DuJour spoke with the hotel’s general manager, Jose Angulo, to learn more about the hotel.

What’s your personal favorite room? Why?

Our King Premium Grand Corner Terrace. The wrap-around windows offer the most stunning views of Miami Beach and Sunset Harbour, with plenty of space to entertain friends or family members.

What’s an interesting tidbit about the hotel that speaks to its status as an icon?

The hotel’s striking design is by legendary Miami architect and designer Kobi Karp, who wanted to create an iconic addition to the South Beach scene. Most might not know this, but the design takes its cue from Miami’s oceanic environment. Meant to resemble the hull of a private luxury yacht lifted on its side, our lobby incorporates art displays that resemble the ripples of the Atlantic Ocean. And While South Beach has a reputation for flashy glam, our Sunset Harbour location is an enchanting enclave that’s not your tourist’s typical Miami Beach. Situated at the junction of Miami’s Lincoln Road, our location is a gateway to Miami’s best-kept local scene, where trendy boutiques, unique waterfront dining and unforgettable sunsets are just steps away.

How about one more fun fact about the property?

To support Miami’s incredibly strong art community, we recently launched an Artist in Residence program to highlight local artists and offer guests an exclusive glimpse into the city’s dynamic art scene. For our first artist, we partnered with Milda Aleknaite, a South Florida-based artist who takes inspiration from the vibrant energy of South Florida’s unique environment. Her work can be seen from the porte cochere, lobby, and second, third, and fourth floors. The best part? All art from our artists in residence program will be available for sale directly through each artist.

The post Inside The Newly Opened Mr. C Miami Hotel appeared first on DuJour.

Mr. C Miami, the newly opened luxury hotel in Coconut Grove by Ignazio and Maggio Cipriani of the Cipriani family—who also own hotels in Los Angeles and New York City—was brought to life with beauty and sustainability in mind. The first-ever Cipriani-owned hotel to open in Miami was created by Arquitectonica, an award-winning architecture studio, and interior designer Martin Brudnizki. “We are extremely excited to be part of the revitalization of such a wonderful neighborhood known for its iconic history,” says Maggio Cipriani.

The pool at Mr. C Miami

The new 100-room, six-story boutique hotel boasts a rooftop pool and private cabanas with views of Biscayne Bay, as well as two Italian restaurants: the Bellini rooftop restaurant and Il Giardino creperie and outdoor terrace cafe. Influenced by the dazzling, timeless charm of coastal Italian culture, Brudnizki incorporated mid-century modern furnishings, Murano glass chandeliers and large-scale terrazzo floors into the space.

Mr. C Miami

“The combination of the shapes and materiality of the mid-century yacht-style works perfectly with Miami, a city famous for its oceanfront and also one famous for its own modernist architectural style,” says Brudnizki. “They seem to fuse perfectly and so the hotel feels like it’s always been there.” Along with a nautical flare, Mr. C Miami is also a green hotel thanks to energy-efficient lighting, elimination of single-use plastics and unnecessary food waste and the inclusion of water-efficient amenities, offering guests a luxurious and sustainable stay.

Dirty French Steakhouse

Major Food Group (MFG) has opened Dirty French Steakhouse, a glamorous and energetic interpretation of the classic steakhouse in Brickell. The meat-and-fish-focused menu offers a vast raw bar selection, seafood entrées, aged steaks, sides and a dessert soufflé program. Longtime MFG collaborator Ken Fulk designed the opulent space for maximum lavishness with a nod to the neon glitz of the Magic City, as well as to the sumptuous elegance of legendary institutions like Maxim’s of Paris (think animal prints, jungle patterns, mashrabiya screens and silk lanterns). “We realized that there was a tremendous opportunity to bring a sensational steakhouse to Brickell in true MFG fashion—a sophisticated, contemporary, high-energy culinary blockbuster fit for the most exciting city in the world today,” says MFG co-owner Jeff Zalaznick.

The Doctor is in Miami https://dujour.com/cities/miami-dermatologist-doctor-martin-zaiac/ Thu, 05 May 2022 11:06:01 +0000 The Editors of DuJour https://dujour.com/?p=123930 For Sunshine State residents, dermatologist Dr. Martin Zaiac’s name should be in your little black book

The post The Doctor is in Miami appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Beloved Miami-born-and-bred dermatologist Dr. Martin Zaiac is renowned for his mastery in skin rejuvenation, Botox and fillers, skin cancer detection, Mohs surgery and other skin techniques. After almost two years of mask wearing, his clients were happy to be showing their faces around town again and have been coming back to him in droves. “Since there were two years of minimal treatment, most patients are eager to go back to the maintenance routine of Botox and fillers on a three-time-a-year schedule,” says Dr. Zaiac. “The new Zoom workplace has brought our clients’ faces up close and personal, exacerbating pigment changes and fine lines and wrinkles from years of sun damage. Patients are looking to freshen up their skin’s appearance.” The nationally recognized Dr. Zaiac talks to DuJour about the latest technologies he’s employing on his patients.

Miami-born-and-bred dermatologist Dr. Martin Zaiac

What facial treatments have been popular recently?

We have been doing a lot of Hydrafacials with an extra booster treatment to refresh and hydrate the skin.

What new lasers do you have in the office?

We have a new system called the Halo, the world’s first hybrid fractional laser, which is a resurfacing laser that is stronger than the popular Fraxel and Clear + Brilliant lasers. We combine Halo with the newest platform called the BBL Hero for a dual treatment called the Zaiac Combo. The BBL stands for broadband light, which is a broader application than the older IPL (intense pulsed light).

Some of Dr. Zaiac’s favorite products include Q-SkinScience Forti 5 supplements, ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica and Alastin Renewal Retinol

You’re based in Miami, where sun damage, I’m sure, is rampant. How can your patients combat this?

The BBL Hero technology allows us to treat large areas of sun damage on the neck, chest, arms and legs at a very fast pace. Where it once took hours to do, now it can be done in less than 30 minutes across the entire body with minimal downtime and essentially pain-free. All the sunspots and sun damage will improve in three sessions or less, depending on how extensive they are. The light also stimulates the fibroblasts in the skin to induce new collagen and elastic fiber production, giving skin a rejuvenating effect.

For those people still wearing masks, how can patients avoid maskne?

Here in Miami we were lucky in that we were still able to be outside during the worst of the pandemic, thus minimizing this issue. Try to remove your mask for at least five minutes every hour. Maintain a simple facial routine using a mild exfoliating cream or face wash with glycolic or salicylic acid to remove the older dead skin cells which harbor unwanted oils and environmental dirt. Follow that up with an antioxidant serum which absorbs the free radicals produced in the skin which contribute to aging and skin degeneration and a good sunscreen with at least SPF 30. At night, I love a retinoid, which is one of the most effective anti-aging weapons.

Open Sesame in Miami https://dujour.com/cities/the-tahini-goddess-sally-schimko-interview/ Mon, 18 Oct 2021 18:00:14 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=121885 Sally Schimko of The Tahini Goddess shares her family secrets

The post Open Sesame in Miami appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Born into a family of foodies, the kitchen was always the heartbeat of Sally Schimko’s home growing up in Israel. In turn, she developed a deep love and appreciation for playing in the kitchen. Now Miami-based, Schimko launched a tahini-based product line, The Tahini Goddess, after her tahini recipes took off on social media. “I was inspired and driven to make a business out of it,” she says. “I love to express myself through my food, and it’s how every flavor of my tahini and sugar-free halva was born. Cooking doesn’t need to be difficult and, as a busy working mom, I believe in simplicity.”

The Tahini Goddess embraces Schimko’s roots by using a traditional millstone grounding process with authentic Israeli stones to create its products in Israel. The sesame seeds used in her kosher, vegan and low-carb tahini are roasted at low temperatures to retain as many nutrients as possible. Schimko also prides herself on making creamy, delicious tahini with carefully sourced sesame seeds. “I have always believed that food should come from the source—the people who have made it since the day they were born. Similar to how pasta is best sourced from Italy, tahini is best from Israel,” she says.

The Tahini Goddess pesto tahini

Schimko admits that while she has been eating tahini since she was baby, she first truly fell in love with it in her 20s. “I started traveling on my own more and exploring different cuisines and flavors and truly appreciating Mediterranean cuisine.” More recently, Schimko’s young son and daughter helped inspire her to experiment more in the kitchen with tahini recipes and, ultimately, launch her business. “I wanted them to both experience the Mediterranean lifestyle I grew up on,” she says, adding that though her son was a picky eater, he loved her tahini. “Before I knew it, Ethan was eating more veggies, and I thought that if Ethan could eat healthier and enjoy doing so, everybody could!”

Currently living in Miami with her husband and two children, Schimko feeds off the energy of the city and it is reflected in her growing brand. “We love the culture, the people, the lifestyle and the weather. The multicultural aspect and love for food and culture in Miami makes it a perfect home base.” From new flavorful tahinis to an upcoming collection of Mediterranean spices, Schimko’s menu doesn’t end there. “Having a boutique is definitely on my wish list, but who knows,” she says. “A girl can dream.”

Austin, Texas-based and James Beard Award-winning restaurant group Hai Hospitality has opened Uchi Miami in Wynwood. The one-of-a-kind art installation that welcomes guests was built in collaboration between DRM Custom Masonry, AWN architecture woodworking, and local artist and sculptor Vas Bets. The result is a massive steel structure lined with floor-to-ceiling cinder blocks that are connected by hand-woven rope. Chef Edward Sura created Uchi Miami’s menu with a spotlight on delicious sushi and sashimi as well as other authentic Japanese dishes. The restaurant’s daily happy hour features a selection of shareable plates such as yuca frites and hamachi and a refreshing craft cocktail list including many with Japanese spirits (the Shiro Ryu is a crowd-pleaser made with green tea-infused vodka, coconut, Thai basil, pandan leaf and matcha).

Global hospitality empire Major Food Group (founded by Jeff Zalaznick, Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi) has expanded its New York City restaurant mainstays to Florida. Following the debut of Carbone in South of Fifth earlier this year, the partners are continuing the trend of bringing New York establishments into the Miami restaurant scene with the opening of ZZ’s Sushi Bar restaurant and membership club in the Design District. “With ZZ’s Sushi Bar, we want to build a home away from home for the people of this vibrant, diverse city,” says Zalaznick. “It’s a dream come true to be able to create these dynamic spaces in this remarkable neighborhood.”

In just 10 years, Major Food Group has pioneered a celebratory style of dining at its New York City restaurants, which include The Grill, The Lobster Club, The Pool, ZZ’s Clam Bar, Dirty French and Santina. The brand boasts 19 stars from The New York Times and three from the Michelin Guide, as well as numerous distinctions from the James Beard Foundation. They’ve also successfully opened dining concepts in Las Vegas, Hong Kong and Tel Aviv. Along the way, the brand has forged a partnership with the Robin Hood Foundation, one of New York City’s most important forces in the fight against poverty.

The new Japanese restaurant and membership club was designed by MFG’s longtime collaborator Ken Fulk. “ZZ’s has always been about surprise and delight,” says Fulk. “In Miami, we wanted to amplify these qualities by creating a true urban oasis—a playful yet glamorous environment with old-school touches and bold flourishes. I would describe it as a tropical tuxedo: dressed up but ready to party.” The restaurant boasts a custom marble sushi counter, sleek private bar and lounge, outdoor cigar lounge and a backgammon terrace. “ZZ’s is about exclusivity and luxury,” says Zalaznick. “The best food, the best drinks and the best people. We are excited to share this concept with all of our friends in Miami. It is something very special.”

The two-floor restaurant will have the largest offering of Wagyu beef in the United States along with an impressive menu curated by chefs Masa Ito and Kevin Kim that will feature a number of ZZ’s classics as well as dishes created specifically for Miami. “Kevin and I couldn’t be happier to be in Miami,” says Ito. “This is the experience we have always wanted to bring to life, and it’s an honor to do it with MFG. We can’t wait to get to know our guests, bring them joy, and take our craft to the next level.” Specialties include steaks cooked over custom-built charcoal grills, handmade lobster dumplings, an indulgent Wagyu katsu sando with truffles, innovative sushi rolls and a signature caviar temaki. “For ZZ’s, we went a step further and focused primarily on Japanese food,” says Zalaznick. “Our fish is sourced directly from Japan; in addition, we have the largest selection of Wagyu beef and exotic Japanese steaks in Miami, if not the entire country.”

The ground-floor space showcases curving bentwood banquettes, walls with hand-painted malachite insets, animal-print rugs, brass palm pendant lights and vintage-inspired clamshell dining chairs. For the first-floor patio, Fulk dreamt up a “tiki bar on acid” that combines wicker furnishings in a bespoke banana leaf print with modern shapes to complement the bold angular lines of the architecture. Upstairs, the various spaces offer early ’80s disco vibes with custom banquettes, fringed stools, metallic leather, animal prints, velvet, neon and rose gold shattered mirrored accents. “ZZ’s in Miami is the first Major Food Group private membership club,” says Zalaznick. “It felt right to open a very exclusive, high-end, private club in the Design District. I wanted to differentiate from other private clubs that don’t necessarily place a heavy emphasis on food and rare culinary offerings.”

From Virgil Abloh and the Jonas Brothers to Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, Purple has hobnobbed with every big star who comes to town. As the director of VIP relations for Groot Hospitality for the past 13 years, Purple is tasked with maintaining the scenes and status of nightclubs and restaurants like Liv, Swan, Komodo, Story, Papi Steak—and now The Goodtime Hotel. Purple, who got the moniker for his predilection for wearing purple T-shirts as the new kid in his elementary school, got his start guarding the velvet rope at Miami’s hottest venues like Mansion, Opium, Crobar, Oxygen, Dream and Dolce. After coming to the U.S. from Costa Rica with his family in 1994, he started throwing house parties in high school. “When I turned 21, I was able to go to South Beach and, as I got older, my crowd got older and moved to South Beach with me. There weren’t promoters at that point, so I was working at three clubs in one night.”

The Goodtime Hotels’ pool

A meeting with David Grutman and Joe Lopez changed the trajectory of his career and he soon started working at Liv. “Dave is one of my biggest mentors and champions,” says Purple. “He’s brought me under his wing and is always teaching me how to grow and lead.” But, being Purple is a 24/7 job with very little time off or away from his phone. “I’m so used to it that it’s second nature by now,” he says. “If I’m not bothered by calls, I’m not doing my job.” His Instagram, which shows off behind-the-scenes aspects of his work and life, has garnered 244,000 followers.

“It happened super organically and it’s something I can do that’s special,” he says. “I can show a Miami that no one else sees.”

Purple is extremely health conscious (he maintains a vegan diet) and doesn’t party himself: he’s often found leaving the club at 4 A.M. and heading to a Barry’s Bootcamp class at 6 A.M. “I’ve always said that my health is my biggest wealth,” he says. “I was always was the sporty, healthy guy, never the party guy, and sports always helped me stay clear of bad influences. When everyone else was out drinking and doing drugs, I was running track and playing basketball.”

For a seriously unforgettable South Beach experience, the newly opened Goodtime Hotel from David Grutman of Groot Hospitality and Pharrell Williams will undoubtedly deliver. The 266-room hotel was designed by architect Morris Adjmi and designer Ken Fulk with landscape design by Raymond Jungles. “My first hotel needed to break the mold,” says Grutman. “This is about providing a getaway within a town that’s already known as a vacation spot. When you arrive at the hotel and walk through our doors, it becomes a full-on adventure. I am proud to have worked closely with Pharrell to bring that vision to life.”

The team worked in tandem to create a unique world featuring calming, pastel-hued accommodations, an art deco–inspired restaurant and pool club called Strawberry Moon and an energetic mid-century modern lounge, The Library, as well as an indoor/outdoor fitness center with Peloton stationary bikes and TechnoGym Skillrun Treadmills. “We want the Goodtime Hotel to impart a feeling of both revitalization and that rare, exciting thrill that takes over when you discover something special,” says Williams. “It’s that adrenaline-fueled sensation of entering a whole new setting and a whole new mindset. This place will provide a natural good time for all who come through.”

The entire property feels like a visual love letter to the city of Miami, with the best of vibrant entertainment and dining. Meet The Founder of Natalie’s Juice https://dujour.com/cities/natalies-juice-founder-interview/ Tue, 18 May 2021 15:00:04 +0000 Editors of DuJour https://dujour.com/?p=119757 Natalie’s Juice founder Marygrace Sexton talks about the fruits of her labor

The post Meet The Founder of Natalie’s Juice appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Thirty years ago, Marygrace Sexton’s husband, Bobby, a fourth-generation Florida citrus grower, dreamed of producing fresh-squeezed juice but was too busy to pursue it. She was determined to bring her husband’s dream to fruition and launched Natalie’s Juice, a family-operated, women-owned business that produces some of the finest juices on the market. (The brand is named for the Sextons’ daughter Natalie, who is currently the brand’s vice president of marketing.) Thirty years later, the brand produces 20 different juices, all of which are minimally processed and squeezed daily and can be ordered straight to your door via the brand’s website or found in grocery and specialty stores. We spoke to Sexton about the secrets of her success.

Natalie's Juice

Natalie’s Juice

What made you decide to found this brand?

The story of Natalie’s Juice begins in an orange grove with me pulling my daughter in a red wagon. I knew the superior qualities of Florida citrus firsthand. Though I had exclusive access to the country’s best citrus, I didn’t have the same access to fresh juice unless I squeezed it myself or purchased it from a roadside stand. With the world’s best fruit at my fingertips, I was determined to bring my husband’s idea to fruition and I launched the first batch in 1989.

What were the first juices you squeezed?

Orange and grapefruit. Soon after, we increased the number of juice extractors from two to seven to include lemon and lime juice.

When did Natalie’s Juice launch the new functional juice line?

The Holistics line was inspired by the demand for functional beverages, as consumers have been increasingly using food as a method to improve their overall wellness. The initial line launched with three varieties: Purify (blood orange, grapefruit, dandelion, ginger), Relax (orange, pineapple, chamomile, passion flower) and Resilient (blood orange, elderberry, turmeric, ginger, black pepper), with the newest Aura (blood orange, strawberry, ashwagandha) added last year.

What do you love about living in Fort Pierce, Florida?

Aside from the access to citrus, I love the warm climate and the ability to ride my bike year-round. Each day, I get up at 5 A.M. and cycle at least 30 miles. My dream is to become a competitive cyclist.

Cote

Following the wild success of the New York City restaurant, which was just honored last week with its fourth consecutive Michelin Guide recognition, buzzy Korean steakhouse Cote has brought its award-winning cuisine and luxurious atmosphere to Miami. The restaurant’s spacious interiors were designed by celebrated architecture studio MNDPC and features a private dining room, a signature oval-shaped bar and bespoke, state-of-the-art charcoal grills at each of the many tables. Owner Simon Kim wanted the new iteration to reflect the bold spirit of the New York flagship while infusing a distinct Miami flair throughout the space. Cote has earned several James Beard Award nominations and is the only Korean steakhouse in the world to receive a Michelin star four consecutive years in a row.

Inspired by the Amalfi Coast, Greek islands and Tulum, Miami’s Mondrian South Beach has undergone a $20 million property-wide renovation. The 220-room hotel, which opened on the Biscayne Bay waterfront in 2008, will offer guests a laid-back atmosphere coupled with an elegant, Mediterranean design.

“Brought to life by local Miami-based designers, Peter Oleck and Danny Cubes of OS Design Group, the Mondrian South Beach renovation embodies the spirit of an oceanfront oasis by combining imported natural materials sourced throughout the world, bespoke millwork and artisan craftwork,” says the hotel’s general manager AnaMaria Tolci Soare. “Upon entering, guests are welcomed into a transformed lobby space with two-toned marble patterned floors, flanked by fluted natural coral columns that give way to an open reception with a custom wind-flowing chandelier.” The redesigned guest rooms will feature handmade macramé artwork, natural woods and rattan light fixtures.

The chic new bayside Baia Beach Club at the Mondrian South Beach features a poolside Mediterranean restaurant, open-air living room space, seaside cabanas and boat dockage for club members. “Mondrian has always been a go-to hotel for those looking for a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere, and we’re looking forward to bringing back that incredible energy,” explains Tolci Soare. “Mondrian South Beach’s breathtaking bay views and sunsets will continue to be a guest favorite with a new look and feel perfect for a weekend getaway, memorable event, or a relaxed meal.”

Carbone Miami Opens in South Beach https://dujour.com/cities/carbone-miami-opens-south-beach-florida/ Thu, 04 Feb 2021 18:00:12 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=118410 Global hospitality empire Major Food Group debuts the fourth iteration of Italian restaurant Carbone

The post Carbone Miami Opens in South Beach appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
New York City’s retro-glam restaurant Carbone has opened in Miami’s South of Fifth neighborhood for its fourth location worldwide. Global hospitality empire Major Food Group (founded by Jeff Zalaznick, Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi) has expanded its celebrated red sauce-focused menu and brought on interior designer Ken Fulk to design the interiors. “We were looking for a space that made sense for the last couple of years and we finally have found a perfect place,” says Major Food Group co-owner Jeff Zalaznick. “Carbone was made for Miami and I’m living here full time now.”

Part of the allure of Michelin-starred Carbone in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village is its star-studded clientele that has included stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, David Beckham, Kate Hudson, Kendall Jenner and Taylor Swift and the throwback vibe of the space. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, the restaurant has catered to a well-heeled crowd inside its heated dining structures curbside on Thompson Street.

Ken Fulk, who collaborates on almost all of the brand’s new projects including Sadelle’s at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, has brought Carbone Miami’s interiors to life by drawing inspiration from Carbone New York. “What we love about Ken particularly for Carbone, is that he’s able to not make cookie-cutter iterations to the concepts,” says co-owner Mario Carbone. “He is able to take the identity of it and make it work for a specific location or city so that it feels indigenous to where it is. The aesthetic here is very much Carbone New York on vacation.”

The lush, beachy vibe mirrors the new outpost’s surroundings on Collins Avenue. “It is more tropical and the color palette changes from blues to greens while still maintaining that theatrical mid-century spirit,” says Carbone. The space was previously home to Upland restaurant. “It’s a magical location in one of the best neighborhoods in Miami Beach,” says Carbone. “Jeff found the location first, and like many of our other projects this space spoke to him and he knew instantly that this needed to be Carbone.”

Carbone Miami

From the eclectic furniture and verdant greenery to ornate chandeliers and custom tuxedos for the staff designed by Zac Posen, no detail has been overlooked. The artwork is always an especially important detail for Carbone and was curated by longtime collaborator Vito Schnabel. “Vito, of course, is bringing the classic pasta paintings by [his father] Julian Schnabel, along with an assorted collection of works by a range of artists from rising star Robert Nava to Gus Van Sant and Harmony Korine,” says Zalaznick.

The Carbone team has planted roots in Miami with team members, including famed mixologist Thomas Waugh and executive chef Jonah Resnick, making the move down south for the new outpost. “Miami is very much a sister city to New York,” says Carbone. “To bring this restaurant down here felt comfortable and natural and something we’ve always wanted to do. I don’t know if we are filling a missing void in the culinary scene here necessarily, but I’m excited to bring our style of fun fine dining to the scene here.”

Carbone's Spicy Rigatoni

Carbone’s Spicy Rigatoni

While the ambiance and design elements are signature to the success of Carbone, the food is truly a top priority. With Carbone and executive chef Jonah Resnick at the helm, Carbone Miami will offer signature dishes like the rigatoni in vodka sauce, veal chop parmesan and Cesar salad prepared tableside, with a few seasonal items mixed in. “There are a few additions to the raw bar, including a warm stone crab knuckle sandwich,” says Carbone. “We’re also working on a new pasta or two. Chef Stephanie Prida has a few new desserts here including a coconut lime chiffon cake and chocolate hazelnut cake.”

With the absence of an in-person Art Basel Miami Beach art fair this winter, art collectors and design enthusiasts in Miami can get their cultural fill with the introduction of Miami Design District’s Design Miami Podium. The new concept was held from November 27 to December 6 in the historic Moore Building, where Design Miami first opened in 2005. Craig Robins, founder of the Miami Design District and co-founder of Design Miami, says that the neighborhood has always been dedicated to creativity and he is excited to welcome Design Miami back this year. “The fair is returning to a neighborhood it influenced greatly but which has grown and changed so much. It will be surrounded by so many other rich cultural experiences,” says Robins.

The new, intimate experience featured a number of international design galleries presenting installations at the Moore Building and activations, live events and more across the vibrant 18-block open air neighborhood, the ICA Miami and de la Cruz Collection. “The open-air setting of the Design District is optimal right now—we’re a neighborhood that is spacious by design, with ample public space, contactless parking and great safety protocols in place,” explains Robins. “Our outdoor activations and really low density means that guests can immerse themselves in culture in a responsible way.” Additionally, art galleries that regularly exhibit at Art Basel (like Lévy Gorvy and Mitchell-Innes & Nash) will present installations in free-standing spaces, many staying through the winter.

The best thing about Design Miami’s new pared-back approach this year in its old stomping grounds was that you were surrounded by the most luxurious boutiques, delicious restaurants and, of course, great culture. “We see our guests revel in having this kind of outdoor experience surrounded by amazing public art, design and architecture–whether they are in the District to shop at Hermés or grab a muffin at OTL,” says Robins.

This fall, French fashion house Roger Vivier celebrates the 55th anniversary of its iconic buckle shoe (famously worn by Catherine Deneuve in the film Belle de Jour) by launching a brand-new Belle Vivier Mule silhouette. “The original Belle Vivier is a style that embodies timeless beauty,” says the brand’s creative director, Gherardo Felloni. “The buckle is the eternal signature of Roger Vivier, so it’s always a source of inspiration and a challenge to reimagine every season. It is a more contemporary style but it still carries the two signatures: the metal buckle and the classic “Skyscraper” heel.” The style is adored by fans such as Katie Holmes, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Alba, and we know this wearable mule will be fall’s breakout shoe.

The brand is headquartered in Miami on the fringes of the colorful Wynwood district and has brick-and-mortar locations in
New York City’s SoHo and California’s Venice, eight mobile units (think: Instagram-worthy vintage Airstream trailers) and an online shop. “I began with the idea of creating minimal jewelry for men and now produce more intricate pieces including women’s jewelry, accessories and leather goods,” says Saiger.

Check Out a New Hotspot in Miami https://dujour.com/cities/chef-clay-conley-miami-florida-new-hotspot/ Thu, 07 May 2020 17:00:57 +0000 Rebecca Kleinman https://dujour.com/?p=113071 Palm Beach chef Clay Conley moves south for his newest venture

The post Check Out a New Hotspot in Miami appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
A lot has changed since chef Clay Conley left Mandarin Oriental Miami’s Azul restaurant a decade ago to turn Palm Beach’s staid dining scene on its head with restaurants like Buccan, Imoto and Grato. In the meanwhile, Conley earned five James Beard nominations and started a family with his wife and college sweetheart, Averill. The father-of-two got sober, too, trading wild nights for workouts at daily boot camps with his staff. “The presence shows in the kitchen,” says Conley, who’s making good use of his clear mind with his latest project, Chateau Miami.

In recent years, as skyscrapers and shopping centers shot up in the mainland’s Brickell district, a historic, turreted manse known as Chateau Petit Duoy collected dust. The right investors finally came along to transform it into a restaurant with imaginative interiors by Ken Fulk and tropical gardens by Nievera Williams.

“The space sold me hands down,” Conley says, adding that it’s meant to evoke the feeling of visiting an eccentric uncle’s estate, albeit one located in the Loire Valley. “But we’re not presenting it in a way that’s too precious,” he adds, noting the rambling setting’s warmth and the casual menu, which is anchored by ingredients from local organic farms and a wood-fired hearth from the same fabricator as Buccan’s. “Even if people come in several times a week to dine, they can have different experiences.

It’s more like a neighborhood hangout than a special occasion destination.” Conley didn’t have to alter (or dumb down) his food when he opened Buccan, his foray into Palm Beach. Some of Buccan’s mainstays, such as steak tartare, cross over here. One of Buccan’s in-house pasta makers also made the move south for splurges like carbonara raviolini with bacon and peas held together in a rich mixture of grated parmesan and quail egg. Just because it’s Miami, he doesn’t feel the need to be pretentious or pander to a Latin American demographic either.

“I don’t have to offer more Peruvian dishes, for example, since we’ve always done them,” says Conley, regarding Buccan’s well-received, progressive global fare that he transfers to his new venture. “I’ve had good luck cooking what I love.”

Missoni, a favorite knitwear brand known for its zippy zigzags, has just opened its first M Missoni flagship in Miami. Located in the Aventura Mall, one of Florida’s best places to shop designer, the boutique’s layout and design was fashioned by M Missoni’s Creative Director Margherita Maccapani Misson and Italian architect Barbara Ballabio.

The outpost’s design uses reconfigured archival pieces (think vintage furniture and reproductions of artwork and prints from past MissoniHome collections, seen in past Architectural Digest spreads) interwoven with new and modern details. From its terrazzo flooring and tapestries made from repurposed patchworks, to the use of sustainable design materials like Carrara marble pebbles and recycled glass formed through the pâte de verre method, the store’s design concept completely embodies the brand.

Stop by and shop for a knitted dress or sweater in the new Miami store that makes what’s old new again, and breathes life into Missoni’s storied past.

Gui Jaroschy Is No Ordinary Mixologist https://dujour.com/cities/gui-jaroschy-miami-mixologist-freehand-broken-shaker-bar-interview/ Tue, 08 Oct 2019 16:30:53 +0000 Jamie Beckman https://dujour.com/?p=105745 The Texas-born bartender has created some of the best cocktails in Miami Beach

The post Gui Jaroschy Is No Ordinary Mixologist appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
As cocktail street cred goes, it doesn’t get much more legit than mixologist Gui Jaroschy. His robust résumé includes stints slinging drinks at Miami hotels such as the Delano South Beach, the W, and the Freehand—but it’s that last one that gets people talking.

As one of the original bartenders hired by the co-founders of the Freehand Miami’s vaunted Broken Shaker bar, which burst out of the gate in 2012, Jaroschy helped revolutionize cocktail culture as we know it, concocting out-of-the-ordinary drinks with seasonal ingredients (think: star fruit and just-plucked herbs), many grown in the bar’s on-property garden.

At the lush, poolside Shaker, Jaroschy was known for his tiki-style libations, seeking out regional produce and topping cocktails with offbeat touches like fuzzy flamingos or beautiful flowers—or, as he puts it, “cutting a giant ribbon of watermelon and cupping the whole thing in it.” Did we mention this was pre–Instagram culture?

“It really became all about, ‘Let’s make it fun, and let’s make it out-there, as long as it connects with people and it’s good,’” he says.

His flair for unusual but tasty creations turned heads on a national scale, eventually earning the bar two James Beard nominations for Outstanding Bar Program and a Best New Mixologist nod for himself from Food & Wine—and plenty of job offers. Despite his handful of flings with the marketing side of spirits brands, in talking with Jaroschy, it’s evident that his heart has always been in getting his hands dirty, dreaming up the things that people drink.

So it makes sense that mere months ago, hospitality giant SBE scooped Jaroschy up and crowned him its corporate beverage director, entrusting him with developing the cocktail menus for SBE’s global roster of 175-plus hotel, restaurant, and bar properties, from the SLS Brickell in Miami to the Mondrian in Doha.

Before those pink flamingoes and tropical flowers made him famous, though, Texas-bred Jaroschy earned his seat at the culinary table little by little, starting at age five, when his mother enrolled him in cooking classes. He enjoyed them so much that he pocketed extra allowance whipping up meals for the family each week.

After graduating from the University of Texas with a cultural anthropology degree and moving to Miami in 2006, he worked his way up at the Delano from breakfast waiter to bar manager, soaking up as much knowledge as he could about how an operation works. Every day, he set small goals for himself, gradually getting better at bartending—and surprising people in the process.

“Mixology bridged the gap between a lot of things that I really like, which is making things that excite people, but also I like a bar setting, and I like socializing, so it was a perfect match for me,” he says. From the Delano, Jaroschy went to the W, then to his starmaking turn at the Broken Shaker, then to Generator Hostels—consulting along the way for major brands like British Airways—and, now, SBE, where he’s teaching others and expanding his prowess.

His first project for SBE was SAAM, the SLS Brickell’s Philippe Starck–designed, adventure-themed cocktail lounge decorated with images of Antarctic explorers and rugs that look like giant nautical maps. The two-pronged cocktail menu plays on that spirit: The Base Camp section offers twists on classics, such as an old-fashioned made with rosemary, thyme, and CBD oil; the Into the Wild portion is all about breaking convention, as evidenced by the Cloud Nine, a Korean honey citron tea with basil and vanilla Stoli vodka.

Launching soon is Jaroschy’s cocktail program for SBE’s Katsuya sushi restaurants—one in the SLS South Beach—which will incorporate plum wine. Up next? Collaborating with James Beard Award–winning chef Nate Appleman on cocktails for Umami Burger. Then it’s on to properties in New York and the rest of the world.

But those old, humble post-college lessons die hard: The daily goal-setting approach he used to hone his cocktail-making skills at the Delano is one he now preaches in management at SBE.

“When I teach cocktails to bartenders who maybe don’t have a ton of experience, I make this list of 50 classics that I think every cocktail bartender should know,” he says. “I really try and impress upon them that it’s not so that if a cocktail nerd walks into their bar, they know what the drink is. It’s kind of like learning scales on an instrument or a key on a guitar. If something is in the key of G and you know the notes in that scale, it’s much harder to go wrong.”

Despite the freewheeling culture at the Broken Shaker, it was there, Jaroschy says, that he learned the importance of a brand, even when the Shaker team took their skills on the road, traveling to far-flung locations like Iceland or making drinks in a warming cabin in Aspen. But for all of Jaroschy’s globe-trotting—past, present, and future—there’s no denying his roots.

“I went to Caña Rum Bar here in L.A., and I could have ordered anything, but I had a mojito,” he says of a recent work trip. “I discovered that the bartender was from Miami, and it was a wonderful mojito. It’s like a little taste of home.”

The Man Behind The Best Party in The World https://dujour.com/cities/michael-gardner-interview-ceo-headliner-market-group-miami-liv-nightclub/ Thu, 25 Jul 2019 17:00:51 +0000 Jamie Beckman http://dujour.com/?p=103987 Miami nightlife virtuoso Michael Gardner has his sights set on new territory

The post The Man Behind The Best Party in The World appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
For a nightlife impresario who’s been dubbed a kingmaker by Miami media, Michael Gardner, founder and CEO of promotions company Headliner Market Group, certainly keeps a low profile.

To seek out the mastermind behind LIV Nightclub’s weekly bash LIV on Sunday, nicknamed the Best Party in the World—a pulsating, hip-hop-heavy, performance-packed models-and-bottles bacchanal regularly name-checked on rap tracks—you’ll have the best luck behind the scenes. As the night winds down, Gardner often stands at the door as clubgoers file out, thanking them for coming.

That moment, when he sees the smiles on revelers’ faces—many of them tourists who’ve come to experience Magic City’s storied club scene—is what makes his 18 years in the competitive Miami nightlife industry worthwhile.

“This may be their only time they get to see a Lil Wayne or a Drake or a Puff Daddy,” Gardner says. “Just to hear them come out of there—that’s the joy that I get out of doing it at this point, because I love to see people happy.”

Soft-spoken and self-effacing, the Midwest-born Gardner is reluctant to take credit for his role not only in producing the Best Party in the World—see: New Year’s Day 2012, when more than 100 celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Nas, were in attendance—but also making bona fide stars out of performers like his friend Meek Mill. During LIV’s 2011 Watch the Throne album release party, Gardner allowed Mill to get onstage and perform in front of Jay-Z.

“All the attention shifted to him,” Gardner says of Mill, now a prominent rapper and activist. “I think that was a turning point of his, and we’ve discussed it over the years, so I think it’s safe for me to say that.”

Gardner is also the coordinator of Miami’s Overtown Music & Arts Festival, a free annual event that he describes as a way to give back to the community. The one-day fair, coming up on its sixth year July 13, will feature live music and an all-day gospel stage, a new addition for 2019.

And then there’s Gardner’s Harlem Square cigar bar, slated to open in Overtown around Super Bowl time, near Marcus Samuelsson’s Miami outpost of Red Rooster: The upscale lounge’s vibe is inspired by early-20th-century Harlem. “We’re not necessarily saying you have to come in a zoot suit, but we just want to play off that ambience, with jazz, R&B, live entertainment, and cocktails,” he says.

Gardner’s success has been a long time coming, ever since he was plucked from his Virginia high school and courted for the University of Miami’s basketball team. After setting foot on Miami’s beaches and meeting celebrities, including several Miami Heat players, Gardner was starstruck. He played point guard for the Hurricanes until 1994, later completing his marketing degree at Chicago’s DePaul University. But Miami wasn’t finished with him yet: Gardner moved back to help his cousin with his barbershop, sleeping in the back room to avoid inconveniencing his relatives with families.

Thanks to a push from that same cousin, Gardner used his degree and his celebrity and athlete connections to create a star-studded Player’s Ball event, which he promoted himself, setting his career in motion. But it was in 2008 that Miami Marketing Group’s Mo Garcia called Gardner about throwing a weekly party at LIV that history was made—not just for Gardner, but for the city as a whole: “Traditionally, a lot of nightclubs wouldn’t allow hip-hop here in Miami until the venue was going down,” Gardner says, “but it was in the two months that LIV was open that Mo reached out to me…and it’s been on the up-rise ever since.”

Despite his proximity to the high life and his friendships with famous folks like DJ Khaled, an undercurrent of humility and Christian duty runs through Gardner’s life. “I know where my blessings come from,” he says frequently—and for good reason. In 2005, Gardner had a heart attack at the South Beach nightclub State. Throughout his 11-day stay in the hospital, he was lucid, watching day by day as fellow intensive-care patients succumbed to their illnesses. Of the eight people in the room with him, seven died. As his fear grew, he prayed.

The experience drew him closer to God, Gardner says, strengthening his faith, despite what some might consider a contradiction between praising the Lord and orchestrating the often debaucherous nature of nightlife. The duality bothered him so much he sought counsel from an uncle of his, a pastor.

“He gave me the OK—that it was OK that I continue doing what I’m doing,” Gardner says. “But I always give—always give—praise and honor to God every day for the success, for the failures. I’m just grateful and thankful to be alive.”

Up next for Gardner? Taking Headliner global. Consider this the tip-off.

An eco-chic vibe is evident throughout the four-building hotel, which retains the original façade but features an entirely updated interior, replete with luxe touches such as naturally preserved moss on the walls surrounding the plunge pool; upcycled furnishings sourced by Argentine interior designer Juan Ciavarella and made in Patagonia; and vegan bath products. The beach is just a few blocks away, but the property will spirit you there in a golf cart if you prefer.

The annual swimwear celebration dubbed Miami Swim Week will kick off on July 11, welcoming guests to enjoy an eco-friendly tropical oasis at the Miami Botanical Garden. The multi-day experience will showcase notable brands and emerging designers such as Vitamin A, Tori Praver, Parke & Ronen and Bleu Rod Beattie.

From July 11 to 14, designers and brands will be offered presentation packages from Nu Wave Swim and given access to editors, buyers, influencers and socials. The swimwear brand is led by partners Seth Browarnik and Michele Addison, who both believe sustainability in the swimwear industry is crucial. “Being sustainable and making best efforts to use eco-friendly fabrics along with supporting efforts to keep oceans clean directly affects the swim industry,” explains Addison.

The celebration begins on July 11 with Nu Wave’s opening night party followed by days of fashion presentations, wellness activations, and a closing party on the last day. Guests will have the opportunity to look at new designs while learning more about sustainability in the swimwear industry. “It’s about rethinking plastic usage while experiencing an elevated swim activation,” says Browarnik.

A plastic-free policy is just one of the standards being set at the oasis and other brands and designers are encouraged to reach the same goal. Browarnik says he wants the grounds to be completely free of plastic which means, “having all sponsors and partners limit the amounts they use as well for a larger impact.”

To strengthen their passion for ocean conservation, Nu Wave Swim is also collaborating with Facebook and Instagram to promote and advocate for clean water. Many sponsors such as Miami HEAT, Heineken, and Swim Show will be supporting Nu Wave Swim’s debut at this year’s Miami Swim Week.

Meet Miami’s Magic Man https://dujour.com/cities/miami-florida-architect-kobi-karp-interview-collins-park/ Mon, 15 Apr 2019 15:30:33 +0000 Jamie Beckman http://dujour.com/?p=101376 This architect is revitalizing Miami’s Collins Park neighborhood—and building cutting-edge oceanside luxury condos, too

The post Meet Miami’s Magic Man appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Kobi Karp is an architect of many talents. He speaks just as lovingly about the slender, delicate Art Deco finial of Collins Park’s sweetly chic, millennial pink–garnished boutique hotel The Plymouth, which he recently restored to its original 1940s glory, as he does of working on French architect Jean Nouvel’s hypermodern 14-story glass-walled waterfront Monad Terrace residences, with its Babylonian hanging gardens, slated to open this spring.

After an early childhood spent running through orange groves in agrarian Israel; an adolescence and college career in frigid, snowy Minneapolis; and, now, more than two decades under his belt in sunny Miami, nature is close to Karp’s heart—and his work.

“What was very special about The Plymouth is that it has a terrazzo-finish veranda that wraps around the corner,” he muses. “So during the day, it allows people to sit nicely outside and have a cocktail and see the Bass Museum being lit up by the natural tropical sunlight. It has a very strong stone facade—coral stone—which comes to a golden glow in the afternoon.”

A rendering of Monad Terrace residences

And the cutting-edge Monad? “It’s an opportunity to build a glass building facing one of the best views that we have here, which is the sunset over the skyline of downtown Miami,” Karp says. The structure was designed to meet category-five hurricane impact regulations and the new wave and base flood elevations projected due to global warming.

Capturing the romance of the Miami sunset and nailing historical preservation as well as sleek, destruction-proof towers is a feat that Karp’s firm is uniquely qualified to pull off. After all, Karp is a man who, years ago, while working on Miami’s Seacoast Towers, sought out the legendary (and then near-forgotten) Morris Lapidus, architect of midcentury “Miami Modern” hotels including the iconic Fontainebleau, and brought him back into the fold of the American Institute of Architects. On the flip side, Karp is known for his glossy overseas structures and his role in building the Capri South Beach high-rise condos, a project he describes as a prelude to the Monad.

Karp’s arguably most important current project is an extensive revitalization of the once-neglected Collins Park neighborhood, which encompasses The Plymouth, the Miami City Ballet, and the aforementioned Bass Museum, housed in a striking 1930s Art Deco building. One of his imminent undertakings is the Collins Park Hotel, which will join four historic buildings, with an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living, including tropical gardens, pools, and rooftop lounges.

“Historic preservation is what tells us where we’ve been,” Karp says. “So many of these buildings were built in the middle of the industrial age, or during the Deco Streamline or Bauhaus, where less was more. We come along almost 100 years later, and we have an opportunity to create a building of our time, and at the same time, restore and preserve the original historic structure—and recycle it.”

On Friday, December 7 during Miami Art Week, VIPs including DJ Brendan Fallis, Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick, magician David Copperfield and Chef Thomas Keller descended on the 95-meter superyacht Kismet for Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts’ third “Pop Down” event. The idea behind the series is a play on a pop up, aimed at transforming unexpected locations beyond the walls of its hotels and resorts. Guests enjoyed specially curated dishes and cocktails by an international roster of 16 Four Seasons mixologists, chefs and pastry chefs–all handpicked from the brand’s properties around the world. Questlove DJ’ed on the second floor deck while attendees noshed on, well, everything.

Wherever you went on the seven-story yacht (owned by Four Seasons Toronto owner Shahid Khan), you were surrounded by food and beverage offerings from master mixologists like Fatima León, of Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City, Keith Motsi, of Four Seasons Hotel Beijing, and Ashish Sharma, of Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur. León, whose complex and tropical “Surrealismo” cocktail with tequila, guava juice, cinnamon syrup, ginger, cardamom and lemon juice finished with cotton candy was a huge crowd pleaser, relished the opportunity to create a special drink for the occasion. “The experience of being here in Miami for Pop Down has been amazing,” says León. “The colors, the people and the cocktails have been so inspiring for me during this trip.” León is planning to update the menu at her Fifty Mils bar in Mexico City and due to the popularity of this cocktail, she’ll likely add the creation next year.

Michelin-starred Chefs Daniel Boulud, of Café Boulud and d|bar at Four Seasons Hotel Toronto, and Chef Mauro Colagreco, of the newly reopened Four Seasons Palm Beach, showcased luxurious dishes like caviar, crab and lobster gelee and an egg cup stuffed with truffle, mushroom and fois gras bavarois (Boulud) and a warm mushroom tart with parmesan and black truffles (a signature at Colagreco’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants-ranked restaurant Mirazur) and pumpkin ravioli with white truffles (Colagreco). Chef Colagreco was excited to head up the coast to Palm Beach for the hotel’s opening. “It’s an amazing project, a very beautiful oceanfront hotel so there is lots in common with my restaurant in Menton, France,” says Chef Colagreco. “We have a pizza oven, tandoori, yakitori, many methods of cooking with fire.”

“Shahid Khan is so generous to invite us all to be here on his magnificent ship,” says Boulud. “I’ve been very happy with my relationship with the headquarters in Toronto. Tonight, we brought Cafe Boulud Toronto and a little bit of Restaurant Daniel with our charcuterie selection tonight; a hallmark of our Toronto restaurant menu.” Boulud has been busy this week in Miami visiting friends in the art world as well as spending time with chefs like Brad Kilgore at his new restaurant Kaido in the Design District. “Miami’s cultural life is vibrant,” says Boulud. “The blend of South American culture with European and American here in Miami is unique.” Boulud is an avid art collector, especially of artists that he’s gotten to know personally including Vik Muniz, Manolo Valdés, Chuck Close and Esteban Vicente.

On the lower deck spa level (compete with barber shop, sauna, pedicure station and hair salon no less), the sensorial experience continued as guests were invited to create customized perfumes from French fragrance house Atelier Cologne while surrounded by citrus trees. Also on the boat, two-story video walls displayed the works of Spanish artist Ignasi Monreal, whose digital paintings are featured in Four Seasons: The Art of Hospitality, the brand’s new coffee table book from Assouline. But that wasn’t the only artwork on display. En route through Island Gardens Marina where the superyacht was docked for the occasion, attendees were greeted by Glass Horizon, the latest Skynet installation from artist Patrick Shearn and studio Poetic Kinetics. The 35-foot high sculpture was constructed using rope, monofilament net and approximately 67,000 holographic Mylar streamers spanning 10,800 square feet and was on view as a public art work throughout the week.

The brand has plans to bring the next global event series to Hong Kong in early 2019 during Art Basel.

A Creative Culinary Collaboration in Miami https://dujour.com/cities/groot-hospitality-david-grutman-pharrell-williams-miami-swan-restaurant-bar-bevy/ Wed, 03 Oct 2018 15:00:51 +0000 Rebecca Kleinman http://dujour.com/?p=97857 Spend morning till well past midnight with restaurateur and nightlife king David Grutman

The post A Creative Culinary Collaboration in Miami appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Groot Hospitality, the brand founded by Miami nightlife impresario and restaurateur David Grutman, is named for its founder’s beloved nickname by clientele with thick European accents. It also happens to be the Dutch translation for “big.” The latter proves fairly fitting, since the Florida-born entrepreneur has huge ambitions for his hospitality empire. Grutman created the label to house his diverse ventures, including star-stacked LIV nightclub and second club Story; Komodo, a pan-Asian dining and drinking den; OTL, a millennial-friendly all-day café, and Planta, an upscale, plant-based culinary import from Toronto. From morning until the wee hours, one never has to leave his world.

“I want to program peoples’ days and be the best place out there for each part,” said Grutman, who makes the rounds to each establishment with a politician’s stamina. “My businesses don’t just run. They need to see my face. Hospitality isn’t just about saying hi either. It’s about caring.”

David Grutman (photo credit: Kristin Bjornsen)

This fall, Grutman’s 13,500-square-foot collaboration with Pharrell Williams launches in the Miami Design District. The international meetup spot holds Swan restaurant and Bar Bevy with interiors by Ken Fulk, a bicoastal designer known for detailed, narrative settings. Regional talent Raymond Jungles composed its equally thoughtful landscaping.

“The neighborhood has high-end shops but doesn’t have a restaurant where people can hang out all day with great music that also delivers on food over and over again,” he said, of its menus for mixology and small plates with simple fare. “It’s clean eating because people care about where their food comes from now.”

Grutman has grown considerably since his South Beach bartending days in the Nineties. Kaia, his daughter with his Brazilian wife, Isabela, turns one in September. He boxes, works out with a trainer and opts for the grain bowl at OTL. Komodo is gearing up to expand to other cities, while LIV, which already has an outpost at Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins, has popped up at other major sporting and music events such as the Super Bowl and Grammy Awards. Rather than be pigeonholed in his late-night niche, Grutman likes to keep everyone guessing.

“People didn’t think a nightlife guy would open a plant-based restaurant,” he said, already dreaming of his next move. “I’d eventually love to be in the hotel biz.”

Located inside the St. Regis Bal Harbour, Chronus Lifestyle Influencer Gallery deals in billionaires’ baubles. With its unparalleled assortment of exclusive luxury watches and jewelry, the concept is designed to wow the resort’s discerning clientele who’ve been there, done that. “We have to surprise them with product,” says Proprietor David Veitsman, a New York-based gem dealer who also founded Concepts of Time, a venerable source for precious gemstones, custom haute jewelry and fine art. “The theme changes every day, and there’s new merchandise at least every four days.”

The décor alone makes them moths to the flame. Though its prime spot in the hotel’s lobby is impossible to miss, shoppers can’t help but be dazzled by real gold leaf accents and an ornate metal screen façade that encases the boutique like a jewel or exotic bird. Walls in pale gray suede provide a foil for gleaming, state-of-the-art, high-definition screens.

“We can change the mood instantly from a racetrack to the Sistine Chapel,” said Veitsman, of the impressive tech amenity standing in for wallpaper, part of his detailed buildout. “The project was three years in the making.”

Rebellion timepieces collection: Predator, Re-volt and Twenty-One as well as Marina B (babovelow) pieces will be sold in the store.

Marina B—as in Bulgari—is among several limited-edition collections. Other one-off pieces include brooches that can also be worn as pendants, such as a white diamond and blue topaz seahorse. European and British designers have prominent placement, and expect to find a little bit of everything, including Stephen Webster, Massika, Pasquale Bruni, Fabergé, and Kwiat. Rebellion Timepieces, a Swiss industrialist’s passion project, is also rare here. Its Predator S watch with a smaller case and honeycomb pattern has been redesigned for three hands and a new date display.

As a Miami resident, I’m most excited about creating a place that I personally want to go to and can recommend to my friends and associates,” says Neil Shah, president and chief operating officer of Hersha Hospitality Trust, a multi-billion-dollar hotel and real estate firm. “We’re offering unique, non-touristy ways to see Miami by land, air and sea.”

Among the company’s 49 hotels across the country, six are located in South Florida, including the Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club in Miami Beach, which reopens following a multi-million-dollar renovation. Now part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection, the Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club includes 357 guest rooms featuring a Mediterranean blue-and-white color scheme, bold prints from Greek key to palms, and offering beach and city views.

To transform original architect Roy France’s 1940s Art Deco gem, interior design firm Bill Rooney Studio channeled the European Riviera, and the Cadillac is reopening with a beachside restaurant, Bungalow by the Sea that offers a raw bar and rosé-all-day concept. The Amalfi Coast is also represented through chef Manuel Mattei’s Donna Mare trattoria.

“We saw a transformation in demographics, such as families, who were looking for cultural activities and beachfront resorts as opposed to South Beach’s party crowd and boutique hotels,” says Shah of the hotel, that captured his attention with the historic structure’s strong bones and heritage, and its hot neighborhood, Mid-Beach, which is a straight shot to the airport and near all the best art and shopping in Wynwood, Bal Harbour and the Miami Design District. “As part of our European sensibility, we want our guests to truly feel a connection to our community.”

Last Thursday, party guests of the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Resort and Whispering Angel rosé saw la vie en rosé as they drank to the hotel’s revamped poolside escape, so aptly called the Oasis Rosé Cabana. The Cabana, brought by new pink wine The Palm by Whispering Angel as well as the resort, features rosé-pink décor and palm-print pillows to match both the scenery and the bottles of rosé that come complimentary with the cabana rental. While oysters and crostinis wafted around, The Palm by Whispering Angel kept pouring in honor of the partnership, as well as to fête the cabana’s new seasonal makeover. With their glasses in hand, the guests (who included legendary sommelier Paul Chevalier and model Kayley France) got to linger poolside as well as preview the new Cabana space. Inanimate guests included a hot-pink camel mannequin with “Save Water, Drink Rosé” painted across the body for guests to have photo ops with.

Feeling thirsty? This rosé-centric experience, which officially became available on Friday, comes complete with butler service, complimentary WiFi, and TVs to quench all your summer cravings.

Inside the Reign of Alan Faena https://dujour.com/cities/alan-faena-miami-faena-district-interview/ Wed, 25 Apr 2018 15:00:02 +0000 Samuel Anderson http://dujour.com/?p=94117 The prince of Miami looks ahead to his beachside empire's summer offerings

The post Inside the Reign of Alan Faena appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
If Miami’s Faena Hotel has a mascot, it may be the gold-plated woolly mammoth statue parked on its steps. But the hotel’s eponym, developer Alan Faena, is just as much a visual representation of the opulence and grandeur inside. With his signature white suit and hat (which is depicted in his company’s logo) and radiant, bohemian energy, the Argentine hotelier is a testament to what life in Miami can be.

Despite the over-the-top glamour he exudes, Faena’s inspiration for Faena District — the real-estate concept he originated in Buenos Aires before importing it to Miami, was egalitarian in spirit. “We wanted a more democratic way of doing art and a way to open it to the public. It was a pioneering concept,” Faena says. When Faena’s partner Len Blavatnik proposed they expand stateside, they held onto those principles. “I think the concept in Miami is very similar because it’s based on culture and art. At the end of the day, it’s elevating people’s lives.”

Faena’s stake in culture runs deeper than his career in real estate. In the ’80s, he founded the fashion label Via Vai, which, he says, promoted a freedom of expression that was new to Argentinians at the time. “It is an honor to have had one of the most important fashion companies in Argentina from the moment that democracy was founded,” he says, referring to the fall of dictator Jorge Rafael Videla. “One of the ways people express themselves is through fashion; it was a big statement and a movement at the time. Today, that is my way of doing things.”

Indeed, Faena’s own distinctive style is seen throughout Miami’s Faena District, a collection of five structures including Faena Hotel, the Faena House and Faena Versailles Contemporary residences, and Faena Forum, a mixed-use venue for cultural happenings like a recent collaboration with the Museum of Ice Cream. In June, Faena will enter the retail market with Faena Bazaar, yet another platform for spreading arts and culture to the people. “We have been developing all kinds of Feana products … and working with the best minds of the world to create what would be like a utopia,” he says, before adding, “And today it’s no longer a utopia. It’s a reality.”

Driving an Aston Martin down Ocean Drive is a thrill that might only be surpassed by taking up residence in one of the luxury car company’s new condos. The Aston Martin Residences broke ground in downtown Miami in the fall and the 66-story waterfront tower is expected to be completed in 2021. Simon Sproule, Aston Martin’s vice president and chief marketing officer, said: “Aston Martin is on a growth trajectory globally and across the United States. Our partnership with G&G Business Developments forms an important part of that growth story and of our desire to bring our brand to new audiences across the world.” The price of a condo ranges from $600,000 to $50 million and the complex will feature a fitness center overlooking the ocean, virtual golf room, art gallery and two cinemas, as well as a full-service spa, a beauty salon and, of course, a garage.

“Vocabulary of solitude,” Ugo Rondinone. Installation view, coming to The Bass.

The unveiling will include new solo exhibitions by Pascale Marthine Tayou, Mika Rottenberg, and Ugo Rondinone, each playfully reflecting themes of internationalism and inclusion: Cameroonian-born Tayou created an LED wall installation that spells “Welcome” in 70 languages; Rottenberg’s Cosmic Generator, an immersive sculpture and video installation, examines the global economy; and, taking up the entire second floor, Swiss-born Rondinone’s exhibit features 45 life-size clowns.

The post The Real Fashion Houses of Miami appeared first on DuJour.

]]>

Starchitects are so last year: Miami’s real estate market has officially moved on to fashion. Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld and the Fendi family are all involved with luxury residential towers along the coast. And these A-listers aren’t simply lending their names to projects. “We were surprised by how involved Armani gets,” says Carlos Rosso, of The Related Group, which is co-developing Residences by Armani/Casa in Sunny Isles Beach. “He talks about ‘dressing’ rooms like he’s dressing women.” Whereas buyers can purchase Armani’s entire vision, including $200,000 of onyx for master baths alone, Lagerfeld is focusing on a set of lobbies for his condominium foray with The Estates at Acqualina. His inspiration is piazza life in ancient Rome, and is centered around a dramatic fountain. “Lobbies are significant because they offer the first impression of the building,” he says, “and they are the spaces where people come to socialize daily.” Armani and Lagerfeld’s properties won’t be completed for a few years, but Fendi Château recently finished construction of the house’s first-ever residences in the town of Surfside, next to Bal Harbour. It’s a true Fendi fantasy, from mother-of-pearl cabinetry to Calacatta marble in the bathrooms. “Our buyer is looking for brand,” says Manuel Grosskopf, CEO of Château Group. “The building has a wall piece that’s in Fendi stores around the world.”

Shoptalk: Brickell City Centre https://dujour.com/cities/brickell-city-centre-south-beach-miami/ Tue, 29 Nov 2016 20:00:50 +0000 Caitlin Heikkila http://dujour.com/?p=80622 From the dining to shopping, this retail destination is hot

If there’s one language all Miamians speak, it’s shoptalk. Brickell City Centre, the latest retail destination to open in the 305, boasts not only Brickell’s first Saks Fifth Avenue in 30 years but also its first-ever food hall: a three-story, 38,000-square-foot mecca devoted to Italian delicacies. Miamians are giddy over the new U.S. outposts of Acqua di Parma and Italian menswear line Boglioli—just two of the international brands among the center’s 85 tenants.

Brickell City Centre

“We have a strong mix of menswear,” says Debora Overholt, vice president of retail for the developer, Swire Properties. “Several have set a precedent for Miami, like Stitched, which offers made-to-measure suits and a signature scotch lounge.” Other anticipated boutiques include Richard Mille, Westime and Chopard. The dining program is equally eclectic, from a third location of local favorite Pubbelly Sushi to the inaugural American iteration of South African golfer Ernie Els’ Big Easy Winebar & Grill.

Ahead Of Their Time https://dujour.com/style/westime-watch-retailer/ Wed, 23 Nov 2016 20:00:38 +0000 The Editors of DuJour http://dujour.com/?p=80498 The opening of three new Miami boutiques marks a monumental next chapter for Westime—one of the world’s top watch retailers—and the family that owns it

The post Ahead Of Their Time appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Over the past three decades, the family-owned watch retailer Westime—known for its singular inventory of one-of-a-kind timepieces by Richard Mille, Hublot and Ernst Benz—has built a small empire of retail stores in its native California. In doing so, it has also built larger than life reputations for its father and son executives: founder, John Simonian (who was named one of five “watch world decision-makers” by industry bible JCK and christened the “watch don” by another leading authority), and current president, Greg Simonian. The duo’s perch at the top of their industry will only grow firmer over the next month, as they open three boutiques—including a fifth Westime location—in one of the country’s hottest commercial projects: Miami’s Brickell City Centre, across the bay from South Beach. For the Simonians—who’ve already achieved larger than life status in the watch world—this expansion is more than just another notch in the company’s belt: It’s a huge step toward physically dominating a market they and their brand already has a firm grip on.

Depending on who you ask, Westime’s evolution from a single brick-and-mortar location (which John opened in 1987) into a multi-store operation with deep global roots—and a client list to match—could be attributed to many things, but no one will deny one key component: its founding family’s innate passion for watchmaking. Both John and Greg have said they each started in the business at age 12 (John, working for his father, and Greg, for his). The patriarch has offered his own simple scientific explanation: “I guess this is genetic,” he has said.

As humble as John may be, genes alone do not equal Westime’s success (for every thriving corporate dynasty there is one that undoubtedly fails at torch-passing). A big part of their recipe is the company’s unique business model, which allows its executives to function as both distributors and retailers. Of this strategy, John has said, “[Several] years ago I started promoting unknown or start-up brands that nobody would touch. I decided to promote them in the stores. Having done a good job promoting them, I became in charge of the whole distribution channel.” Owning the front and back ends of his business allowed John to get in early with makers like Richard Mille, where he is now the CEO and President of Richard Mille U.S.A. Other covetable, niche labels Simonian distributes include Greubel Forsey, URWERK, and MCT. And, despite the six figure price tags affixed to some of these makers’ timepieces, the brands remain in high demand for both new editions and secondhand pieces alike.

As collecting gains momentum among the most serious horologists, the Simonians’ commitment to bringing rare, one-of-a-kind after models to market only stands to grow more lucrative. When it comes to their own timepieces, though, the executives admittedly take different approaches to the growing practice. While John often jokes his first watch was “a sundial in his backyard,” Greg, who assumed his position of president in 2010, keeps his first piece—a Longines Legend Diver—quite close (in a Buben & Zorweg watch-winder to be precise), and still sports it often. “It remains my go-to for outdoor activities, especially watersports,” he says. “Something cool and unique that you notice right away is that it has two crowns. One is used to set the time, like a traditional crown. And the other is used to rotate the inner bezel, a feature that allows divers to track how much dive time they have remaining.” John adds that acquiring this piece began a deep dive of a different sort and, nowadays, choosing a favorite among his pieces is no easy task. And if Westime’s latest expansion is any indication, it will only grow more challenging as his company, and its world-class inventory, continues to grow.

A Miami Store You Need to Know About Now https://dujour.com/cities/romero-britto-gallery-concept-store-lincoln-road/ Mon, 01 Aug 2016 17:00:36 +0000 Rachel Wallace http://dujour.com/?p=76176 A new Romero Britto gallery and concept store will be opening soon

The post A Miami Store You Need to Know About Now appeared first on DuJour.

Romero Britto and his vibrant art have become symbolic of Miami—although he’s anything but domestic, with a calendar that has recently included travels to China, Italy, England and beyond for shows and projects. He’ll even be at the opening ceremony of the Olympics in his native Brazil, and as an official ambassador he had the chance to carry the torch as it passed through his home city of Recife in June.

Travels aside, Britto still calls Miami his home, and will soon be expanding his ubiquitous presence in the city with two new storefronts on Lincoln Road. Britto has occupied a traditional art gallery on the famous pedestrian mall for the past 21 years, and he will be moving that gallery to a larger space at 1102 Lincoln Road. As for the second storefront, it will be a concept store which will sell Britto collectibles. “I’ve been thinking, for quite a while, to open my Britto store to sell collectibles and limited editions, and it was a great moment to do it because of the new location. It was just perfect timing to do it,” says Britto. “It’s a perfect place to be there on Lincoln Road.”

Both projects are scheduled to open their doors some time in August.

Max Mara put on its dancing shoes this spring when the Italian fashion house hosted a performance at its store in the Design District. The event starred Javon Jones, a Detroit-based dancer, choreographer and winner of the first Max Mara Young Visionary Award for the National YoungArts Foundation. Sarah Arison, a YoungArts board member, was among the guests watching the high school senior’s short contemporary ballet set to a tune by James Blake.

Afterward, Max Mara presented him with a Christofle silver prize and $10,000 to put toward his dream. “I applied to YoungArts because other participants said it was life-changing, which is something you don’t hear a lot anymore,” says Jones, who began dancing in eighth grade. “The Max Mara Young Visionary Award aims to foster the future of art by recognizing and cultivating young talent,” notes Maria Giulia Maramotti, the brand’s U.S. retail director. “Javon’s original, fearless and provocative craft is emblematic of what will define contemporary art and inspire future generations.” 106 NE 39th Street; maxmara.com

TALDE Miami Beach

Top Chef followers have another restaurant to love, now that Dale Talde has joined Miami’s neverending celebrity toque parade. After wooing diners in Brooklyn and Jersey City with his all-encompassing Asian crowd-pleasers (Korean fried chicken, crab fried rice), the Chicago native expanded his namesake empire to the Thompson Miami Beach. “I love Miami’s diverse flavors, and its culinary scene is booming,” says Talde, whose inviting vibe and addictive dishes fit right in. And he obviously gets Latin dining hours: “The late-night noodle program features more options for spring.” Seasonal specialties include lamb shoulder rubbed with Vietnamese spices and a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds and mint; it’s served on bao buns with pickled red cabbage.

Uber for Yachts Has Arrived https://dujour.com/cities/immidia-app-news/ Tue, 15 Mar 2016 13:50:55 +0000 Katharine Smyth http://dujour.com/?p=70294 A new luxury app takes center stage

The post Uber for Yachts Has Arrived appeared first on DuJour.

]]>

Imagine an app that allows you access to a fleet of luxury yachts, delivered immediately and offering first-class amenities such as welcome ambassadors, expert crew and personalized catering. That’s the idea behind IMMIDIA, launching March 15th in Miami and coming soon to Dubai, St. Barths and the French Riviera. IMMIDIA is the brainchild of CEO Christophe Chauvin, former GM of five-star Hotel Byblos in Saint-Tropez. His company—which will soon be expanding to offer vacation villas, jets and car rentals—promises to revolutionize the luxury lifestyle experience.

Below, Chauvin talks to DuJour about French luxury, environmental stewardship and his favorite yachting destinations.

The IMMIDIA luxury app

The IMMIDIA luxury app

Which aspects of the app are you most excited about?

First of all, it’s really elegant. You only have one opportunity to give your clients the “wow effect” and for me, IMMIDIA does the job. Second, it’s instant booking, which will be a major change in the way our guests are consuming luxury services.

How do you see IMMIDIA as an extension of your career in luxury hospitality?

The luxury industry is moving really fast right now. It used to be very old-fashioned, but now you need to be connected, you need to be proactive and you need to answer your client within the next 15 minutes. So our platform comes at the right time, I think.

If I wanted to charter a yacht on IMMIDIA this afternoon, how would I do it?

You could do it in five minutes from your smartphone or online and the yacht would be delivered within two hours. It’s unprecedented: you can do it anytime, anywhere.

Tell me about your partnership with the TerraMar Project, an ocean conservancy organization. Why is this partnership important to you?

We are in the transportation business, which means that we consume a lot of energy and we have to reward the environment for that. The TerraMar Project was a natural fit. Protecting our oceans is a responsibility we all have and we at IMMIDIA want to show others the way.

IMMIDIA CEO Christophe Chauvin

IMMIDIA CEO Christophe Chauvin

What is your ideal yachting destination?

That’s an easy one! Corsica. It’s the gem of the Mediterranean. It has the most beautiful beaches in the world and in the summer you can go for months without a single storm. But Sardinia would also be a good match.

Whom would you take with you?

My family and friends. Yachting is all about conviviality—that’s why I like it. You have to really like the people you’re with because you have to keep everybody on board. You can’t just throw them in the sea!

What is your favorite yacht?

I don’t have a favorite. I believe that as long as you’re on the sea, it’s always magical. But we do have some favorite brands, for instance, Riva. The feeling on those boats is very special. They’re completely handmade and the sounds and materials are just spectacular. It’s like driving an old car.

You have said that your ultimate goal is to share the French luxury lifestyle on a global basis. What does French luxury mean to you?

In France, knowledge of luxury services is in our blood. Even if French people are sometimes a bit too proud of themselves, I truly believe we have the number one place in this industry. The key to success is definitely human relationships. You can have the best app, the best hotel, the best yacht, but if you don’t have the right people, there is no point.

A trendy pop-up restaurant called Prey is on a mission to save the planet. Chef Bun Lai’s sustainable sushi spot took over the rooftop of 1 Hotel South Beach at the start of the South Beach Food and Wine Festival in February, and will be serving eco-friendly sushi with ingredients like catfish, Asian carp, mugwort and wild hog until April 30th.

A dish at Prey

Sounds unusual, right? That’s because many of the ingredients used at Prey are invasive species that damage the environment due to overpopulation. The philosophy is that hunting only these species will help bring balance back to the ecosystem.

“By utilizing invasive species, by catching and foraging for them ourselves, we reconnect with the living planet that nourishes us,”says Chef Bun Lai, who has personally hunted, dived and foraged for ingredients. “People who have a relationship with nature understand that we have to nourish and protect the planet that nourishes and protects us.”

Need a Birkin before dinner? It’s easier than ever thanks to Hermès’ new 13,000-square-foot flagship in the Miami Design District. Denis Montel, artistic director for architecture firm RDAI, channeled the city’s minimalist mood and lush vegetation, even planting a tropical Guiana chestnut tree at the store’s entrance. His façade-as-forest is one of Hermès USA president and CEO Robert Chavez’s favorite aspects. “Its white metal tubing is a real expression of Miami, with lightness and elegant simplicity,” says Chavez, who’s also fond of the staircase’s smooth, undulating curves. “It seduces you to wander up and gives the store a great architectural feeling.”

With design in its very name, the neighborhood provides the perfect excuse to display the brand’s home collections, as well as to house the only U.S. shop-in-shop for sister brand Saint-Louis crystal on the ground level. Among the latter’s glittering wares are Adrien Rovero’s limited-edition Opercule boxes. Fashion-wise, the roomier space means more watches, jewelry and women’s shoes. Still searching for that elusive Birkin? Shoot straight to the top for handbags. Diehard collectors of signature silk scarves can score an exclusive Flamingo Party motif. “It expresses the vibrancy of the market,” says Chavez, who’s no stranger to local museums and Cuban cuisine. “It’s a very exciting city to blend work with some fun.”

Chilled attendees, including some fresh from Ash Wednesday due diligence, perused bold collections, such as Pois Mois, Princess and Golden Gate. “We were only able to squeeze in 10 percent of some 5,000 pieces,” said Coin.

Minotti, the well-known purveyor of contemporary, handmade Italian furniture, is in high demand in Miami. The architectural design of the space provides an immersive shopping experience.

“Residential developments are growing at a rapid pace in Miami and more people than ever are designing their spaces with contemporary furniture,” said Minotti partner Siamak Hakakian in a release. “With merchandise in such high demand, a dedicated brand showroom in the Miami Design District allows clients to better view and experience the Minotti collection.”

Guests can also enjoy an exclusive “Live Like Frank” promotion for $1,915—commemorating Sinatra’s birth year—which features a two-night stay in a junior suite, a pair of 50-minute massages, a $250 dinner credit for two, complimentary daily breakfast, an “Ultimate Sinatra” CD and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select.

An Interiors Expert Takes Miami https://dujour.com/cities/1-hotel-homes-south-beach-debora-aguiar/ Mon, 19 Jan 2015 19:32:48 +0000 The Editors Of DuJour http://dujour.com/?p=52219 1 Hotels & Homes readies for its big reveal with designer Debora Aguiar in a lead role

The post One Singular Sensation appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
As the globe-trotting Brazilian behind an eponymous architecture and design firm in Sao Paulo, Debora Aguiar understands that modern life can be stressful. So she was elated when hospitality veteran Barry Sternlicht and Richard LeFrak commissioned her to work on interiors at their new brand’s first property, 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach. Slated to open in early 2015, the 425-room oceanfront hotel and 156 full residences serve as an oasis within the action-packed neighborhood. Aguiar’s work suits the space’s use of natural elements and organic materials, as well as the seamless transition between indoor and outdoor settings. So far, units have been purchased by buyers from more than 20 countries. Only 28 prized penthouses remain—mainly because they weren’t released on the market until late this year. Here, Aguiar discusses the project with DuJour.

What are your favorite aspects of this property?

“You’re embraced by a warm, harmonious atmosphere through old washed wood, natural fibers and indirect lighting. You always feel connected to Mother Nature, especially with the amazing views.”

What are the smaller things you did to ensure that connection?

“There’s detail everywhere, from woven textures to river rocks to plants. Everything invites you to touch, to sit, to stay.”

Was the commitment to green design important to you?

“I feel responsible to create green environments, especially since I’m in a position in my career that my actions teach and influence others to practice these initiatives.”

How do you hope it will make an impact?

”We have to show how easy it can be to go green. Unlike most trends that come and go quickly, wellness, nature and coziness are durable, imperishable and profitable. Eco-luxury has staying power.”

Daniella Kronfle: A True Sparkler https://dujour.com/cities/daniella-kronfle-jewelry/ Thu, 09 Oct 2014 13:46:37 +0000 The Editors Of DuJour http://dujour.com/?p=48984 Diamonds are definitely this jewelry designer's best friend

The daughter of a prominent jewelry designer, Daniella Kronfle grew up surrounded by diamonds. The exposure must have worn off as Kronfle has not only founded her own fine jewelry collection—now 10 years old—but serves as an official tiara maker for beauty pageants.

This over-the-top glamour is just one of her many facets. “I’m experimenting with different gold tones and opaque stone combinations, like onyx and tiger’s eye with diamonds and sapphires,” says Kronfle, who also suggests mixing and matching her bangles in rose gold and champagne diamonds. “There are no rules on mixed materials anymore.”

Daniella Kronfle

In fact, there is little that her unconventional jewelry doesn’t complement. Although her Florence training lends itself to Old World techniques, she has fully embraced the 21st century by launching a smartphone app for clients to customize charms for bespoke pieces.

Designer Dee Ocleppo's New Line https://dujour.com/cities/miami/dee-ocleppo-handbag-line/ Wed, 17 Sep 2014 15:57:28 +0000 The Editors Of DuJour http://dujour.com/?post_type=articles&p=47574 Accessories designer Dee Ocleppo is just getting warmed up

Perhaps it was all those years spent living out of a suitcase as a working model, being a busy mother, or jet-setting as part of her more recent role as Mrs. Tommy Hilfiger, but Dee Ocleppo knew she had to build a better bag.

Remembering a cherished, simple design with interchangeable covers from her girlhood, the budding fashion mogul thought she could adapt its versatility for the 21st century. Her prototype premiered on HSN in 2012. She’s since followed it up with a new collection of luxury handbags in exotic materials sourced from the finest mills in Europe.

Dee Ocleppo

“Each bag comes with a reversible cover to achieve three looks,” says Ocleppo. “You are never locked into just one look.”

In addition to enjoying the success she’s found in her career, Ocleppo is also settling into her new oceanfront digs in Golden Beach. (Her husband purchased the iconic Raleigh Hotel, and plans to transform it into a private club.) She’s already a regular at Art Basel, the Bal Harbour Shops and Scarpetta at the Fontainebleau, all places where she can see her bags fitting in perfectly. “Miami attracts such a wide range of people from all over the world, so anywhere on South Beach, you are bound to see interesting people,” says Ocleppo. “It is certainly one of the best places to peoplewatch in the world.”

The Levine Machine https://dujour.com/cities/miami/mayor-philip-levine-miami-beach/ Mon, 15 Sep 2014 15:40:38 +0000 Rebecca Kleinman http://dujour.com/?post_type=articles&p=47463 Dynamic new Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine is walking the walk with an ambitious plan to revitalize his town

The post The Levine Machine appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
On a warm summer day, Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine set out to walk 87 blocks along his town’s famous sand. Taking the place of his regular morning jog, the five-hour feat was a personal thank you to Ocean Rescue lifeguards, whom he greeted in their pastel-painted stands along his way.

“I told them, ‘You’re the front line, the ambassadors to the beach, our greatest asset,’” says Levine.

The thoughtful gesture received hundreds of likes and comments on his Facebook page. Here was a mayor getting out into a community often considered too cool to care. It’s a sign that Miami Beach politics, allegedly mired in corruption and ineptitude for years, have turned around.

“My motto is ‘Just get it done,’” Levine, 52, says from his office, where an entire wall is papered with a photograph of President John F. Kennedy delivering his 1961 inaugural address and emblazoned with that president’s famous quote about what one can do for one’s country. “We hit the ground sprinting and want to accomplish so much,” Levine says of his time so far in office. “They call me the impatient mayor.”

If the Boston native is indeed impatient, it’s a quality that has served him well. In 1989, he founded a media company that catered to the cruise industry. After luxury-goods titan LVMH purchased it, Levine became CEO of Royal Media Partners for Royal Caribbean Cruises. Additionally, he has the ear of both President Obama, as a U.S. tourism adviser, and President Clinton, as a participant in the Clinton Global Initiative. Levine received Clinton’s endorsement during his election race in 2013, which he won with just 50.48 percent of the vote.

“I’m a big proponent of politicians showing solid leadership skills in another field, whether it’s medicine or business, before serving in the public sector,” he says, citing America’s founding fathers as his role models.

So far, Levine’s campaign initiatives are on track. A new water drainage system along Alton Road will mitigate “sunny day” flooding said to be caused by climate change, and plans for Miami Beach Convention Center’s redesign include a seven-acre park, the city’s largest new green space. Instead of becoming another Las Vegas or Orlando, Levine’s Miami aims for quality over quantity and hopes to play host to more events like the tony Art Basel art fair.

Another focus is North Beach, an overlooked section of town that hasn’t yet prospered through gentrification like South Beach. Recent additions are a dog beach that draws residents from all walks of life, a new satellite art fair during Art Basel and an annex for a regional university yet to be selected.

The reinvention of North Beach follows Levine’s overall vision of what the city signifies. While many people come to Miami to let loose, the mayor thinks the city has a higher calling.

“It’s a magical place where people can reinvent themselves,” says Levine, who lauds Miami Beach for its mix of lifestyle, diversity and culture—with tax advantages to boot.

“It’s Manhattan,” he says, “meets Monaco.”

Inside the Iconic Versace Mansion https://dujour.com/cities/miami/versace-mansion-hotel-reopens-kim-kardashian-photos/ Thu, 13 Mar 2014 20:21:33 +0000 Krista Soriano http://redesign.dujour.local/2014/03/versace-mansion-hotel-reopens-kim-kardashian-photos/ Kim Kardashian checked into the opulent 1116 Ocean Drive property, now re-opened after a year's hiatus, to celebrate her newest store. Here's your first look inside

The post Inside the Iconic Versace Mansion appeared first on DuJour.

Before dismissing the photos of Kim Kardashian waving like a royal from the balcony of the Versace mansion yesterday, consider the palatial digs. The socialite is in town for the opening of Dash, the newest boutique by the sisters Kardashian, and is one of the first guests to stay at the extravagant estate-turned-hotel since it opened this month.

After a year’s absence while the mansion was on the market, events guru and restaurateur Barton G. Weiss has returned to the Ocean Drive home where designer Gianni Versace lived and died in 1997. When New York’s Nakash family (owners of Jordache Enterprises) acquired the property, known as Casa Casuarina, for $41.5 million last fall, Weiss and his team were hired back to operate a new restaurant, the Mediterranean-inspired Il Sole, and a boutique hotel, The Villa By Barton G., on the premises.

“We are very happy to be back,” Weiss tells DuJour, “and thrilled to be moving forward with a wonderful partner who also has a great appreciation of the property and its history.” The new Villa By Barton G. is offering up 10 luxurious suites, one of which is the former bedroom of Gianni Versace. “We were very respectful not to re-create,” says Weiss when asked what the design process what like, “but to update and preserve.”

Room rates start at $795, which—all things considered—is a paltry price to pay for a night here. “Any small boutique environment is quite intimate,” as Weiss knows, “but our guests will be treated as though they are in their own private residence, not a hotel at all.”

Meier Does Miami https://dujour.com/cities/miami/meier-miami/ Fri, 06 Dec 2013 17:30:36 +0000 Natasha Wolff http://dujour.com/?post_type=articles&p=38200 Zurich gallery Galerie Gmurzynska celebrates the collages of the Pritzker Prize-winning architect at Art Basel Miami Beach

The post Meier Does Miami appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Amongst the modern and contemporary masterpieces from Yves Klein and Pablo Picasso on view at Swiss Galerie Gmurzynska, the “Richard Meier: 50 Years of Collage” exhibit opened December 4th for a four-day run in Miami.

In addition to presenting selected collages and sculpture, the gallery commissioned Meier to design its booth at the prestigious art fair. DuJour spoke with the architect, now 80, on this occasion about the collages (of which he’s created 4,000 in the last five decades) and more. Often the collages are deeply personal and autobiographical, using everyday collected objects such as theater, tickets, magazine ads and coat checks to intimate photographs taken at his home in East Hampton.

“I had a show at the gallery in Zurich in October and they asked me to take part in this Art Basel project,” Meier says. “They sent me a plan of the space and I suggested a little rearranging.”

About the collages, he explains: “I was painting at the time in the 1960s and it took up a lot of space. This way I could work at a table and it took up less room.” And he never stopped.

“When I was traveling to Los Angeles back and forth 12 twelve years [for the Getty Museum project], I did collages to pass the time on the plane. I brought a box [of clippings] with me.”

“Detachment,” January 14, 2013

The architect also has a new project in the works: the renovation of the Surf Club in Miami’s Surfside, his first in the area. “It’s a residential and a hotel project with a thousand feet of beachfront property,” he says. “It’s a 14-story building and each unit has ocean views. It’s an old building, which was the original Surf Club, which we’re preserving and then building around.”

Something else to look forward to!

When it comes to throwing a Basel bash, United Colors of Benetton believes the early bird gets the worm.

On December 2, before the week’s flood of fairs even began, the brand hosted the interactive soiree With You at its South Beach store.

Stationed at an easel all evening, Trey Speegle drew his paint-by-number flower series as onlookers sipping smoky margaritas also perused his vintage-inspired DIY kits and paint cans, the latter being an homage to Warhol’s everyday objects as art.

Trey Speegle

“People like art that doesn’t feel smarter than they are, as is the case with much of Basel,” he says, who collaborated with Miami-based Art Conductor Dinner Club for colorful bites that mimicked his collages.

ACDC founders and perennial fashion plates Marcella Novela and Tara Sokolow Benmeleh arrived decked out in Benetton, naturally. “She’s head to toe, and I’m head to skirt,” says Sokolow Benmeleh.

Two Decades of Diamonds https://dujour.com/cities/miami/degrisogono-bal-harbour-shop-event-photos/ Wed, 30 Oct 2013 19:31:57 +0000 By Juli Mosoff http://redesign.dujour.local/2013/10/degrisogono-bal-harbour-shop-event-photos/ De Grisogono celebrates 20 years of success with in Miami Beach. See who partied with the luxury jewelry brand, here

As far as standards go, the bar set by luxury jeweler de Grisogono is up there. Known for creating some of the most coveted collections of one-of-a-kind jewelry on the market, de Grisogono’s attention to detail is evident in the construction of each piece. From the finest jewelers and goldsmiths, the designs are meticulously crafted to become not just a styling piece, but also an intimate treasure.

Not surprisingly, de Grisogono places just as much attention into extravagant event planning. The brand kicked off the Miami Beach social season last week by feting the opening of their second U.S. location in the Bal Harbour Shops with a private dinner party for 250 guests, hosted by founder and creative director Fawaz Gruosi’s close friends Ugo and Sara Colombo. Gorgeous pieces from de Grisogono’s 20th Anniversary High Jewellery Collection were displayed in rotating vitrines throughout the courtyard for an exclusive look at the new line, and guests subsequently enjoyed a catered dinner from Casa Tua Restaurant, served poolside at the Colombo’s home. The Goldsingers, flown in directly from France, entertained guests throughout the evening.

The event attracted a slew of Miami Beach A-listers and even provided a bit of mystery at the end, as each guest was handed a de Grisogono key when the dinner drew to a close. One key will unlock a vitrine in the new Bal Harbour boutique, and the enviable winner will receive a hand-selected de Grisogono creation from the newly-opened store.

Click through the gallery to see who showed up to the event, and for a look at pieces from de Grisogono’s newest collection.

Leave it to LeBron James to raise the roof—literally. The NBA two-time champion and four-time MVP introduced his namesake Audemars Piguet watch by driving right through the launch party at Miami’s 1111 Lincoln Road in a Ferrari 458, hood down, to the delight of the 350 guests gathered. James showed off his signature Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph, which for $51,500 comes in an 18K rose gold case and features grey titanium bezel and a crocodile strap, to partygoers including Flo Rida, Tinie Tempah, Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick.

The watches are limited to 600 pieces and ensure that King James will leave a legacy both on and off the court—his signature is imprinted on the back of the watch in blue sapphires, after all. Click through the gallery to see snapshots from the event.

The post The Jetsons Have Arrived appeared first on DuJour.

In South Florida’s never-ending luxury high-rise hustle, the 60-story Porsche Design Tower Miami currently under construction offers something unique: Its auto-lift system will bring residents’ vehicles up to personal garages adjacent to their units. Not only does the amenity put an end to endless elevator trips with groceries, but it also ensures an incredibly high level of privacy. And since nearly every apartment has its own balcony with a pool and a kitchen, living in the Tower is more like living in a single-family home. “By maximizing outdoor space and offering the convenience of one’s own garage, we’ve created the ultimate sky residence,” says Gil Dezer, president of Dezer Development.

The perks continue with a car concierge to handle routine maintenance, an on-site movie theater, game room, and oceanfront ballroom. Slated for completion in early 2016, the Porsche Design Tower consists of 132 units that range from 4,200 to 17,000 square feet and cost from $4.5 million to $25 million.

Tosca (pictured), 210 23rd Street
Maison d’Azur proprietor Stephan Fortier is back on the beach with Tosca. Most of the places on Collins Avenue boast about sourcing the finest ingredients, but Fortier’s meticulous research—reflected in the hefty prices—manages to one-up even the snootiest restaurants. For example, why settle for plain lobster when you can dine on one-in-2-million blue specimens? Kobe ribeye graded A5 with 12 marbling, Pata Negra Jamón aged 36 months and white truffles from Italy’s Alba region also appear in his menu of delicacies.

Copperbox, 3328 North Miami Avenue
The secret supper club has arrived in Miami. Chef Gabriela Machado’s Copperbox uses lavish, intimate dinner parties (there’s a maximum of 24 guests) for her guerrilla gourmet experiments. On Thursdays and Saturdays, Atelier Nights begin with bubbles and hors d’oeuvres, before eight seasonal courses are served. A sommelier pairs wines with each dish (after dinner, corkage is available). It’s no wonder these events, sometimes announced only 72 hours beforehand, have waiting lists.

The Hoxton, 1111 SW 1st Avenue
A Nobu alum’s British-inspired trio has blossomed in Brickell. Diners can start their night with happy hour at the Hoxton, a beach house with live music and classic cocktails with Miami twists, and continue on to rustic fare (think grass-fed butcher steaks and hearty vegan entrées) at BoxPark before spending the night over drinks at lounge Harvey Wolf.

Khong River House1661 Meridian Avenue
The folks behind the perpetually packed Yardbird Southern Table & Bar are hoping to do the same for regional Thai specialties that they did for fried chicken. Khong River House has a team of chefs from tiny Thai towns who have tapped local farmers to grow unusual ingredients like galanga and pandan leaves so they can prepare dishes like those sold in street markets back home. Will Miami diners warm to boat noodles, char-grilled Issan sausage and marinated meats served steaming in banana leaves? All signs point to yes, and the house tropical cocktails—showcasing gin rather than rum—should help convert any nonbelievers. A smart selection of dry rieslings and fun gin concoctions also serve as perfect pairings for the spicy Asian cuisine.

The Cypress Room, 3620 NE 2nd Avenue
Blink and you’ll miss farm-to-table chef Michael Schwartz’s latest, the Cypress Room, tucked near a freeway overpass in the Design District.

Oak Tavern, 35 NE 40th Street
Chef and restaurateur David Bracha has delivered another pearl to patrons of Brickell’s the River Seafood & Oyster Bar. But rather than a menu of mostly seafood, his follow-up, Oak Tavern in the Miami Design District, serves stick-to-your-sides small plates (think gnocchi with rabbit sausage and white truffles, as well as housemade charcuterie and artisanal cheese boards). With a prime location—opt for seats under the majestic oak tree in the charming courtyard—Bracha has added another feather to his toque.

Cipriani Downtown, 465 Brickell Avenue
London’s famed Cipriani completes downtown Miami’s overnight transformation from ugly duckling to swan. Designed by Michele Bönan (the same architect behind Downtown Mayfair in London and Downtown Ibiza, as well as Cipriani Monte Carlo), the blue and white nautical décor suits the glamorous bayside setting. It’s the first Miami venture for Maggio and Ignazio Cipriani, whose great-grandfather founded Harry’s Bar in Venice—hence, their bar’s familiar layout—and whose grandfather and father are also veteran restaurateurs. Considering their mentors have hosted Queen Elizabeth II, as well as Hollywood royalty, there’s no telling what boldface names will visit this two-story hot spot.

Entering the nightlife scene…

Jelsomino, 247 23rd Street
Finding a decent karaoke venue in South Beach is tough. But that’s changing a bit thanks to Jelsomino, an upscale spin-off of an NYC club. Book private rooms or take the main stage with backup singers and fog machines. And while waiting your turn to belt out the Verve, sip the Bitter Sweet Symphony cocktail, a Moscow mule/mojito mashup.

Hyde American Airlines Arena, 601 Biscayne Boulevard
Hot on the heels of opening a location at the SLS Hotel, Los Angeles import Hyde lounge makes it a double with this outpost at AmericanAirlines Arena. But the venues couldn’t be more different. While the design of the beach’s Hyde borrows from midcentury Florida, the across-the-bay spot took design inspiration from butterfly cocoons.

Wynwood Brewing Company, 565 NW 24th Street
Mojito-mad Miamians are warming up to good old American beer. Case in point: Wynwood Brewing Company, which has opened a facility with tasting and tap rooms in the arts district. “It’s the perfect location, since our beers are like works of art,” founder Luis Brignoni says. Two standout brews: a blonde ale and a double IPA with notes of mango and guava.

Eberjey1905 Purdy Avenue
For the décor of its second Miami boutique, the favorite hometown lingerie line opted for a blend of beach and industrial chic. Metal chairs, cloth mannequins and whitewashed wood floors provide a stark backdrop for lacy underpinnings and pajama sets in Liberty London prints. Also available are stylish swimsuits and cover-ups.

PB Steak, 1787 Purdy Avenue
Neighborhood pioneer Pubbelly multiplies yet again. PB Steak, the restaurant group’s fifth culinary concept, tackles regionally sourced surf and turf in a dining room of reclaimed wood walls, black tufted-leather banquettes and a communal table. Along with the small plates, like blue-crab bread pudding, there is an extensive raw bar.

Jugofresh, 1935 West Avenue
Proving Miami isn’t all about partying and overindulgence, Jugofresh churns out cold-pressed juices, superfood smoothies and raw, vegan fare. For new breakfast on-the-go ideas, try its raw oatmeal with cashew “mylk,” agave, vanilla and grey sea salt or its take on the açai bowl with Brazil nuts, seasonal fruit, mint and raw honey.

Flybarre, 1919 Purdy Avenue
Flywheel‘s cycling classes reinvented cardio; upstairs studio FlyBarre is now reinvigorating body sculpting. Instructors inject excitement into the interval-based class—a mix of circuit training, yoga, Pilates, stretching and strength building—with their custom playlists. Ballet barres in two heights mean tall and petite friends can work out together.

Panther Coffee, 1875 Purdy Avenue
The young couple who jumpstarted Miami’s cafe culture with Wynwood’s Panther Coffee have opened a second, larger location across the bay. Caffeine addicts can still get limited-edition roasted beans, as well as pastries like pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread). Stop by on Saturdays for complimentary cuppings, or tastings.

Miami is a city synonymous with nightlife. And dining. And cocktails. So, when former VIP door manager Cedric Adegnika teamed up with Barbara Zuccarelli to open a brand-new lounge, it had to be something different.

Enter the idea for a “before” club. Open all night long (hours are 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.), The Flat calls itself the destination to check out before eating dinner, going to a club, or even for a nightcap. With over 40 cocktails created by mixologist Egor Polonskiy and forward-thinking food by the venue’s executive chef Giuseppe “Beppe” Galazzi, they’ll have a hard time getting anyone to leave, even in the early hours of the morning.

The Flat is located at 500 S Pointe Dr., Miami Beach, Florida; (305) 531-3528

Tory Burch
9700 Collins Avenue

At Tory Burch’s new Bal Harbour Shops boutique, the concept is beach. Amid a soft, island-inspired color palette, special touches like hand-stenciled painted tables complement sea-foam concrete floors, coral-print walls, pale pink sofas and denim-blue drapes. “We always consider location when designing our stores,” Burch says, “but it still feels like our aesthetic.” That means you’ll still find her signature orange lacquer doors. Here, the designer’s favorite places to be and to be seen in Miami.

The Raleigh
“Nothing beats the pool here, with its scented towels and grove of towering palm trees.”

New World Symphony
“The Frank Gehry–designed space is worth a visit. It looks and sounds amazing.”

Casa Tua
“Its outdoor patio is the perfect place for dinner. Order one of their fresh seafood pastas.”

C. Madeleine’s
“This eclectic vintage clothing store has everything from Edwardian blouses to motorcycle boots.”
