Swedish candy brand BonBon has opened a new retail warehouse in Red Hook Brooklyn that’s open to the public on weekends only. Since 2017, the candy purveyor has become a social media sensation appearing in many of the 120 million TikTok videos celebrating the Swedish candy craze. The new store, now open in time for holiday shopping, is located inside its bustling warehouse and headquarters where orders are processed during the week and a beautiful retail store is open to the public on weekends. BonBon’s candy is imported from Sweden and the Red Hook store has hundreds of varieties of specialty Scandinavian pick-and-mix gummies, chocolates, licorice, packaged goods and more. On Sundays during store hours, BonBon also offers Swedish-style hot dogs until supplies run out. “Since opening the doors of our first BonBon candy store on the Lower East Side in 2018, it has been a cherished responsibility to offer an exceptional selection of authentic imported pick-and-mix confections and we’re proud to have a fourth location in the New York metro area,” says BonBon’s three founders Selim Adira, Robert Persson and Leonard Schaltz. BonBon also offers its own original candy collection, including a line of sour fish candy and salty licorice twists, available alongside hundreds of imported pick-and-mix candies at BonBon’s four stores in the New York City metro area (Lower East Side, Upper East Side, Williamsburg Brooklyn, Red Hook Brooklyn).

Chef Daniel Boulud has opened his first steakhouse, La Tête d’Or by Daniel, at 318 Park Avenue South in Flatiron at the new office office tower One Madison Avenue. Designed by David Rockwell and Rockwell Group, the space is grand yet inviting, with plush velvet banquettes and softly padded walls offsetting the soaring ceilings. Deep blue tones and dark wood add to the feeling of warmth in the 120-seat main dining room, bar, lounge and private dining rooms. Chef Boulud (Daniel, Café Boulud, Le Pavillon) is exploring classic New York steakhouse cuisine and enhancing it with a touch of French flair at the restaurant. “My cuisine is always rooted in tradition, with the use of the finest seasonal ingredients, and a steakhouse is the ideal showcase for these elements,” says Boulud. “It is quite a simple, universal pleasure, an excellent steak and a great sauce, but it needs to be executed with precision, and it needs to have soul. It is a joy to work at the wood-fire grill, with the highest quality meats and produce my own version of the steakhouse classics.” The menu features beef steaks, seafood plateaus, veal and lamb chops and a whole grilled lobster. Tuna tartare and crab cakes are served alongside tableside preparations of Caesar salad and a prime rib trolley where Scharbauer Ranch American Wagyu Ribeye is sliced to order. La Tête d’Or has opened in partnership with frequent partner SL Green, the developer of One Madison and One Vanderbilt with whom chef Boulud and his Dinex Group have had great success. “We are all great believers in the power of an exceptional restaurant, in the most spectacular locations, in this wonderful city,” says Dinex Group CEO Sebastien Silvestri. “New Yorkers have always loved a world-class steakhouse, and we are certainly aiming to bring them one to take note of.”

During his 20 years in Las Vegas, nightlife pioneer Sean Christie was involved in game-changing venues from Jet and Light to Blush and Encore Beach Club. At the 55,000-square-foot Encore Beach Club, Christie was at the forefront of the Vegas day-club boom, as well as the rise of the mega-club. He also helped jump-start the city’s electronic dance music scene by bringing in DJs like Calvin Harris, Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Deadmau5, Tiësto and Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. And, recently, the former president of events and nightlife at MGM Resorts International and executive vice president of business development for Wynn Resorts has founded Carver Road Hospitality, alongside marketing executive Nelson Famadas. In December 2021, the company debuted in Las Vegas with Carversteak at Resorts World Las Vegas. Then, moving east, the team debuted Rosevale Kitchen + Cocktail Room and Starchild Rooftop Bar & Lounge at the Civilian hotel in New York City.

Rosevale Kitchen serves elevated American fare in a brasserie setting and features a curved, ribbed leather ceiling and mirror panels accented by red leather banquettes and brass accents. Divided into two dining areas, the bright front room houses dining area and a bar while the back room is more subdued, and leads to the Secret Garden, where a custom ceiling installation, designed by floral and event designer Preston Bailey, emphasizes the secluded romantic garden setting. Rosevale Cocktail Room, guided by Francesco Lafranconi, breathes innovative life into mixology. Paying homage to its proximity to Broadway, the room is adorned in Broadway ephemera from blockbusters past and present. Its outdoor terrace provides a tranquil respite from the bustling city. Operational year-round, Starchild boasts two outdoor patios and a retractable rooftop that can quickly transform to become a fully open-air space with panoramic views of the New York skyline and Hudson River. Shaped with the help of Stevie Guttman, the venue offers cocktails and light bites and, on weekends, DJs spin house, funk, soul and disco. Celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Neil Patrick Harris, Rami Malek, Alexandra Daddario and Hailee Steinfeld have all visited the hotel’s venues. “The partnership with Civilian was born from Jason Pomeranc and I recognizing the need for more aspirational food and beverage concepts in the neighborhood,” says Christie. “With Rosevale Kitchen + Cocktail Room and Starchild, we can program and curate experiences from cocktail hour through dinner and then late night.”

The post Chanel Opens A Fine Jewelry Boutique On Fifth Avenue appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Chanel has opened a two-story boutique dedicated to the brand’s watches and fine jewelry at 730 Fifth Avenue. This golden jewel box on Fifth Avenue was designed by the brand’s frequent collaborator architect Peter Marino. Framed by the Beaux-Arts gilded architecture of the historic Crown Building, built in 1921, the storefront is adorned with honed and grooved black granite and intricately cast gold bronze screens positioned behind an iron and glass façade. The interiors reflect a delicate yet striking palette of gold and black, enhanced by touches of rock crystal and an exceptional collection of contemporary and fine art (Louise Nevelson, Anna-Eva Bergman and Vik Muniz to name a few), antiques and custom furniture and lighting. The boutique’s bold entryway sets an elegant tone, with black and gold lacquer paneling and antique wooden lotus bouquets from Japan’s Edo Period. Two dedicated fine jewelry salons on the main floor feature double-height ceilings with ornate touches such as hand-applied coromandel-style wall finishes, reminiscent of the coromandel screens in Mademoiselle Chanel’s apartment, an elaborately carved 18-inch-high gilt Regency-era mirror and a contemporary ebonized wood writing desk. A dramatic staircase leading to the mezzanine floor (which holds two more fine jewelry salons) features custom balustrades crafted from 24-karat gold framed plates of rock crystal by Goossens. In addition to the brand’s signature J12 watches and Coco Crush fine jewelry offerings, the brand will debut exclusive high jewelry creations “Eternal N°5” composed of an exceptional transformable diamond necklace and earrings that recall the shape of the Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle stopper.

Rising 47 stories into the New York skyline, the Park Lane New York is an iconic example of Emery Roth & Sons’ trademark post-war architecture style. Design firm Yabu Pushelberg has created the hotel’s interiors while mindfully restoring the existing architectural details of the historic Central Park South building. The 47-story property, managed by Highgate, features 611 rooms–nearly half boasting sweeping park views–and 11,000 square feet of reimagined indoor and outdoor event space. Nightlife and hospitality maestro Scott Sartiano has conceptualized three new food and beverage venues throughout the hotel including an 80-seat lobby bar with an outdoor terrace (Rose Lane), an intimate restaurant on the hotel’s second floor (Park Lane Café) and a rooftop lounge and cocktail bar on the 47th floor offering sweeping panoramic views (Darling).

The Darling bar at the Park Lane

DuJour spoke with the property’s managing director and VP of operations Niles Harris to discover what makes it so special.

What’s the most requested room at the property?

The Belvedere Suite.

What makes it so special?

Located on the 45th floor, the two-bedroom penthouse, which spans a total of 1,750 square feet, was recently refreshed as part of the hotel’s $80 million renovation and has been transformed into a unique, fun and inclusive retreat. With breathtaking views of Central Park in its entirety, the suite boasts plush king beds dressed in Bellino Fine Linens, a designer bathroom with walk-in shower, a walk-in closet and sitting area, and a media room with 75″ LED TVs with theater style seating for up to 15 guests.

What is the nightly rate for this room?

From $25,000

What’s your favorite design element on property?

The murals in the guest rooms and common spaces, which are designed by local artist studio En Viu, are one of my favoritesthey’re playful, colorful and all inspired by Central Park. There are also a number of original fixtures around the property, such as the chandeliers and glowing wall lamps, that bring a thoughtful historic touch. And, of course, the way in which the design truly encapsulates the spirit of the citythe park facing windows take on a vast view that brings a sense of openness right into our guests’ rooms.

A City View King room at the Park Lane

A City View King room at the Park Lane

What’s your personal favorite room? Why?

My favorite room is the Meadow Suite. There are only two of them in the hotel and they are located on our top guest floor, 46 stories above Central Park. There’s something special about these rooms. The decor is warm and the suite is spacious, with a very comfortable large living room adjacent to the bedroom. If you take a moment on the couch and look out at the view on Central Park, you might just believe it’s your apartment on Central Park South.

What special perk or amenity do you offer that no one knows about?

Park Lane New York is renowned for its exclusive Caviar Hotline service, however the bespoke offering still feels like the hotel’s best kept secret. The 24/7 service gives guests on-demand access to the finest caviar, simply by dialing 5. Guests can indulge in a specialty menu of small and large tins of Petrossian Royal Ossetra caviar, as well as smoked salmon blinis with caviar and crème fraiche, caviar nachos and deviled eggs topped with caviar.

How about one more fun fact about the property?

It’s a little-known fact that there are two distinct design themes throughout the property’s rooms based on the view. Central Park facing rooms and City View rooms each have their own color palette and aesthetic. Blues and greens were implemented to blend in with the cool tones of the cityscape, while pinks and warm creams are used to compliment the park foliage.

Chef Daniel Boulud has reopened the doors to his Upper East Side institution, Café Boulud, on 63rd Street and Park Avenue in partnership with the hospitality division of Barnes International Realty. The Café Boulud brand holds significant meaning to Chef Boulud as it is named after the original Café Boulud which his grandparents opened over 100 years ago outside of Lyon, France. Chef Boulud opened Café Boulud in New York City in 1998 and has since expanded the brand to locations in Palm Beach, the Bahamas and Toronto, with a new Beverly Hills location expected to open next year. “Creating a new home for Café Boulud has been my focus and priority for the last year,” says Boulud. “Given the special place it holds in my heart, I feel very fortunate to be able to bring it back to the Upper East Side. The restaurant is a vibrant celebration of my French roots and love for New York from our inspired cuisine and warm hospitality to a beautifully designed space and lively atmosphere.” The Chef’s Dinex Group also operates Restaurant Daniel, Le Pavillon, Centurion NY (in partnership with American Express) and the Blue Box Café at the Tiffany Landmark in New York City.

Under the helm of executive chef Romain Paumier, menu highlights include ris de veau “Du Barry” (a glazed sweetbread with ginger jus, cauliflower, toasted oats and purslane), grilled salmon with citrus, cilantro, crudités and spicy avocado dressing and a roasted Pennsylvania duck with persimmon jam, endive and monk peppercorn duck jus. “We are thrilled to bring back such an iconic restaurant, and it is very fitting that 25 years after it first opened, Café Boulud is more relevant than ever as part of the New York dining scene,” says Dinex CEO Sebastien Silvestri. The bright and airy space is designed by Jeffrey Beers International featuring art deco and vintage accents, black and white tile, wood floors and vaulted ceilings with decorative, clover-shaped molding. Mirrored panels, velvet green banquets, sculpted bronze, gilded copper and polished stone add additional accents throughout.

Diptyque Paris has opened a new flagship on Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. “With this transformation, we bring Diptyque’s brand journey to life, and confirm our commitment to providing exceptional client experiences,” says the brand’s CEO Fabienne Mauny. “We’ve enhanced the beauty of this emblematic address with stunning architectural and artistic details, inspired by the iconic landmarks of New York City. As our largest store in the United States, it stands as a testament to our dedication to taking the brand to new heights.” The newly-designed Diptyque Paris boutique boasts archways, stained glass windows, concrete, wood and glass, straight lines, circles and color palette of white, green, orange and brown. The brick façade with restored mosaic decorations gives way to interiors that resemble a light and airy apartment organized around two distinct spaces. Toward the front of the boutique is an open two-story space featuring a sculpture-like chandelier of glass globes is suspended over a table by Kelly Wearstler. The fragrance and candle collection are showcased on tables while a double-height bookcase highlights a selection of accessories and scented objects. A wood-paneled salon with a large dining table and fireplace is dedicated to the home and decoration collections while a bath salon (dedicated to the Art du Soin collection) is centered around a mirror surrounded by veneered furnishings with decorative elements.

Room Request! The Standard, East Village https://dujour.com/cities/new-york/room-request-the-standard-east-village/ Tue, 29 Aug 2023 20:00:53 +0000 Rebecca Armstrong https://dujour.com/?p=130064 In the heart of New York City's East Village, lies a super chic boutique hotel with lots of amenities

The post Room Request! The Standard, East Village appeared first on DuJour.

The Standard, East Village has recently debuted its renovated guest rooms featuring colorful details, retro furniture and Bauhaus shapes. The downtown New York City boutique hotel maintains its artsy aesthetic but with vibrant features like playful skateboard wall installations in its suites and floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of the city. The 21-story hotel tower features a jewel box space, The Garden, (a quiet and calm oasis), bustling street-side, all day bistro, Café Standard, and buzzy No Bar bar. The property is playful while at the same time boasts modern amenities and in-room must haves like fast, free WiFi, 400-thread-count sheets, plush towels and Davines bathroom amenities. It also offers several private dining and event and meeting spaces.

Café Standard at the Standard East Village

Café Standard at The Standard, East Village

DuJour spoke with Neil Bierwagen, the property’s general manager, to learn more about this destination.

What’s the most requested room at the property?

Our One-Bedroom Suites on the 11th and 14th floors. Little known fact: they were designed after an acclaimed musician requested to combine two of our deluxe rooms while on tour.

What makes it so special?

The suite offers a separate living room and bedroom with sweeping views of downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as two bathrooms with heated floors and the option of a soaking tub or a shower. Instead of traditional art, you’ll find skateboards on the wall custom-designed with abstract prints. They’re a fun nod to the art and skate scenes of the neighboring Lower East Side.

What is the nightly rate for this room?

From $800

What’s an interesting tidbit about the hotel that speaks to its status as an icon?

The hotel lobby is housed within a townhouse that had past lives as an 1800s tenement building and a 1960s hub for local artists. The building still features original design elements, like the stained glass windows above the entrance, and there is even a writer from the artist hub who still lives on one of the upper floors!

A guest room at the Standard East Village

A guest room at The Standard, East Village

What’s your personal favorite room and why?

I’m partial to room 1710, one of our Standard Queens. My favorite way to spend a night there is by ordering room service and watching the sun set over the NYC skyline. This is also one of the select rooms in the hotel that has a secret red light setting—tap the button above your bed to activate.

What special perk or amenity do you offer that no one knows about?

We keep cruisers on hand for complimentary rentals. There’s no better way to tour downtown than on two wheels, and our topiary-filled Garden is the perfect place to relax after a long bike ride around the city.

What’s your favorite design element on property?

Art is a mainstay both at the property and in the neighborhood as a whole. Our team regularly collaborates with local artists—we’re currently displaying “Beyond the Horizon of Time,” a stunning mural by Brooklyn-based creator Rahm Bowen. Our guests can also tap into the art scene at our monthly happenings, from candlelit creative sessions (from sketching to collaging) to Standard Talks, a series where we invite the most exciting minds across fashion, visual arts and more for conversational panels.

What is another fun fact about the property?

Our ground-floor all-day eatery, Café Standard, is home to the world’s only in-hotel mushroom farm. We partner with urban farming brand Smallhold to harvest the mushrooms from a temperature-controlled tank behind the bar, and our kitchen team prepares them across all of our menus. The mushroom terrine is a must-try!

DuJour spoke to Rodriguez about this massive culinary undertaking to find out how it all came together.

You partnered with Jeff Katz, with whom you worked at Del Posto for years. Why was this a good partnership for you?

Jeff and I worked together at Del Posto for almost a decade, and we were running it side by side for about three years before the restaurant shuttered. Jeff and I both have an emotional connection to this place—Jeff met his wife here—and we felt like we hadn’t had the opportunity to see it through.

Jeff and I chose to take over the space at 85 Tenth Avenue because we know all of its nooks and crannies and intricacies. We already knew how we wanted to use the space and how to optimize it because we’d lived it for decades cumulatively.

Culurgiones at Al Coro

Culurgiones at Al Coro

What made you decide to break it up into three venues: Mel’s, Al Coro and Discolo?

When Jeff and I were negotiating with our landlord, we found out that the restaurant space next door was still vacant. We realized pretty quickly that we could combine the two kitchens and build a sort of ecosystem. Al Coro is the big night, celebratory restaurant that Jeff and I have dreamt about; Mel’s is the simple hangout that we knew the neighborhood needed from our late nights in Chelsea; and Discolo is the grown-up dancing destination (where you just might find some late-night pizza).

What’s your culinary inspiration behind each one?

At Al Coro, we cook using Italian flavors, but we’re not dogmatic about preparations. That is to say, we take some liberties. In a fit of insanity or brilliance, I decided to change the menu at Al Coro every six weeks. I decided to change the menu more frequently not only to inspire guests to return more regularly, but even more so to give the kitchen team an opportunity to change their routine, to flex their muscles and learn a new set of skills.

The dining room at Al Coro

The dining room at Al Coro

What was your approach to the design?

Designing Al Coro was sort of like renovating the house that you grew up in for your kids. You want to maintain the heart and soul of the place, update the broken appliances for the next generation, and replace your grandma’s tchotchkes and the goddamn moldings that you hated while you were growing up.

Pizza and salads at Mel's

Pizza and salads at Mel’s

What’s unique about the pizza you’re making at Mel’s?

Our objective when we were testing doughs for the Mel’s pie was to create a hybrid of Neapolitan and New York pizza. We wanted a Frankenstein with a pillowy crust that’s still sturdy enough to eat by the slice in your hand. I haven’t worked in a casual restaurant since I was in high school, so Mel’s was a treat. It’s the sort of simple food cooked over a wood fire that I would eat any night of the week.

Well By Messer Opens in New York City https://dujour.com/cities/new-york/well-by-messer-opens-in-new-york-city/ Wed, 07 Sep 2022 20:40:13 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=125934 Endocrinologist Dr. Caroline Messer opens a new holistic health clinic in Midtown Manhattan

The post Well By Messer Opens in New York City appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
The new Well by Messer clinic in Midtown Manhattan offers a holistic, mind-body approach to weight loss, wellness and health founded by endocrinologist Dr. Caroline Messer. “The idea of Well by Messer grew organically from a sense that I was unable to offer a full mind-body approach to weight loss at my pre-existing practice,” says Dr. Messer, who is also a clinical assistant professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. “I felt frustrated that I was providing treatments for metabolic disorders without the proper tools to address emotional eating and without the expertise to create comprehensive dietary and exercise plans. My patients were universally looking for these services, but given our frenetic lifestyles in New York, they could not always follow through on my recommendations to see these additional specialists. Covid amplified this issue, as the number of patients seeing me for weight loss skyrocketed during the pandemic.”

Dr. Caroline Messer

Dr. Caroline Messer

At the new space, Dr. Messer has a full team of endocrinologists, psychologists, registered dietitians and personal trainers who coordinate care for each patient. “At my own practice, I can only treat the endocrine aspects of metabolic issues,” Dr. Messer explains. “Having the entire team under one roof, having weekly meetings about each patient and bouncing ideas off each other in real time is much more convenient for patients and more efficient for practitioners.” The comfortable, modern, spa-like space is warm and welcoming—not at all clinical like a doctor’s office. The practice treats a wide variety of conditions, from diabetes, osteoporosis, weight gain and metabolic syndrome to thyroid, adrenal and pituitary disorders and infertility. One trend that Dr. Messer is seeing is that patients are curious about new weight management drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro. “These medications are naturally occurring gut hormones that send a satiety signal to the brain and slow down the passage of food,” says Dr. Messer. “These drugs lead to unprecedented amounts of weight loss with minimal side effects. Additionally, there are very few patients who do not qualify for these medications, since they likely reduce cardiovascular risk and improve metabolic markers.”

The Ned NoMad Arrives in New York City https://dujour.com/cities/new-york/the-ned-nomad-new-york-city/ Wed, 31 Aug 2022 17:00:00 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=125827 We spoke with Richie Akiva (1 Oak), creative director and curator of The Ned NoMad, about Membership Collective Group’s exciting new venture

The post The Ned NoMad Arrives in New York City appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
The Membership Collective Group (Soho House, The Line) has opened a branch of its popular London hotel and membership club, The Ned, in NoMad. Located in the former NoMad Hotel. The 117,000-square-foot building includes members-only Ned’s Club (spaces include a dining room, rooftop bar and terrace restaurant), 167 guest rooms and public-facing Cecconi’s restaurant and The Little Ned bar. The 1903 building’s Beaux-Arts style is enhanced by interiors from the Soho House Design team. Membership Collective Group CEO Nick Jones and executive chairman Ron Burkle tapped Richie Akiva (1 Oak) as the Ned NoMad’s creative director and curator. “It was a no brainer for me,” says Akiva. “It lets me focus on the elements I love and not having to do the executive office day-to-day operations is ideal. I am able to properly give attention to the key components to make this membership club incredible, with key programming, hand-selected entertainment, the right people and the right ambiance.”

Having such a large building in the heart of New York City enables the team to offer so much under one roof. “What’s special is that you can have dinner and drinks on the rooftop or main level lounge, hold a meeting in the library room, enjoy live music in the atrium and dance at our intimate nightclub,” says Akiva. “It is all encompassing. The ambiance just makes you feel comfortable and is extremely inviting. It is a space you do not want to leave.”

Soho House’s head of collections Kate Bryan has curated the Ned NoMad’s vast contemporary art collection inspired by the idea of what representation means featuring the work of Laurie Simmons, Issy Wood and Joseph Kosuth. “The city has been on our wish list for some time and it’s encouraging to see the demand for membership spaces where like-minded professionals feel they can flourish both socially and professionally,” says Jones.

Nobody guessed that a solo show from comedian and writer Alex Edelman would become a hit, but that’s what happened with Just for Us, which is now running through late July at the Greenwich House Theater. Originally, the piece, about a strange and uncomfortable excursion Edelman took one night to a meeting of white nationalists in Queens, “was meant to be just a sweet and small six-week thing.” Trust us, if you’re a New Yorker (or you’ve ever been a New Yorker), you’ll laugh—a lot. (Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld, Ben Stiller, Billy Crystal and Sarah Jessica Parker have all seen the show) “I like jokes and shows that are a little more ‘high-risk’ than the average standup thing,” Edelman says.

Fasano Restaurant Arrives In Manhattan https://dujour.com/cities/fasano-new-york-restaurant/ Fri, 25 Mar 2022 16:24:30 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=123553 The Brazilian hospitality group's first culinary venture in New York City has diners rushing back to Midtown

The post Fasano Restaurant Arrives In Manhattan appeared first on DuJour.

Fasano Restaurant, the first U.S. restaurant from the group helmed by Italian-born and Brazilian-raised restaurateur Gero Fasano, has opened in Midtown. “It’s our first restaurant in New York, which has been a dream of mine, and I wanted to ensure it was the best expression of the Fasano brand,” says Fasano. “There is an energy in New York that is returning, and people are looking for comforting dishes and warm, generous service after the last few years we’ve had.” Designed by Brazilian architect, Isay Weinfeld, the Italian restaurant in the space formerly occupied by the Four Seasons Restaurant, showcases three sprawling dining spaces (a relaxed osteria and bar lounge, an elegant main dining room and an intimate second floor private dining room). “We couldn’t have asked for a better location,” says Fasano. “The quality and workmanship from the former tenants was a fantastic foundation to work from. Many changes had to be made to align with the Fasano aesthetic, but the bones of the space, the amount of square footage, and being in the heart of Midtown, just can’t be beat.” True to the Fasano family’s history of authentic Italian cuisine, chef Nicola Fedeli serves an elegant menu of Italian classics (signature dishes include veal Milanese and risottos–“you can’t find a veal Milanese like this anywhere else!”) complemented by a robust global wine list. “Fasano New York feels like I’m opening my first restaurant again. Something about opening here, at this moment in time, feels very fresh and exciting.”

The post The Blahnik Bar Opens In New York City appeared first on DuJour.

With a career spanning 50 years, Spanish-born Manolo Blahnik is one of the world’s most influential footwear designers. “Shoes help transform a woman,” he says. The designer’s welcoming new New York City flagship that honors his creations and takes the brand forward. “New York has always evoked a great sense of excitement for me, a city of endless possibilities,” says Manolo Blahnik. “So, it is an honor for me to open on Madison Avenue, an exquisite location, which I remember fondly from our formative years.” This month, the brand debuts a zero-alcohol bar concept in the men’s wing of the flagship. The free-standing, fully functional bar sits in a library of fixtures in peacock-blue lacquer with a gleaming brass countertop and cherry-red velvet barstools. “We worked with award-winning interior designer and friend of the brand David Thomas, whom we had previously worked with for our Paris boutique,” says Kristina Blahnik, the founder’s niece and the company’s CEO. David has a fantastic understanding of Manolo’s vision and cultural collages as well as the house values. Our boutiques all have a one-of-a-kind aesthetic that reference the location and Manolo’s whimsical style. The New York boutique also takes on this approach and embodies Hollywood Regency, a theme that evokes grandeur and opulence but still has a sense of warmth and intimacy.”

The Blahnik Bar continues a tradition from Manolo Blahnik’s original Old Church Street shop in Chelsea, London, which became a showcase for the designer’s creativity and conviviality at the same time–a vibrant social salon for a variety of London socialites. Frequent visitors included David Bailey, Mick and Bianca Jagger, David Hockney, Princess Diana and Amanda Harlech. “My shops have always been social spaces,” says Manolo Blahnik. “Interesting and inspiring people coming together and enjoying one another’s company, I adore that! I’m thrilled that we can continue the Manolo Blahnik tradition of welcoming our wonderful friends to spend time with us and each other at the Blahnik Bar. Our shops are and always will be so much more than a place to buy shoes, it’s all about the people!” Blahnik’s sweet tooth inspired much of the menu at the New York City flagship bar including a Blahnik Bellini, Dapper Daiquiri and Seven One Seven Spritz. Surely you know Cyrano de Bergerac. You’ve probably seen it played out dozens of times. Maybe on stage, maybe in the movies, maybe even in your own unrequited love life. With Peter Dinklage in Cyrano earlier this year. Or Steve Martin in Roxanne. Or Janeane Garofolo in The Truth About Cats & Dogs.

But we suggest you give Cyrano another shot, because you likely won’t see a Cyrano as electric as James McAvoy’s. This production of Cyrano de Bergerac, starring the Scottish actor and directed by Jamie Lloyd from a new translation by Martin Crimp, takes its cues from the world of slam and spoken word poetry. It’s fresh, it’s original. Expect lots of goosebumps at the American premiere, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for only six weeks beginning April 5. Get your tickets now.

Crown Club at Barclays Center is a new lounge and restaurant for Brooklyn Nets premium ticket holders. The latest opening is a collaboration between BSE Global and Major Food Group and boasts interior design by renowned designer Ken Fulk. “With New York City roaring back to life and the Nets poised to be more thrilling than ever, Crown Club is perfectly paired to celebrate this exciting time,” says Major Food co-owner Jeff Zalaznick. “It’s been an honor to make this dream a reality with the brilliant Ken Fulk and our visionary partners BSE Global—and we are excited to be a part of this winning combination.” The new courtside 7,700-square-foot space boasts a lounge, dining room, private dining room and pantry (offering up a vast selection of free snacks) festooned in green-and-gold velvet upholstered furniture, antique mirrors, elegant parquet floors and Venetian Fortuny light fixtures. “I avoided the usual sports-lounge look,” said Fulk. “Without qualification, this is going to be one of the most beautiful spaces in the city. The fact that it’s inside an arena adds to the mysterious sense of being invited to a private grand residence for an unforgettable evening.” The dining room serves Carbone favorites such as spicy rigatoni vodka, meatballs and Caesar salad.

Restaurant Daniel Reopens With a New Look and a New Menu https://dujour.com/cities/restaurant-daniel-reopens-with-a-new-look-and-a-new-menu/ Wed, 29 Sep 2021 17:30:44 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=121868 Chef Daniel Boulud debuts new dishes and updated décor at his flagship New York City restaurant

The post Restaurant Daniel Reopens With a New Look and a New Menu appeared first on DuJour.

Restaurant Daniel, the crown jewel of Chef Daniel Boulud’s restaurant empire, has reopened with new menu items, reimagined interiors, an Art Deco-inspired bar designed by Lalique along with a new rotating art installation. The Michelin-starred Chef Boulud has also promoted Chef Eddy Leroux, previously the restaurant’s chef de cuisine for more than 17 years to executive chef, and Shaun Velez, formerly executive pastry chef at Café Boulud, to executive pastry chef.

“Throughout the 28 years of Restaurant Daniel, it has always been an honor to work alongside the most talented, passionate and creative executive chefs in the kitchen, as well as in pastry,” says Boulud. “Today, our newly appointed executive chefs, Eddy Leroux and Shaun Velez, are joining their talents to ensure that Restaurant Daniel’s strong commitment to hospitality and culinary excellence stay creative, relevant, exciting and delicious as it concludes its third decade in the New York City dining scene.”

After a challenging year for restaurants around the world, seeing fine dining mecca Restaurant Daniel return with a flourish is indeed promising. “We are eager to present a fresh, delectable experience in our artistic setting and warm ambiance. Our New York finest hospitality is back, and so is Daniel,” says Boulud. The 3,000-square-foot dining room has been reimagined by its original interior designer, Tihany Design. A stunning polished stainless steel arched entrance, reimagined lounge area and a new crystal-accented bar area designed in partnership with French design house Lalique are all on display at the Upper East Side restaurant. In the main dining room, modern updates like undulating wood screens, custom-designed carpets, furniture and lighting make the vibe more contemporary. As part of the interior renovation, Chef Boulud has created a dedicated series of biannual exhibitions to be on display in the historic neoclassical dining room, the intimate Upper Lounge and the private Bellecour Room.

Curated in conjunction with art advisor Janis Gardner Cecil, large-scale landscape paintings by artist Alex Katz and a selection of works by Robert Mapplethorpe are showcased. “We are all excited to reintroduce such a majestic and storied restaurant,” says Sebastien Silvestri, CEO of Boulud’s Dinex Group. “We have made a significant investment to elevate every inch of the interiors. The culinary team has gone to great lengths to refine the menu, ultimately creating a restaurant that is modern, relevant, inviting and unique. The all-new Restaurant Daniel is a perfect example of how we’re meeting the moment, and pushing our teams to be creative and set new standards for ourselves and fine dining in New York City.”

Manolo Blahnik Takes Madison https://dujour.com/cities/manolo-blahnik-50th-anniversary-interview/ Mon, 13 Sep 2021 17:00:49 +0000 Editors of DuJour https://dujour.com/?p=121324 Just in time for its 50th anniversary, the luxury shoemaker returns to New York City with a new uptown flagship

The post Manolo Blahnik Takes Madison appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
With a career spanning 50 years, Spanish-born Manolo Blahnik is one of the world’s most influential footwear designers. “Shoes help transform a woman,” he says. His designs and sketches have appeared in museum exhibitions and numerous books (the latest being 2017’s The Art of Shoes). He collaborated with director Sofia Coppola on the costumes for her 2006 film Marie Antoinette (the film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design). He’s also an Honorary CBE and has won awards like the Footwear News Lifetime Achievement Award and the British Fashion Council Outstanding Achievement Award. So, it was time for the designer to have a rich yet welcoming new New York City flagship that honors his creations and takes the brand forward. “New York has always evoked a great sense of excitement for me, a city of endless possibilities,” says Blahnik. “So, it is an honor for me to open on Madison Avenue, an exquisite location, which I remember fondly from our formative years.” We spoke with Kristina Blahnik, the founder’s niece and the company’s CEO, to learn more about this homecoming.

What was special about this space?

“Manolo’s very first store in America in the late 1970s was on Madison Avenue, so when we found this particular building, it felt like a true coming home. At the time of visiting the space it was two separate stores, so to be able to turn this magnificent double-fronted building from the 1920s back to single use was a unique opportunity. To also have our showroom and offices above means that this really is the beating heart of Manolo Blahnik in America.”

Who did you work with to bring this vision to life?

“We worked with award-winning interior designer and friend of the brand David Thomas, whom we had previously worked with for our Paris boutique. David has a fantastic understanding of Manolo’s vision and cultural collages as well as the house values.”

What aesthetic were you going for with this project?

“Our boutiques all have a one-of-a-kind aesthetic that reference the location and Manolo’s whimsical style. The New York boutique also takes on this approach and embodies Hollywood Regency, a theme that evokes grandeur and opulence but still has a sense of warmth and intimacy.”

What are your favorite design elements?

“The striped double-height ceilings, which absolutely capture the Hollywood Regency feel. And, of course, there is the bar, as we wanted to create an area where visitors could socialize and congregate. Our first boutique in London’s Chelsea neighborhood became the hangout for Manolo and his friends, so we really wanted to inject a sense of this relaxing ambiance in New York.”

American designer and entrepreneur Tory Burch returns to New York City’s SoHo neighborhood with the opening of a three-story flagship at 151 Mercer Street. The new boutique will offer the complete Tory Burch clothing and accessories collections along with an expanded Home assortment and limited-edition, exclusive bags like the Lee Radziwill Double Bags. “I could not be more excited about our Mercer Street store,” says Burch, who is the brand’s executive chairman and chief creative officer. “It is an evolution of our retail aesthetic, and I have loved the creative process, combining a modern space with signature decorative elements and details that are personal to me. The downtown location feels like a homecoming, just a five-minute walk from where we opened our first boutique on Elizabeth Street.”

Created in partnership with Curiosity architect Gwenaël Nicolas, the modern store is a departure from Burch’s signature orange lacquered and gold design elements. But, of course, rattan, wicker and brass are used in unique ways in the interior spaces. Landscape architect Miranda Brooks has created an outdoor garden oasis behind the store and work by women artists and local artisans is featured throughout the space. A Francesca DiMattio sculptural chandelier, floral chintz sofa, bold ceiling patterns and copper resin-filled travertine tables round out the furniture in the space. “We believe in the strategic value of retail paired with our vibrant e-commerce channel,” says the brand’s CEO Pierre-Yves Roussel. “We want to continuously evolve our store experience and expand our omnichannel capabilities. We are excited for our customers to discover our storytelling and our beautiful products at Mercer Street. As a New York brand, we will be contributing to the local community through partnerships, events and donations–we are committed to playing our part in our city’s resurgence after an incredibly tough year.”

“For us, the shorter the distance from the oven to your mouth, the better the croissant. So we wanted to create a little croissant counter right here inside of our pastry kitchens in Flatiron, where we’re able to think about croissants and viennoiserie a bit differently—a classic croissant made with the best butter (Beurre d’Isigny) that we’ve imported from France, olive oil and multigrain croissants, beautiful fruit danishes, and old-school French classics done a bit more modernly.” Also on offer are the brand’s signature treat, the Brown Sugar DKA, savory breakfast sandwiches, quiches and other delectable pastries served alongside a variety of coffee drinks. Enjoy your treats on the lovely outdoor patio.

The 17-story building’s highly exclusive residential offerings include seven suites and four chic, individually decorated duplexes with unobstructed and unparalleled views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. Baretto, the private dining salon and bar, opens up to an impeccably manicured courtyard garden for the most relaxing experience.

Le Pavillon

Chef Daniel Boulud’s restaurant Le Pavillon has opened at the new One Vanderbilt office tower development adjacent to Grand Central Terminal. The 11,000-square-foot, 100-seat restaurant features a 30-seat bar designed by Isay Weinfeld and a flowering garden with trees in the dining room bringing the outside in. The SL Green Realty skyscraper in Midtown will feature two food and beverage offerings from Boulud; the ground floor will be home to an outpost of his Épicerie Boulud. It’s named after New York City institution Le Pavillon, which defined mid-century French dining in the United States when it opened in 1941. With lush greenery and foliage woven into the dining room, it will bring a peaceful oasis to bustling Midtown. The vegetable-forward and seafood-centric cuisine is approachable, fresh and forward-thinking, boasting seasonal bounty and flavor. “With its garden view and original design features, it is our goal to create a retreat-like atmosphere where guests can come, enjoy light, fresh and flavorful cuisine and be reenergized,” says Boulud. “With restaurants closed or significantly reduced for so long, many people are craving the experience of dining out safely, with creative cuisine, friendly service and all the thrills that just can’t be recreated at home. We all need that right now.”

Sona

Sona, an Indian restaurant owned by entrepreneur Maneesh Goyal, has just opened in Flatiron. Overseen by chef Hari Nayak and David Rabin, a partner in the Lambs Club and American Bar, Goyal has long dreamt of opening an Indian restaurant in the city. “This is really a family story for me,” says Goyal. “My father opened the first Indian restaurant in the state of Texas in 1975, so I essentially grew up in an Indian restaurant. In many ways, for me, Sona is a way for me to stay connected to the country that my parents left to start a new life in America.” The 20th Street location has been abuzz with guests since it opened (Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts and more), with standout dishes including butter chicken and a tribute dish to the late chef Floyd Cardoz, aptly named Floyd’s Goan Fish Curry. The Indo-Deco space was transformed by designer Melissa Bowers and features such design details as a gold bar tower dividing the space and a luxe purple marble bar. Goyal loves the use of arches in the space. “Archways embody the spirit of India,” he says. “They visually transport you in a very simple way.”

Sant Ambroeus Brookfield Place

Sant Ambroeus Brookfield Place is the hospitality group’s newest New York City outpost, welcoming visitors with a pair of custom-designed 18-foot-tall Murano glass chandeliers that perfectly accentuate the 40-foot-high ceilings. The restaurant beautifully marries elegant Italian ambiance with the spirit of downtown. The formal dining area offers an Italian menu curated by chef Iacopo Falai with classic Milanese pasta dishes such as tonnarelli cacio e pepe and fettuccine alla bolognese. The new space was designed by longtime Sant Ambroeus collaborator Robert McKinley of Studio Robert McKinley. “The goal is always to transport guests to the heart of Milan and complement the dining experience through design,” says McKinley. “I am always so inspired by the juxtaposition of opulence and modernity in the designs of North Italy.” The restaurant features mahogany paneling, floral-inspired wall-to-wall carpeting and papaya-colored moire fabric wall coverings.

Ject

Founded by board-certified physician assistant Gabrielle Garritano, Ject is a new medical aesthetics skin clinic with locations in New York City and the Hamptons. After working for years in plastic surgeons’ offices on the Upper East Side, Garritano saw endless streams of patients coming in for Botox and filler but the prices shocked her. She wanted to offer these services at a more reasonable price in a more laid-back, yet new and modern environment. “After working in Manhattan in plastic surgery for a decade, I began to see that these services were only available to the top echelon of society, creating a huge gap in the market,” Garritano explains. “On the other hand, I saw day in and day out that the people who were getting these procedures loved the results and were aging much more gracefully than the people who weren’t getting preventative Botox and filler treatments.” Neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport and Xeomin and fillers like Juvéderm, Restylane and Radiesse are on offer along with treatments like chemical peels, microneedling (using the SkinPen Precision Systems, the only FDA-cleared microneedling device on the market), IPL laser and luxurious facials.

The services menu is straightforward and simple, the decor is clean and elevated and the highly trained medical providers are welcoming and knowledgeable. “Getting an injectable is a very intimate experience, whether it is your first time getting Botox or fillers or something else,” she says. “It has been so important for me and my whole team to understand what every single client is experiencing when they walk through the door.” In addition to its West Village location, Ject has just opened a Upper East Side space to service these treatments to uptown clients.

R+Co Bleu

R+Co Bleu, the newly launched uptown sister brand to R+Co, was inspired by R+Co co-founder Garren’s career. The couture line comes in four collections color-coded by concern (blue, orange-red, green and purple for essentials, color, repair and moisture and volume, respectively), and each product’s formulation is color-safe, Leaping Bunny–certified, vegan and free of gluten, parabens and sulfates. The jars and bottles are recyclable and completely made of post-consumer recycled materials, and the tubes are made of recyclable sugarcane-derived plastic. The line features shampoos, conditioners, styling and finishing products like Cult Classic Flexible Hairspray, Retroactive Dry Shampoo and Primary Color Shampoo & Conditioner.

Vicki Morav

Renowned skincare expert and aesthetician Vicki Morav has recently opened a new multilevel spa off Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side. Using brands like Biologique Recherche, MBR, Forlle’d, Augustinus Bader and Valmont to bring clients’ skin to its peak potential, Morav tackles each skin concern with a personalized approach and offers clients a complete skincare regimen to suit them. “Most facialists don’t practice deep cleansing during facials anymore,” says Morav. “Everything starts with clean skin. Once that’s done, we specialize in microneedling, radiofrequency, acid peels, lymphatic drainage and microcurrent treatments.”

After 30 years in business, Morav decided to create a new, 3,200-square-foot flagship skin clinic as a spacious sanctuary for her clients. Morav worked with Matthew Kelly from MK Dream Design on the design. “I walked into the space and saw the second floor and immediately had a vision,” says Morav. “I saw a room that was bright and beautiful and imagined that it could become an education, lecture, meditation or even an event room. Right away, I was enchanted with the idea of expansion.”

Balmain

Five decades after Pierre Balmain opened the first Balmain boutique on Madison Avenue, the Parisian house has returned with a new flagship designed by French architectural agency Studio AMV. “I love New York and I’m fascinated by the city’s one-of-a-kind style and flair,” explains the brand’s creative director, Olivier Rousteing. For Balmain’s return to NYC, Rousteing created two exclusive, limited-edition BBuzz bags and a new home fragrance collaboration with French fragrance house Trudon.

The Last Line

Cult-favorite jewelry label The Last Line has opened its first permanent boutique in New York City’s West Village neighborhood. The 800-square-foot jewel box space exudes an understated city-chic elegance and showcases a kaleidoscope of jewelry in whimsical colors, shapes and sizes. “We want to be the last place you ever need to visit for fine jewelry, which is why you see so many options. We have every intention of living up to our name and give our customers the pieces of their dreams,” says the brand’s founder, Shelley Sanders. “I love that with just The Last Line, you could build your ultimate jewelry box.” From rainbow tennis bracelets to emerald ear climbers, diamond twist hoops and zodiac coin charms, all the jewelry embodies a uniquely sophisticated playful edge. The Bleecker Street store features an onsite ear piercer offering piercings in a safe, warm and inviting living room-style area. “The walls are the happiest bright yellow and the jewelry is displayed on colorful busts so you can see it right away and, of course, try it on,” says Sanders. “There are design elements that mirror key jewelry pieces—a rainbow chandelier that was inspired by our rainbow tennis bracelet and flower sconces that reflect the design of our Teddy flower earring.”

Mackage

Innovative cold-weather clothing brand Mackage has opened a flagship store in SoHo, its fifth retail location opening in 2021. The brand’s newest destination offers men’s, women’s, children’s and footwear collections throughout the 3,400-square-foot space. The landmark 1890 building boasts original architectural details along with several new standout design elements such as a dark, dramatic spiral staircase imported from Italy. Mackage incorporates the finest leather, down and wool materials into its high-quality outerwear, ensuring functionality is always a top priority. To celebrate the new store, Mackage teamed up with a number of local New York artists to present a rotation of artwork on the exterior of the store.

Loeffler Randall

Cult accessories label Loeffler Randall has opened its first store in SoHo housing its shoes, bags, jewelry, accessories and, now, ready-to-wear. The 600-square-foot boutique is designed by architect and interior designer Poonam Khanna, founder of UNIONWORKS, who worked alongside the brand’s founder Jessie Randall and her team. “We know our customers love coming to us directly for the most extensive offering of Loeffler Randall, so having a store is the tangible version of that,” says Randall. “We can service them better with an additional touch point. I see the store not only as a place for selling and discovery, but as a creative laboratory as well.” The New York–based brand was founded by Randall and her husband (now CEO) Brian Murphy 16 years ago. The serene jewel box of a boutique feels calm and warm and design features include curving walls, a built-in sofa under a curved archway and ripple-fold drapery panels that evoke the label’s iconic, handmade pleats. Plaster walls, natural wood, woven floor coverings and velvet fabrics in vibrant hues add a rich, warm look to the space. “The store design is focused on spatial simplicity and an edited palette that feels calm, warm and concise,” says Randall. “I’m very inspired by natural, raw materials.”

The welcoming spirit of the new Ace Hotel Brooklyn is influenced by the picturesque tree-lined streets and brownstones of Cobble Hill, the culture of Fort Greene and the beauty of the East River. The 287-room hotel offers a distinct Brooklyn-inspired narrative throughout the artistically designed interiors from longtime Ace design collaborators Roman and Williams. The Boerum Hill hotel’s brutalist facade is an homage to the grit of Brooklyn’s shipyards while the floor-to-ceiling windows in guestrooms reveal panoramic views of Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island and the Statue of Liberty.

“We’re lucky enough to have landed at the junction of so many rich and inspiring neighborhoods, and hope to provide a new and inviting sense of place for our guests and neighbors to call home,” says Ace Hotel Group president Brad Wilson. As the second ground-up build for Ace, this hotel feels especially one-of-a-kind with design elements such as custom tile murals, original artwork by local textile artists and unique furnishings throughout.

Things To Do in New York City https://dujour.com/cities/things-to-do-in-new-york-city/ Tue, 09 Feb 2021 16:00:58 +0000 The Editors of DuJour https://dujour.com/?p=118161 Here's what you should do in New York City from art and shopping to wellness and cuisine.

The post Things To Do in New York City appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Art & Culture:

This winter, Sperone Westwater gallery on the Lower East Side will mount a solo exhibition of recent work by artist Peter Sacks. Republic showcases paintings in which the layers of history, myth, ritualistic practices and literary references run deep and are deeply informed. The South Africa-born Sacks is an Oxford-educated Rhodes Scholar and Yale Ph.D. Since 1980,
he’s also been an English professor at Johns Hopkins and Harvard (where he still teaches).

Recently described in the pages of The New Yorker as “one of the most exciting painters in America” Sacks utilizes diverse, workaday materials like cotton, burlap, lace, wood and cardboard, some fleetingly imprinted with poetic texts typed on the cloth by the artist using a manual typewriter. Sacks also composes with fragments of Indian textiles, indigo blue cottons from South Africa, antique kimonos from Japan and embroidered linen from Normandy. The twisted, torn and joyful pieces of fabric evoke unfurled banners, flowing rivers, semaphore flags—and, in this new series, the skyline of American cities. The recycling of fabrics from the global textile trade suggests the labor involved in their making, while intimating a sense of impermanence and loss, migration and diaspora. Republic will run until March 13, 2021 and is one of the most unique things to do in New York City.

Shopping:

A celebration of scent, sight and sound, fragrance house D.S. & Durga is rooted in the power of cultural exploration, from music, art and nature to the aromas that accompany these landscapes. David and Kavi Moltz, the husband-and-wife duo behind the fragrance brand, recently opened a Brooklyn atelier in the heart of Williamsburg. The new outpost features a custom cast-in-place concrete island paired with a chandelier from Entler along with other eye-catching design elements. Technology plays a huge role in the store, with QR codes on display for each scent that will play a video describing it.

Food:

Frenchette, the 2019 James Beard award winner for Best New Restaurant located in Tribeca, recently opened a delectable new bakery on nearby Church Street. Offering unique takes on breads (purple barley and oats), pastries (twice-baked croissants with pistachio and hazelnut) and cookies (ginger molasses spelt), Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson’s bakery is sure to satisfy even the snobbiest carb lovers. Frenchette is taking precautions to keep customers safe and is currently available for take out and delivery via Caviar or you can visit the Crepe Truck at 45 Rockefeller Plaza.

Wellness:

The newest self-care destination in New York City has been strategically designed with COVID-19 restrictions as top priorities. The flagship Hydra Studios location on Wall Street opened on January 4, 2021 after construction halted in March due to the pandemic. The founders of this wellness studio, fitness oasis, and luxury outpost used this time to reimagine the space with new industry standards in mind to keep clients as safe as possible. “We immediately needed to rethink and redesign our studio and its operations, pivoting from creating a communal experience to a more private one,” says Hydra Studios co-founder Marie Kloor, who serves as the company’s CEO. At the Wall Street location you will find private suites reserved for individual fitness routines (featuring Peloton, MIRROR workout system, TRX, mats and light weights), locker rooms that include amenities and products from brand partners Brooklinen, Dyson, Verb, Blind Barber, Malin + Goetz, Way of Will, and Seed, as well as rainfall showers, steam rooms, and an infrared sauna to complete your experience. Schedule an individual session at Hydra Studios for a one-off work out or opt for a monthly membership.

Plastic Surgery Trends According to Two NYC Experts https://dujour.com/cities/shafer-clinic-dr-dendy-engelman-plastic-surgery-trends/ Mon, 01 Feb 2021 18:30:07 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=118112 The stunning new Shafer Clinic offers a one-stop shop for all your dermatological, cosmetic and plastic surgery needs

The post Plastic Surgery Trends According to Two NYC Experts appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer opened the Shafer Clinic in a four-story penthouse complex on top of 535 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in early 2020. Boasting a wraparound sky terrace with panoramic skyline views, the vast, modern space boasts treatment and operating rooms as far as the eye can see. “It was a much larger space than I had intended, but I decided to take the plunge,” says Dr. Shafer. “I purposely designed the office with oversized halls and rooms and open space, so social distancing is very easy to accomplish in our office. Some patients even opt to have treatments outdoors. Nothing beats having Botox injections on a penthouse terrace overlooking the city.” Shafer Clinic Fifth Avenue offers the full range of plastic surgery and dermatological offerings, and its Skin+Laser Lab offers an impressive collection of the latest laser
and other energy-based devices. Madonna’s favorite aesthetician, Edyta Jarosz, has joined the practice as well; book her signature LED/OxyLight Therapy facial.

Recently, Dr. Shafer brought on his friend and colleague, board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Dr. Dendy Engelman, into his practice to round out the Clinic’s offerings. “Dr. Engelman and I met several years ago teaching for Allergan,” says Dr. Shafer. “She brings enormous dermatology, dermatological surgery and laser experience to the practice.”

We talked to Dr. Shafer and Dr. Engelman about the face and body trends they are seeing this winter.

A treatment room at the new Shafer Clinic

A treatment room at the new Shafer Clinic

He Said:

What are the most requested plastic surgeries right now?

Face surgeries such as facelift, neck liposuction, buccal fat pad excisions and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) are in highest demand right now. Tomorrow, we have three facelifts scheduled in one day. People are spending much more time staring into the camera and seeing their appearance for hours on end during video chats. While the typical facelift patient is generally in their fifties or sixties, we are seeing younger people requesting the procedure.

Why is working from home making elective plastic surgery more palatable?

Patients seem to have less hesitation about downtime, since they have to wear a mask anyway and don’t have to take time off of work. They could have breast implants on Thursday and be on a Zoom call on Friday and no one would even know.

What are you seeing as the big trends for 2021?

We have seen a boost in noninvasive body treatments such as CoolSculpting to freeze fat, Emsculpt to build muscle and Lumenis NuEra Tight radiofrequency to tighten skin.

She Said:

What are the most requested treatments and procedures right now?

Things to combat stress breakouts and maskne. Many patients—even ones who were not struggling before—have come to me to help manage their breakouts. I’ve also seen a huge uptick in injectables like Botox, Kybella and filler for the eyes, neck and jawline.

What made you decide to partner with Dr. Shafer?

It’s really a holistic approach to aesthetics. Whether you need medical dermatology, skin cancer surgery, laser treatments, noninvasive or surgical body contouring or aesthetic surgery, you only have to visit one clinic. Dr. Shafer and I consult on patient cases throughout the day and share a lot of patients so we can best address their needs.

What are you seeing as the big trends for 2021?

The new-to-market Lumenis NuEra Tight machine which uses focal radiofrequency to thicken the skin, improve texture and improve skin strength. I’m really excited about it.

Winter in New York City can be brutal. But if there is one thing New Yorkers will brave the brisk air for is an adorable café that could easily be plucked right from a fairytale. Angelina Paris has been a mainstay in Paris since 1903 when it was founded by confectioner Anton Rumpelmayer and his son, René. The tea house welcomed creatives from all over the city, among them Coco Chanel. Locals and tourists would flock to Angelina Paris for its signature Mont-Blanc pastry (French meringue topped with a dome of whipped cream that is covered in chestnut vermicelli) and the renowned hot chocolate “L’Africain.”

Discover The Newest Launch From HoliFrog https://dujour.com/cities/holifrog-skincare-emily-parr-interview/ Fri, 30 Oct 2020 15:00:13 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=116534 Longtime beauty and wellness publicist Emily Parr celebrates the evolution of her own brand HoliFrog

The post Discover The Newest Launch From HoliFrog appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
“I’m a total skincare snob and I’m not afraid to admit it,” says beauty and wellness publicist Emily Parr, who has launched brands like Juice Generation, Drunk Elephant, Briogeo and Anna Kaiser. Knowing the industry inside and out, she noticed that no brands were making cleansers the star of the show and she couldn’t find one she loved. She was impressed by the evolution of the serum, cream and mask categories, but felt cleansers were overlooked. “We all have cravings, and so does our skin,” says Parr. “Skin is a living organ. It gets cranky, it gets thirsty, it has different needs at different times. You must listen to your skin, because one-and-done simply doesn’t cut it when it comes to face wash.” Plus, she discovered that the majority of cleansers on the market are water and surfactants (cleansing agents) with a few key ingredients sprinkled in for marketing value. Cutting back on fillers like water leaves much more room for vitamins, antioxidants, skin-identical and cell-communicating ingredients.

So last year, Parr and her partner Majeed Hemmat launched skincare brand HoliFrog with four hero cleansers: Tashmoo Water Lily Nourishing Milky Wash, Shasta AHA Refining Acid Wash, Kissimmee Vitamin F Therapy Balmy Wash and Superior Omega Nutritive Gel Wash. “This idea of ‘situational cleansing’ has become the cornerstone of our brand,” Parr explains. “Skin has different needs at different times.”

Galilee Antioxidant Dewy Drop

The brand became a fast bestseller at Dermstore, SpaceNK and FaceGym and will launch this fall on HSN. After the brand’s debut, Parr wanted to expand its range beyond cleansers, but wasn’t sure which category to tackle next. “Based on customer feedback, it became quite clear that our customers wanted a skincare system to use post-wash,” she explains. So the brand is evolving from its motto of “situational cleansing” to skincare “for every skin situation.” Their first non-cleanser, launching this fall, is a hydration hybrid that drenches and repairs the skin—without any excess filler ingredients. Galilee Antioxidant Dewy Drop is a restoring serum that moonlights as a lotion emulsion. This serum-meets-lotion boasts antioxidants, vitamins, gentle exfoliants, non-fragrant plant oils and extracts and can be used on its own or in conjunction with your existing routine. “Nothing we do will ever be watered down…pun intended,” Parr says.

He tapped marketing whiz Will Makris to lead the restaurant’s promotional efforts. “I really respect Will,” says Levy. “Good partnerships come from yin and yang. There are certain things I know better and there are certain things Will knows better.”

Lola Taverna’s airy, rustic ambiance quickly attracted diners, who flock to its covered outdoor dining area. Six months after opening, Levy and Makris were staring down the barrel of a pandemic. “I have to give Cobi a lot of credit for being
the one who spearheaded the adjustment as fast as possible,” Makris says. “Cobi paid attention to what was going on in the world and [knew] we had to make people want to come to Lola for the food but also have outdoor seating where they felt comfortable and protected.” Levy always felt Lola’s prime corner location on Sixth Avenue was special, and its lush outdoor patio invites customers to dine safely. “Cobi really pushed for us to be the rock in the community. At some point, when things get better, we want to be a focal point,” says Makris.

The duo are already exploring ways to grow Lola Taverna. “I’m getting calls from all over the country with interest,” says Makris. “We are planning on expanding the brand, hopefully to Los Angeles and Las Vegas. We’re firing on all cylinders.”

A Dance Revolution in Brooklyn https://dujour.com/cities/katie-pryce-interview-dancebody-williamsburg-new-york/ Wed, 22 Apr 2020 17:00:57 +0000 Natasha Wolff https://dujour.com/?p=112574 DanceBody founder Katia Pryce debuts her first Brooklyn fitness studio

Katia Pryce came to New York to pursue a career in the performing arts but found herself with a different career path that was more rewarding, physically and professionally. The trainer, who counts Molly Sims as a devotee, has branded workout studios in Tribeca and NoMad but has just opened her first Brooklyn outpost in Williamsburg. “I created the DanceBody workout to selfishly fulfill what I was looking for—a strong and athletic body while maintaining those long, lean dancer lines,” says Pryce. What sets Dance- Body apart from other studios is that all the instructors have been or are still professional dancers, not just trainers. “Dancers bring this unique performance quality to every single class delivering each move with tough love and unparalleled musical timing,” Pryce explains. We talked to the dancer about about her clients, workout ensembles and the songs she can’t live without.

Who’s your favorite type of client to instruct?

The clients I love working with are those self declared ‘non-dancers.’ Stepping out of your comfort zone can be intimidating, but the reward is so worth it.

What do you wear when you’re teaching?

Noli Yoga is my go-to workout brand. Their pieces offer comfort, sweat-wicking, and fun prints, what more could you want? The days of all-black workout ensembles are out. Bring on the neons and animal prints! I also love Carbon38’s new line, which has become a go-to for me this year. I love the silhouette it creates.

What three songs are always on your playlist?

Right now, it’s: “Pure Water” by Mustard and Migos, “Look” by Leikeli47, and “Jolean” by Get Real, Claude VonStroke and Green Velvet.

Where would you like to teach next?

In just the last year, we’ve taught classes in Aspen, the Hamptons, Palm Beach, Greenwich and Los Angeles. I would love to teach anywhere in Asia, I know we would have such a following there as dance is such a tremendous part of their culture.

Go Inside The Annual Orchid Dinner https://dujour.com/cities/go-inside-the-annual-new-york-botanical-garden-orchid-dinner/ Mon, 24 Feb 2020 16:00:50 +0000 Jessie Ajluni https://dujour.com/?p=110881 The New York Botanical Garden celebrated its newest exhibit, The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham’s Kaleidoscope, with a magical night to remember

What do you get when you mix two of the loveliest institutions in New York City? A fantastical night sure to bring out some of the most glamorous of high society–and that is exactly what happened this Thursday evening at the Plaza Hotel to celebrate the opening of the New York Botanical Garden’s 18th annual Orchid Show.

Over 350 guests attended the floral extravaganza starting the night off with a cocktail hour where party-goers were invited to circle through the grand ballroom viewing individually designed tablescapes created by some of the city’s most sought after designers, florists, and architects. Some highlights included a stunning pagoda completely covered in white orchids and a towering tropical creation imagined by designer Elizabeth Sutton and Birch Event Design. Another star centerpiece was created by the man of the hour himself, Jeff Leatham, who also guest-designed this year’s exhibit. Featuring an artful arrangement of violet-hued orchids mixed with black calla lilies, which he poignantly revealed was his father’s favorite flower, gave just a taste of what viewers can expect of the stunning show itself.

Amongst the flowing cocktails and canapes, guests were able to scoop up some of their own botanical beauties during a silent auction that featured some of the rare orchids found within the exhibit. Sitting down to a lovely multi-course meal provided by The Plaza, followed by an eclectic array of tunes by DJ Mad Marj that had everyone hitting the dance floor, the night was a resounding success for the NYBG which was able to raise over $550,000 to benefit its research programs.

If you are regretting missing out on the event or are just an avid floral enthusiast fear not you can catch the show itself which will be running at the garden from February 15th through April 19th. Inspired by color, the exhibition is a dramatic display of multi-hued botanicals, light fixtures, and graphic installations. On the design, Leatham says “People have seen the interiors of the Conservatory already, but with this exhibition, I want them to look through them like never before.”

Several events are also centered around the exhibit including an over 21 night where guests can experience a night of music, drinks, light bites, and a performance by Princess Lockeroo, one of today’s leading voguing choreographers. As well as a lecture by Jeff Leatham himself on the creation of the exhibit.
