A toile de Jouy display welcomes guests to the boutique while the inside is designed to feel like a beachside resort home with raffia wallpaper, bamboo décor and furniture. The iconic poolside serves as an extension of this special shopping experience by incorporating exclusive Dior-patterned design accents in the new toile De Jouy Soleil pattern in bright coral pink. The citrus garden showcases pieces from the new Dioriviera collection and the Dior Spa offers guests an exclusive, tailored treatment program including the signature Californian Glow by Dior treatment. Cipriani brings its glamorous Italian aesthetic and signature Venetian cuisine to the heart of Beverly Hills for the brand’s first West Coast restaurant. Designed by Florentine architect Michele Bonan, who has collaborated with Cipriani on several other locations, Cipriani Beverly Hills features polished wood interiors with steel trim, distinctive brown leather chairs, Murano chandeliers, black and white fashion photography and deep green velvet accents. Fan favorite dishes, served at lunch and dinner, include beef carpaccio, tuna tartare, baked tagliolini with ham and vanilla meringue cake. The brand’s famed Bellini, of course, is also on offer. “We are very excited to open in the heart of Beverly Hills, in an area that sees many prestigious art and entertainment neighbors and we are looking forward to serving local and international customers alike,” says the brand’s U.S. president Maggio Cipriani.

LA-based entrepreneur and fashion enthusiast Natalie Bloomingdale founded the The SIL to give exposure to designers without an ecommerce platform. The site highlights emerging and often hard-to-find designers and provides a shopping destination for discerning women who want to wear pieces that not everyone else is wearing. Bloomingdale has partnered with The Beverly Hills Hotel on a The SIL x The Beverly Hills Hotel collaboration capsule which honors the legacy of Margaret Jane Anderson, the hotel’s original owner and operator. Anderson’s drive and ambition paved the way for the establishment of the “Pink Palace” hotel that was key to the launch of the city of Beverly Hills itself. As the proprietress, she played an instrumental role in the construction and development of The Beverly Hills Hotel amidst what was then open fields and farm land. The success of the hotel led to the city’s incorporation in 1914. Her leadership and entrepreneurial spirit left an indelible mark on the hospitality industry and city of Beverly Hills. Inspired by Anderson’s story, Bloomingdale worked with six female-owned SIL designers (Autumn Adeigbo, Cheeky Vintage, La Vie Style House, Tyler Ellis, Keehn Deutch and Smock London) to create clothing and accessories as a tribute to the trailblazing hotelier’s legacy.

Afternoon Tea Comes To The Maybourne Beverly Hills https://dujour.com/cities/los-angeles/afternoon-tea-comes-to-the-maybourne-beverly-hills/ Wed, 27 Apr 2022 19:19:33 +0000 Jessica Ritz https://dujour.com/?p=124223 Claridge's arrives stateside for a special afternoon tea residency at sister property, the Maybourne Beverly Hills

The post Afternoon Tea Comes To The Maybourne Beverly Hills appeared first on DuJour.

With fresh roses in bloom across Los Angeles, the wall holding bundles of fragrant hand bouquets at the Maybourne Beverly Hills x Claridge’s Afternoon Tea popup feels especially apt. It’s just one of the many pitch-perfect details to experience on the Maybourne Hotel’s transformed third floor garden terrace during the week-long Claridge’s Afternoon Tea service residency through April 30th—albeit with a few L.A.-specific twists.

Maybourne Beverly Hills x Claridge's Afternoon Tea

Maybourne Beverly Hills x Claridge’s Afternoon Tea

Maybourne executive chef Kaleo Adams, Claridge’s executive pastry chef Thibault Hauchard, and Foyer director Glenn Piper and crew hit the classic notes just right. The service begins with Laurent Perrier champagne before moving into the beloved ritual. There’s impeccably sliced Severn & Wye smoked salmon imported from London served with dill and lemon butter between flavorful, expertly trimmed slices of pumpernickel bread, and ham with celeriac and truffle mayonnaise sandwiches. Other gestures demonstrate how this 150-year-old tradition is amenable to evolving. Soft rye caraway bread holding thin sheets of five-day cured and smoked pastrami with sauerkraut dressing is a sophisticated reinterpretation the iconic Reuben, while Japanese-style egg salad that’s been all the rage since Konbi opened in Echo Park is enjoyed with the Vibrant Lemon Blend sourced in partnership with Henrietta Lovell of the Rare Tea Co. in London.

Maybourne Beverly Hills x Claridge's Afternoon Tea Service

Maybourne Beverly Hills x Claridge’s Afternoon Tea Service

The classic Claridge’s scone recipe paired with Cornish clotted cream and Marco Polo gelée (thanks to executive chef Martyn Nail) satisfies the die-hards, while a gluten-free version infused with Buddha’s Hand citrus and served with rhubarb jam from Sqirl is another deft L.A. touch. Everything looks and tastes better presented in Bernardaud Limoges china, in this case custom emblazoned with the host venue’s signature peachy pink.

Even if the afternoon feels a bit bittersweet given the brief residency, guests can anticipate this infusion of Mayfair coming to Beverly Hills for the longer term. (In the meantime, enjoy the ultra-chic intimate Maybourne Bar designed by André Fu with a cocktail program by Head Mixologist Chris Amirault that debuted earlier this year.) Among the various projects underway at the property helmed by London-based Bryan O’Sullivan includes an afternoon tea salon, readying for its closeup next year.

Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel

Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, has played host to everyone from Elvis Presley to Warren Beatty since it opened its doors in 1928. The property has 395 guest rooms (including 137 suites) spread out over two buildings—the 10-story Wilshire Wing and the 14-story Beverly Wing—in the heart of Beverly Hills, just steps from Rodeo Drive. Beverly Wilshire is home to Wolfgang Puck’s award-winning, Richard Meier–designed American steakhouse Cut, as well as The Blvd for all-day dining and people-watching on its Wilshire Boulevard–facing terrace. The rooftop pool area boasts a café and bar and several cabanas and lounge chairs scattered around a perfectly heated pool. This summer, the property will unveil a top-down renovation project designed by David Collins Studio. The refurbished guest rooms and suites will offer hints of drama and old Hollywood glamour with an inspired contemporary twist. Dressed in soft pastels and grays, the rooms represent Rodeo Drive luxury and provide guests with a sanctuary of comfort. “The vision created by David Collins Studio and Four Seasons brings the guest suites in line with the brand, the location and the level of luxury expected from the hotel’s guests,” says studio creative director Simon Rawlings.

The Beverly Hills Hotel

The historic Beverly Hills Hotel tapped world-renowned interior design studio Champalimaud Design to reimagine the hotel’s luxurious poolside area. The 11 newly redesigned private cabanas invite guests into an Instagram-worthy world of Old Hollywood glamour with pink-and-white-striped awnings, charming terrazzo coffee tables and, most notably, the hotel’s signature pink Martinique banana leaf wallpaper. The Pink Palace has been a staple in Hollywood for decades and this redesign marks the first time the hotel has reintroduced the iconic wallpaper since the 1940s. The new pink colorway was pulled from the company’s archives to complement the original green of the hotel’s signature interiors. The chic hideaways perfectly reflect the distinct design aesthetic of the Dorchester Collection’s Beverly Hills Hotel while offering a beautiful new outdoor experience for guests to bask in.

Hideaway Changes the Game at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena https://dujour.com/cities/hideaway-la-crypto-com-arena/ Fri, 18 Mar 2022 14:30:02 +0000 Jessica Ritz https://dujour.com/?p=123475 A private suite at the downtown sports stadium is the most luxurious place to take in a Los Angeles Lakers game

The post Hideaway Changes the Game at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Despite the growth of private clubs and exclusive experiences within large venues around the country, there’s still ample untapped potential to innovate. Hideaway at the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles is shifting this paradigm. A project envisioned by entertainment and hospitality entrepreneur Matt Ampolsky, and operated by Granted, an experiential ticketing and events platform based in Santa Monica of which he is co-founder, Hideaway is now ready for its official close up. Ampolsky tapped Anthony W. Design to dream up a multi-million dollar decor scheme custom built by Barrett Building Co., jettisoning the uninspiring airport lounge aesthetics of live entertainment venue private boxes. Instead, ticket holders who register for the wait list via Granted watch the game or concert from the luxury of what had been two suites that have been combined into a 660-square-foot immersive environment.

“From the beginning, our designer Tony Williams and I wanted to create an unmatched suite experience,” Ampolsky says. “We want guests and patrons to feel completely transported. From the ‘fireplace’ to the private DJ booth, we are redefining what it means to enter a luxury suite and taking that concept to the next level.” Bespoke paneling details, Gucci wallpaper, chesterfield-style sofas, a vintage Zoltar fortune telling machine, the aforementioned steam-powered fireplace and custom DJ booth adjacent to the nero marquina-clad bar make for a private club-like vibe that’s still close to the action on the court or stage. The Granted and Hideaway team seeks to “inject something new” into arenas of a certain age, notes Granted CEO and co-founder Shayma Hesari, also noting this type of transformation at Crypo.com Arena can serve as a model and catalyst for other venues.

Where to Stay:

Situated in a 1915 historical building that was once home to legends like Charlie Chaplin and Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, the Venice V Hotel features one-of-a-kind guest rooms and suites outfitted with custom design details, hardwood floors and modern amenities. Proper Hospitality’s interior design partner Relativity Architects curated the rooms with three themes in mind: bohemian beach culture, an artist’s studio and skate and surf culture. The seven private rooftop bungalows are ideal for short or long-term stays and feature ocean or city views, private entrances, kitchens and original art. With art as a focal point of the property, guests are welcomed into the hotel by a massive lobby mural depicting Venice visionary Abbot Kinney constructed of over 4,000 skateboard wheels that was created by Venice artist Tima Bell. From the carefully restored elevator to the dramatic central grand staircase, the hotel embraces the building’s storied past while offering guests the luxurious comforts they crave.

The new boite was inspired by the idea of reconnecting people with the best-tasting beef and celebrating the overall dining experience. The word matū comes from the Māori people of New Zealand and means essence. The streamlined menu fittingly represents the spirit of Wagyu’s Japanese lineage through exceptional cuisine and preparation. Guests can enjoy an omakase-style steak menu showcasing various cuts of beef prepared in different ways. If the five-course Wagyu Dinner of 100 percent grass-fed Wagyu produced by First Light Farms of New Zealand isn’t your speed, Matū also offers an a la carte menu to choose from.

Wolfgang Puck has been known to embrace innovation in his kitchens and dining rooms. With restaurants across the globe, Puck has always called Los Angeles home; over the past year, he has worked to transform his Beverly Hills mainstay, Spago, into a pandemic-proof eatery. “This past year has been difficult on the restaurant industry and also on the guests that enjoy gathering with family and friends,” says Puck. So, Puck decided to give his flagship restaurant an update. Spago L’extérieur embraces outdoor dining and features modular slotted walls, vented semi-private areas, a lounge and lobby all enclosed by a massive tent. The outdoor dining experience features a colorful Tomokazu Matsuyama art wall as a backdrop and will offer the restaurant’s complete mouthwatering menu (with fan favorites like smoked salmon pizza and spicy tuna tartare cones).

Gold particles add instant radiance while replenishing actives nourish and revitalize the skin’s surface. “Gold is like no other metal because its atomic structure and the way its electrons are arranged are very special,” says Dr. Jacqueline Hill, the brand’s global director of strategic innovation. “Gold provides immediate radiance when applied to the skin.”

The three hero products, Radiance Concentrate, Radiance Cream and Radiance Eye Cream, are richly textured and potent. “The collection is a blend of four active ingredients: gold particles of an average size of 60 microns, spherical submicron particles of pure gold with a replenishing peptide and a polyphenol attached to the gold particles’ surface, as well as the peptide and the polyphenol each in free form. The Pure Gold products act both in the short and long term to provide immediate radiance and revitalize the skin over time to bring back lost resplendence.”

Los Angeles native Emily Faith Goldstein founded jewelry brand EF Collection seeing a void in the market for 14-karat gold and diamond jewelry at an approachable price. “I wanted to change the way women approach fine jewelry,” says Goldstein of the first product she launched, Diamond Zig Zag Stack rings. “While it was typically something you saved for, I wanted to make it more fun and accessible. Women don’t need to wait for someone to buy them diamonds!” Out of her West Hollywood showroom, Goldstein crafts special, feminine pieces like pavé diamond and enamel heart pendants on chains, diamond bow earrings, signet rings and diamond rainbow charms. We talked to the designer, whose delicate designs are beloved by Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone and Angelina Jolie, about the brand a decade in.

Emily Faith Goldstein’s Reversible Diamond and Enamel Heart Necklace

What pieces are you loving?

Right now, it’s all about the ear game. I love mixing and matching different studs, huggies and ear cuffs to create a fun and unique look. Pre-COVID-19, we hosted many piercing parties and, more recently, private piercing sessions as a fun way to engage with our clients and help them style their EF earrings.

How have you found that customers are shopping for jewelry right now?

Our ecommerce business has grown significantly during the pandemic as, more and more, our clients are showing they like the convenience of jewelry delivered right to their door. Fine jewelry is a great, feel-good investment—especially for all those Zoom meetings!

What types of products can we expect next?

I am pregnant with my first (baby boy!) so there will be lots of personalization, another very popular category for us. Everyone wants something unique and special that represents their family and loved ones.

You’ve been very philanthropic during the past year. Please tell me about these initiatives.

With the onset of COVID-19, we launched the #EFfort where we partnered with friends of the brand to bring awareness to incredible charities helping our greater community. With a portion of every sale going directly to these organizations, we raised over $50,000 that went directly to Feeding America, No Kid Hungry, Meals on Wheels and Stand Up to Cancer.

Kitsch

Cassandra Thurswell, founder of Los Angeles-based hair accessory brand Kitsch, has introduced a slew of new must-haves for perfecting beauty and wellness routines at home. From cool-girl hair accessories such as eco-friendly towel scrunchies and patterned hair towels to luxurious sleep items like matching satin pillowcase and eye mask sets, Thurswell stylishly elevates daily self-care experiences. “Growing up in a small town in Wisconsin, I noticed an unaddressed white space in beauty accessories,” says Thurswell. “At a mass level, these products were bulk packed, weren’t exciting to buy and the quality was always compromised. I set out to make beauty accessories that performed like prestige and provided the boutique purchase feeling, while still maintaining a reasonable price point.”

Hermès Beaute’s Rouge Hermès lipstick collection has garnered a cult-like following since its launch last year. The tri-colored cases, designed by the creative director of Hermès jewelry and shoes, Pierre Hardy, boast three refillable shades (Corail Aqua, Rose Oasis and Beige Ébloui). Merit

Merit is a new clean makeup brand created by Katherine Power, the CEO of Versed skincare and Who What Wear and the co-founder of wine brand Avaline, who wanted to reimagine luxury beauty by making it clean, well-edited and accessible. When Power had her son, she wanted to start using products with cleaner formulas and, as the clean beauty landscape started to grow, she tried a lot of new great products, but always felt like they were being marketed toward a younger customer who was looking for newness (and excess) at every turn. These safe, high-performing makeup products can create a less-is-more polished look in minutes. Merit has eliminated more than 1,300 potentially harmful ingredients like artificial fragrances, parabens, sulfates and phthalates in its hero products like Shade Slick tinted lip oil, Flush Balm cheek color and Day Glow highlighter.

The only service of its kind, membership-based Sollis Health applies a concierge model to urgent and emergency care, offering its members 24/7 access to state-of-the-art medical treatment. These private facilities, one of which just debuted in Beverly Hills, are staffed by expert ER physicians and equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging such as MRI, CT, ultrasound and X-ray devices, as well as a comprehensive lab onsite, so there is no need to ever visit an ER. “My father and co-founder, Dr. Bernard Kruger, was one of the pioneers of concierge primary care medicine, but when his patients experienced acute, off-hour needs, the last place he wanted to send them was a chaotic ER,” explains Sollis co-founder Ben Kruger.

Whether it’s an emergency, a simple complaint, or anything in between, members know they’ll be treated in a private setting without an appointment or wait. “This means if you cut your hand cooking, you can come in for stitches immediately. Slip on the snow and twist your ankle? You can come in for an MRI,” says Kruger. Celebrities like Nick Kroll, Sienna Miller, Freida Pinto and Dianna Agron are members and love the privacy and attention they receive. We talked to Kruger about this new business model and how 2020 has changed his business.

Sollis Health’s new Beverly Hills medical center

Sollis Health’s new Beverly Hills medical center

How has COVID-19 impacted your business?

Sollis was one of the first services to provide in-home COVID-19 PCR testing with fast turnaround times and was a leader in developing in-home COVID-19 care, including imaging and oxygen therapy. We’ve been working closely with a number of companies to provide comprehensive testing and to develop back-to-work safety protocols allowing them to reopen safely and responsibly.

What if a member needs a service you don’t offer?

When you need a specialist, we have preferred relationships with the best specialists in New York, Los Angeles and across the globe, so we can facilitate immediate care from the absolute best doctors.

Do you ever send doctors to a patient’s home?

Yes! This kind of bespoke care isn’t limited to our facilities. We offer house calls for convenient COVID-19 testing and care, in-home evaluations, infusions and more.

How are you growing your membership right now?

We’ve developed partnerships with luxury real estate and hotels that are looking to provide residents with concierge medicine as part of their suite of amenities. For example, real estate developer JD Carlisle will be offering a complimentary Sollis Health membership to every resident of their new premium luxury building Madison House in NoMad, New York City.

As female founders and designers based in downtown LA, Kelly Urban of AMO and Alyssa Wasko of DONNI pride themselves on giving back to their communities and prioritizing local and ethical production practices. So, they decided to collaborate on a capsule collection of sweet denim pieces: a jean jacket, rugby shirt, cardigan, bucket bag and headband. “Alyssa and I share many of the same beliefs, such as local, ethical and sustainable production practices,” says AMO co-founder Urban. “Our shared values continued to prove this was the right fit, and we both sought to design a quality collection for women to feel comfortable in wearable everyday pieces.”

Meet Anne-Lise Cremona, The Force Behind Parfums Henry Jacques https://dujour.com/cities/anne-lise-cremona-parfums-henry-jacques/ Wed, 20 Jan 2021 14:55:41 +0000 Editors of DuJour https://dujour.com/?p=118230 With Anne-Lise Cremona at the helm, French parfumerie Henry Jacques continues its storied tradition of fragrance making

Fragrance connoisseur Henry Cremona wandered the globe nearly half a century ago in pursuit of natural ingredients for what would become Parfums Henry Jacques. For decades, his haute French parfumerie crafted bespoke fragrances upon request for clientele with a discerning nose. Now, following its recent expansion into retail under the direction of Henry’s daughter, global CEO Anne-Lise Cremona, the independent brand is introducing Americans to the parfumerie with a new boutique in Beverly Hills. Nestled on the cobblestone courtyard of Two Rodeo, the Henry Jacques jewel box offers traditionally handmade unisex perfumes derived from the brand’s library of almost 3,000 in-house creations.

From 1975 to 2010, the brand focused on creating perfumes for private clients. “When I joined the brand in 2010, the challenge was to translate this bespoke experience into an exclusive retail experience,” says Anne-Lise Cremona. “The exercise was extremely delicate and took several years, as we wanted to write a unique story in the perfume industry.” She is eager to attract a younger clientele as well, one that understands the value and uniqueness of what they offer. “Like an experienced couturier who masters its craft, we have this rare gift of being able to materialize perfumes that have a strong identity that aren’t trendy,” says Cremona.

Designed by French interior designer Christophe Tollemer to resemble a classic 19th-century French apartment, the interior’s old oak walls, chevron flooring and matte gold ceiling with a Porta Romana Bianca chandelier lead to an illuminated Corian perfume womb housing hand-blown crystal flacons of the brand’s 50 Les Classiques fragrances. “Our ingredients come from every corner of the earth,” explains Cremona. “The variety of plants and climates offer us an infinite amount of choices—we work with 1,200 ingredients in the lab. The South of France and the Mediterranean region offer a wonderful playground for perfumers with a wide variety of scents that we, of course, use in our creations.” So, does Cremona have a favorite fragrance? “I like to compose my perfume collection as a wardrobe that I wear depending on my moods, the season or the occasion,” she explains. “I travel with six perfumes, including Mrs. Y, Rose Supreme, Temporaline and my bespoke perfume, of course.” But, she cautions, the fragrances aren’t meant to be mixed. “All of our perfumes are complete as they are. They hold a delicate and perfect balance.”

The modern jewelry company Gemist has always put its customer and their designs first. The brand values the power of a distinct design that reflects a person’s style, energy, and point of view. With Gemist’s interactive online design experience, customers can easily bring their visionary jewelry designs to life with a few clicks. With all jewelry (rings, earrings, necklaces) made in downtown Los Angeles with sustainable materials and using ethical practices, it makes sense that the brand would team up with another Los Angeles-based brand for their latest pop-up shop. “Fred Segal has always embraced brands for their unique sense of self. They love ideas that think outside of the box and push boundaries. Gemist is no ordinary jewelry company and we knew we wanted a partner that really understood that. They welcome the Gemist experience as one-of-a-kind and we believe the Fred Segal consumer will also fall in love,” Gemist founder and CEO Madeline Fraser says of the Gemist pop-up shop at the flagship Fred Segal boutique on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.

The experiential pop-up shop will feature interactive moments for customers like a modular design product that you can use to attach a universal setting to earrings, rings, and necklaces for a fully customized piece of jewelry. Fraser emphasizes how much customization is available at the pop-up shop and how customers can truly unleash their creativity into their jewelry however they’d like.

Ahead of the opening, Gemist designed an exclusive collection of jewelry available at the Gemist x Fred Segal pop-up shop and on fredsegal.com. Gemist is celebrated for its colorful gemstones, stackable rings, and mix-and-match earrings. This new collection draws inspiration from all of those aesthetics. The core gemstones in the collection are morganite, aquamarine, amethyst and white topaz and everything is available in three types of metal: white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold. “The designs are meant to be worn every day and to withstand time. They are classic and delicate silhouettes that you will love and wear forever. They are also interchangeable and customizable. For example, our huggies and necklaces can be paired with charms that can be mixed and matched or layered to make a unique design statement,” Fraser says of the exclusive collection.

Fraser’s favorite pieces from the new collection for Fred Segal are the stacking rings. “They come in round, oval, and emerald stone cuts and can be layered together to make a very unique and beautiful stack.”

The Gemist x Fred Segal pop-up shop will be open from November 17 until December 15 at the Fred Segal boutique on Sunset Boulevard.

Silver Lake Pool & Inn is a new 54-room boutique hotel in Silver Lake from the Palisociety team. The property was designed in partnership with Venice Beach–based design firm Electric Bowery. The contemporary aesthetic of the hotel has Mexico City vibes and an earthy color palette. “The hotel also has a disproportionate amount of outdoor space for a hotel of this size, so that’s really special,” says Avi Brosh, Palisociety’s founder. “This allows us to be a unique amenity and hub for the neighborhood.” Marco Polo, its all-day, alfresco Italian restaurant, has become a big draw for its poolside setting. “It’s fun and comfortable and breezy and open morning, noon and night,” says Brosh. “We encourage taking a dip in between courses.”

The Westside has a new must-visit property from Proper Hospitality co-founders Brian De Lowe and Brad Korzen. The first location for their new hospitality brand Hotel June is a 12-story white tower near Playa Del Rey, and its 250 rooms showcase a mid-century modern, beachy decor with light natural woods, native fabrics, handmade tiles and organic textures. “We like to say it’s the younger sibling of Proper, with the same attention to detail, passion and love for hospitality and experiences as Proper, just stripped down a bit,” says De Lowe. Those non-negotiable amenities include Italian Fili D’oro linens, Aesop bath products and first-rate food and beverage establishments. Hotel June’s dining and drinking destinations are created in partnership with hospitality impresario Steve Livigni of Happy to Serve You Hospitality Group (of Scopa Italian Roots, Dama and Old Lightning). Caravan Swim Club, a two-level, outdoor restaurant and bar located poolside, serves seafood and tropical cocktails, while Scenic Route is the indoor restaurant that will open when the local mandates allow. For now, its founders are thinking about future outposts and other cities that would benefit from a Hotel June. “We envision opening Hotel Junes in other culturally rich, creative places, both big and small, including Nashville, Chicago and Miami,” explains De Lowe.

With rolling hills and stunning beaches, Cambria is an idyllic seaside village on the Central Coast in San Luis Obispo County. For Los Angeles-based interior designer and author Nina Freudenberger, it was also the ideal location for her first hospitality project. “It really feels like the perfect culmination of everything that California has to offer,” says Freudenberger. “It’s the perfect getaway from Los Angeles.” With year-round warm weather, California is naturally appealing, but this beachfront town didn’t have any design-forward hotels until White Water came along. The new property on Moonstone Beach, run by the owners of SoCal boutique hotels Holiday House, Casa Laguna, Cambria Beach Lodge and Sparrows Lodge, involved remodeling and merging two different pre-existing inns into one. “We worked hard to make sure that it felt unified, since we didn’t have the ability to change the architecture,” says the designer. “Since there was no changing the layout, we had to focus on wall and lighting treatments and all of the textures we were adding to the space to make it feel luxurious in its simplicity.” Freudenberger sourced custom pieces from as many local artisans as she could for the 1970s Scandinavian coastal aesthetic she was trying to achieve.

The wife and mother of two boys loved the experience of a hotel project after years of working on residential homes. “I am a big traveler and have always been interested in the hospitality experience,” she says. “Small things make a big difference, and it takes a tremendous amount of extra thought to get it just right.” Plus, choosing materials and furnishings that are practical and can take a beating (think using high-performance outdoor tent material for the headboards) was a new challenge. “Nothing would be more disappointing if it only looked good on Day 1!”

Nola Singer Makes Sustainable Sips in Los Angeles https://dujour.com/cities/rescue-rose-los-angeles-nola-singer/ Fri, 23 Oct 2020 14:15:39 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=116570 Rescue Rosé from fashion stylist Nola Singer is tasty and helps find homes for dogs in need

The post Nola Singer Makes Sustainable Sips in Los Angeles appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Los Angeles-based stylist Nola Singer loves rosé—who doesn’t? But in an effort to marry her love of rosé and her dedication to finding homes for rescue animals, she launched Rescue Rosé—a light and crisp Sonoma Valley wine. With more than a decade of experience rescuing animals (she has personally adopted five dogs), Singer knew she wanted to partner with her longtime friend Sasha Abelson’s organization Love Leo Rescue. The Los Angeles–based nonprofit takes in rescue dogs, provides medical care and shelter and, most importantly, helps find them forever homes. A portion of proceeds from every bottle of Rescue Rosé sold is donated to Love Leo Rescue. “I wanted to help animals in a bigger way,” says Singer. “Eventually, the dream would be to have a sanctuary where you can drink wine, see the dogs and adopt them. Older dogs that don’t get homes could also live there.”

With a responsible mission behind her brand and a bigger vision for the future, Singer found a vineyard in Santa Rosa, California, that was the perfect match to produce her wine. “It was challenging finding the right partner, but I found Gravity Wine House that is certified sustainable and they have a lot of organic practices—they’re even solar-powered,” she says. In-person events for Rescue Rosé may have been postponed due to COVID-19, but Singer has embraced the digital world with virtual happy hours and has her light-bodied, floral rosé available at several stores in Los Angeles, including Larchmont Village Wine, Spirits and Cheese. “I love rosé,” she exclaims. “I drink it all year round.” And now we all have a good excuse to.

“Deodorant is personal,” says Randi Christiansen, CEO of clean skincare brand Nécessaire. “There is simply not a ‘one product fits all’ approach. However, we feel we have a solution that will make a difference.” The brand, co-founded by Christiansen and fellow L.A.-based entrepreneur and former Into the Gloss editorial director Nick Axelrod, spent more than two years developing a new unisex product that’s simply known as The Deodorant.

The Deodorant

A multimineral formula of active ingredients including silica, zinc and kaolin clay keeps you dry while a gentle combination of lactic and mandelic acids neutralizes odor. The eucalyptus-scented deodorant also features a mild blend of essential oils.

The Power of a Mother’s Love https://dujour.com/cities/this-is-about-humanity-zoe-winkler-reinis-interview/ Thu, 09 Jul 2020 15:00:53 +0000 Andy Wang https://dujour.com/?p=114306 Zoe Winkler Reinis and This Is About Humanity fight for families who’ve been separated at the border

The post The Power of a Mother’s Love appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Before she co-founded This Is About Humanity, Zoe Winkler Reinis was a preschool teacher for a decade. She then worked as a therapeutic companion who helped children with social and emotional development.

“When I had my third son, I stopped working and was just going to be a stay-at-home mom,” says Winkler Reinis, whose boys are now 8, 4 and 2.

But when she started learning about families who had been separated at the U.S.-Mexico border, she knew she had to do something. “I couldn’t get it out of my mind,” she says. “I was just a mom looking at these moms. And in those mothers, I saw my own face. And in those children, I saw my children.”

In 2018, Winkler Reinis and two friends, sisters Elsa Marie Collins and Yolanda Selene Walther-Meade, started This Is About Humanity to raise awareness and provide support for separated and reunified families. Since then, they’ve taken 20 bus trips, primarily to Tijuana to bring supplies to shelters, build kitchens, bathrooms and roofs, replace tents and beds. They’ve raised more than $1 million. If that wasn’t enough, they’ve also joined forces with Yes We Can World Foundation to build a school in a retrofitted bus.

Winkler Reinis flanked by partners Elsa Marie Collins and Yolanda Selene Walther-Meade.

Winkler Reinis, whose father is actor Henry Winkler, has hosted charity dinners at her parents’ L.A. home to raise money for the Immigrant Defenders Law Center and other like-minded organizations. At these dinners, head chef Ruffo Ibarra has cooked alongside culinary luminaries including Tyler Florence, Ludo Lefebvre, Chris Bianco, Jessica Koslow, Ray Garcia, Bricia Lopez and Burt Bakman.

“It’s funny that I do this in my parents’ front yard, and I just take over their house,” Winkler Reinis says. “Sometimes, the
chefs will stay after dinner and do shots in the yard. My parents are asleep in their room and have no idea. It’s like high school.”

Winkler Reinis has long known that you can simultaneously have a good time and do good for the world. Her entire life,
she’s seen her parents fight for human rights and support many charities. Henry and Stacey Winkler’s activism includes co-founding the Children’s Action Network.

“I grew up watching my mom and dad fight for children who didn’t have a voice,” Winkler Reinis says.

Now she’s found her own cause and is getting other A-listers involved. Her friend Minka Kelly, who was part of the first bus trip to San Diego in July 2018, helped brainstorm a salon where speakers included immigration activists Mark Lane and Alida Garcia. Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent were so moved by a visit to Tijuana that they donated two years of rent for a LGBTQ shelter, and bedding for another shelter.

“There’s nothing like the raw power of a mother’s love,” says Sophia Bush, the actress and activist. “Zoe took the love she has for her own boys and turned it toward the most vulnerable children and families at the border. She’s brought together so many people, ideas and resources, and helped raise an unbelievable amount of awareness.”

Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who became familiar with This Is About Humanity through her friendship with its co-founders, echoes this sentiment.

“We all can see atrocities in the world and take a moment, donate, pray, etc.,” she says. “But to see these women take actual action and call upon their community and give us a chance to be hands-on and help, I’m forever grateful to them and to the change they are making in this world.”

Curtis Stone is Ready to Savor His Next Course https://dujour.com/cities/chef-curtis-stone-los-angeles-interview/ Tue, 28 Apr 2020 15:00:13 +0000 Jessica Estrada https://dujour.com/?p=112698 Chef Curtis Stone takes foodies on an adventure with his new show and upcoming restaurant

The post Curtis Stone is Ready to Savor His Next Course appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Curtis Stone loves to keep his plate full—and not just with food, the Australian chef has a dizzying number of different projects in the works at any given moment. Currently he’s working on a second season of his TV series Field Trip with Curtis Stone, on PBS, which follows him on culinary adventures around the world, specifically to find inspiration for his lauded Beverly Hills restaurant Maude, which recently received a Michelin star, Stone’s first.

Since it debuted in 2014, Maude has evolved from creating tasting menus centered around a single ingredient every month to crafting four menus a year inspired by different wine regions around the globe. Stone and some of his team members jet off to these different wine regions and immerse themselves in the culture, cook with local chefs, meet with sommeliers, and go on excursions. They then infuse what they learn into a 10-course menu.

For Maude’s spring menu, available through the end of March, Stone and his team traveled to the Barossa Valley wine region of Australia where he spent time learning about the aboriginal people who’ve occupied the area for the last 100,000 years. “It’s revolutionary,” he says of the experience. “You go out there and you see all of these ingredients that you never even knew existed. It’s life changing kind of stuff.” Following that menu will be another equally as impressive one inspired by Chile, the first South American region to be featured at the restaurant.

There’s also Stone’s new Dallas restaurant, Georgie, opened in collaboration with his brother Luke Stone. Georgie was modeled after Stone’s LA restaurant Gwen but has its own twist. “The heartbeat of the restaurant is the butcher shop,” Stone says. “There are a lot of meat-centric dishes. We also really pride ourselves on doing all of our vegetable dishes very well. There’s a big bar and a great bar program. It’s got a real vibe.”

Curtis Stone’s Restaurant Gwen

And last—but certainly not least—he’s working on opening yet another restaurant in LA, this time in Downtown’s 1928 Trust Building on Spring Street. As for the concept of the restaurant, we’ll have to wait and see. It’s still in its early design phase
and slated for an end-of-year opening. “With all my restaurants, I want them all to have a distinct personality,” Stone says. “I certainly don’t want chains. I want everything to be individual and I think that way it keeps it exciting.” One thing is certain, though. It’s going to be hot, literally. “I’ve fallen in love with cooking over an open flame, so there will certainly be a lot of fire elements,” he adds. curtisstone.com

Compartes Opens Willy Wonka-Esque Chocolate Factory https://dujour.com/cities/compartes-ceo-jonathan-grahm-opens-chocolate-factory/ Mon, 10 Feb 2020 16:30:20 +0000 Jessica Estrada https://dujour.com/?p=109883 Visit the chocolatier on La Brea Boulevard to be as happy as a kid in a candy store

The post Compartes Opens Willy Wonka-Esque Chocolate Factory appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Iconic chocolate brand Compartes has been in business for 70 years and counts legends like Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and Winston Churchill as customers. Owner and creative director Johnathan Grahm took the reigns in his early 20s and the Los Angeles native put his stamp on the brand by transforming chocolate bars into veritable pieces of art with inventive flavors and beautiful packaging inspired by fashion, design, and pop culture. Most recently, he’s taken the company to another level with a newly opened 6,000-square-foot chocolate factory on La Brea Boulevard in LA.

“It is like a modern day Willy Wonka world for 2020,” Grahm says. “It’s futuristic and traditional at the same time.” The factory, which is more than five times the size of its original Brentwood location, is a feast for both the eyes and taste buds. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls give visitors a peek at how the chocolate is made from scratch. On any given day, you might see chocolatiers drying fresh strawberries or preparing donuts to put in the chocolate bars. “It’s mesmerizing,” Grahm says.

The factory’s Parisian-inspired design is just as tantalizing as the chocolate. From the imported Italian marble and 14-foot brass door to the Venetian plaster walls and custom black cabinetry, every inch is luxe yet playful. Grahm, who considers himself an aficionado of all things beautiful, designed every element of the space himself. “I love interior design so much,” he says. “It’s my second favorite passion besides chocolate.”

As if undertaking the chocolate factory wasn’t enough, Grahm also spent the last two years dreaming up Compartes’s new line of vegan organic chocolate bars made with superfoods. “The vegan line is some of our best work ever,” he says. “The flavor profiles are incredible.”

His all-time favorite flavors include the best-selling California Love made with dark chocolate and crunchy, salted pretzels as well as the Campfire S’mores bar which features photos from his most treasured camping trips on the packaging.

So, what’s next for Compartes? Grahm is taking a deep breath and savoring all of his tasty successes for now. He’s been making chocolate since he was 15. “Compartes is really a reflection of me. The company has grown as I’ve grown as a person,” he says. The chocolate factory was his way of bringing the Compartes world to life in a way that people could not only taste, but truly experience the brand. It’s safe to say his mission is accomplished.

The cafe’s tableside “flower service” features a cannabis expert who guides guests through the different strains while rolling smokes. Spearheaded by chef Andrea Drummer, the food menu stars seasonal California-inspired dishes designed to complement the effects of THC (think grilled peaches and burrata, fried chicken sandwiches, and crispy brussel sprouts). Meet The Queen Of Cuisine in Los Angeles https://dujour.com/cities/smithsonian-honored-los-angeles-chef-helene-an-vietnamese-tasting-menu/ Fri, 18 Oct 2019 15:00:01 +0000 Jessica Estrada https://dujour.com/?p=105813 Smithsonian-honored chef Helene An unveils the first Vietnamese tasting-menu restaurant

The post Meet The Queen Of Cuisine in Los Angeles appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Only a handful of chefs in Los Angeles achieve the elusive status of celebrity. Chef Helene An is one of them, and with good reason. She’s built the House of AN, an incredible gastronomic empire centered around her Vietnamese fusion cuisine that now boasts multiple restaurants in Northern and Southern California, including the star-frequented Crustacean Beverly Hills, as well as a catering company and a cookbook.

It all started as a labor of love for her children. An and her family fled Vietnam during the war in 1975 and settled in San Francisco, where she helped her mother-in-law run an Italian diner. It was there that she began introducing Asian fusion dishes, including her now-famous garlic noodles.

This year, nearly 45 years later, the Smithsonian honored her with the well-deserved Pioneer Award in Culinary Arts for introducing Vietnamese food to America.

“It represents the culture and Asian-American immigrants in this country,” An says of the award. “It shows how far we have come. It’s something I will treasure forever.”

Accolades aside, it’s her family that she’s most proud of. Her five daughters and granddaughter all play key roles in running the family business, and it’s one of her greatest joys to see them all work together.

“Our differences help us push one another,” says Catherine An, one of Helene’s daughters and the founder of Tiato and An Catering. “In many ways, it’s helped us build the unique brand we have today, which appeals to a very broad audience.”

After almost five decades of wowing patrons with her inventive recipes, Helene An is ready to retire. “I want to have some time for myself, my husband, and my grandchildren,” she says. But she’s not hanging up her chef’s hat without one last hurrah.

This October, she debuts Da Lat Rose, the first Vietnamese tasting-menu restaurant in the country, located right above Crustacean Beverly Hills. Named after her beloved hometown in Vietnam, the concept feels like a full-circle moment and a fitting choice for her final project. “It will be rooted in more traditional, ethnic Vietnamese flavors, yet reinterpreted in a modern way,” An says.

Although the master chef will no longer be at the helm, the An empire isn’t going anywhere. Her daughters and granddaughter will continue to take it to new heights. “We want to continue celebrating what my mother has started,” Catherine An says.

Move over, Soho House. There’s a new social club in town. H Club, which opened in Hollywood earlier this year, is a high-end hub where creatives from different industries can come together and “connect, collaborate, and create.” Originally established in London by musician Dave Stewart and the late Paul G. Allen, philanthropist and cofounder of Microsoft, the five-story space has it all, including a swimming pool, a game room, a salon, workspaces, guest bedrooms, a recording studio, a screening room, and various dining spaces helmed by chef Kris Morningstar. However, the star of the show—er, club—is the rooftop lounge, where members can dine, drink, watch movies, and take in the views.

Bespoke and Sustainable Designs https://dujour.com/cities/los-angeles/inghua-ting-interview-sustainable-product-design-ting-london/ Mon, 15 Jul 2019 18:00:27 +0000 Jeremy Kinser http://dujour.com/?p=103996 Inghua Ting has turned vintage leather belts into her line’s signature design statement

The post Bespoke and Sustainable Designs appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
If you think recycling doesn’t lend itself easily to high-end design, prepare to change your mind when you see the exquisite design products of Inghua Ting. The innovative British-born designer, who oversees studios in both Los Angeles and London from her Hollywood Hills home, has always maintained a design ethos centered around the reuse and repurposing of old and existing materials.

Ting’s stunning bespoke tiles, made from the finest vintage leather belts, are perhaps the most sterling examples of this ethos. These glossy, hard-wearing modular surfaces grace the floors, walls, and doors of hotels, restaurants, and yachts. “Our clients say the leather floors age gracefully, and as time passes and foot traffic works the leather, it develops its own patina and story, which we feel adds to the character of our product and the ownership experience,” Ting says. “We source and recycle worn belts and create a product that celebrates their history and the patina that comes with being worn for decades.”

It was right after her 2000 graduation from the Royal College of Art with a degree in textile design that she recalls being filled with a sense that it was possible to shape her own career path and incorporate her passion for recycled leather.

One of her favorite and most popular products is among her earliest creations: the Ting Sling, a thoroughly modernized version of a hammock. Hers will allow you to spend the summer months relaxing in a body-conforming yet comfortable patio accessory. The clean aesthetic of polished stainless-steel hardware combined with the sleek appearance of a woven automotive seat belt seems to resonate in a wide variety of environments. “We have been making the Ting Sling for over 15 years and have seen them installed in homes of all styles, as well as hotels and ocean liners,” she says.

“We understand that our clients are often looking for something unique,” Ting says. “The combination of a sustainable surface that is handmade and bespoke has a strong appeal. We work closely with clients to understand their project and environment and develop designs specifically tailored and complementary.”

While Ting’s clientele consists predominantly of architects and interior designers who specify a product for a project, there are also private individuals who reach out when they have a space they’re renovating and want something as simple as an area rug or leather tiles. Items from her collection have been included in exhibitions at such esteemed venues as Selfridges in London, Colette in Paris, Bergdorf Goodman in New York, and Adrian Grenier’s SHFT in L.A.

With her solid-gold feel for textures that resonate, you could say Ting has the Midas touch.

Shop Around at The Beverly Center https://dujour.com/cities/shop-los-angeles-beverly-center-renovation/ Mon, 22 Apr 2019 15:00:09 +0000 Jeremy Kinser http://dujour.com/?p=102337 After a multi-million dollar renovation, this shopping destination is a must-see

The post Shop Around at The Beverly Center appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
The Beverly Center was once described by the Los Angeles Times as a “big” “brown” “blob,” and there’s a generation of shoppers who won’t argue. However, following a $500 million (you read that correctly) renovation courtesy of Italian design firm Studio Fuksas, that description is now obsolete by any standard, because every aspect of the multi-floor plaza has been transformed. Adding to the new aesthetic, there’s a magnificent 25,000-square-foot ribbon of glass that triples the amount of skylight in the center, flooding the building with natural light. The center’s new exterior lighting program will show its colors to acknowledge awards season, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pride, and other noteworthy events, anniversaries, and milestones. But, of course, most patrons come here to shop, and they won’t be disappointed. The newly installed concierge service directs shoppers to an endless array of luxe establishments prepared to satisfy every need or whim. Having added shops ranging from couture (Balenciaga) to classic (Brooks Brothers) to trendy (Hayden Girls), the center has something for every fashionista. Need a quick, delicious breakfast-lunch? You can do much worse than Eggslut, a fast-casual eatery that’ll make you rethink your breakfast choices. If traditional sit-down dining is what you desire, check out Cal Mare, the latest masterpiece from lauded chef Michael Mina. In fact, everything is state of the art in the new Bev Center, even the parking.

If you misplace your car, don’t give it a second thought. Merely scan your ticket at the payment station, and you’ll be instantly informed of the exact location of your car via the digital display screen. What more can you possibly ask of a shopping center?

Honoring a Family Tradition in Los Angeles https://dujour.com/cities/earthecho-environmental-foundation-philippe-cousteau/ Mon, 08 Apr 2019 15:00:44 +0000 Jeremy Kinser http://dujour.com/?p=102139 See how the Cousteau mission lives on through EarthEcho

The post Honoring a Family Tradition in Los Angeles appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Few, if any, successful social movements have launched without the engagement of awakened young people. This fact wasn’t lost on Philippe Cousteau 19 years ago, when he and his sister began EarthEcho, their environmental foundation, which encourages young people to act now to achieve a sustainable future. The company’s resources are designed to equip new generations of leaders to identify and tackle environmental challenges in their own communities and beyond. If the surname sounds familiar, it should. Philippe is the grandson of legendary underwater explorer Jacques and the son of second-generation diver Philippe-Pierre, so the company is merely carrying on the family tradition. That family now includes Philippe’s wife, Ashlan, who works as an adviser with EarthEcho on its outreach and education efforts.

“I realized that one of the failings of the environmental movement was a lack of a robust youth strategy,” reveals Philippe, who has delivered keynote addresses at Harvard and the UN. “When we wanted to start an organization in honor of my father, Philippe Cousteau Sr., we looked around and saw that not a lot of groups were focused on youth empowerment in the environmental sector.” Rectifying this, Cousteau’s company has become one of the leading environmental education organizations in the world.

Fortunately for Cousteau, who was nominated for an Emmy for his popular Hulu series Xploration Awesome Planet, young people were already fired up about making a positive difference for the environment. “Our goal at EarthEcho is to provide them with tools and support to recognize their power to change the world,” he says.

The Cousteau work with EarthEcho kids

Since millennials are overwhelmingly concerned about these issues, they just need a little help to recognize how to take action and be effective change agents in their community, which is where EarthEcho comes in. “We provide tools and resources in classrooms and community groups around the world,” Cousteau says. “Our Water Challenge is one of the largest citizen-science water quality–monitoring programs in the world; our StemExplore program examines how young people can get engaged in science and sustainability as a career; our Expeditions program explores critical environmental issues and then provides content to schools around the world to educate young people about these issues and provide them tools to take action; and, finally, our Youth Leadership Council works with established youth community leaders in countries around the world to amplify their voices and allow them to reach a global audience.”

Although its global presence is significant, the foundation also connects locally, having worked with the Los Angeles Unified School District to train teachers and provide content. “Our last global education EarthEcho Expedition program, Water by Design, brought over a dozen teachers from the L.A. area on an expedition exploring water scarcity in the region,” Philippe shares. “We featured L.A. as our case study about how to develop solutions to the water crisis that plagues communities around the world.”

As for the legacy of his famed grandfather and father, it’s something of which he’s proud and works to honor. “I was raised to believe everyone has a responsibility to take action to make this world a better place,” he states. “We are all in this together, and it will take all of us to build the healthy, vibrant planet we need to survive and thrive. This is a legacy we share with the whole world and will be excited to share with our own baby.”

Frieze Art Fair Debuts in Los Angeles https://dujour.com/cities/frieze-art-fair-debuts-in-los-angeles-california-art-culture/ Wed, 13 Feb 2019 19:30:35 +0000 Liddy Berman http://dujour.com/?p=100774 See what makes the City of Angels the perfect destination for the next Frieze Art Fair

The post Frieze Art Fair Debuts in Los Angeles appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
“In Los Angeles, you can have it all – sunshine, space, and art too,” says rising LA gallerist Anat Ebgi, one of the few exhibitors chosen to participate in the inaugural edition of Frieze Los Angeles art fair. Open to invited guests only on February 14, and to the public from February 15 to 17, Frieze Los Angeles promises art lovers much to celebrate this Valentine’s Day.

Los Angeles, which has long been viewed as an incredible center for art production, has been steadily raising its profile as a cultural capital since the 1950’s. Influential private museums and foundations have opened across the city in the past decade, and both midrange and upper echelon international galleries have invested significant resources in building new LA spaces to meet this influx of interested new collectors, established patrons, and art lovers. Existing institutions are getting in on the action too, with major expansions planned at LACMA, the Orange County Museum of Art, and UCLA’s Hammer Museum. The arrival of Frieze in the City of Angels feels like a coronation for the city – an acknowledgement of its contributions to the arts, and an affirmation of its status as a significant destination for the international art world.

“Frieze Los Angeles is poised to be an annual moment for Los Angeles that not only draws an influx of visitors to the city but also provides an opportunity for the city itself to engage with the incredible array of artists, educators, galleries, museums, and institutions that define our cultural landscape. Los Angeles is already on the contemporary art map. It is long overdue to have a spot on the international art world calendar,” Frieze LA director Bettina Korek said in a recent press conference. The fair’s launch in LA, following so closely on the heels of failed attempts to launch FIAC Los Angeles and Paris Photo Los Angeles, has generated much excitement. The influence of Endeavor, which purchased a majority stake in Frieze in 2016, has heightened expectations, and both local and international audiences are eagerly awaiting this debut joint venture of the entertainment industry and the art world.

Frieze Art Fair Los Angeles

The fair has been carefully curated to highlight the value and history of the arts in Los Angeles. One third of the participating galleries are based in LA or have a local space, and the fair’s curators, in addition to a multitude of its exhibitors, have chosen to highlight LA artists and their contributions to contemporary art history in their presentations. Anat Ebgi unpacks some of that local history for us: “I believe that Frieze coming to Los Angeles speaks to a broader phenomenon happening right now – everyone wants to be in LA. It may have taken a few decades to catch on, but the contemporary art scene in this city is now legendary. Collectors have begun to get serious about buying locally rather than looking to New York or abroad. We’ve seen the rise of several new and important institutions – The Marciano Art Foundation, ICA LA, and the expansion at LACMA, to name a few – as well as smaller spaces cropping up in unsuspecting neighborhoods that are doing very important work for marginalized communities. This sort of interest and development really speaks to the culture that we have been developing here.”

This focus on LA’s bright past illuminates the city’s even brighter future. Innovative smaller art fairs have already popped up around Frieze to offer visitors a wide array of opportunities to engage in the commercial art scene, and local museums and foundations have stacked their schedules with blockbuster exhibitions and events to celebrate the influx of viewers and attention that they have worked so hard to cultivate. The High Renaissance has dawned in California’s art world with the arrival of Frieze, and the horizon gleams brightly with new projects and expansions that promise to burnish the city’s artistic luster.

Meet a TV Superhero Turned Vintner https://dujour.com/cities/stephen-amell-andrew-harding-nocking-point-wines-interview/ Wed, 16 Jan 2019 16:00:20 +0000 Jeremy Kinser http://dujour.com/?p=99836 The founders of Nocking Point Wines want you to remember their brand for both their story and quality vino

“I like how wine can be an experience in and of itself, or elevates a meal, or simply brings people together,” states actor Stephen Amell. He knows what he’s talking about. As you undoubtedly recognize the actor from his straight-shooting starring role in TV’s Arrow, you’re probably unaware he’s also a celebrated vintner. But that’s about to change. Last year, Amell partnered with his pal Andrew Harding to form Nocking Point Wines. Once a passion project, it has grown into a legitimate business: a tantalizing wine club that currently features 6,000 members, with nearly that same amount on the wait list.

Amell teamed up with actress-comedian Aisha Tyler for the line’s appropriately named Night Ender, a distinguished bold blend of Cabernet and Malbec that’s the ideal bottle of wine to conclude a beautiful evening. “The original name we had was Boss Bitch,” Amell reveals with a chuckle. “It didn’t quite send the same message, but we’re going to hang onto that one for later!” The actor states that his love of storytelling imbues each bottle. “We hope everyone remembers Nocking Point not just for the wine’s quality, but for the story behind it and the experience they were having when they took it down,” he says. “We’re 100 percent direct-to-consumer, so we get to control the customer’s entire experience from end to end. That’s very uncommon and incredibly important to us.”

Despite his wild success on television, Amell insists there’s nothing more satisfying than taking a passion project with a good buddy and turning it into a real, viable, thriving business that connects with millions of people. “We didn’t buy this winery; it wasn’t handed down to us,” he shares. “We quite literally got our hands dirty in the first few years bottling, labeling, and boxing up our wines so that we could eventually scale and get to where we are today. We have a long road growing Nocking Point’s business, but I’m super proud of what we’ve created so far.”

Building on the incredible success of Santa Monica’s revered JiRaffe, Chef Raphael Lunetta continues to cast a spell over the Los Angeles culinary scene by elevating New California cuisine to new heights with Lunetta Dining & The Moon Bar. You’ll enjoy a singular dining experience within a wall-to-wall ceiling treatment of ornate foliage, while a skylight centers the room and the night sky is revealed in the constellation-inspired tiling. Begin your meal with a tossed-to-order rock shrimp & baja scallop ceviche, served with fresh homemade guacamole and lime chips, matched with a signature handcrafted cocktail. If you prefer wine, indulge in eclectic varietals offered by the glass and by the bottle. For date night, you can’t go wrong with the mouth-watering 22 oz. dry aged New York strip, which is meaty enough for two, and features potato banana gratin, Castelfranco, and confit tomato. Top off your evening with desserts both edible (try the strawberry pistachio bombe or the divinely decadent Manjari chocolate crème brulée) or drinkable (perhaps an Italian classic such as an Sambuca Romana or an Amaro Montenegro). You won’t forget your evening here.

Now let us tell you all about Eve American Bistro. Executive Chef Scott Commings, the champ of Hell’s Kitchen season 12, is at the helm of this fascinating new restaurant, described as a feminine take on the traditional European-style bistro, which takes its name from a character in a Raymond Chandler mystery. Located in the newly renovated Mayfair Hotel in downtown L.A., there’s nothing mysterious about the menu, which includes such perfectly prepared staples of Modern American cuisine as duck confit, braised octopus carpaccio and lobster truffle mac & cheese.

If animal-based cuisine isn’t part of your diet, stop by Yarrow Café. Chef Royce Burke, owner of Secret Lasagna, delivers once again with this essential vegan/vegetarian eatery with its inventive menu that opened in the Fairfax District in mid-summer. Also boasting a growing roster of amazing small roasters, Yarrow also pours the most exceptional cup of coffee in the neighborhood.

Totalee on the Alley Atelier has been the culmination of what I always thought a salon should be: creative, comfortable, luxurious, artistic and intimate,” says Lee Rittiner, the renowned global hair stylist of his just-opened jewel box boutique salon. Tucked into an exclusive nook in Beverly Hills complete with a hidden private entrance, Rittiner poured his blood, sweat and tears into the project, helping to design and even build the space.

“This was designed like a home where I can welcome clients,” he reveals about the salon, which is designed in neutral tones, inviting and luxurious. Rittiner explains that he created a place where he can be his most free and creative. “Without a sign, we incorporated black glass panels in our oversized iron door frame.”

With only four chairs in his shop, Rittiner enlists his color team and assistant stylists to provide the most undivided attention to clients, which include Khloe Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen. It’s his impressive product line, which includes cream elixir and shine mist, that keeps the who’s who returning for the attention their tresses require. His luxurious shampoos and conditioners are blended with a proprietary range of super nutrients and powerful essential oxygenated oil is formulated to manage care for the scalp and address and combat epigenetic factors, leaving clients’ manes looking shiny, healthy, luxurious and revitalized—from the first use and every use thereafter.

Maria Menounos is a Heavenly Host https://dujour.com/cities/maria-menounos-host-afterbuzztv-interview/ Thu, 05 Jul 2018 17:30:50 +0000 Andrew C. Stone http://dujour.com/?p=95849 This Emmy-winning actress is mentoring a new generation of correspondents with her online network AfterBuzzTV

The post Maria Menounos is a Heavenly Host appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
AfterBuzzTV cofounder Maria Menounos knew there was a hunger for TV series after-shows—just how big that appetite was, she never could have predicted. With billions of international eyes and ears devouring AfterBuzz’s 150-plus hours of weekly original content, Menounos and her producer husband, Keven Undergaro, have a hypercharged hit on their hands.

“We’ve got this great platform that allows young talent to flourish with a lot of supportive people involved… This was not necessarily the case when I was coming up,” says Menounos of AfterBuzz, which provides a post-show recap of some of primetime’s most popular series, like Billions and Dancing with the Stars. “It’s hard to get a break in this town. In this business, you can’t get a reel without a job… but how are you going to get a job without a reel? It’s exciting to give our young hosts this great opportunity.”

Menounos launched the digital broadcasting network in 2014 with Undergaro, who she married live on television during FOX’s New Year’s Eve 2018 broadcast. (Steve Harvey performed the ceremony.) On AfterBuzz, nearly 300 young hosts expertly dissect favorite shows and often interview cast members in the moments after an episode has aired. “We keep growing, and it’s such a community,” insists Menounos. “There are stars zooming in and out doing interviews and so much creativity in the air. It’s a safe haven for people with these dreams, right here in Hollywood.”

Launching the network and developing up-and-coming talent came on the heels of Menounos’ recovery from a brain tumor, an emotional ordeal she bravely shared with the world. Now, she insists upon taking life and career at a much more civilized pace than in her E! News heyday. That it’s also an opportunity to work side-by-side with her husband makes it all the sweeter. “It’s amazing, and Keven gets so much of the credit,” says Menounos. “So many people have great ideas but don’t know how to execute them, and he really does. Somehow, together, we manage to create 150 hours of programming every week, with retention rates of 67 percent. We are now on every red carpet, and we have all of these cool partnerships happening. The best part is, fans really get what they want.”

Paying homage to the region where Gaggenau was original founded in 1683, the pop-up will once again bring an authenticity and a warmth to the luxury brand, showing guests where Gaggenau came from in order to be where they are now. Though the debut pop-up experience was strictly invite-only, for the second installment, Gaggenau has integrated a public access component, granting limited “reservations” for auction winners. The winning bids went to benefit Operation Smile, a nonprofit medical service organization. Incorporating creative culinary courses and experiential design, the Restaurant 1683 pop-up event will take place from May 21 to 23 in Los Angeles.

Inside the Marciano Family’s Fashion and Arts Empire https://dujour.com/cities/maurice-paul-marciano-guess-designs-art/ Wed, 18 Apr 2018 16:00:03 +0000 Samuel Anderson http://dujour.com/?p=94110 After building a global fashion brand, the brothers Marciano are changing the face of L.A.'s art scene

Last November, 48-year-old Jennifer Lopez became the new face of Guess – setting a record as the oldest model to wear the Guess Girl crown. Looks aside, Lopez was the perfect fit; both she and the California denim brand represent wellsprings of youth and longevity – notions have animated Maurice and Paul Marciano’s company since they founded it after relocating from the South of France to California in 1977.

“When my brother and I came to Los Angeles, we thought it was going to be just a two-week vacation,” Paul says. “The beach, the palm trees and beautiful California girls seemed to all just be a dream but it actually was real life.”

From the outset, Guess designs reflected fun and femininity, emphasizing blinding acid-washes and skin-tight silhouettes. But, Paul continues, the clothes were in service of a larger philosophy. “Throughout my career, I’ve always focused more on what the image was,” he says. “The key to success for us has been remaining consistent with our brand messaging and never changing what we stand for.”

That said, the brand has adapted to the ever-changing retail market, embracing the trendy-again ’90s streetwear aesthetics it originally helped popularize. In 2016, it launched the Guess Originals collection with fashion icon A$AP Rocky, rolling out in premium boutiques like New York’s Opening Ceremony and RSVP in Chicago.

In the meantime, the Marciano family crest has established a legacy that transcends trend. In 2017, Maurice and Paul opened the Marciano Art Foundation, a sprawling contemporary art museum housed in a refurbished Masonic temple on Wilshire Boulevard. “The entire foundation really is Maurice’s work,” Paul says. “[He] has spent a tremendous amount of time and energy to make it what it is today.” After last year’s acclaimed inaugural exhibit, “Jim Shaw: The Wig Museum,” which drew on the history of the Freemasons, the Foundation’s forthcoming exhibit, “Olafur Eliasson: Reality projector,” will fill the 13,500 square-foot space with abstract, three-dimensional projections on March 1st.

Whether through flirtatious fashions or abstract art, the mission all along has been to promote artistry through image. “Our goal is to help new artists, the same way we helped new photographers and models become well known,” Paul says. “It’s important for [us] to be recognized for what we have and what we always will stand for. I’m going to keep dreaming big.”

Guests of the launch for Bulgari Parfum’s Omnia Pink Sapphire fragrance may have recognized the party’s famous venue, the iconic Sheats–Goldstein Residence in Los Angeles, from the movies (Charlie’s Angels, anyone?). But the legacy jewelers cast the retro home in a whole new light for the launch of their latest fragrance. Upon arriving, visitors were zipped to the home’s entrance in Bulgari-branded pink golf carts, where they were supplied with a pack of “#JustDareBulgari” cards meant to conjure the fragrance’s fun-loving spirit. The whimsical scent was created by Master Perfumer Alberto Morillas in an effort to target Generation Z, which also served as the party’s design inspiration. From balloon installations to a pink-lit pool, the party offered funhouse vibes and Instagrammable moments for guests, who sipped on (what else?) pink rosé champagne provided by Veuve Clicquot.

Attendees included the faces of the campaign Amanda Steele, Madison Beer and Margaret Zhang, along with influencers Amanda Cerny and Helena Bordon. With beats by DJ Hannah Bronfman, the soundtrack for the evening was elegant and playful, to match the sparkling scent.

The Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles has become a hotbed for provocative cultural events (recall their bloody Carrie-themed prom party?). Next up is Taylor Mac’s A 24-Decade History of Popular Music, coming to the hotel theater on March 15. As with the show’s wildly acclaimed first run at New York’s Public Theater, the subversive showman will chart the history of popular music and activism in America from 1776 to the present. The show, which earned Mac the 2017 Edward M. Kennedy Prize and a finalist spot for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, journeys from the Civil War to the 1963 March on Washington. You’ll exit feeling exalted.

Opening Up The Vault https://dujour.com/cities/kiss-gene-simmons-new-book-release/ Tue, 19 Dec 2017 16:00:25 +0000 Editors of DuJour http://dujour.com/?p=91084 KISS front man Gene Simmons gets personal with the release of a new book and his first box set

The post Opening Up The Vault appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Gene Simmons is a businessman—and being a front man for KISS is only one part of that business. Of course the makeup, the tongue and the voice made him recognizable–but his business ventures, both related and unrelated to the glam rock band that brought him notoriety in the ‘80s, are what’s bringing him the power.

Dey Street Books is set to release Simmons’ On Power: My Journey Through the Corridors of Power and How You Can Get More Power. “Power exists for Hitler and power exists for The Pope. It can be used for good or bad,” he says. “It’s strictly currency. What you do with it has to do with your moral and ethical bent.”

In the book Simmons shares stories from his own life and career but also talks about historical figures like Cleopatra and Napoleon Bonaparte, plus modern-day marvels like Elon Musk and Oprah Winfrey.

In addition to the book, Gene also releases his first box set this year, which includes a hand delivery to the buyer. The Vault is what Simmons calls a 50-year time capsule that serves as a soundtrack to his life, filled with songs he’s written, but has never released. The Vault also includes a new Gene action figure, an “In Gene We Trust” oversize commemorative coin, a deluxe book containing over 50,000 words and 160 pages of unseen photos from his personal collection.

As for the signature glasses, don’t expect him to take them off anytime soon. “The sun never sets on planet cool. Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing—find your suit of amount that fits you, that enables you to be less vulnerable.“

Michael S. Smith is one of the most decorated names in interior design, so it’s no surprise that when the Obamas were in the White House, they tapped him to redesign their private quarters. Now that the Obamas have transitioned to civilian life, we are sure the former first family will call on the Architectural Digest honored designer yet again when it’s time to revamp a new home. When he isn’t color swatching and choosing furniture with the former first lady, here is where you’ll find the Santa Monica-based designer.

Cup of Joe: Bouchon Bakery in Beverly Hills has the best coffee.

Field Trip: I love taking friends to the restaurant at The Getty Museum. There is such a beautiful sunset view.

Date Night: I go to The Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I love the McCarthy Salad and Tortilla Soup.

Power Lunch: Michael’s in Santa Monica.

Retail Therapy: JF Chen for unique accessories and antiques.

Cocktail Hour: Tower Bar at the Sunset Hotel. I love their Paloma cocktail.

An A-List Duo’s New Sunflower-Inspired Scent https://dujour.com/cities/eric-buterbaugh-nick-fouquet-collaboration/ Mon, 10 Jul 2017 16:00:48 +0000 Jeremy Kinser http://dujour.com/?p=86784 A sought-after florist and a high-end hat maker teamed up to create this unisex fragrance

The post An A-List Duo’s New Sunflower-Inspired Scent appeared first on DuJour.

It’s not every day that a florist and a milliner get together to create a perfume. But that’s exactly what happened when Eric Buterbaugh, designer of arrangements for A-listers like Gwyneth Paltrow and Gwen Stefani, and Nick Fouquet, creator of bespoke hats for the likes of Madonna and Beyoncé, collaborated on the scent Nick’s Sunflower. The unisex fragrance is the product of a challenge they set themselves: to determine how a flower with no scent—the sunflower—might smell. “It’s a fresh, floral, happy scent,” Buterbaugh reveals. Fouquet adds that it encapsulates their idea of summer—“it’s subtle yet adventurous,” he says. The fragrance’s name emerged from a private joke between the two: Fouquet passionately adores sunflowers, while Buterbaugh vehemently dislikes them. No matter each man’s opinion of the bud, it’s safe to say they agree on how it might smell—sublime.

The post See Inside the Marciano Art Foundation appeared first on DuJour.

On Saturday, L.A.’s just-completed Marciano Art Foundation had its first major unveiling with a party heralding the museum’s official opening on May 25th. Founded and entirely funded by Guess co-founders Paul and Maurice Marciano, the museum is housed in a Koreatown manor once occupied by the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple.

In the museum’s inaugural show, “Jim Shaw: The Wig Museum,” Shaw pays homage to the space’s former tenants through modified objects inspired by those the Freemasons left behind, including a display of multicolored wigs.

While the exhibition space may recall secret rituals of the past, the crowd on Saturday was decidedly in the moment. Guests on loan from Hollywood included Ryan Seacrest, Sharon Stone and Owen Wilson, while art world titans like Larry Gagosian and Takashi Murakami were there to commemorate the biggest thing to hit the L.A. art scene since the Broad.

Behind the Exhibit: Signs of Life https://dujour.com/culture/behind-the-exhibit-signs-of-life-john-van-hamersveld/ Thu, 23 Feb 2017 16:00:09 +0000 Kasey Caminiti http://dujour.com/?p=82886 A retro vinyl art installation in L.A. inspired by the culture of rock n’ roll and SoCal lifestyle

The post Behind the Exhibit: Signs of Life appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
The visual culture of rock and roll, the quintessential SoCal lifestyle and the iconic ’60s music scene was artistically cultivated by various influencers. One in particular is John Van Hamersveld, the influential artist who created the legendary concert poster of Jimi Hendrix at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium, the surf movie poster for Endless Summer as well as the 1984 Olympic mural at the L.A. Coliseum. Hamersveld’s career includes having created artwork for Capitol Records, Buzz Magazine, Fat Burger and Kate Mantilini.

Hamersveld’s newest exhibit is Signs of Life and will be on display and open to the public for six weeks from February 10 through March 31. The exhibit will span across two of Brookfield’s Downtown L.A. properties: FIGat7th and Bank of America Plaza on Bunker Hill, where the L.A. Chamber Orchestra will play music by the composers Van Hamersveld will portray on the Bank of America building alongside the Farmer’s Market on Fridays during the run of this show.

John Van Hamersveld

Hamersveld custom created four symbols to represent the Summer of ’69: a flower, symbolizing growth; a peace sign, instilling safety within; a heart, representing love; and a globe for balance. “I feel these emblems truly symbolize the greatest years of past and present and bring a fresh, modern approach to these events,” Hamersveld described his inspiration for selecting the four specific symbols used in Signs of Life. “The four symbols were conceived in 1997, at a time where I felt I wanted to create symbolic originals I could own as an eco-kind of idea. The application of those symbols came later when I developed the Viva Vision Light Show. That artful process of creating a moving digital collage of vernacular from my archive of icons and symbols was a fantastic experience and the precursor to this installation.”

The artist recalls the momentous era when the SoCal lifestyle was born saying, “Hollywood and Sunset Boulevard in the ’70s became a global phenomena of creative visual imagery. When vinyl went to CDs, my work changed. I realized my work was a part of the music culture – as an album cover or campaign. The portfolio of work became 300 album covers in different collaborations with eight different labels. Here I was in Hollywood on the Sunset Strip of popular culture.”

The exhibit will include several large-scale works, each one created with bold lines, striking colors and a unique relationship between negative and positive space. Hamersveld describes his favorite aspect of his exhibit saying, “The elevator banks at FIGat7th are like a monolith mural wrapped around the elevators. The design looks like a package that will contrast with the downtown skyline that is behind it.”

Elevator banks at FIGat7th

Karen Kitchen, Art Brookfield’s Senior Producing Director described her favorite aspect as well saying, “As presenters, we were drawn to Van Hamersveld’s signature use of bold colors, embellished design, and the visual energy of his aesthetic and subject matter, which is the perfect complement to Brookfield’s beautifully designed spaces in Downtown Los Angeles.”

Signs of Life will be open to the public until March 30, 2017.

Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi’s Guide to Los Angeles https://dujour.com/culture/erin-gibson-and-bryan-safis-guide-to-los-angeles/ Tue, 31 Jan 2017 18:00:02 +0000 Madison Ford http://dujour.com/?p=82507 The stars of TV Land’s new late-night news program, Throwing Shade, on political correctness and where to find them when they’re not cracking jokes

The post Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi’s Guide to Los Angeles appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
In an era where journalists are public enemy number one, audiences—at least the more intelligent ones—look to their newscasters to stand their ground. In fact, if the popularity of such late-night news programs such as The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee is any indication, it could be argued that simply standing ground is not enough. Now, more than ever, audiences look to their newscasters to fight back—with sharp wit and cutting humor—against accusations of being “fake” and “among the most dishonest people on earth.” This January, TV Land enters the late-night news game with Throwing Shade, which stars Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi, a comedic duo acclaimed for their frank and often ridiculous insights on current events.

While they may be new to television, Gibson and Safi are no strangers to cultural comedy: Their act began as a podcast that, in 2013, was picked up by Funny or Die. Their new series embraces its comedic roots with skits featuring celebrity guests like Will Ferrell and Casey Wilson that drive home its commentary. According to the hosts, the move to TV Land has brought welcome changes (like a live audience), but there have been some setbacks. “We can’t wear sweatpants anymore,” Gibson says. “So we’re really bummed out about that.”

On a serious note, Gibson and Safi say their program attempts to corner untapped elements of the late-night genre. “People talk a lot about women’s issues, and LGBT issues, and we’re two people that those issues effect,” says Safi. “We’re not really brilliant like Samantha Bee and John Oliver are, we are kind of weird and super silly. Most of our references are more pop culture than supreme court cases, so we are additional voices that add more dimension to a landscape.”

With a tagline that promises to treat pop culture and politics “with much less respect than they deserve,” the two hosts say they prefer a more uproarious approach to the realm of political discourse. “When you get into wonky land of talking about politics, it becomes very heavy and very depressing.” Gibson says. “So our goal has always been, ‘How can we talk about this stuff where it feels like we have control?’ Because we are making fun of the oppressors instead of feeling like we’re under them. So that is where the pop culture thing comes in. That’s the disrespectful part.”

The hosts admit that finding humor while remaining politically correct has never really been a challenge. “Political correctness is really just thinking before you speak,” Safi says, “that’s all it is.” Gibson adds: “People have turned it into a bad thing and I don’t necessarily think it is. The best way for me to gauge whether I’m attacking the right people or not is: Am I punching up or punching down? I never make fun of anybody who is already being oppressed, it’s always making fun of the oppressor.”

For those fans whose Throwing Shade fix isn’t satisfied with just 30 minutes every Tuesday night on TV Land, its Los Angeles-based stars share favorite haunts in their current city, below, where you might just catch them when they’re not, well, throwing shade.

Retail Therapy: Los Feliz’s Skylight Books. —Bryan

Field Trip: Take a Broadway Theatre District walking tour. People forget how stunning the architecture in L.A. was before we ruined it. —Bryan

Inside L.A.’s Hottest New Hair Salon https://dujour.com/cities/mare-salon-beverly-hills/ Mon, 11 Apr 2016 17:45:51 +0000 Natasha Wolff http://dujour.com/?p=71523 Three greats team up to open the chic Mare Salon in Beverly Hills

The post Inside L.A.’s Hottest New Hair Salon appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
It’s a homecoming! Hairstylists Mara Roszak and Alex Polillo have partnered with friend and master colorist Denis De Souza—Roszak and De Souza met while working at the nearby Andy LeCompte Salon—to open the new, much buzzed about Mare Salon. Until recently, the in-demand Roszak, who styles the tresses of Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone, Olivia Wilde, Cara Delevingne and Brie Larson, was constantly on the go traveling with clients and decided she wanted a new home base. She teamed up with her friend De Souza, who counts Ashlee Simpson and Jenna Dewan as clients, and Polillo and they found a charming space in a residential stretch of Beverly Hills. But it needed a substantial renovation (it had previously been a beauty salon but was untouched for years). “I’m a very visual person,” says Roszak, “and the environment where I’m working working plays a huge part. Hair can be incredibly intimate, I love that part of the job.”

Luckily, they had a perfect partner in the overhaul of the salon. “Working with Richard Petit and The Archers design firm on this renovation was a dream,” says Polillo. “We had been friends for a long time prior and we had always seen his work and bits and pieces of projects he was working on so when it came time to do the salon and Rich offered, we jumped at the opportunity.” The salon features a glass brick façade, skylights which flood the space with sunshine and sleek Oluce sconces. “We wanted Mare to feel like home as much as we could,” explains Roszak. “Being that it was a high-end hair salon, we needed to deliver some glamour which we tried to accomplish with lighting and the glass block and a copious amount of marble. “Mare was meant to start out as a manageable-sized remodel,” says Polillo. “Within the first few weeks, it was apparent that we were going to need to do much more.”

We sat down to talk with the talented trio about the aesthetic of the salon and their current hair obsessions.

How did you choose the furniture for this space?

MR: Most of the furniture in Mare comes from [L.A.’s midcentury furniture mecca] JF Chen. These pieces include the Putman sofa in the waiting area, the Brandolini Propeller coffee table in the smaller lounge (along with the four Dutch suede chairs), the pair of Gio Ponti glass end tables, the Marble fountain and the long Behringer bench.

AP: We tried to choose furniture that would bring out the feel of ‘home’ and also would be appropriate for a salon.

What products are you currently obsessed with?

AP: Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine is an all-time fave. Sachajuan Ocean Mist, Davines Hair Refresher and Leonor Greyl Eclat Naturel

MR: Santa Lucia Styling Oil from my Roz haircare brand, Davines shampoo and conditioner, L’Oreal Paris Elnett hair spray, L’Huile de Leonor Greyl hair oil and Eclat Naturel are always in my arsenal.

DD: LumiShine hair color by Joico.

What hair trends have you seen recently?

AP: I’ve noticed an abnormal amount of people seem to be growing out bangs right now. And long shags with long fringe.

MR: I’m loving the shag and it doesn’t have to be severe at all. So, a soft shag, I would say.

DD: There is a need to go back to classic old school hair color, beautiful fine highlights all over that are effortless, less trendy and more timeless.

The Apartment by The Line

Concept shop The Apartment by The Line has a new West Hollywood address that showcases the latest luxuries offered by online retailer The Line in a sophisticated environment. Curating products, from fashion to home decor and beauty, and services that contribute to “a life well lived,” co-founder and executive creative director Vanessa Traina Snow tailored the design to be as location-specific to L.A. as the original is to New York’s SoHo. “When we found the second-floor space, it was just too good to be true,” she says. “The light is quite incredible, so we kept an open floor plan to really capture this quality.”

When scouting locations for a West Coast outpost, the people behind NeueHouse, the culture- and community-driven work and social space for cutting-edge rainmakers in film, fashion, design, publishing and the arts, set their sights on Sunset Boulevard’s legendary Columbia Square, built for CBS in 1938. “That corner of Hollywood has been the absolute ground zero for a series of really important innovations,” says co-founder Joshua Abram, who was captivated by the building’s rich history as the site of the earliest incarnation of film studio Universal and most famously as a hub of CBS’s trailblazing radio, television and recording efforts. “We loved that part of the story.”

When Aliza Neidich and Alissa Jacob, co-founders of the Silver Lake retailer Reservoir, moved from New York to the West Coast, they were impressed by the distinctly styled Eastsiders—but puzzled by the lack of a one-stop-shopping destination. “We wanted to make it easier for women to shop for the styles we saw them wearing, as well as introduce them to brands that we thought would be well-received,” explains Neidich. The duo love working with emerging regional designers like This Is Ground, Newbark and Bend Goods. “There’s an extra special sense of pride when a local brand we carry grows and garners national attention,” says Jacob. 3329 West Sunset Boulevard; reservoir-la.com

We’ve seen a great expanse in intimate restaurants with a more casual approach to the environment, but a heightened awareness in cuisine (think Bestia and A.O.C.). I tend to like the feel of classic L.A., like Dan Tana’s, the Polo Lounge and the Tower Bar.

What Supermodels Wear to Work Out https://dujour.com/cities/nina-agdal-vimmia/ Mon, 18 Jan 2016 16:50:23 +0000 Natasha Wolff http://dujour.com/?p=66895 Nina Agdal shares how she gets in shape and looks good while doing it

The post What Supermodels Wear to Work Out appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Nina Agdal, the 23-year-old Danish supermodel who has graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, is now the brand ambassador for the L.A.-based activewear brand Vimmia, which is best known for its compression leggings, sleek jackets and lace-inset sports bras—all made in high-tech fabrics.

Recently, after an intensive group exercise class at New York City’s Tone House, Agdal sat down with DuJour to talk about translating her gym wardrobe to the street, diet tips and must-have workout essentials.

What is your go-to workout?

I have a personal trainer, Andy Speer of Speer Strength, who really has changed my body. I see him two to three times a week if I’m in New York, and mix it up with Tone House, SLT or Y7 Yoga.

Any new workouts you’re dying to try?

I’d love to improve my running skills, so I’ve been looking into Mile High Run Club.

How often do you work out?

I like working out, so I do it at least six times a week. Some days I even do two classes in one day. I like to do a cardio/strength-focused class in the morning and a yoga or pilates in the afternoon

What gets you motivated?

The feeling after a good work out is definitely what gets me up from the couch. Wearing cool clothes that make me feel good is equally as important. My new favorite of-the-moment brand is Vimmia activewear. I love trying out their new collections from leggings to bras and jackets. I feel so great when I treat my body right. After a good workout and a healthy meal, I feel like I’m on top of everything.

What’s the best fitness advice you’ve ever received?

You’ve got to put in the work. You can show up to the gym or to a class and not give it your all, but you won’t get the results you want. If you want your body to change, you have to put in the work.

What are your fitness goals for 2016?

To keep pushing my limits! Also to try out and experience different forms of fitness.

From what have you seen the greatest results?

Andy Speer has changed my body so much. He just knows my body and what works and what doesn’t. He has had a huge influence on the shape I’m in today. It’s definitely effort. My motto is. “what you sweat is what you get”.

What does your daily diet consist of?

I eat clean, with a lot of vegetables and lean protein like organic chicken or white fish. I don’t toss my salad with dressing—that’s where the calories are hiding. Before a shoot or event, I cut down on salt and carbs. I would like to not eat bread or pasta ever, but it’s just too good. I’ll splurge on those in my cheat meals.

What other foods do you indulge with?

I love a good burger or fried rice. When I splurge, I splurge. I’ll have whatever I want, but then the next day I’ll skip the carbs and work out for an hour extra. It’s worth it.

What’s in your gym bag?

I always keep an extra pair of Vimmia leggings and bra in my gym bag to swap out if I’ve had a really intense sweat session! I also keep dry shampoo, face wipes and rosewater in my bag, along with extra ponytail holders.

What’s your workout uniform?

Simple: a great pair of Vimmia leggings and sports bra. I love the their X core capris. They not only feel and look great, but also have amazing performance benefits that keep my muscle warm during my work out. I also love their sports bras, they are so comfortable and wick away moisture. Everything is made so that you can go straight from the gym to the streets, which I love. The compression and moisture-wicking properties of the fabrics keep me dry and looking flattering all day long!

Planning the Perfect Weekend in Ojai https://dujour.com/cities/best-restaurants-shops-hotels-ojai-california/ Tue, 15 Dec 2015 19:50:55 +0000 Amelia Fleetwood http://dujour.com/?p=65471 Known for its Mediterranean climate and calm, country feeling, Ojai is home to vineyards, hot springs, swimming holes and beautiful hiking trails—and is the perfect destination for escaping Los Angeles

The post Planning the Perfect Weekend in Ojai appeared first on DuJour.

Where to stay
The Ojai Valley Inn & Spa offers a top-of-the-line resort experience, featuring four swimming pools, an expansive golf course and a renowned restorative spa.

“At the heart of our vision is our desire to elevate the guest experience,” says marketing director Chris Kandziora, “adding contemporary touches while remembering the historic character and integrity of this destination.”

Perhaps that’s why the scenic spot has played host to star-studded nuptials, including those of Jimmy Kimmel and Kate Walsh.

Where to shop:
If it’s a retail fix you’re after, there’s no shortage of local boutiques. At In the Field, husband-and-wife owners Channon and Bianca Roe stock stunning, bohemian-inspired interior design finds. “We’re attracted to lines that are made in the USA, by friends and local artisans,” says Bianca.

And don’t miss the charming lifestyle shop Summer Camp, which owner Michael Graves says is “inspired by our love for midcentury design and the outdoors.” Expect nostalgic indoor pieces and a wide array of eye-catching flora.

Where to eat:
After you’ve worked up an appetite, check out local favorite Deer Lodge, beloved for its rustic decor and live music. Or drop by Chief’s Peak, a bar that offers an eclectic selection of craft beers and artisanal snacks, operated by the Ojai Rancho Inn team. “It’s a bar where you would feel equally comfortable having a drink alone or meeting new friends,” explains co-owner Chris Sewell.

Feeling peckish? Nothing beats the wood-oven pizza at The Farmer and the Cook, which boasts homegrown fare and an adjoining health shop. The place is practically a second home for many locals.

Getting thoroughly Kundalini-ed at the new mega-size yoga studio Wanderlust Hollywood works up more than a spiritual appetite, so celebrity chef Seamus Mullen aims to nourish body and soul with his in-house café. “Food and wellness are really important to everything I do,” says Mullen, who is eager “to bring those two things together in a single space and create a menu for somebody who values an active lifestyle.”

Hatchet Hall, the latest addition to Culver City’s culinary scene, brings a sense of rustic retreat both in entrées and environs. “We have lots of friends who are fishermen or foragers,” says chef Brian Dunsmoor. “They’ll drop off random stuff and we write the menu every morning accordingly.” The woodsy, taxidermy-adorned “old-man bar,” says general manager Jonathan Strader, recalls “a place that you’d go and hide from your family and get drunk.”

LACMA Makes It Rain https://dujour.com/cities/lacma-rain-room-exhibit/ Fri, 30 Oct 2015 19:30:55 +0000 Diane Gordon http://dujour.com/?p=63295 Indoor rain at the museum's new "Rain Room" exhibit, sponsored by RH, offers temporary relief from the continuing drought

The post LACMA Makes It Rain appeared first on DuJour.

Angelenos praying for rain can seek a quick fix at LACMA, which opened the “Rain Room” exhibit at a special event this week. The room created a sensation in New York when it debuted at MoMA two years ago. For Los Angeles, this particular experiential art holds deeper meaning, given the ongoing drought.

“There’s this triangle between the depiction of nature, art depicting nature, technology, which is ubiquitous in our lives, and me, the human being,” says LACMA Director Michael Govan. “It asks big questions like, Is the future of our world run by technology? Is nature interacting with technology? It doesn’t propose any answers, it just proposes a meditative environment to consider all that.”

He also credited RH and Random International for making the Rain Room installation possible. “Restoration Hardware is more than helping to present it— they were very involved in helping to fund the initial research that led to the making of the piece,” said Govan.

But there’s the matter of the million dollar question: Doesn’t the exhibit waste a lot of water?

”This uses less water than it takes to make a hamburger, said Govan. “It’s all recycled. It’s not a waste of water, it’s a spectacle of water. It brings water to everyone’s attention.”

The Rain Room opens to the public at LACMA on November 1.

A Ferragamo Fête https://dujour.com/cities/ferragamo-los-angeles-store-opening/ Thu, 10 Sep 2015 20:03:19 +0000 Scott Huver http://dujour.com/?p=60806 For the Italian brand's new Los Angeles store opening, the fashion company pulled out all the stops

The post A Ferragamo Fête appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
When making over a classic Rodeo Drive boutique, one always wants to put their best foot forward—especially when one is Salvatore Ferragamo, known for offering some of the most luxurious footwear imaginable for a full century in Hollywood.

To celebrate the 100-year milestone of the titular shoemaker’s tenure furnishing fashionable footwear to L.A.’s rich and famous, the newly remodeled Beverly Hills berth opened its doors for what genuinely felt like a family affair, hosted by Ferragamo executives and members of the brand’s clan and attended by starry Hollywood lineage.

Demi Moore turned heads arriving with daughters Tallulah and Scout Willis; Andy Garcia squired his statuesque daughter Dominik Garcia-Lorido; Amazonian Ireland Baldwin held court near a pair of enshrined, paint-spattered Ferragamos owned by artist Andy Warhol, and other celeb-surname offspring —Lorraine Nicholson, Hopper Penn, Sasha Spielberg —mixed and mingled.

“I got a taste of Ferragamo just by growing up in Los Angeles with their history— they’re one of those brands that you just know about growing up here,” said actress Cody Horn, the daughter of Walt Disney Studios chair Alan Horn, who was thrilled to be clad in a ‘70s-inspired Ferragamo creation. “I never actually got to touch any of it! This is literally the first time that I’m touching any of it.”

Mad Men actress Kiernan Shipka, 15, remembered her first time wearing Ferragamo as something of a Hollywood rite of passage. “I was a bit younger and wore this Ferragamo outfit to an event and I just felt so fancy and lovely in it,” she recalled. “It was such a beautiful, very summery piece, and that was my introduction to becoming very into Ferragamo.”

A century after its eponymous Italian-born founder became the sensation of the celebrity set—iconic admirers have included Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren—Ferragamo remains coveted among the showbiz in crowd, as evidenced by guests including Frida Pinto, Armie Hammer, Camilla Belle and producer Joel Silver.

“There’s a timelessness to Ferragamo, but it’s also very, very modern,” says model Angela Lindvall. “It’s something that kind of dresses the essence of a woman, but there’s a certain strength there, and I love the brand for that.”

That legacy receives direct but subtle tribute within the boutique through various design details, including steel doors modeled after one of the original, elaborate footwear patterns. The founder’s grandson James Ferragamo recalls touring architect Bill Sofield though the elaborate shoe production process. “And he says ‘Your shoes are too inexpensive! You should charge more because it’s so complicated!” chuckled Ferragamo.

“But beside this joke, he really understood the concept of what we make,” adds Ferragamo. “And he was able to transcend that in this store. He was able to bring some elements that you are able to see throughout the store which were actually taken from what he was able to see in the shoemaking.”

A Legendary Sushi Spot’s Big Makeover https://dujour.com/cities/hamasaku-sushi-restaurant-makeover/ Wed, 05 Aug 2015 16:58:22 +0000 The Editors Of DuJour http://dujour.com/?p=59495 Hamasaku evolves with the times and remains on a roll

Long a fixture for high-end sushi-lovers on L.A.’s Westside (and tucked away in a nondescript strip mall), Hamasaku has certainly changed since it opened in 1998. For years, the restaurant was known for creative menu items inspired by a celebrity clientele—the Charlize tacos, the Twilight Roll and other dishes named for Julie Andrews and Candy Spelling. But after more than a decade of serving fame-inspired fish, it was time for an update.

Inside the restaurant

Inside the restaurant

These days, the menu has turned toward more refined Japanese fare, thanks to the leadership of executive sushi chef Yoya Takahashi and executive chef Wonny Lee, and the decor has been overhauled by architect Marwan Al-Sayed (of Utah’s Amangiri resort), who brought in a new “bento box” aesthetic, with blond wood and felt and fabrics in a wide variety of colors and textures. Offsetting the new design is an impressive selection of Japanese art from the collection of the restaurant’s owner, Hollywood power player Michael Ovitz.

“The quality of food and warmth of hospitality has never changed, and as all things need to evolve, it was important to not interrupt the overall ethos we originally created,” says Ovitz, a famed aficionado of Eastern influences. “Marwan Al-Sayed’s interpretation of what we had to offer breathed a new life into the space and mirrors the simplicity that I’ve always admired in Japanese design and culture.”

And that’s change we can live with.

Circ-Cell Dew pH Perfector

Skincare Regimen
“I am constantly product-testing, so there’s really no set regimen, though a couple of my favorites are Circ-Cell’s Dew pH Perfector ($60, circcell.com) and Goldfaden MD’s Bright Eyes ($55, goldfadenmd.com).”

Goldfaden MD Bright Eyes

In-Office Treatments
“Being a former surfer, sun damage is my primary concern, so I rely on Microchanneling and LED Infusion to keep noticeable pigmentation at bay. Though it keeps my feet planted firmly on the earth, gravity is not my friend now I am in my mid 40s, so my wonderful estheticians help me to defy nature with regular Microcurrent treatments.”

Good Fats
“During the summer, people tend to get dry skin from swimming, spending too much time in air conditioning and, of course, being out in the sun. A natural remedy we love and find most beneficial is avocado oil. Not only is it hydrating for skin, it also has healing properties and several health benefits.”

Sun Protection
“The single most important product to protect your skin from harmful rays is a physical sunblock, even on a cloudy day as 80 percent of the sun’s harmful rays pass right through the cloud layer. I recommend that sunscreen be re-applied every two hours, unless you are swimming or sweating throughout the day in which case, re-apply every 30 minutes. Despite claiming to be waterproof, most sunscreens can lose their effectiveness after 30 or more minutes in the water. Even when you are not in the direct sunlight you are still being affected by its harmful rays. EltaMD SPF 41 is one of our favorites. In addition to being non-comedegonic, chemical and paraban-free, it is available in a sheer tint that looks beautiful under makeup or alone.”

Fresh Sugar Roll-On Deodorant Antiperspirant

Staying Cool and Dry
“A spritz of Jurlique’s Rosewater Balancing Mist ($24-$35, jurlique.com) to the face, neck and décolleté can be quite refreshing and will stop the heat and humidity from getting the best of you. I also love Fresh’s Sugar Roll-On Deodorant Antiperspirant ($18, fresh.com) with Fresh Sugar’s Lemon Blossom Perfume.”

Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist

Quick Makeup Fixes
“We find ourselves always searching for ways to look our best while on the go. A clean face is the first step to flawless skin (I love Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes). Another quick fix to looking your best is L’Oreal’s Voluminous Curved Brush mascara. Lastly, Nars Bronzing Powder in Laguna and Orgasm blush instantly gives you a sun-kissed glow with a subtle shimmer. Finishing it off with Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm with SPF will give you a hue of color so you look radiant but natural.”

Murad Clarifying Body Spray

Banish Breakouts
“If you are having a problem keeping your back clean and clear, there may be a very simple fix. Sometimes the conditioner we rinse out of our hair in the shower will remain on our body even though we think we’ve rinsed it off. To avoid breakouts on your back, make sure to put long hair up and give your back an extra rinse before getting out of the shower. Try using exfoliating mitts and a body scrub, like Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish. From there, throw your hair up in a towel and give your back a spritz with Murad’s Clarifying Body Spray ($37, murad.com).

Benefit bronzer in Dallas

Tan Envy
“Custom airbrush tanning is the best option for a flawless tan for a special event, but there are great self-tanners and bronzers out there that will make you glow on a daily basis. Neutrogena MicroMist Airbrush Sunless Tan is brilliant! It’s goof-proof to apply, and the spray can allows you to evenly cover hard to reach areas like your mid-back. Also a great bronzer with shimmer can be applied to face, neck and décolleté to add a shade of color. Try Benefit’s bronzer in Dallas ($28, benefitcosmetics.com) all over and top it off with their blush in Dandelion ($28, benefitcosmetics.com) on the cheeks and you will have an enviable bronze.”

A slew of A-list celebrities and art enthusiasts have paid a visit to Louis Vuitton’s new “Series 2: Past, Present and Future” exhibition—think: Jennifer Connelly, Michelle Williams and Rosamund Pike—and now’s your chance to get in on the action.

The unconventional showcase interprets the influences and inspirations behind the French haute fashion house’s spring/summer 2015 women’s ready-to-wear collection through a series of interactive installations set up in distinctive rooms. Throughout the exhibit, visitors will have the chance to see the 48 looks from their most recent collection inside of a 360-degree projection room, learn the history of the brand’s coveted accessories line, experience what it’s like to be part of a show’s production backstage and much more.

The exhibition is open to the public and will run through February 22 at 1135 N. Highland Ave. This uber-creative and modern fashion experience is surely something you don’t want to miss.

Inside an Award Show Green Room https://dujour.com/cities/graff-diamonds-screen-actors-guild-awards-green-room/ Mon, 26 Jan 2015 19:12:23 +0000 Scott Huver http://dujour.com/?p=52465 Graff Diamonds goes green for the Screen Actors Guild Awards

One of the most dazzling gems at the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards is reserved for the nominees’ and presenters’ eyes only: the posh backstage Green Room hosted by London’s House of Graff, one of the most preeminent purveyors of diamond jewelry on the planet.

“It’s our fifth year back at the SAG Awards, and we’ve had a very special relationship with the Screen Actors Guild and their Foundation,” Graff Diamonds’ Director of Sales Eduard van der Geest told DuJour from the swanky-but-cozy lounge secreted within Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, the longtime home of the SAG Awards ceremony, where several stunning displays of the company’s creations glistened behind glass casings.

“We don’t lend out jewelry for the red carpet,” said van der Geest of the company’s tradition of bypassing handing out temporary freebies in favor of preserving the high-end value of their elite items for the customers who readily pay for them. “Our pieces are very exclusive, and our clients—stars included—who buy our products don’t necessarily need to see others being paid to wear it. Therefore we stay away from it. In order to be reciprocating, we support the Foundation, and that brings them back to us.”

“Graff is such quality,” agreed Kathy Connell, executive producer of the awards ceremony for all 21 years of its existence. “Their jewels are the finest in the world, and it goes with what we’re trying to do here, which is to honor some of the finest performances of the year. And what’s wonderful also is that Graff is donating to the SAG Foundation. It’s a partnership that’s very important, because the SAG Foundation has literacy programs for children and they also have an emergency assistance fund for the actors who aren’t as fortunate as other actors.”

The Green Room is designed as a glamourous oasis for the actors participating in the ceremony to take a relaxing step out of the Hollywood award show for a moment. “This is a very special lounge where they can chill, either before or after their presentation, away from the hustle and bustle,” said van der Geest.

The luxury aspect is something they appreciate, too.

Indeed, the stars can take in an up-close eyeful of some of the most exotic items Graff has to offer. “We brought quite a few unusual, extraordinary pieces, as always, with the majority being one-of-a-kind pieces,” explained van der Geest, like the sapphire diamond cuff. It takes about five men to make in a six-month period. “The reason we do it is because we can do it, and because nobody else does. That’s what Graff is all about: creating something completely unique.”

And the gems occasionally inspire a celebrity with an anniversary, birthday or special occasion around the corner to pick up a glittery gift. “That has happened, definitely!” chuckled van der Geest.

“I love the green room!” exclaimed early visitor Sufe Bradshaw, enjoying her nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for her role on HBO’s Veep, the show’s second in as many years. “A lot actors come back here to decompress and collect themselves before they go back out there. It’s really comfortable—and the jewelry’s exciting! I was speaking to the gentleman who sculpted the jewelry and he was giving me the history of the stones and there was just so much interesting information: where the emeralds come from, where the rubies come from, the diamonds from the different part of the world. I just love that.”

In the meantime, even a Green Room veteran like van der Geest admits to being a little starstruck on occasion. He says he’s enjoyed many encounters with the industry’s top actors, but there’s one he always gets a little extra kick out of—and for good reason.

“Meryl Streep is one of my most favorite people on the screen,” he says. “She’s like a rare piece of jewelry.”

Globe-al Warm-Up https://dujour.com/cities/hollywood-foreign-press-association-banquet-photos-interviews/ Thu, 08 Jan 2015 14:50:07 +0000 Scott Huver http://dujour.com/?p=51932 The group behind the Golden Globes gives back to arts programs

“They’re a crazy bunch!” said Channing Tatum of why he was eager to break bread with the international journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at their annual grants banquet at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on August 14. This particular gathering, though, was altruistic: The group bequeathed $1.9 million to nearly 50 arts education programs—causes close to the hearts of the Hollywood-insider attendees, who grew up dreaming of a life in the arts.

“I probably learned more from The Goonies than I did from school!” joked Tatum, who was joined by Sofia Vergara, Kerry Washington, Morgan Freeman and Robert Pattinson.

Kristen Bell also admired the HFPA’s philanthropic push: “I had a really good music and theater program in high school, which got me into wanting to be a performer,” she told DuJour. “But I went to a Catholic school. If I were in a public school and that was dropped, I have no idea what I’d be doing for a living.”

HFPA president Theo Kingma, a Dutch photojournalist, created a glamorous yet relaxed dinner affair so guests could “stay off their Blackberries.”

Despite the starry elbow-rubbing, “This is not an evening for us,” Kingma, pictured above with Nicole Kidman, explained. “We have the opportunity to celebrate so many wonderful organizations that do so much good work, from film restoration to teaching children to get involved in the film industry and having screenings in third world countries.”
