Hoorsenbuhs

Los Angeles–based fine jewelry and lifestyle brand Hoorsenbuhs is the newest addition to retailer Elyse Walker’s Newport Beach space. The seaside shop-in-shop sells weighty rose gold cuffs and platinum pavé chains, all featuring the brand’s signature tri-link motif woven into the design. To honor that symbol, the space showcases an oversize open-link chain pendant hanging from the ceiling. “I was obsessed with Hoorsenbuhs long before we carried the collection in our stores,” says Elyse Walker. “It has such a strong brand identity and distinct point of view.”

Audemars Piguet

Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet has found a new home at Costa Mesa’s South Coast Plaza. The 1,200-square-foot store offers a wide selection of men’s and women’s timepieces, including the newest Royal Oak Offshore models and women’s novelties like the Royal Oak Frosted Gold Selfwinding in 34mm, available for the first time with a light blue tapisserie dial. Born in the Jura Mountains, Audemars Piguet brought a taste of home to its Southern California outpost with a warm design featuring photographs of alpine trees, curated sculptures and a serene, contemporary aesthetic.

Canada Goose

High-performing luxury outerwear brand Canada Goose is opening a new boutique in South Coast Plaza that will house the brand’s first-ever Snow Room in the United States. The Snow Room uses innovative technology to simulate a freezing cold snowstorm with temperatures as low as -10 degrees so customers can put the brand’s functionality to the test. Although located in sunny Orange County, this store’s Snow Room was inspired by the climate of Churchill, Manitoba, otherwise known as the polar bear capital of the world. Along with the ultimate warm outerwear, Canada Goose offers lightweight down jackets, rain jackets, hoodies and more pieces fit for the West Coast lifestyle. “In opening our doors in California, we’ve designed a space to discover and experience the breadth and versatility of our Canada Goose collection, with pieces for every adventure, no matter the season. This store is our quintessential invitation to live in the open,” says the brand’s North American president, Carrie Baker.

Cleobella’s Orange County Roots and Global Reach https://dujour.com/cities/cleobella-angela-obrien-interview/ Tue, 10 May 2022 18:00:46 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=124169 Designer Angela O’Brien of Cleobella offers stylish sustainability in Seal Beach

The post Cleobella’s Orange County Roots and Global Reach appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Growing up in Huntington Beach, Cleobella founder Angela O’Brien lived on the beach, which is why she and her husband chose Seal Beach as their home base when it came time to raise their own family. “Seal Beach is a charming town with a wonderful community spirit, which makes it an idyllic place to raise our children,” she says. “So much of our lifestyle is rooted in the ocean, and we love that we are walking distance from the beach.”

Before putting down roots in Seal Beach, O’Brien was inspired by her world travels to launch the eco-friendly, community-driven fashion and accessories brand Cleobella. The brand launched in 2006 with its signature Mexicana clutch after O’Brien and her husband left their jobs to travel across Asia, Africa and Australia. Since then, Cleobella has become known for woodblock-printed dresses, including the best-selling Magdalena, eyelet dresses like the Emmy and the newest, the Farlow. “With every new design, we start with global inspiration and our Cleobella woman as our muse,” says O’Brien. “My love for one-of-a-kind sustainable textiles was born and has grown into the foundation of what Cleobella is today. We now use 100 percent organic or natural fibers for all of our collections and are implementing zero-waste projects into our curations.”

Cleobella founder Angela O’Brien

While creating stylish designs that speak to Cleobella’s customers is a priority, O’Brien has a big-picture strategy that focuses on building a community, fostering relationships with local artisans around the globe and working to create a better world for her family. “Our strategy is to never compromise and to create timeless designs,” she says. With sustainable textiles, recyclable packaging, long-lasting relationships with artisans in India and Bali and a promise to donate 1 percent of proceeds to organizations supporting the environment, women’s empowerment, child education and artisan freedom, this ethical brand is giving back to families all over the world far beyond fashion and accessories. “I felt like there was a huge missing piece to the puzzle in connecting the artisan industry to the consumer,” says the entrepreneur. Next, Cleobella will launch an exclusive collaboration with Molly Sims and has plans for jewelry, accessories and home collections.

Saturdays NYC

Fashion and lifestyle brand Saturdays NYC recently opened the doors of a new 1,200-square-foot boutique at the famed Lido Marina Village in Newport Beach. The new store serves as a homecoming for Saturdays co-founder Morgan Collett, who has always found inspiration for his brand in his hometown of Newport Beach. “As a kid growing up in Newport surrounded by the surf industry, it gave me the opportunity, inspiration and foundation that set me on my path to New York, which inevitably led to Colin Tunstall and I creating Saturdays,” Collett says. The space’s interior reflects the DNA of Saturdays with raw, natural elements such as JUDD plywood application and smooth concrete flooring. The minimalist, laid-back design allows the full range of seasonal and core products to shine among subtle surf-inspired art and decor.

We Found The Best Way to Wine https://dujour.com/cities/argaux-wine-brand-makes-wine-approachable/ Wed, 13 Oct 2021 15:00:10 +0000 Kasey Caminiti https://dujour.com/?p=121829 Costa Mesa-based wine shop Argaux, is a female-owned online wine shop and educational platform

The post We Found The Best Way to Wine appeared first on DuJour.

Orange County–based sommeliers Arden Montgomery and Margaux Reaume came together to launch Argaux to engage, educate and entertain wine customers. “It’s our mission to remove any intimidation surrounding wine and to make the world of wine approachable,” says Montgomery. “We want them to have access to our sommeliers, stories, tips on food and wine pairings and the inside scoop on where to taste wine while traveling.”

After meeting at college in Arizona and bonding over their shared love of cooking, entertaining and hosting dinners, the duo decided to launch Argaux in Costa Mesa, California. “There is an evolving food scene and beautiful farmers markets with the freshest produce here,” says Montgomery. “Our community is active and healthy and they are starting to ask questions about their wine like, ‘Why do I get headaches when I drink red wine?’ and ‘What is natural wine and is it better for me?’”

From carefully curated virtual tastings to the newly launched at-home Blind Tasting Kit, there is a thoughtful blend of learning and sipping with every activation. “Argaux is providing Orange County and beyond with the best small-production, family-owned and responsibly farmed wines in the world,” says Montgomery. “We felt like Orange County needed more diversity when it comes to where and how they access these types of wines.” Working with other women winemakers, sommeliers and entrepreneurs has also been rewarding for the pair. “It’s inspiring to be a part of the industry at this time,” Montgomery explains. “There has always been an incredible community of women in this industry and we’re honored to be included and working alongside them.” While Argaux continues to evolve with new seasonal launches and celebratory packs of wine, the company remains rooted in its original focus on consumer experience, human connection and good wine.

The Road to Recovery Just Got a Little Easier https://dujour.com/cities/hyperice-recovery-tools-founder-interview/ Wed, 04 Aug 2021 15:30:36 +0000 Editors of DuJour https://dujour.com/?p=120736 Hyperice founder Anthony Katz has taken his company from the locker room to the board room

The post The Road to Recovery Just Got a Little Easier appeared first on DuJour.

]]>
Ten years ago, entrepreneur Anthony Katz sought to democratize recovery technology and empower athletes to care for their bodies. “At that time, athletes were not really implementing technology into their recovery—they were mostly doing things like ice baths, manual massages and icing their joints,” says Katz. “The technology that was being used back then was more for injury rehab and came in the form of medical devices that cost thousands of dollars and were mostly administered by training or medical staff, not the athlete themselves.” So, Katz founded Hyperice, a recovery and movement enhancement technology company specializing in vibration, percussion and thermal technology. Their first product was called the Hyperice, named after Kobe Bryant’s Nike Hyperdunk sneaker. Now, the Irvine-based brand’s technology is used by everyone from the world’s most elite professional athletes (think LeBron James, Naomi Osaka and Kelly Slater) to rehabilitation and fitness facilities around the world. “For the brand to work, we needed to create a suite of products that would be innovative, user-friendly, portable and accessible to as many people as possible,” says Katz.

“It was clear that if the products were pro athlete-approved, anyone could benefit.” The company chose Southern California for its headquarters because the community is so active and health conscious. The brand is in global expansion mode, and its partnerships with the NBA and the Los Angeles Lakers have broadened the brand’s reach in Asia and Europe. In March 2020, Hyperice acquired Normatec, innovators of cutting-edge dynamic compression systems, and in December 2020 acquired RecoverX, pioneers of intelligent thermal technologies, to deliver world-class performance and wellness solutions. “Over the past few years, we’ve worked to move the technology from the locker room onto the field and now into the consumer’s homes,” says the brand’s CEO, Jim Huether.

Kahn first became known in 2004 for her jewelry brand Made Her Think, and now her eponymous brand features heirloom pieces of fine jewelry. “My brand has gone through so many iterations over the past 16 years, but so has my life, in many ways,” says Kahn. A born-and-bred New Yorker, Kahn moved her business to Newport Beach after feeling a strong magnetic pull toward California. “Being from New York, I knew there were other areas on the map I needed to connect with and explore,” says Kahn. “Southern California was calling.”

Her new collection features solid brass pieces with gold-filled chains and semiprecious stones that clients can use to tell their own stories. “As a passionate collector, I rarely part with things,” she says. “They just become the layers of the things I am building. People have been responding so positively, returning and adding on more charms or introducing another chain to layer in. I love watching how each of them grow.”

Sasha Plavsic created Ilia Beauty after spending much of her life embracing a clean lifestyle. Her brother became sick with asthma at a young age, which inspired her family to pivot to a healthier way of life. Plavsic recalls growing up in Vancouver with a level of consciousness around a clean lifestyle before clean was a thing. “My family visited naturopaths and were part of an organic food co-op long before organic grocery stores were trending,” she says.

With encouragement from her mother, Plavsic set out to recreate her favorite tinted lip balm using nontoxic ingredients. “In 2011, Ilia launched with a version of that product, known as our Tinted Lip Conditioner,” she says. “[It’s] a hybrid balm-meets-lipstick with buildable, wearable shades that really nourish the lips.”

Since then, the brand’s identity has not wavered, and the hits just keep on coming. Bestsellers include its Limitless Lash Mascara, Multi-Stick and True Skin Serum Concealer, and Rachel Brosnahan and Olivia Wilde are fans.

The brand is based in Laguna Beach, where the Serbian Plavsic lives with her husband and two daughters. Living under constant sun, Plavsic’s daily skincare routine always starts with the brand’s skincare, makeup and Super Serum Skin Tint SPF40, which is silicone-free and uses natural emulsifiers. She follows with True Skin Serum Concealer, a touch of Color Haze Multi-Use Pigment on her cheeks, and a swipe of the brand’s newest launch: Balmy Gloss Tinted Lip Oil, which is packed with hydrating actives like hyaluronic acid and Salicornia (a sea succulent). “Now more than ever, people want to look and feel good—with less makeup,” says Plavsic.

Designing Luxury From The Ground Up https://dujour.com/cities/architect-chris-brandon-orange-county-interview/ Mon, 13 Jul 2020 15:30:25 +0000 Jessica Ritz https://dujour.com/?p=114568 Architect Chris Brandon’s work creates a sense of place while pushing design forward in Orange County and beyond

The O.C. is a hub for great design that really encompasses livability and a luxurious yet laid-back feel,” architect Chris Brandon says about the region where he lives and works. The Oregon native graduated from the architecture program at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and honed his design skills working for multiple architecture firms before establishing his own practice in 2009. He and his team soon became sought-after for their understanding of Southern California living and how they translate coastal lifestyles to sophisticated residential and commercial projects.

Whether it’s a hillside home with sweeping views of the Pacific featuring an open floor plan and cutting-edge materials, a shingle-clad beachfront home or a modern retreat in the Rocky Mountains, Brandon taps into the spirit of each place. “The region definitely plays a role in our projects, as most of our clients are located near the beach,” he explains about his Orange County clients. Maximizing indoor-outdoor flow is key, as is using materials that are both aesthetically pleasing and up to the challenges posed by coastal conditions.

In recent years, demand has grown for Brandon’s services across the country, and he is currently working on projects in L.A., Santa Barbara, Colorado and on the East Coast. Locally, Brandon Architects’ dramatic, futuristic scheme for the luxury Strand Hotel in Dana Point remains highly anticipated. Meanwhile, Brandon continually hones his contemporary sensibility by listening closely to his clients and following technological advances in the field that enhance both practical considerations and the creative process. “Our capability to share our projects with our clients through our VR resources has really changed their level of engagement and the way in which we do business,” he says. “It’s been a huge change from simply looking at drawings. This has played an integral part in getting clients excited about their new homes.”

One bite of a decadent Lady M Confections cake and it’s easy to see why the international dessert brand has garnered a cult-like following. Made up of 20 paper-thin homemade crepes with pastry creme between each layer, the company’s signature crepe cakes come in a variety of flavors, including green tea, coconut and chocolate banana.

Ken Romaniszyn, who grew up in Orange County, is the mastermind behind the brand, which has grown from one cake boutique in New York to 47 stores around the world, including one in Irvine. Below, the cake connoisseur talks about growing up in Orange County and how they come up with these delectable confections.

What are some fond memories of growing up in the OC?

Playing football at El Toro High School under the lights against Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano. Those were my glory years when I used to be able to run before I started eating too much cake. In high school, I looked like an athlete. Now I look like a baker.

How do you decide what flavors to add each year?

There is no limit to what we can make. You can take any flavor and incorporate it into crepes and make it sweet or savory. We bring in the international chef teams once a year and make like 50 or 60 different cakes. From there, we’ll pick about six to introduce for the following year. That’s the best week of the year.

Do you have a favorite cake?

It’s always strawberry shortcake. I grew up spending my summers in Japan. As soon as school was out, I’d get on a plane and go visit my grandma in Tokyo and one of the things that I always looked forward to is the strawberry shortcake. It’s so different and unique from anything you usually experience in the States. It always reminds me of my childhood.
