that developers Cape Advisors are transforming into a super-luxe condo, replete with an on-site spa and year-round saltwater pool—was recently listed for $10.2 million. (Move-ins are expected to begin around the end of this year, though the development was already sufficiently polished to host a designer showcase in June.)

Sag Harbor

The American Hotel in downtown Sag Harbor

But while Watchcase’s multi-million-dollar condos are indicative of the “new” Sag, the developer has, in true local fashion, been eager to keep the building looking like the old Sag, both inside and out. Not only did Cape Advisors hire architectural preservationist powerhouse Beyer Blinder Belle for the project, but on a recent tour, Cape Advisors executive David Kronman pointed out details like the ceiling’s original exposed yellow pine beams, which were restored with ground-up walnut shells rather than through the more common, but much harsher, practice of sandblasting.

Of the 43 units released last summer, 35 were in contract as of this June, the month that the 65-unit development’s remaining condos (with the exception of the “bungalows”) were listed. Both New Yorkers eager for a no-headache second home and locals looking to downsize have driven sales, according to local brokers.

But the fact that the town feels like an open secret has, if anything, made locals more protective. “Change is not necessarily good in Sag Harbor,” cautions Sotheby’s Robert Florio. “It was a working class town, famous for being the un-Hamptons. The people who live in Sag Harbor don’t want to lose that.” The real estate market, he notes, “may be the one signal point where you see change.”

Indeed, several big sales have already happened this year. In February, a 12,000-square-foot Tudor mansion on six acres in the waterfront enclave of North Haven sold for $31.7 million. The seller, Richard Demato, was downsizing to the “Howell House,” a 9,000-square-foot mansion in the village, where he owns an art gallery. That home, which went for $9.75 million, was the year’s second most expensive (so far). Even comparatively modest properties in the village now fetch between $1.5 million and $9 million, according to Douglas Elliman broker Gioia DiPaolo. “They’re sweet historic houses,” she says. “They don’t have swimming pools, but they’re charming, charming, charming.” (She added, however, that some newcomers are working around the inherent size limitations by buying up several properties and turning them into compounds.)

In response to the influx of moneyed new residents, many New York-based retailers and restaurateurs—among them perfumer Bond No. 9, Italian bistro Doppio and Harlow and the first outpost of Nobu co-founder Richie Notar’s Manhattan eatery—are also flocking to town. Or, at least, they’re trying to: Locals have their own ways of saving Sag, Sotheby’s broker Michael Daly says, relating the story of a major retailer who tried to rent a spot in the village last year, only to be rebuffed by an owner who wanted a local business.

“Unlike East Hampton, which has become a mall, Sag Harbor still has a wonderful, colorful, fabulous scene,” says Keith Green, the Halstead broker who’s selling Harbor’s Edge, a new 15-unit waterfront condo development where prices range from $2.5 million to $6.5 million. And despite the bigger yachts in the harbor and the influx of traffic and upscale shops, DiPaolo says that the town has a way of showing newcomers how to behave.

“I’ve definitely seen some tantrums,” she admits. “People who are new in town don’t always know they’re supposed to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, but they quickly realize that they shouldn’t be showing certain digits when people try to cross the street.” Overall, the growth hasn’t led to a wholesale alteration of the atmosphere. “It really seems that people want to come here because they enjoy blending in with the local scene,” DiPaolo explains, “not because they want to change it.”

It’s unusual for a real estate mogul to produce a photography book, but Bruce Mosler, chairman of Cushman & Wakefield Inc., achieved the feat seamlessly. My Montauk is a collection of Mosler’s best snaps of the East End outpost taken from his 40-foot fishing yacht during his many visits to the famed shore (a trek he made from his base in East Hampton). With nearly 50 photographs, including shots of the shoreline, inhabitants and locales, this book may just be Mosler’s best catch yet.

Proceeds from the book will support the Fisher House Foundation, which provides free housing to military families while a family member is receiving medical care.

Sugar Crush https://dujour.com/cities/hamptons/sugar-facts-mark-hyman-healthy-child-healthy-world/ Tue, 09 Sep 2014 13:46:26 +0000 The Editors Of DuJour http://dujour.com/?post_type=articles&p=47209 Dr. Mark Hyman on the scary effects of this sweet stuff

The post Sugar Crush appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
The safety and happiness of the world’s children is of the utmost importance—that’s why the organization Healthy Child Healthy World makes it its sole purpose to protect them in every way possible. In the case of its second annual summer benefit, that was done through a bit of education. The event’s keynote speaker was Dr. Mark Hyman, of The UltraWellness Center, and his main goal was to teach the crowd about the dangers of something kids love a lot: sugar.

Here, Dr. Hyman elaborates on what he considers to be its most worrisome effects and how we can all raise our kids to be sweetly satisfied sans the sugar high.

How is sugar a toxin?

When I say sugar is a toxin, I’m talking about the pharmacological doses many people consume today. Consider this: the average kid eats about 34 teaspoons (or about half a pound) of sugar a day, and much of it comes from soda and other sources of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). These pharmacological doses of sugar—and keep in mind, white flour and honey fall into the sugar category—have made us fat and sick, switching on numerous obesity and diabetes genes. In fact, they turned on all the chronic disease genes in our body today. This is the largest uncontrolled drug experiment ever conducted on humans. Food is information, and HFCS as well as other Frankenfood sweeteners have created serious hormonal havoc as well as stressing out the liver and other organs. Researchers have found mercury in HFCS. They’ve also learned HFCS punches little holes into your gut, creating what we call leaky gut and contributing to inflammation.

Does this mean kids can’t eat birthday cake or celebrate Halloween?

Considering that it comes from real sugar and not HFCS, the occasional piece of birthday cake or whatever dessert isn’t going to create problems. But I strongly emphasize the word “occasional.” Halloween used to be October 31. Now, it starts in late September when drugstore aisles line shelves with HFCS-filled treats and carries into New Year’s Day. For some people, “a little” is a slippery slope because it’s such a nebulous term.

Are sugar alternatives like stevia or agave any better? Is there such a thing as a “better” sugar?

My advice is to give up stevia, aspartame, sucralose, sugar alcohols like xylitol and malitol, and all of the other heavily used and marketed sweeteners unless you want to slow down your metabolism, gain weight and become an addict. Many of us have lost touch with what constitutes “sweet,” and we have to retrain our taste buds to appreciate the natural sweetness of, say, natural vanilla or roasted almonds.

Where should parents and caregivers be watching out for sugar when it’s not clearly labeled?

There are at least 57 names for sugar, and manufacturers cleverly disguise it within ingredients you wouldn’t recognize as sugar. Anything ending in “ose” is sugar. If food labels bewilder you, simply switch to whole, unprocessed foods and you can guarantee you won’t get HFCS or other man-made sweeteners.

Where does fruit fit into the equation?

Fruit is nature’s sweetness wrapped up with nutrients, antioxidants and fiber. I especially love low-glycemic fruit such as wild blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, blackberries, and even kiwis. Unless they have metabolic syndrome or other blood sugar imbalances, most kids do okay with some higher-glycemic fruit like mango or pineapple, although lower-glycemic choices are always better. Fruit juice is another story. Stripped of its fiber and often heavily processed, it provides a huge sugar surge similar to soda. Fruit juice is mostly fructose, the most metabolically damaging sugar that wreaks havoc on the liver, and can have as much sugar if not more than a soda. Quick answer: Keep fruit and skip the juice.

This Saturday, a rainbow of bikinis and paddle boards can be found on the beaches of Sag Harbor for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s annual “The Hamptons Paddle & Party for Pink” fundraiser. Along with a paddle board race, there will be a sunset party at the home of Richard and Lisa Perry, as well an auction featuring paddle boards designed by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Martha Stewart, Tory Burch, Aerin Lauder and DKNY, among numerous others.

Moreover, workout goddess Tracy Anderson will be partnering with the fundraiser, and she and Gwyneth Paltrow will be auctioning off a private two-hour workout, valued at $15,000. Tracy is a close friend of Maria Baum, who has been the event co-chair for numerous years, and she had this to say of her friend: “She’s one of the most incredible women I’ve ever met in my life, so it was a no brainer for me to want to get behind her event. Paddle boarding meant a lot to her when she was fighting breast cancer. For her it was empowering, and it was her time to go out and deal with what nature had given her, and then go back to her family and her four children and put on that amazing smile and strength that so many women do.

Fans of Anna Kaiser’s high-intensity AKT in Motion workout in New York City—a group that includes hard-bodied celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Kelly Ripa—won’t have to miss hour-long dance-based interval and circuit training sessions in the summertime. Starting this season, they can head to two new pop-ups in the Southampton and Sag Harbor locations of Hamptons Gym Corp.

“It was easier to offer two locations rather than choosing just one and asking all of our clients, from Montauk to Southampton, to shuttle back and forth,” says Kaiser. The exercise pro, who rents a quaint cottage in Montauk, wanted it to be easy for her devotees to get their fitness fix: “I’m extremely committed to making sure our clients don’t lose their results and momentum over the summer.”

Beyond the Organic: A Safer Home for Our Kids https://dujour.com/cities/hamptons/healthy-child-healthy-world-hamptons-luncheon/ Mon, 12 Aug 2013 00:00:00 +0000 The Editors Of DuJour http://www.dujour.com/article/healthy-child-healthy-world-hamptons-luncheon/ Before the Hamptons welcomes Healthy Child Healthy World's first summer luncheon, DuJour chats with CEO Gigi Lee Chang

The post Beyond the Organic: A Safer Home for Our Kids appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Any parent knows that the health of their child is of the highest importance, but in a city like New York—where ultra-convenient lifestyles thrive—the tools, resources and valuable information needed to keep them safe aren’t always as easily accessible as the nearest Whole Foods. More than ever, parents want to protect their children from toxic chemicals and other harmful substances found in their food, their toys and their own home, and Healthy Child Healthy World, a non-profit on the scene for over 20 years, is empowering parents with the knowledge to do so by raising awareness, translating the science and identifying healthier habits.

The organization is heading to the Hamptons on August 20 for its inaugural summer luncheon, bringing together over 150 like-minded tastemakers, parents and influencers including moms Molly Sims, Kelly Rutherford and Tiffani Thiessen. DuJour recently chatted with Gigi Lee Chang, CEO of the organization and a New York mother herself, to find out what’s in store.

How did you get involved with HCHW?

I came to hear about the organization eight years ago when I was starting my own company. I had founded an organic food company, which was and continues to be a supporter of the organization. And then about three years ago, I joined the board of directors. Then last year, we had a transition in leadership so they asked me to step in and be the CEO.

How have you seen the work of HCHW grow since your start up until this point?

I think that in the earlier days of the organization, there was more focus on advocacy and legislation. And in recent years, there’s been much more of a push towards educating parents. I think we’ve come to realize that that’s how you really create change. You want to give parents the tools so they can feel empowered to take action, and through those actions, you can affect the marketplace.

It’s kind of this push-pull where certain organizations focus on the legislative and the advocacy piece—the push side—and then we focus on the consumer education so they demand different products, better regulation and more control to pull the market. You really need both, and we found that for us, with the voice that we have and the history being started by two parents, we wanted to focus there.

This is HCHW’s first Hamptons luncheon. What’s the idea behind it?

The organization, historically, was started in the L.A. area and our headquarters are still in L.A., but in the last three or four years, we’ve gotten more of a New York base. So we wanted to have an event where we can bring together our supporters and highlight the organization, because you can do a lot of things virtually, but people always like an event. And then summer in the Hamptons is just such a natural [idea].

So are you seeing more and more people New York with similar values?

In New York, there are people who are aware and this-way minded, but there’s not as many as say, Los Angeles.

Why do you think that is?

I think generally it’s the New York lifestyle. We’re not so close to nature, we’re not in mid-70 degree weather everyday, 360 days a year. So people aren’t thinking about these issues as much as when you have a garden or you have access to the outdoors. I think also New York convenience plays a larger role than anything. For example, if you’re out of dish soap and your local bodega doesn’t have [anything non-toxic], you’re just going to buy what’s there because you need dish soap. It’s just convenient.

The flip side is that there are people with similar values here, but there hasn’t been a way to bring them together. I’ve met a lot of people here who have always lived this lifestyle. One of our hosts, she’s in the fashion world, and her parents are big fashion people, and she’s one of the most committed, dedicated people. She makes her own home cleaner. You wouldn’t have necessarily thought that, but when I first met her, it was just one of those things where she was just like, You’re my people!

There’s going to be a panel at the event. Are there any hot topics right now that you’re hoping will be discussed?

We have four really great panelists. Each of them will really cover their own topics, so we’re going to talk about food, allergens and GMOs, which is a hot topic as we start going into fall. There’s sort of this catch-22 that people think if you have allergies, you need to keep things extra clean, but often times the cleaners themselves have ingredients that can be irritants and can also trigger allergies, so I think that’s really important for people to realize.

Then we have somebody who’s going to talk about beauty and personal care. Sixty percent of what’s put on your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream, which is another important thing to realize. For example, the EU has banned 1,300 chemicals from being used in cosmetics. Guess how many the U.S. has banned? Eleven. Just another example of important things we don’t realize.

Blue Ribbon Style https://dujour.com/cities/hamptons/ralph-lauren-kids-fall-collection-hamptons-show/ Tue, 06 Aug 2013 05:00:00 +0000 Lindsey Keenan http://redesign.dujour.local/2013/08/ralph-lauren-kids-fall-collection-hamptons-show/ Ralph Lauren held a preppy Hamptons fashion show for its children's wear line's fall collection

The post Blue Ribbon Style appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Amid horses and hay bales at Wolffer Estate Vineyard‘s stables in Sagaponack on Monday, Ralph Lauren held a fashion show for the city’s smallest sartorialists. New York moms from Christie Brinkley to Edie Falco and their style-savvy children gathered to view the 63 preppy-chic looks Ralph Lauren Children will offer for fall.

Falco’s five-year-old daughter, Macy, was particularly taken with an orange coat, but the highlight for her? “The candy, of course!” said Falco. After show snacks included nutella and banana sandwiches and a candy bar laden with treats from Dylan Lauren’s Dylan’s Candy Bar. Following their front-row experience, the girls gathered for nail art and manicures from Essie and a braid bar replete with multi colored ribbons and roses. To cap of the afternoon, 14-year-old singer Madison Beer (who was discovered by Justin Bieber) took the stage and performed, closing with her unreleased single, “Melodies.”

Catching up with Jessica Alba, who had daughters Haven, 2, and Honor, 5, in tow, after the event, DuJour learned why she dresses her girls in Ralph Lauren. “I love the mix of colors and patterns,” Alba explained, “and all the layering, and the tall socks and tomboyish feel to the clothes. It’s all so cute!”

Click through the gallery to see photos from the show and looks from the new collection.

Upon entering the Water Mill home of Amy Treitel, financial manager, cabaret singer and host for the evening, guests were greeted by a white American Saddlebred horse. Beside it, models outfitted by Garner—a favorite of Esperanza Spalding and Suzy Amis Cameron. The bubbles were supplied by Dom Perignon with Trent Fraser, the brand’s vice president and close friend of Garner, on the scene. When he discovered that his dear friend Garner was holding a fashion show, the evening became what he called a “family project.”

Toby Boshak, Jeff Garner, and Trent Fraser

The Foundation supports talented up and comers in theater, dance and film by awarding individuals with scholarships, apprenticeships and fellowships. “Jeff is an emerging artist himself,” said the foundation’s executive director, Toby Boshak. “He was inspired by both Grace Kelly and Princess Grace,” and duly, his all-dress collection reflected both icons’ personas. Garner’s goal, he said, was to impart the “soft and feminine” aspects “exuded by the Princess.” The ecologically-driven designer works solely with sustainable and recycled vintage fabrics. Garner also grows plants for his own dyes, giving his creations a characteristic shimmer: Several of the frocks were a lustrous marigold hue, apropos of the princess’ favorite color, yellow.

Best friends and new Yorkers Yasha Wallin, a magazine writer and editor, and Emily Anderson, an art director, spend almost every summer weekend in Montauk exploring the area. Here, their top five.

MELET MERCANTILE’S ANNUAL SALE
“Eclectic collector Bob Melet’s four-year-old shop is a great spot for people watching- both Bruce Weber and Waris Ahluwalia are customers- and during one weekend every summer, he invites the public over for discounts, where you can score everything form old copies of Playboy to samurai swords.” 631-668-9080

Upping the Farm-to-Table Ante https://dujour.com/cities/hamptons/ruschmeyers-restaurant-the-smile-farm-to-table-menu/ Tue, 11 Jun 2013 00:00:00 +0000 Brooke Bobb http://www.dujour.com/article/ruschmeyers-restaurant-the-smile-farm-to-table-menu/ Montauk's Ruschmeyers executive chef enlists the help of The Smile team for a summer menu that lets nothing go to waste

The post Upping the Farm-to-Table Ante appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Farm-to-table has become a phrase as overused as organic produce, with restaurants constantly popping up boasting “locally sourced” or “farm fresh.” And whether or not you buy into the notion that your meal sprouted up or swam its way to your plate the very same day, it can be tough to distinguish the real distance and time it took for ingredients to make their way to the actual eatery. This season however, Ruschmeyers restaurant in Montauk is aiming to give customers a tried and true version of farm-to-table. In fact, they’re surrounded by the sources, with numerous local farms, stands and fisherman to choose from.

This summer, and continuing for the next two years, Ruschmeyers executive chef Brian Loiacono has brought on the team from The Smile in Mahattan to help craft a menu that not only uses the best of the week’s freshest locally sourced ingredients, but also all of the leftovers. Along with Matt Kliegman, Carlos Quirarte and Melia Marden, Loaicono says that, “it’s important for us to really take advantage of these amazing local ingredients, to be creative with our scraps so that we use every little bit.” “For example, we do a half romaine lobster salad and then we’ll have this pile of romaine scraps that are perfectly good, so we chill them and add them to a romaine soup with salmon and local micro greens.”

Aside from these menu items, The Smile team has put their twist on the now famous Ruschmeyers clam pizza, along with a soft shell crab poboy and minted snap peas. Recently new to the menu is a s’more in a jar, a dessert that keeps with the Rushmeyers adult summer camp vibe. As The Smile’s Melia Marden puts it, “it’s a locally driven menu and there is a real commonality between our food and Brian’s food—simple, clean, fresh.” For a real farm-to-table summertime meal, that’s the only stamp of approval we need.
